  1. Just thought I'd have a quick rant about why I dont like Steam as much as I used to and why I decided to wait 2 weeks and buy the DVD box of ARMA2.

Just started up Steam and it automatically started downloading a Stalker:Clear Sky update.

I have yet to finish this game and being a hardcore Stalker fan I would rather stay on patch 1.5.8 rather than 1.5.10 which is the latest. I set stalker to "Do not automatically update this game" after getting 1.5.8.

So its quite annoying that Steam is ignoring this setting (this has happened for other games too) and downlaoding the patch.... I tried to stop it but coudlnt, and now my game is at 1.5.10!

Sometimes you may wish to have more control over patches etc... and this is why Steam fails imo.

Getting my DVD copy of ARMA2 tomorrow :)

  2. We had something like this occur last night in the demo and doing one of the seize missions in coop.

Someone was shooting us from what seemed like a close distance but we could NOT see them... we could only see the muzzle flash! I thought it might have been a bug....

Hmm so many annoyances coming out with this game.

  3. Bushlurker, by that time the game will be dead and only a few select hardcore players will play it!

I think if you pay for a game it should come out 90% complete and stable... having to wait 17 months (over a year) before its fixed is an absolute insult and joke, doubt it would win BIS any repeat customers either.

Hope this is not the path they are taking, I've purchased this version but I would definitely not purchase 3 if it came out?

  4. I can confirm problems with these bushes... its not a total killer but yes it does take 1/3 or even sometimes 1/2 the fps away (when scoped) which is very annoying.

For example your running in the open and head for cover... suddenly fps drops to half.. which is like 18 for me and I cant aim properly! Something needs to be optimised in this "linda" technique!

  5. The light they cast is ok... but what about the sky above them?

It looks like games from 1998! Check this pic out:

    http://users.tpg.com.au/yapa/1.JPG

Thats on maximum settings... the top looks like a "rice hat" / cone with various gradients of the light... very ugly and dated!

Same goes for the lights in the distance! I posted this on another forum for discussion and someone else tested on their machine, same results.

  6. I think its a valid post and something that BIS could look at.

If a few users get the same results with their LEGIT copies but using a cracked exe which removes the background protection... then it could be a problem?

I had to finish HL2 back in 2004 with a cracked exe because the normal version would crash, not even boot! After days and even 2 or 3 weeks with Steam support I decided to try it and it worked 100%. Ofcourse I had already purchased the game so I dont think there is anything wrong with that.

  7. I love and hate Steam.. recently I hated it because of Stalker:Clear Sky... the patches for Stalker were released for the DVD and Digital Download version but the Steam version always was about 3 or 4 weeks behind.

Now 3 or 4 weeks is a LONG time when your waiting for that important patch which fixes a game breaking bug. Yes this is not fully Steams fault as GSC should provide them with a patch... BUT to the end customer (me) the Steam system fails because I dont have a patch.

So Steam should really setup a different system where the developers are required to provide Steam with a patch in a timely manner else they lose some of the % from the sales or get penalised...

So now with ARMA2 which is a game that does require a lot of patches... I'm reluctant to purchase from Steam and will not. I'd rather wait a month than purchase from steam.

However with a game such as "Call of Juarez: Bound in Blood" I did purchase it from Steam because its a short game that is very well optimised and I've almost finished it... no patches rquired and onces its done I'll not play it again.

ARMA2 is a long term game so Id rather have patches available as soon as their released.

Also with Steam there are other shortfalls. For example, some games have problems with mods... or mods dont always work!

And patching... you can stop the game from patching but I have found in the past that sometimes Steam forces you to patch the game!

  8. I understand how you feel as the game is so good in terms of gameplay yet the performance really makes it unplayable in some parts (cities...).

I'm pretty sure BIS are working on a performance and bug fix patch... so hopefully we see some good results in the coming weeks. I've pre-ordered mine knowing how badly it runs, I'm hoping for a miracle performance patch as I'm not upgrading my CPU anytime soon (COre2duo @ 3.5ghz) as I believe its fast enough for 9/10 games.. actually for every game except ARMA2 :)

The speed problem you are seeing is because your CPU is getting maxed out, you could probably put the graphics settings up and only lose 2 or 3 fps... yet have a nice looking game.

  9. I cant comment about the AI in this game and Crysis, but from what I saw in Crysis the AI didnt seem to be scripted or use pre-defined path nodes... the soldiers could walk anywhere you put them and fight using cover etc... but thats another topic.

I know the AI is advanced but to bring i7 CPU's at 3ghz down to 30fps basically means the majority of players with decent but older (1 or 2 years) pcs wont get a playable game.

Also as stun is saying, why is the game using 100% cpu usage in the Menu and Editor without any AI navigating or fighting?

I'm on an old machine but still pretty fast (in every other game), its a Core2Duo at 3.5ghz... so faster than the fastest available without overclocking. Yet my FPS still drops to below 20 in the towns...

I know that ARMA1 was patched so I'm hoping they can improve the perf, however I dont think we'll see a miracle like in ARMA patch 1.14 where they stated 100% performance improvement!

I played OPFlash1 on a 700mhz Athlon XP :) back in 2001 and it seemed to run fast for me.. dont remember having perf issues back then. Still have the box and cd, in as new condition :P

  10. I think most people already knew this but its good that you point it out to the new players.

I dont think the AI is that extraordinary that it would require so much power from even i7 3ghz machines.

So I think its pretty badly optimised and has problems... after all these are the same guys who made ARMA1 and that ren like a dog until a few patches later.

  11. Cant agree with the OP..... when your playing on low settings and the game looks like crap... and you trying to aim at a distant object at <25fps you start to get bored with the game.

Sure if it ren at <25 fps but looked as good as it does on V.High then you could accept it... but its just lame playing at unplayable FPS (hard to aim) and looking at very dated graphics.

Besides I think its very hard to aim and fire correctly with less than 30fps...

  12. Anyone have any news about EB (Electronic Boutique) here in Australia?

My friend went into the EB shop the other day and they told him the game would be coming out on the 7th of July. So he pre-ordered it... today I went into EB (different shop) and pre-ordered the game.

After I had paid the guy told me they would call me on the 20th of August when it arrives.... WHAT?

He then said the game was not coming on the 7th at all... so whats the deal here?

Why are some people playing 2 or 3 weeks ago and we have to wait till the 20th of August? No wonder PC piracy is rife if you cant even buy the game.

Anyway I dont really want the steam version but I'm not waiting till the 20th of August for EB to get their copy.

Anyone in Australia know a retailer which is selling this game?

    Very annoyed!
