Just a quick suggestion, cause its a pain evertime I come across it.
I use mouse invert, cause I am a flight sim type... (just used to it, even for infantry).
However, when you enter the command mode (, on numpad) you switch to a top down view looking on your squad from above.
It immediatelly becomes another interface "feel" as you are more using the mouse as a point and click tool and not a body control.
Therefore mouse invert (if enabled by the player) should be overridden with "no mouse invert" while in that command mode.

I ve got a prob.... I played arma fine half a year ago. Now, with 1.05 (and probably newer grafx drivers) the game crashed with a windows error message after playing 2-3 hours. I can immediatelly restart the game and play on, again for about 3 hours... Some kind of counter of doom it seem lol.
Anyway, the windows error message says the following thing:
Problemsignature:

Does FADE actually exist?? I thought it was just a PR thing to scare pirates...

For zooming use the 'Zoom in / Zoom in (Toggle)' Feature. :)As I mentioned, it doesnt snap back to default with that key. For example, when using the gun of a tank or a sniper rifle.

Hey,
anyone knows how AI and grass interact? When I approach them,
I can barely see them due to all that high grass in my view,
but they shoot me with pinpoint accuracy. It seems like they dont care much for that matter...

Thats not a solution. That key is needed to zoom up close to your target. Especially when playing infantry, but also on vehicles (so scan the horizon / zoom in on target).
I already tried to use the other "zoom" binding in the controls, and put the "assign/zoom" function on another key. The problem with the other single zoom function is, that it doesnt snap back as soon as you release the button. The combined "assign/zoom" function however gets your zoom back to normal as soon as you release.
The real solution would be to break those 2 functions apart. Having 2 different functions in one key binding is weird anyway.

I always wondered why they actually made things WORSE in many aspects of the game (from OFP to ArmA1/2), this being one of them.

Hey,
I was wondering how you guys do effecient target assigning.
Last night I was using an Apache and didnt really get it smoothly done.
I know you can use TAB to switch through radar targets, and then just click the left mouse button and your AI gunner sends one if those fire'n'forget up their arses. Thats pretty simple. Though there are things that annoy me and I wonder how you get along:
1. When I use the right mouse button, to zoom in, and to observe the terrain, my target becomes unlocked.
2. While piloting the apache, how do I assign a target to my gunner that is not a radar target? Like a structure or infantry.
3. How do I tell my gunner to fire hydras? When I select hydras, I have to switch to manual fire and use them by myself. Though as soon as I need to switch to the MG or Hellfires, I have to turn it off again. Thats a pain to fiddle around with everytime you want to switch between MG and hydra, especially when in the middle of the action.
I m interested to hear how you do it.

Hi,
I see the game uses the same NV goggles method for all situations, independent of vehicle you are using.
I would suggest removing the standard 2d overlay when using NV in an attack chopper and maybe leaving it out or adding a special "vehicle" overlay.
I dont know if it is also related to 16:9 format but I played AH-64 simulation games and using the TADS/PNVS (the target and NV systems) it never took away half of my viewsight like it does in ArmA2.
Maybe we can even get a real HUD (with NV),
that shows the information we atm only see on the bottom left MFD.
Things like altitude, angel, vertical velocity, speed etc.
cheers

Well, somehow you still need to be able to assign targets to your gunner. Also, the same binding is used for infantry spotting iirc, and so its needed when you fight with AI.
I think the binding is called something like "Zoom/report target". So it comes with 2 functions by default. Thats a bad thing.

Hello,
I d like to suggest, that the right mouse button feature in vehicles should be removed or redesigned.
I find it utterly unpractical that I assign my gunner a "house" or a "man" (that happens to be a friendly) just because I actually wanted to zoom in on something.
Since there is no target reticule in many modes, yet that "target assign" feature does still work, you have no idea where you are actually point at when zooming in.
This feature is really not well thought out and drives me crazy.
Thanx for reading.

Hey,
I wonder if Im the only one that is annoyed about the usefullness of that "HUD" in the chopper to shoot unguided hydras.
Everytime I try to use it it blocks my view. The target reticule is so ugly and "pixely" that it is more in the way than actually helping to aim.
Then there is the "transparent" glas that is not really so transparent and blocks my view instead of letting me see the enemy ground forces.
How do you aim with hydras?
I am so close to actually putting a little dot on my monitor screen and just remove the hud.

If we think about the fact that this was a problem in the first ArmA and not only did they not fix it then, but they included it in this game also without an off switch... then we're only left with one of two conclusions: they either dont give a [censored], or they really have no ideea what problems ppl have with this game and all the "give us your input/feedback/ideeas for making the game" was a bunch of BS... from BIS. :confused:Or its enormous effort to fiddle with that stuff in the code and no one wants to touch it :P

What about multiplayer when modding? Does it work?

The opening post speaks the truth

I got it all turned down...
What is killing my eyes is the overdone HDR: Its really a bit much. I cant remember being outside in the forrest and as soon as I looked into the direction of the sun I went blind. Or looking back into the mud making me see everthing dark.
Its a bit realistic if you were in a dark room for a while and come out to the sun... or vice versa, when you were alot outside in the sun and enter a dark room its hard to spot stuff.
But with this HDR ist just bulls*&$t

Hey,
I am really getting headaches from that lighing up and darkening again when you move your view around.
Is there anyway to disable it?
Thanx

Have you tried using the "walk" key?Without having the normal FPS slidey movement (i.e. tap-tap-tap and you move a pixel at a time), you are talking about having a system where you can independently control the movement of your limbs to the millimetre.
That's not going to happen, and if you thought about it, your really wouldn't want that level of control. Using the walk button is as close as you're ever going to get I'm afraid.
First of all: The walk key doesnt make a difference when using scope
In BIS games (and Arma2) the whole sight is shaking when making small movements to correct your position. It is not possible to move as if the gun is pressed against your shoulder and you look down the barrel while slowly coming around that tree/corner/window...
And please: No one talks about pixels or millimetre. Im talking about choppy animations with unsteady scope with each "tap" on the 'a' or 'd' key. The scrope shakes, period. How professional is that when you know that an enemy in that bush over there is aiming at the tree you are currently hiding behind?
Must I record it with fraps ann put it on youtube before the fanboys understand?
I like OFP, I like ArmA and I like ArmA2 (even with all those bugs and even with the fact that BIS should be ashamed for abusing the german market as beta testers). This is merely constructive criticism.
An easy way to improve this would be an even slower movement mode, holding down CTRL for example. Where the soldier puts all effort into staying on target with his sights (just like you would do when rearranging your position slightly while standing behind a tree or window).
I edited the opening post to make my point more clear.

Guys, while I respect everyone's opinion... please read more carefully!!
75% the posts here are missing the point.
My initial post was not about speed issues in movement, not about removing the "special feeling" etc.
Some of you read "standard shooter" and immediatelly go "zomfg, shooter kiddy go away"... in fact, that attitude is more showing who is the kiddy.
What the first post was about is "smoothness". I have to admit, "sluggish" was the wrong word.
We (as humand beings) can move small inches and smoothly/steadily aim while moving around a corner. We re no roboters. We are not artificially restricted.
In BIS games however, you are forced to tip the 'a' and 'd' keys while experiencing a weird bobbing and stumpy and clumsy feeling.
Slowly moving around the edge of a house is not feeling realistic. Slowly moving around a tree is not smooth.
In objection to what some people say, it is NOT realistic. Movement from the human perspective is fluid, its not a step by step experience.
Same goes for movement in buildings. When standing at a window and trying to find a good angle, its a usability nightmare.
Be it OFP, Arma or Arma2 (which I just bought)... you feel like a disabled person in so many situations.
To those that impute to me that I am a COD action player, be assured that I dont own 1 game of the series. In fact, it seems people nowadays just come on the boards to defame others without reading the whole posts. As I said, I come from similation games like the Jane's series and have spend countless days on military strategy games in my life.

Edit:
The title should better have been: "Why is movement in BIS games so choppy while aiming down your scope when making small adjustments to your view by tapping 'a' and 'd'.
Hi
my suggestion to make Arma2 more appealling for a wider range of players and less clumsy to play in general:
Get rid of animation bound movement.
If feels weird and hurts the gameplay experience in many situations where you need exact control over your camera and target reticule.
A human naturally controls his body and is not bound to "bopping" or "choppy" movement like we are presented in all BIS games. Since OFP I am wondering why you went with this movement model.
It is really just
-not fluent
-annoying when you adjust your position just slightly
-frustrating in buildings and around obstacles like tress where you tap 'a' and 'd' alot to get into the right position
-feeling like an artificial restriction
I know Arma 2 is aiming at sim people (and I like it, I come from all the Jane's Games and also worked on a game called "Soldner" which was fairly realistic) but getting rid of that sluggish movement doesnt contradict realism. In fact it is not realistic to limit movement to animation sequences as you will never be able to animate a character like it would move in real life and thus will never be able to create an authentic feel of movement while binding it to the animation.
Thanks for reading.
Edit:
My suggestion would be: Add a new key, like SHIFT does for walk, that makes the soldier go really slow while putting all effort into maintaining a stable view down the ironsight. That key would probably be CTRL, just becauses its handy.
Game crashes after playing 2-3hours

Its primestable with "lots of ram" tested.
Thing is, I played with 1.03 and no crashes. I m into software QA, so I already did all the obvious checks.
I uploaded the crash logs:
