  1. I'm looking for a voice actor for a few lines in English for a mission on Sangin. Anybody up for it? :) EDIT: mission plans have changed a bit, no voice acting needed any more
  2. I played them all, and I always hated the scroll menu. For weapon selection I like how ACE did it, shift + number keys to directly access your weapons.

    Hand Signaling & Commo Rose

It all depends how it is implemented. Commo rose can be very useful if done right.

How Strong Will The PVP Scene Be?

First of, that is just an opinion and depends on how you prefer to use the arma platform. Secondly, it doesn't mean smaller scale scenarios can't be fun as well. Heck, even with coop most communities or clans probably don't have more than 20 players at the same time (excluding bigger more established arma communities or clans). Arma is a very broad platform for different types of missions and gamemodes, and it does not necessarily mean small scale scenarios cannot be fun (what about all the small scale special forces mission that are available for example? Should we just ignore every mission with 50 players or less?). There is something called game mechanics, shooting mechanics, movement mechanics etc. which all influence the gameplay of a specific game. Difference between games is not only about size of the map. Comparing small scale arma pvp scenarios with CS is just complete nonsense to be honest. Actually, I think 5v5 on 300mx300m can be very fun. It just depends on what you prefer.

How Strong Will The PVP Scene Be?

I think you do not take into consideration new blood who might buy the game just for PvP. I mean, the general origin of this community has always leaned more to a co-op kind of game, these roots can be found at Operation Flashpoint. It's not so strange PvP never really flourished or could be on par with co-op availability. But if there is a good vanilla system available people might even buy arma 3 for PvP instead of mostly buying it for SP/co-op. This is a circle with more PvP players enhancing the PvP scene, while a more intuitive and better accesible PvP experience (no mods, continuity etc) attracts more players which in turn enhances the PvP scene, rinse and repeat.

    Hand Signaling & Commo Rose

For hand signals or for all (most) of the commands? :)
  7. You can create all of these extra ranks by renaming the slots in multiplayer. Like others mentioned, the ranks in the editor are just about how AI takes command and who listens to whom (as far as I know). You can make a complete custom chain of command using the Name option of the playable units which will be displayed in the slot screen. When using this system, anything is possible :) We do it with our custom missions as well. You can make a whole brigade if you want, with HQ, platoon commanders, staff sergeants, 1st lieutenant, 2nd lieutenant and whatever else you need. The editor ranks are just about how the AI works under the hood IMO.
  8. Experience and your own preferences I guess. Of course like Chortles mentions as well, you might need or prefer a different caliber etc. But I think it also comes down to what you like, and you will only know this by trying :)

Can play MP with Alpha Lite?

First, start accepting that this is an alpha, so it's like an early treat, a bonus, something we can do and help with DURING development. Secondly, if you want multiplayer so desperately for free, simply wait for the demo once the full game is released (assuming there will be a demo like arma 2, which had multiplayer as well). So you can play now, for free (with a limited alpha), if you don't want to wait you can pre-order with a massive discount and get full alpha access, or if you can wait you will eventually get access for free with the demo including multiplayer. Every choice has different trade offs. You either have limited access, you have to pay money or you have to wait. The choice is up to you what you prefer. You can't have all the benefits at the same time, just like in real life. A) freeriding (limited access, no MP) B) paying / preorder (full access) C) waiting (free demo MP access)

How Strong Will The PVP Scene Be?

Tournaments like Arma Wargames or Theatre of War for example? Every sunday ~ 35vs35 battle over an island fighting for specific "active zones" (or a different mechanic depending on the campaign) in an ~8 weeks campaign. You sign up for an army and will fight with that army during one campaign, and it's easily accesible without any real formal requirements (just the game and a mic).

Can play MP with Alpha Lite?

Steam has nothing to do with the fact that a game is singleplayer or multiplayer only. Where do you get this idea? Steam is first and foremost a distribution platform for games, a digital store. Secondly, it provides tools for developers to implement into games via Steamworks (which is not yet the case in the Arma 3 alpha as far as I know). Because something is on Steam does not mean it's a multiplayer game. Steam has nothing to do with that. There are hundreds of singleplayer games sold on Steam. So something is wrong with you if you play a singleplayer game on Steam? Abusing the ArmA community? Abusing? Giving free early access to a limited part of an alpha is abusing people?? Dude, where do you come from? :P
  12. Wait till the beta or full release (or just give him the invite), BUT explain to him that anything that he wishes will probably available by the time it hits release status. Show him some examples from Arma 2 addons, like WWII mods, Vietnam mods etc, so he can get an idea as to how customizable it all is! 100% guerentee that modders will make current-gen equipment, gear, vehicles, soldiers etc. Issue is not IF, but WHEN :)

    Not impressed

So it's all about graphics for you? Not interested in improved movement mechanics, improvent UI/customization, physics etc?
  14. How often? Everytime I launch Arma to be honest :) As long as you are part of an open community or a clan which suits your playstyle, you can get this gameplay any day of the week.

"Save As" doesn't save all items

Isn't this how it always worked with the editor and Arma? That you always had to copy custom script etc. to the new mission folder? Or do you mean a feature request instead of bug?
  16. I have been thinking about this too. Here is a copy of a post I made elsewhere in this forum, which I guess fits this thread/topic: Today I was thinking about something: with the new and improvement movement and shooting mechanics the PvP aspect of Arma has already improved a lot. It feels more natural en you are not fighting your character while in heavy firefights against other human players. OFP/ARMA is based on the premise of full customization and modding, which results in a full range of different community made game modes, missions, mods etc. etc. The things we all love about the ARMA series. However, stuff like this comes with a price. Things are fragmented, some PvP game modes can be completely different from others (with different role select options, weapon select options etc, depending on mod, mission and author), it can be cumbersome to join a random server running all kinds of mods etc. But of course ARMA needs to stay open and moddable like it is now. But what if, on top of what we have now(!!), BIS also launches a more "closed vanilla PvP platform" which you can access from the main menu (Multiplayer > Give_it_a_name). This will show you all servers running specific PvP BIS missions (for example in line with BF3 conquest, squad rush etc) which are not moddable and always accessible for anyone and require vanilla. The game types are official gametypes provided by BIS. You can always jump right in and know what to expect. It includes a whole lobby/squad/role/weapon system etc. specifically developed for this "closed system" (and lots of filters to find your type of game/server). Basically an official PvP game inside the ArmA 3 environment. You can take this a step further, and also include CQB game modes / maps ala Rainbow Six: Raven Shield for example (with pre-set mission lists which can be put into specific order, build in number of rounds, round timers between round with weapon selection screen etc). So this would be an environment run by BIS (not the servers, but the platform in which servers can be added by the community), which every vanilla player can easily find and join, with an overarching continuity in experience, gameplay, squad features etc. Very accessible without sacrificing the tactical slow paced game play we all love! This way the full range of possibilities of the Arma framework with tactical slow paced game play is addressed. We will still have our beloved co-op, we will still have our custom pvp and tvt developed by mission makers, development teams (project reality etc) and we have a more confined regulated experience with continuity in features and game modes filling the gap for users who like the premise of for example games like BF3 but don't like that type of gameplay. You know, I played BF3 for about 30 hours when it was released, the core idea is great (big scale pvp, combined arms etc), but the excution is not my thing (arcade, no simulation, etc). I also liked to play games like Rainbow Six: Raven Shield TvT, absolutely awesome, but no other developer currently has this type of game released recently. With all the improvements of Arma 3 I think it can provide a broader experience separate from what we already have. I know there are custom missions replicating things like this, but there is no continuity and poor accessibility to easily jump into this type of games. And not just front-end cosmetic changes, but also a default role select or weapon/gear selection screen before mission start or in between rounds, default scoring systems, default respawn mechanics or revive/heal mechanics across the board etc. Because if you look at games like Bf3, these confined games deliver always the same experience, because only the developer provides this experience. With ARMA, thank god, this is not the case. But it might be beneficial for the PvP crowd so to speak, as an optional part of the game.
  17. I'm not really talking about the fractured community, because that's no issue TBH and there will always be modded and vanilla and any mix in between. I'm more talking about an experience that can be provided with more continuity within a partly closed additional system. So not just front-end cosmetic changes, but also a default role select or weapon/gear selection screen before mission start, default scoring systems, default respawn mechanics or revive/heal mechanics across the board etc. Because if you look at games like Bf3, these confined games deliver always the same experience, because only the developer provides this experience. With ARMA, thank god, this is not the case. But it might be beneficial for the PvP crowd so to speak, as an optional part of the game.
  18. Ok, hear me out before jumping to conclusions too quickly with all the hate towards stuff like BF3 etc. Today I was thinking about something: with the new and improvement movement and shooting mechanics the PvP aspect of Arma has already improved a lot. 19. Yeah thanks, I saw that one as well. I'm more worried that it's balanced with respawn in mind. I don't like respawn. I might try the special edition he made without respawn, but if the mission is balanced as one which requires respawn, I'm not too confident if the experience will be as good as all other missions we've played made by nkenny :)
  20. Is this baf mission pack build around the idea that you will actually need respawn in order to be successful so to speak? For example we were able to play missions like Careless Hammer, Missing Metal, Perenz and Cartwheel without respawns, but I'm not sure if these BAF missions are more "heavy" and build around respawn as a useful game mechanic? Is it possible to give any indication as to how you see it/developed it?
  21. Server FPS influences user FPS. If the server has to do all the calculations your problem we get even bigger. Recently we had an insane mission, due to an error the load on the server was immense. The server FPS plummeted to about 1 or 2 FPS. this affected all users, for about 30% of the players it became impossible to play. I had 5 FPS, this was on Utes (small map!), while usually I get about 20 to 28 FPS. So it also really depends on the server hardware, the mission and the way it is scripted, how the AI is spawned, etc, and the client machine. If the mission is well optimized and server FPS is normal you should get good results. Really, there are a lot of different factors in the equation which influence these kind of things. Exactly, its about the way its done. And arma has a sandbox ai, it's about how autonomous the ai is on itself. With arma the ai will do everyhing autonomously in a sandbox world. One of the reasons why sp missions in arma campaigns can go in the shitter because for example an important person died because the ai can wage a war by themselves. Everything can be done dynamically, they can decide to take a car, will give higher priority to different targets, can call in reinforcements, can patrol an area completely autonomously without any pre defined waypoints, they can retreat, ambush, give up etc. etc. etc. Other games usually set a certain behavior for specific spawned ai with predefined way point, actions or triggers dictating the ai what to do. If every ai on the map is autonomous and has to constantly decide how to operate given changing circumstances etc., yes this costs a lot of CPU but you get an experience that no other game manages to deliver :)

    Does wind affect things yet?

There is an option for wind gusts in the editor, my reasoning was this would influence flying (in the future). But that's just a wild guess/wish,mno idea.
  24. Right, so BF3 now has maps of over 225 square KM with the same level of detail as Arma 2? Did I miss something? And like others stated before me, you have absolutely no prove or any evidence to support such random statements :) Did you ever play BF3 with a 225+ square KM map and a viewdistance of 10000, 200 autonomous AI, triggers, scripts, and all other stuff the game needs to calculate etc? ;) It's funny, you're talking about 25% of the smallest island that will be featured in Arma 3, an island which is 20 square KM. The other one (Altis) will be 270 square KM, at least 13 times bigger (don;t know if you can multiply KM^2, but at least it should be a lot either way). So BF3 will be able to do the same thing, with 2% the map size of Altis? Great job BF3! Will definitely be the same experience eh :D You sir, are comparing apples with oranges :dancehead:
  25. Played Careless Hammer tonight.... awesome Might get a video online for that one as well :)
