Will my PC Run this? What CPU/GPU to get? What settings? System Specifications.
Litos replied to Placebo's topic in ARMA 2 & OA - QUESTIONS & ANSWERS
Okay, good. It was a good choice then. PS: Is it true that overclocking your processor is going to decrease it's life span dramatically? I've been told this by my friend earlier today; Generally I'll still overclock it, but at least for the duration of filming in ArmA 2, should I keep it underclocked back to stock speed when I'm not filming? -

Guys, I just bought this hard drive: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136320 What do you think? I was talking to my more experienced techie friends so they confirmed it and out of all options there were this was pretty much the best. There was another 1 TB one but I didn't want to spend 100 dollars on it, I'm on a tight-ish budget. This seemed like my best option. Everyone's telling me it's good, so I wonder what you guys think as well. -

Yeah nevermind the pagefile, I'm not going to disable it. -

That's true, that's why it's not disabled now obviously :p But still, how bad could it be? Why does ArmA 2 need to stream itself to nearly every hard drive? Is this going to seriously affect my performance? -

Well I just punched it up to 14 GB. I can always disable the pagefile to get 4 more GB. But come on, it can't be that bad. I mean now it seems like everything that could possibly go wrong with my computer in terms of ArmA 2 performance optimization did. lol. -

Technically I have at least 25% free. My OS drive however is only 40 GB, and about 12 GB are free. If I need to I can probably pull some more space out of it, but I don't know, I think it's alright... -

Alright, thanks. My OS drive has not enough space left, and I have an internal SATA hard drive that I put in an external case, but I honestly don't feel like taking it all out and trying to put it in to test. It's kind of obvious there's no other thing that could cause a problem. So I'll buy a new HD, a new heatsink fan, and then I should be generally fine, with a good HD and an overclocked CPU - IF, for whatever reason, I still lag behind then, I can always swap my 260 for a 4890, they cost about the same. Thanks to everyone that helped! -

So can anyone confirm that my problem persists in my hard drive? Or, to be more correct, the combination of my hard drive and my not-yet-overclocked processor. I just want to know so that I can go ahead and buy a heatsink fan and a new hard drive. -

Ah, thanks very much for that tip. I just tried it. With antialiasing on my average FPS was 23, with antialiasing off the fps was 25. I was testing on Benchmark 1. That proves that I'm not GPU limited, I think. Well it adds even more evidence, that is. -

Well there seems to be no other factor that can cause this problem except the CPU's current speed, which will be changed as I said, and the fact that I'm using old hard drives. Unless DDR2 RAM could pose a problem? Should be fine though... -

Ah right, those were the benchmarks you were talking about. Alright, I was running on these settings: They seem alright to me, with the exception of view distance, which is kind of crap when I want to make some high up shots. The first benchmark was alright, at 25 fps average. The second was a disaster, at 11 FPS. *sigh* Right now I still blame my hard drives. And I guess my not-yet-overclocked CPU. -

Alright, I just gave those settings a shot. I set everything to being the same except I turned off antialiasing and my resolution is 1600x900. On the carrier intro scene (in the default ArmA 2 menu), I get about 55-75 FPS. I'd say these are the settings I'd want to run on so that my videos actually LOOK GOOD, well, except the view distance, I'd probably want to pop that up a bit, especially for the video that features a plane flying about. Also I heard that my CPU is pretty overclockable, in fact it can be gotten to as far as 3.4 GHz on the stock heatsink, "easily", according to the Newegg reviews. Also someone mentioned reinstalling windows, no I am not going to do that, just saying in advance. Oh and yes I defragged my hard drives. Here are my full specs: Intel Core 2 Quad Q9550 @2.83 GHz (I'm thinking of getting this fan to overclock it with, and I already have 6 fans in my case by the way) 4GB DDR2 RAM GTX 260 MSI P7N SLI Platinum motherboard NZXT Temptest case And a bunch of shitty hard drives. (My OS is running on a faster SATA drive, thankfully). My games (including ArmA 2) are installed on a separate IDE HD, and I record to another IDE HD. So let's see: Someone mentioned that my GTX and processor should be "fine" on medium settings depending on the resolution. That certainly doesn't sound too convincing because as far as I know the GTX is still pretty powerful, and ArmA 2 itself is more CPU dependent than GPU - which is why I got the Q9550, and am planning to overclock it. It also doesn't sound convincing how someone mentioned that getting a new HD wouldn't improve my FPS too much. Then what will? Maybe a combination of overclocking the processor and getting a new HD? Because that seems like the only real option that seems to make sense. What do you guys think? And thanks to everyone again. -

I've got a question. I'm still getting bad FPS after upgrading to a new processor. Generally my FPS is around 25 in an open area and around 20 in a tense forest - at 1000 view distance (in Chernarus). But obviously that's really bad. Putting any amount of units in to create let's say a battle scene will bring the FPS down. Same thing with getting up high in the sky to film a plane fly by, where the view distance is needed at large. Now my goal is to make videos at good fps. Obviously filming brings them down even more. This is my current rig: Intel Core 2 Quad Q9550 @2.83 GHz - I am planning to get a new fan and overclock this to 3.6-4.0 ghz. GTX 260 4GB DDR2 RAM Windows 7 Pro 64bit My friends speculated that the GTX 260 was bottlenecking my computer. Which was weird, because although they both seemed confident that I should buy a 4890 or something, that was not until we realized my game is installed to an old-ish 300 GB IDE hard drive. Yep, IDE, not SATA. All my games are installed there. I record to another 150 GB IDE hard drive. So I'm looking for advice. Is it the GTX, the IDE, or both? I have no problem going out and buying a faster hard drive. I just want to know that I should before I waste my money. Thanks to anyone in advance. -
how do you get the AI to do that? I could really use that.

wow that video was... amazing...

Dude, thank you so much. This is amazing. Also I don't get where do you people find a nukelaunch.sqs? There's no such file that I see in the mission directory. Also it keeps telling me cannot find script 'nuke.sqf' when I try using the radio bravo trigger. Oh, btw, I made a video of it. Check it out! vH_FhJflk3Q

Yeah I'm thinking of editing it and making it so after the soldier rises there's some high action combat and change the ending up a bit. That might put me at ease.

Comments anyone? :p

I made a new video but... it sucks :( Like, I hate it, it's awful. The structure is messed up. Just read the description on the youtube page. bXQrQ-GqdfM http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bXQrQ-GqdfM

Both good videos. I liked the thunder one. I like your odd camera movements, they work in that video.

Hey guys! I'm pretty sure many of you have been wanting to see a cool video about the new Apache helicopter, so I decided to make one. It also takes place on the Avgani map because I wanted to make a video there. Enjoy! Also watch in full size if you'd like. LlE65EntYic

I liked the Bradley shot. ;) Also I think the call of doody music fit to this. ---------- Post added at 11:44 PM ---------- Previous post was at 11:43 PM ---------- I like the "Hi." Good job :D

Haha yeah, the guy was having connection problems and I'm not sure what exactly he was doing before he froze but I was annoyed by the constant chopper sound in the distance so I went to look what's happening. Thanks to everyone, yeah I'm glad you guys liked the marine death scene, I actually wanted to make that look emotional. The chopper scene was also important, and looks pretty good, but there's still something missing imo. Thanks again!

That was actually kind of important...

I worked on this for a very long time but... I hate it. There are a couple of good scenes but I really don't like the movie over all. Thus it failed. It's supposed to be a promo for the tourny I'm in but it's also a bit inaccurate, and we don't play in Chernogorsk anymore. But since I've put so much work into this, I'll still put it out there. http://vimeo.com/8448231 Enjoy.
