  1. Ahhh I see, so even though it is volumetric it does not react to models/objects because this feature might be disabled/not implemented... could be because of performance reasons.

When driving a vehicle the dust sure does look like its reacting to wind and it looks great hovering over the trees in a mist...

But the chopper creating wind should disrupt it, I guess its not fully enabled.

  2. If a heli lands in a smoke cloud the smokes won't be winded up

Hmmm that would mean the smoke is not volumetric... but it does seem to move in a certain direction... I guess its just random but looks quite good.

Dont know why it kills my perf by 1/2... you have an 8800GT and I have GTX, which is same or slightly faster!

  3. Did a test run in the editor .... placed myself in Chernogorsk and did a small skirmish 4v4... also looked around and observed performance.

I'm also using the beta patch.

I didnt notice any huge improvement but overall I think there is definitely some improvement compared to older Nvidia drivers and patch 1.03, not sure if its the beta patch or the driver though.

EDIT: Running through trees is still a huge performance killer... from an average of 35fps to 22 just going into the forest area above Chernogorsk..... :(

  4. Hi,

I've noticed the smoke effects in ARMA2 seem to move with the "wind"... is this real volumetric smoke done in DX9?

The smoke looks very nice but has a huge perf impact on my machine.

For example, I get 38fps looking at one particular area... I then throw a grenade and keep looking at the very same area... as soon as the smoke fills parts of the screen my fps drops to 15 which is more than 100% fps reduction!

I'm running an 8800GTX and it has no problem with smoke effects in other games, but they might not be volumetric....

How does smoke affect ur fps and do faster GPU's overcome this slowdown?

  5. Hi,

I'm doing the bootcamp missions in the tank, I'm up to the commander part and have to tell my gunner to target and fire on the tank ahead.

The problem is the keys assigned to these commands do not work.... I cannot get him to target the tank!

I've looked through the manual and I'm using the correct keys... what gives is this another bug?

To target = right mouse button hold? It wont work :(

Ok never mind, seems you have to point just a bit to the top of the aiming crosshair in tank view to get him to target! :)

Does anyone how to pickup bodies? I could do it in the Demo but I can only drag in the full version?

  6. Thanks for the heads up!

    More info here:

    This is a WHQL-Certified driver for GeForce 6, 7, 8, 9, 100, and 200-series desktop GPUs and ION GPUs.

    New in Release 190.62

Optimized for the latest PhysX gaming titles: Batman: Arkham Asylum and Darkest of Days.

Installs PhysX System Software version 9.09.0814.

Includes several bug fixes. More information can be found in the release documentation.

  7. Not that specific problem but me and a friend are up to the 5th mission and the desync/lag is so bad that its basically unplayable.

And its NOT our connection, we have just 7 hops between us all at lower than 30ms.... the game has some serious COOP campaign issues which is preventing us from playing on.

I have submitted a bug report to dev-heaven and hopefully something gets fixed.... very disappointed as its a pretty good campaign in COOP.

  8. Sorry to say Gill... but the extra 4GB of memory you purchased will not help with ARMA2.

As you might know working in software, 32bit programs cannot address over 4GB of memory and as ARMA2 is a 32bit executable it will not be able to use more than this.

After many hours of game play and testing I found that ARMA2 uses less than 2GB of memory. The error you saw was most likely a bug unfortunatelly!

Either way that extra memory might become helpful later down the track!

  9. buying both are still a bargain compare with the VBS2 price tag; that is if BI managed to adding long wanted features/changes, and fix all the engine bugs without creating new ones...

Interesting reading the VBS2 requirements on their website, they mention that it only supports single cpu operation and does not support multi GPU's, is this the same for ARMA2? I'm pretty sure ARMA2 uses more than 2 cores and definatelly more than 1!

Wolle, I never expected those enhancements, didnt even know what FLIR was until I saw posts about in in this forum. I guess the engine enhancements I was thinking of were more physics, lighting based... maybe the flash lights will make the lighting dynamic or at least better!

  10. So you have nothing good to say?

    Why did you post.

He made a very valid observation.... in ARMA2 the world is nice but all those things are missing that would be very welcome in an Expansion we pay for...

I welcome the expansion but so far it looks like new campaign, units, sides, map/area but we have not heard anything about new engine enhanacements.... better physics, performance improvements etc...

  11. What did you end up doing? Or did you give up?

I have opened a bug report at the community issue tracker and its being looked at.

I encourage anyone who wants to play COOP and has the same issue to register (its simple) at the CIT and vote for the topic and provide their own examples/files.

    here is the bug report:

  12. Yes I know that as I've followed this thread from the start and I'm happy for the expansion to be coming out so soon.

However I like the game so much that I'd like to finish the ARMA2 campaign before the expansion comes out so we can get straight into that.

We all enjoy various parts of the game, some people like the sp, some the coop, some editor and others only mp... I love campaign COOP with a friend who has been playing coop games with me since 1994 on the C64 etc... so we really were looking forward to this and its just a bit disappointing not being able to finish because of bugs.

dingyisun, thanks for the suggestion but its the bugs/problems which are preventing us progressing in Manhattan mission, the campaign is otherwise not that challenging but a lot of fun!

Looking forward to arrowhead once ARMA2 gets fixed and we can finish the campaign!
