  1. What if you already have OA installed, and get standalone Arma 2? I can't reinstall OA, Gamersgate isn't giving me my old login info that I forgot. I tried just copypasting OA on top of Arma 2 but that just resulted in errors upon launch. No steam involved here.

Why is this game not more popular?

I really can't find the appeal behind it. The AI are so easily defeated there is no challenge.

    Pakistan Taliban/Al Qaeda War

They don't even have to detonate a stolen nuclear device in the middle of a big city in America, India, or Pakistan to get noticed. A nuclear detonation in a small border village on the wrong side of the border could be enough to trigger a very nasty series of events between Pakistan, India, and the world.

Why is this game not more popular?

It can be frustrating to get into any kind of Multiplayer action in ArmA 2. The majority of the populous plays on "Domination" servers, which I don't understand why. Same process every single town-blow it to hell with artillery/aircraft move in and sweep up the squad of infantry left over, and sit around for 30 minutes looking for the 1 AI left alive in the town. No fun at all. The really fun Co-op and player vs. player missions pretty much require you to join a clan and get access to a server to do so, with seemingly hours of coordination. Call of Duty? You hit "Connect" and you're killing people. There is no reason berate the "ADD/twitchshooter"-mentality of people who enjoy Call of Duty. Online FPS games have been that easy to get into a play as early as Medal of Honor: Allied Assault. If it was as easy to get into a solid game of online play in Arma 2 as it is in Call of Duty and Battlefield, Arma 2 would be very popular as well.

Is there a fix to the M4 sound playing stock?
  7. I still haven't seen or heard anyone say they want to kill simulated Taliban soldiers just because they're from southwest Asia.
  8. I like fighting against US forces in the game because fighting superior technology with inferior technology is more of a challenge and sometimes more fun. But I don't do it just to kill Americans. I think anyone who derives enjoyment specifically from the nationality of the people they are simulated-killing is unhealthy.

    So many black soldiers?

But the military is not composed of just combat arms.

    So many black soldiers?

And even then, I believe most minorities are in service and support positions, while combat arms (especially the infantry) seems to be mostly white.
  11. Come on now. Was that necessary? This ban won't be going anywhere. It has no real public support.
  12. Stiff, these missions give me some amazing replayability. Thank you very much for your continued work!

    Vbs 2

Not sure if this is the right place for it, but here I go. I recently had a chance to experience the use of VBS 2 as used as a training tool for the US military. Unfortunately, I wasn't really impressed. I only had an hour with it, so maybe I missed out on what it makes it more flexible and useful as a tool than ARMA2 alone. Not everyone is as good at video games as they are at simulating operations in real life training. It is more difficult to replicate all your senses and reactions in a video game than to just train in real life. The key factor, I think, is that simulating an operation in a video game simulator does not teach you the same "muscle memory" that you get from training in real life. Clicking on a mouse can't replicate the same feeling as holding an M4 or M240, and holding down keys on a keyboard can't teach you where you need to be and how you need to move in an operation or where you should be looking. Replicating real-life events, or using VBS to show you what an upcoming operation should look like is still awkward and clunky when compared to a real life vignette and walkthroughs. But, as I said, my time with VBS 2 was very brief. ARMA has been touted as a game based on the simulator that is used by the military for training, but I don't seeing it having much effectiveness in that respect at all. At, what is it, $1500 a pop? I don't understand what various militaries are spending that much money for. If anyone who has more experience than I do with VBS 2 as a military training tool, I would like to know what makes it more effective to train than what I saw.
  15. Not me. It is complicated, and while I haven't quite got it working to launch from the main site, it is perfect for updating the addons. After that I just use a regular shortcut to launch the game.

Im Reconsidering to Buy ArmA 2

If you want 2 people to play at the same time, you need to buy 2 copies. Otherwise, aren't YOU conning the developers?
  17. That didn't make any sense in English, no wonder you can't get the thing working...
  18. Most of the heavy equipment would be in the rucksack, not a little assault pack. I don't think anyone could actually sprint very far with all of that on. But that is why people should be setting up ruck areas or ruck plans. There is no point in carrying a ruck on domination where there is no teamwork, though.
  19. No, no you cannot. Be happy you can go as far as you can and you aren't forced to airborne shuffle everywhere when you have a ruck on.
  20. Unfortunately, that is all this game's multiplayer is, until ACE servers start getting up and running and we have more than Tactical Gamer for good coop and TvT.
  21. It is the same argument as for having a crosshair, at least a slight one. I can tell roughly where a weapon is pointed when I hold it, although I do feel that the crosshair is a bit too good. 3rd person is necessary, especially with the outrageously hard to see through grass on Chernarus.

    Arma 2 - Female Characters?

Sounds like a freaking amazing game. And without taxes, militaries couldn't be funded! So why don't we just play the Sims to appreciate the civilian aspect of modern infantry combat?

    Arma 2 - Female Characters?

It is ignorant because women aren't allowed to serve in combat roles at the moment. Their role is expanding, but it is still very limited. Yeah, there are female soldiers, and they do get involved in conflicts at times, but they aren't supposed to. If the demand was real enough then addon makers would compensate. I personally agree with you on your second point, about how there is no moral objection since it is a video game. However, plenty of people disagree.
  24. Maybe you should get the latest version of ACE?

    Arma 2 - Female Characters?

More ignorance from a cranky feminist. I wouldn't be opposed to females in the game, the support vehicles alone are pushing it without any real difference between the guys operating them and regular infantry. I think that ACE has differences, at least in ability to operate vehicles-crew members and pilots and the like shouldn't have the same level of fighting ability as infantry anyways, but they do and it'd be hard to implement. As for ethics, including women as viable targets might be seen as bad as civilian children. I don't particularly care on this aspect, but I know that many do. As I said, though, if there was a strong enough demand for females then BI or addon makers would provide. There is not a demand for it.
