  1. It's nice to see someone new to the series, and be excited with it, like I was 8 years ago with OFP. I'm afraid you'll be addictive forever voodoochile123. In case you didn't notice, as you have played Midwinter, maybe you remember a game called Carrier Command. BIS is planning to remake it. http://www.carriercommand.com/

And, I almost forgot, welcome to the scene. :)

I loved Carrier Command! Thanks for the news that BIS is remaking it and the link!!

  2. The engine is the same for the retail version. Pop-in of distant objects and the problem with distance grass not masking players are both issues a lot of people would like to see addressed.

  3. Put your terrain to LOW and lower your VIEWDISTANCE. Those two items will help your framerate. Don't think about anti-aliasing and set your fill rate to no more than 100%.

Your GPU is at the bottom limits of what I find tolerable in Arma1/2. Jumping up to a nvidia 260 or ati 4870 will give you a huge boost in frames.

Your CPU is a little slow - overclock it as much as you can get away with. ArmA2 eats CPU cycles like breakfast.

  4. Also I'm wondering why the lighting from this street light looks so bad... reminds me of Quake 2 lights back in 1998 :P

YES! The light UMBRELLAS look very crude, and harken back to Quake 2 circa 1998. I wonder why these umbrellas can't at the very least become blurry. There must be some cheap trick to diminish the horrible outline without too much performance hit. At least I hope there is.

  5. I think that is post-processing, there is some color filter applied to the screen. You are seeing the raw output when you save. It would be nice to have this super-saturation at some point during the day/night cycle. Perhaps it shows up in-game at some point. I've only been playing for three days straight, so I know I haven't seen much of ArmA2.

  6. who is this company, and how the hell did they get a game like this? kinda worries me that i won't be able to find it in stores at all locally. steam it is i guess.

I know! What game looks like it doesn't belong? ARMA2! That's like seeing the KING hanging out with urine-soaked, dirtbag BUMS. WTF? The website looks like it was designed by some 80-year old grandmother with arthritis.

  7. Steam does not effect downloading patches for Arma1 or ARMA2. Only games connected to Valve require Steam to on or active for playing/patching.

BIS uses Steam as a tool to buy/download the game through. You don't even have to run Steam while playing, patching, ect... for BIS games.

Very good! Thanks, guys. I will get it from 505 since I don't like Steam and BIS stated that 505 would be more profitable for them.

  8. I really don't think it matters what publisher you buy from. Eventually all versions will be patched to be the same.

Although, don't steam versions of games use different patches, which arrive later than conventional DVD patches? At least that has been the case with a few games on Steam. Does this apply to other downloaded versions as well?

I would rather have a DVD if this is the case, but if there is a downloadable version that can use the regular patches, I'm all over it! Does anyone know?

  9. The problem now is: Everytime i get too close, i´ll get killed instantly. When i drive i get killed by RPG, when i walk i get killed by...must be snipers all over the place oO

Boomerang was missing for me too, so I crawled close to the camp out of the view of MG nests and laid down a smoke grenade. I was then able to approach the remaining troops and take them out myself.

I got called back to the camp and then nothing happens. Probably because I need to find the weapons smuggler and find evidence 2/2.

Manhattan is a really fun mission.

  10. According to Mr. Lenton, "The latest in-game visual pass has added another layer of ambient detail that takes us to the level of our original target visuals."

I think that we are a few years away from those target renders in terms of pure GPU speed. Maybe codemasters includes a futuristic GPU with every OFP2 purchase?

OR is he just referring to exploding barrels?

  11. I like the moaning and groaning and the fact that you can't sprint forever. It adds ambiance and immersion to the game.

I hope that Wolfrug will update his spectacular voice addon for ArmA2! The radio chatter is great, but adding shouted commands that are heard in the environment would be spectacular!

  12. ONE DAY we will see those target renders in playable form @60fps. Until then, I feel bad for anybody who gets suckered into believing those are anything but artistic guidelines and don't reflect actual gameplay.

We will need at least 10x the power of today's top GPU units to produce that kind of scene complexity.

REMEMBER that crappy online service 'cloud computing' that someone was trying to promote a month ago? I wonder if you put ArmA2 on there if you could get 60fps with viewdistances of 10,000 or 20,000? THAT would be worth it!

  13. There is a significance in where these effects are used.

In multiplayer, the motion blur is part of the game and represents your simulated cost for your activity on the battlefield. To remove it is akin to using an assist such as an auto-braking feature in a driving game.

I think it should be flagged in multiplayer and set server-side. For single player, however, it should be optional.
