  1. Yes I think it should use more memory... not sure if this has anything to do with the fact that they also plan to release it on console (most console releases use very little memory on the PC as consoles have little!)

I can monitor my whole system in game as i have two monitors and the second monitor is always running various apps to show me system state... even in a big warfare game the memory didnt really go much past 1gb for ARMA2.exe.

EDIT- In saying that however... the game for me has very little "loading pauses" while playing... so I guess 1GB is enough for it to load the map and assets.

  2. The game is very CPU limited.... even at 3.8ghz on a dual core (i presume E8400 or above).

SLI when enabled makes the CPU work harder as the CPU has to do some of the SLI communication work... therefore there are less CPU cycles for the game.

This maybe why you get higher marks with SLI disabled... however in the game you will notice better smoother fps with SLI as the game is not CPU limited in non town areas.

I think the game needs some serious optimisation as there is not that much happening for such fast mhz CPU's to be bottoming out.

  3. I'm still playing the demo and LOVE the game feel and gameplay... however I'm a bit reluctant to purchase as I know there are major issues with FPS.. and I'm a person who just cant play FPS games below 25fps.

I've heard there are problems with FPS in the campaign which seem to be CPU related.

I have done a few tests and in the EDITOR demo I can get pretty good 40 to 50fps... also in the warfare game in the demo I can also get about 35 to 45 fps.. .however as soon as I enter a town (approach it) the fps DROPS to 10 and 15... its unplayable and not fun.

hard to aim and feels just bad... it really would be nice if BIS came here and did a simple post saying yes we are optimising the game, hold on!

  4. Yes I think this is quite a shame with ARMA2... there is no point in hiding in grass, might as well be crouching as the enemy can see you easily from a distance and the grass it actually in your view!

They implemented the grass "flat" system when your roll around... but its useless because there is no grass around you for the enemy!

Shame that these small things spoil the game a bit.

  5. What are the problems with co-op campaign?

Me and a friendly play most co-op games together and are looking forward to playing ARMA2 in coop for the single player campaign... can you shed some more light on this issue as we are about to buy ARMA2 and might reconsider if the coop does not work or has major problems.

    Thanks,

  6. A good FPS in this game would be 30+... in most other FPS games you would want 40+ for smooth gameplay.

I find it really hard to aim and shoot with anything below 25fps.... unfortunatelly some parts of ARMA2 (such as towns) still kill the fps to below 25 for me and thats very annoying... its not a GPU thing... a CPU problem.

  7. Hello KeyCat,

    Thanks for the informative answer!

Good news that it can be forced! How would one know if the particular map/game/server is not forcing at least normal? I guess if I set mine to "very low" when playing MP I would notice it upon entering the game.

Its a big advantage but honestly it looks very ugly and I would prefer a more realistic image, camouflage is a big part in infantry warfare!

  8. I used to love Steam and have many games on it.... until I got burned by Stalker Clear Sky issue....

Patches do not come very often for steam if the developers do not send them to steam... now I know this is not Steams fault but in the end they lose vs retail.

Stalker:CS for example is still at version 1.8 on Steam, yet 1.9 has been out for over 2 months now.... that is why I wont buy ARMA2 on Steam and other games either... Valve are awesome however with their patches and games.

  9. Hi,

While playing with the graphics settings for performance testing, I noticed that the grass in the game can be totally removed with the Terrain Detail setting set to "Very Low".

I havent tested this in multiplayer but it would appear to give a big advantage to those who dont care about realistic nice graphics and want total advantage!

I have included two screenshots comparing the setting to Normal... as you can see the solider in the field is very easily seen with "very low" setting.

Also I'm wondering why the lighting from this street light looks so bad... reminds me of Quake 2 lights back in 1998 :P

  10. Hello,

After playing warfare at night (demo) I decided to shoot the various lamps/street lights to see if they would break and obviously make the area pitch-black...

Unfortunatelly this did not work, unloaded a full clip at one street light and it didnt do anything.

Wondering if this is a bug or just something BIS didnt think about?

  11. Installed this patch on my friends PC today and it worked well, no issues to report with the latest drivers and he got about 45 to 50% more fps in the benchmark....

.....but in warfare (in the town areas) the fps still drops quite low... which is a problem with the game code and the CPU being maxed out.

An interesting thing I found, start MP warfare and stand in the base area... where you spawn.

The CPU usage will most likely be 90% or higher unless you have a 3ghz + i7...

Now press the map button, you will see the CPU drops to about 55% or 60% max.... then when you turn the map off it goes back to 100% cpu usage.

  12. This is a pretty serious FPS game and to play an FPS nicely you need at least 30 fps and over.. anything less than 30fps and you cant hit/aim/play properly.

After extensive tests on two machines (SLI and non sli) I can see that there is some problem with the CPU being over stressed in some areas of the game, such as towns... could it be the micro code for the AI which is new to the game.

The game is GPU intensive but not as much as CPU intensive... you can lower the visual details and get more fps in forest areas... however when your in a town you will still bottom out below 30 fps... even on a 4ghz dual core or a fast 3+ ghz quad core.

Something is not right.... so the first thing should be:

+2 better performance and better optimization.....
