  1. I wasnt going to get sucked into this, but since you're still spewing this shit, I feel I must say something...

I just spotted, lased and then hit a T-72 at 4573m. Using nothing but the FLIR view from an Apache hovering at 2000 ft.

Thermal Imaging is not some uber amazing tool which will highlight all your targets super-duper-bright for you to shoot at.

Have you ever even USED a thermal imager in real life, or are you basing your comments off of armchair general-ism?

Thermal imagers in real life also constantly adjust, they can also be locked to a specific brightness and contrast, much as it can in VBS.

You're only dissapointed because you clearly have never used a real system, and have not experienced its flaws and limitations...

Thanks, you said everything that was needed.

  2. I hope the FLIR in OA is better than in VBS 2, as the FLIR in VBS 2 is okay when the camera is up close, but pretty worthless/sucks from a few hunderd meters away.

I was truely disappointed with the VBS 2 FLIR asfter seeing it in action. My hopes were based on the videos I saw of VBS 2 FLIR. And those are real, but taken from a camera standpoint which is very close to the target. If I take a ride in the Apache in VBS 2 and try to find a traget truck a few hunderd meters away through the gunners sight, I'll have a hard time spotting the truck. In that sense, and I hate to say it, Operation Flashpoint-DR implemented it better. You can actually see your target. Although the FLIR in VBS 2 is more advanced, it doesn't pop up unless very close by. And that is highly unrealistic.

If there is no render to texture added, all the FLIR in the world isn't going to make the vehicles more realistic. Seeing that there is no texture to render in VBS2, I don't see it coming to OA. Which by itself means, that those hoping for a more sim like experience flying helicopters and driving tanks will be disappointed like in Arma 2.

We can only hope that they do it better than in VBS 2, else it will still be arcade like, which by itself is ashame, as the engine would be capable of more if an investment was to be made. I still look forward to OA, but I don't expect wonders. I'm affraid we will end up with a simple port of some of VBS 2 features. And that is it. And after having played VBS 2 myself, that isn't all that special, and I'm sorry to say that.

Same applies for the laser sights and such, they don't add much to the game. I was most impressed by the VBS 2 sounds, which are way above those in Arma 2. Maybe VBS 3 will bring it closer to what I would envision of a vehicle and infantary war simulation.

whats your basis that the VBS2 FLIR is not any good, and, dear god, that the DR FLIR is better?

VBS2 FLIR, not exactly miles away, but not close either. Looks very convincing

  3. I've picked up both the rangefinder and the laser marker with their proper batteries, but neither the action button, nor the R or any ACE buttons makes it work. Where is that explanation?

And I should mention that I have yet to be able to switch to a special grenade via F and the USP SD pistol has no texture with the latest update.

Do any ACE team members read this thread to answer gameplay questions? Because as far as I can tell the wiki doesn't describe the features in any detail. Balaclava "requires some gameconfig setup." Gee, thanks.

to use the range finder, select it as your weapon, hit r, "fire" it.

  4. But one of the nice things you get with the current way, enforcing the whole package, is that you pretty much know what youre going to get when you hop onto a ACE server in terms of teamplay. People work together seemingly a lot better with ACE vs vanilla. Even going onto a server playing Domination - infamous for people pretty much solo playing - and theres going to be, to a certain extent, a good deal of teamwork. Now imagine if, for example, a server could disable the stamina system and keep the ruck system. You know theres going to be some ass running around with a SMAW/Javelin and enough rounds for it to take out a tank batallion and a sniper rifle with thousands of rounds of ammo.

Theres still no LESS choice when it comes to playing ACE, vanilla doesnt let you enable/disable anything that ACE has removed the choice to. Every aspect is improved with ACE. You still have the choice to NOT play the mod.

  5. Did you update the updater recently? I had the same problem until I updated. Although now I have to start the DL through the web, I can't select 1 or 2(and so on) anymore.
@Manzilla, guess sickboy broke the updater in the latest update huh? Well, I guess I have to DL through the web as well... hope sickboy get this bad boy working again. :)

I believe there is a shortcut in the Start > SIX > Six Updater Suite called "Six Updater - Console" which has the same function as pressing 2 on early versions.
