Engaging from more than 500m plus ?

I then ran it at 400m and 600m, and as before the squad never saw me until I began firing, then they returned fire and slew me. However, at these longer ranges they took longer to spot me (around 20 to 30 secs) even though I was firing. Also, at 600m I don't think any rifles were firing at me, just the squads 2 machineguns. PS- the squad contained this 'Marksman', but whether he ever fired I don't know SUMMARY- At around 300m or more, the enemy usually won't spot you (even if you're standing), as long as you don't fire. At longer ranges out to around 600m and more, standard riflemen tend not to engage you (even if they can see you) because their weapons haven't the range, but their MG's will engage at long range. (But as always remember these were just tests, and results may vary during games depending on various factors such as difficulty level, visibility, weather, day/night, weaponry, moving, crouching, crawling, prone etc)

Engaging from more than 500m plus ?

Second test, 300m:- I'm standing stationary (not firing) but they can't see me! Holding the right mouse butt zooms them close- After 2 minutes they still haven't seen me so I begin firing- and am cut down by a storm of return fire about 10 secs later-

Engaging from more than 500m plus ?

SOME SPOTTING TESTS (Vanilla Comb Ops 1.57 Desert map, Regular difficulty, ) First test, 200m I place a Blufor Rifleman (player, standing) and a 12-man Opfor squad 200m apart- I start the game and the Opfor squad instantly sees me and cuts me down within about 5 seconds-

    Factions Showcase

I suppose we could build our own Showcases in the Editor anyway, by just plonking a bunch of units/weapons/vehicles/Air units on the map then going in to play with them.

Engaging from more than 500m plus ?

600m is quite a long range so don't be too hard on them, and if you're wearing a sniper suit (and prone) they probably can't see you properly. At shorter ranges they're quite accurate, in fact some people think they're too accurate. Set up a new test with Opfor groups at 400m/ 200m/ 100m then come back and tell us what happened..
  6. I'll set up an editor test but first I need to know what kind of vehicles, (Tanks/APC's/armed cars etc?)

    Expansions and such

Yes but the point is that anybody on a limited budget (kids/students/henpecked hubs etc) can make do with the Lites for a while until they can scrape up the cash to buy the addons..:)

How much RAM does the typical ArmA player got?

I get the occasional freeze too, but I'm not as lucky as you because the freeze won't allow Task Manager to open, so I have to switch off the power and reboot from a cold start, plus I've lost any game progress I was in the middle of. I dunno what causes the freezes so I just have to live with them (sniffle) My system- Intel Core2 Duo E8500@3.16GHz RAM 4.0GB Dual-channel DDR2@400Mhz NVIDIA GeForce GTS 250 1024Mb WinXP Home SP3 HannsG 28" widescreen
  9. Uninstall the demos, they might be interfering with things. Then uninstall OA and any remaining bits of AA2 etc so you'll have a fresh clean sheet. Then try installing AA2 again. If it works, install OA into the AA2 directory and they should automatically combine and put a "Comb Ops" icon on your desktop for you. I used disks like you and it worked at the second attempt AFTER i'd cleared out the old demos and gunk, and tried again.

    Expansions and such

Patch 1.57 gives us free BAF and PMC, and the graphics quality is okay unless you get up close, then you'll notice vehicles might be missing some rivet lines etc, or the guys uniform fabric is slightly blurred. But during play those things aren't really noticeable and we can live quite happily with them. Here are some BAF screenshots I just took, this is not the addon package, it's just some of the free units that came with 1.57-

Number of rounds to drop target ?

5.56mm is only .22 inch, so i often wonder how Brit/US troops feel about going into action with a little .22 rifle? By contrast the AK-47 fires bigger 7.62mm rounds which hit like a cannon. PS- there are quite a few AK-47 vids on youtube, here's a shot of a penetration test between a NATO 5.56mm round (left) and an AK-47 7.62mm round (right) fired into cinder blocks, the 5.56 stops, but the AK wins hands down by blowing the block apart and punching clean through. But accuracy-wise, the 5.56mm is better, so it all comes down to what people prefer, hitting power or accuracy. Personally I'd take the AK because it can punch through cover and get the bad guy behind it. VID-

Do infantry scounts have special ability?

You can crawl around prone in open ground in full view of the enemy and they might take a full minute or more to spot you. Don't believe me? check out these screenshotted tests in the 'Spotting the Enemy' thread- http://www.thefewgoodmen.com/thefgmforum/forumdisplay.php?123-Armed-Assault-II

    Apache artificial horizon

If anybody thinks the AA2 graphics are crappy, they've probably got a crappy computer that's not up to the job of displaying them properly..;)

Do infantry scounts have special ability?

I like to keep my squad together at all times, then if they see an enemy they can all shoot at him together..:)
  15. You sound like a very well-organised bunch of guys so you should live long and prosper..:)

Show enemy indicator on HUD in squad mode.

Yes we need eyes like hawks to spot the enemy. And just because your squad can see them doesn't mean you can see them, as there might be a bush or tree blocking your line of sight. To play it safe, go 'Prone' (key Z) to hopefully make yourself almost invisible and it'll give you time to look for the enemy, and time to glance at the map. Go here and scroll down to the "Spotting the Enemy" thread to pick up some clues- FEW GOOD MEN- http://www.thefewgoodmen.com/thefgmforum/forumdisplay.php?123-Armed-Assault-II

Number of rounds to drop target ?

Calibre and impact velocity definitely makes a difference, here I make a poor slobs knees buckle at 1000 metres with an M107 50-cal sniper rifle (the recoil kicked the sights up)- SNIPER RIFLE TESTS and SCREENSHOTS- http://www.thefewgoodmen.com/thefgmforum/showthread.php?7436-Sniper-Rifle-Tests

    How to attack this position?

And like other guys have said, take your time without hurrying and avoid doing a Butch and Sundance..:) Here are a couple of screenshots from a mission we created over at the Few Good Men club that illustrate the "no hurry" approach- My squad approach an enemy ville so I order them to drop prone in Line formation and just eyeball for a while. After a couple of minutes this bad guy breaks cover- So we blow him away. (And yeah I know lying prone in open ground is not always a good idea but hey, we had night vision goggles and the enemy didn't, it's all a matter of weighing up the risks for given situations) PS- that Mission is "The Residents Arrive", go have a crack at it if you like. I also did a full debriefing with screenshots for newcomers to pick up tips- FEW GOOD MEN- http://www.thefewgoodmen.com/thefgmforum/showthread.php?7400-FGM-3-The-Residents-Arrive-v1.1

    How to attack this position?

Incidentally, although Line formation is fine for a nice straight ridge, we have to choose the best formation for other terrain and for built up areas etc, here's a formation guide i did mainly for newcomers-
  20. I don't think Comb Ops is on one disk? They're on two separate disks (or two separate downloads)- AA2 and OA, and you have to combine them yourself, I know I did. Install AA2 first, then install OA into the same directory and they should combine automatically and will put a 'Combined Ops' icon on your desktop for you.

Number of rounds to drop target ?

With a standard rifle I usually fire twice in quick succession with two quick pulls of the trigger about half a second apart because it greatly increases the chance of at least one of the shots hitting him.

Are speed readouts in mph or km/h?

I play the IL-2 flight sim series too and you can toggle its data readout between metric and non-metric. So I use mph/feet because as a Brit i've been using it all my life and it's the only thing I can understand; I'm too far gone now to learn that metric krap..:)
  23. pooroldspike

    How to attack this position?

Forming line is good, but order your patrol to drop PRONE before you get to the top of the ridge, then crawl to the top and with any luck you'll blow the enemy away before they can respond because prones are small difficult targets. However if its grassy and tufty on the ridge you can't drop prone or you won't see anything from down in the grass, so you'll have no choice but to move towards the ridge in a crouch. Try to judge it so that you and your boys stop a little way before the crestline so that the ridge protects their legs and lower bodies, and just their heads, shoulders and weapons poke over the crest. (Tanks call it 'hulldown')
