You are right. I played OFP, Arma 1 and Arma 2 but somehow the most memorable and "realistic" firefights took place in Arma 1. I can't figure out why Arma 1 provided a better experience, but there are a lot intense Arma 1 firefights that are "burned into my memory" and no Arma 2 firefight ever created this feeling of intensity and realism. Somehow Arma 1 not only felt more realistic than Arma 2, also the graphics did a better job: The animations are pretty bad compared to Arma 2*. but the simulated world felt more stable; there was - for example - far less LOD-Switching. Constant LOD switching (imho) breaks the immersion... * The only exeption: Arma 1 death animations are better than that the death animations in Arma 2. In Arma 1 a body falls fast and realistic, in Arma 2 a soldier gets hit and after a moment the death animation starts and looks more like a dancer performing a death scene on stage, than a real body falling to the ground...

DCS: Combined Arms DCS: Combined Arms gives you control of ground forces during the battle. Use the strategic Command Map to move ground forces, set artillery fire missions, and control the ground battle. Assume the role of a Joint Terminal Attack Controller (JTAC) and designate targets for close air support aircraft, or directly control an armor vehicles or air defense weapons and engage enemy forces. Play DCS: Combined Arms as a real time strategy game, a first person armor warfare simulation, or direct the ground battle from the cockpit of a DCS aircraft like the A-10C Warthog, Ka-50 Black Shark, or P-51D Mustang. DCS: Combined Arms supports both single player and multiplayer gameplay. When in multiplayer, different players can take on different roles such as artillery commanders, tank commanders, pilots, JTACS, etc. DCS: Combined Arms allows you full control of the battle. All roles can be changed dynamically during the battle. DCS: Combined Arms

Optimization and worse graphics: The key to a fivefold increase in sales of ARMA 3
Recta DP replied to Recta DP's topic in ARMA 3 - GENERAL
Yes, they use a lot of new shaders, high poly models, more "decoration" objects, etc. ArmA1 was better suited for players who played on "low" graphic settings. But let's end the discussion... maybe my friends really need new computers ;-). -

Of course the statement was meant to be provocative. I spoke about my friends: If Arma 2 would look at least acceptable on inferior computers (which fulfill the minspecs), not only one person but five would have purchased it (In my circle of friends). Arma 1 was looking acceptable with everything on "low", it had crisp and clear graphics, not much LOD switching etc. Arma 2 is not playable if everything is on "low", it's a pixel mess. It's called "Demo Version" and "Arma 2 Free". But thats exactly my point! They love simulations like OFP or Steel Beasts and want realistic gameplay, they don't care about fancy graphics. The graphics just need to be functional. -

Thats my point: The simulation genre is more about realistic immersive gameplay; graphics are not that important. People who buy a new pc just for BF3 tend to be very young and are interested in a thrill ride, rather than a hardcore simulation. For example, playing Arma 1 "feels" more realistic than BF3 etc., despite the bad graphics of Arma 1. Another example: Steel Beasts Pro PE dosen't even have shadows in its 2012 Version, but you feel like being in a real firefight at times. -

The mobile workstations are used for "work" and this kind of activity has much more priority than gaming and yes, they need the laptops and for example 16 GB RAM, they are software engineers. -

Yes, the laptops are used as portable workstations (Some calculations are done on the GPU.) I have a "fast car", but Arma 2 seems to need a Ferrari. :D -

Yes, but my friends tend to play very little. To buy an expensive gaming-PC for a single game that you play only twice a month is not an easy decision. They have wives, living rooms, etc. most likely they would buy a PS3 or XBox for their television... Really? I also play "Steel Beasts Pro Pe". It has similar graphics as OFP and there is no publicly available armored warfare simulator that is more realistic and atmospheric. The immersion is great, although the graphics are bad. ---------- Post added at 02:08 PM ---------- Previous post was at 01:54 PM ---------- Very well said! -

ArmA2 on minimum settings (especially the vegetation) looks worse than OFP; it really is unplayable, I've tried it several times. Some refused to continue playing and said that they would otherwise get "eye cancer". :D What I still like: There is not that much LOD switching in OFP. The virtual world feels therefore more coherent and convincing. -

We (me and four of my friend) were playing "Flashpoint" for years. Today we are all "working adults" and I'm the only one who plays Arma. Why? My friends are of course still interested in a game like Arma. However, no one except me has a high end computer, but just good laptops. Each of them would buy the game immediately, if it ran on his laptop. The laptops are not bad (Think Pad Mobile Workstations, Price: 2100 $) and most games can be played, but Arma is virtually unplayable. If you scale down the graphics quality of Arma 2, the only thing you get is an unplayable "pixel mess". Me and my friends are not interested in better graphics, but in a proper combat simulation and realism. I would even play Arma 2 with the graphics of "Flashpoint". Arma 2 is actually the only game where I would wish that it had worse graphics. It is likely that the same applies to Arma 3. This is of course quite subjective, but I do not think I'm totally alone with this. -
Hi, I own one copy of Arma OA and I have 2 PCs. Is it possible to install this copy of Arma OA on both PCs and play it in LAN (not online!) with 2 Players? I just want to show a friend how immersive Arma OA can be in Coop and I don't want to buy a second copy just for that single day. Thanks! p.s. I cannot use Arma 2 Free because the missions I want to show him only work in OA (and also not in the demo version of OA).

Arma 2 Addon request thread
Recta DP replied to Placebo's topic in ARMA 2 & OA - ADDONS & MODS: DISCUSSION
Hi, I am looking for islands/maps with very good perfomance (maybe even better than UTES)? Any suggestions? Thanks! p.s Is it possible to play the original OFP or VBS1/2 maps in Arma 2? They must have a good performance nowadays :) -
Hi NkEnNy! Thank you for the update. Should this version (1.4) be compatible with Arma2FREE? Most of the missions still report missing modules in Arma2Free. For example: "You cannot play/edit this mission it is dependent on downloadable content that has been deleted.ca_modules_e_weather" (Rubber Boat, Deadly Games, Carjackers, etc.) p.s. my Arma2Free version is 1.10.80665 Thank you!

Is "Combined Operations" included in "Arma X"?
Recta DP posted a topic in ARMA 2 & OA - QUESTIONS & ANSWERS
Hi, Please excuse the question, but the countless Arma II versions and packs are a little confusing. As I understand it, CO makes it possible to play the original Arma II with the additional features of OA (better graphics etc.). Is that true? If yes, is CO included in the Arma X package? There is no explicit mention of whether it is included or not. Thank you! -
I love your missions! One problem: I want to convince my friends of Arma2 with Arma2Free. Is it possible to convert the LITE missions in a way that they are compatible with Arma2Free? Most of them dont start in Arma2Free: "missing modules" Thank you!
