    DNC Leaks

Different cultures, the Brazilians are probably out for genuine change whereas here the bloggers are pretty much just doing it to feel good.
  2. That would be like saying we should have not used any of the features offered in operation arrowhead because a number of persons only bought base Arma 2. I understand there is a desire to "not split" but how far does it have to go before the community is splitting itself?

    France General

How is the population handling their decision I wonder, I'm genuinely curious if the people are fine with them being treated in the same way as their own authorities would them (finally) or if they are outraged by it. Human rights are great and all that but if anything it makes these people laugh at us. I'm normally fine with innocent until proven guilty but it becomes difficult to defend in a case where someone was seen by many comitting a heinous crime much less a massacre, and even worse when they already have a record. Of course there are dark sides to this such as witch hunts, falsified evidence to get persons killed and so on. But I'm not gonna lie, the idea that a criminal is being fed, bathed, clothed, given shelter, and a free workout regiment while being in prison seems a lot less than just when law abiding citizens going without because they can't afford it It doesn't really seem all that fair that you can get the same sentence for comitting a small crime than you can for multiple murders...heck just look at charles manson, after all he did and the guy still gets to be given most of the basic needs much less live. Fact is we're seeing crimes disspratortionate to what we normally deal, and perhaps in light of that such cases should be moved to the front of the que to get them done and over with, because lets not forget a prison meeting is also what helped formed ISIS.
  4. Since were doing tips and suggestions, I have three- Firstly and this is a huge one. Double tap G to grab an edge or vert but only have it move along a connecting edge or vert, this will allow you to make precision tweak without having to tweak the other two axis because your point may have gone slightly away from the body.aa Secondly always use the mirror modifer unless the model is highly asysmetrical. Even if it is only slightly, use it and tweak it later, it saves a ton of work. Finally, If you use subdivision to make a cube into a sphere to eliminate poles and allow for better face distrubtion, then be sure to use the "To sphere" command afterwards and fiddle to get the shape right, otherwise it will look a smidge deformed. Also make sure that your subdivision modifer sits UNDER the mirror modifer, otherwise it will not "connect" to itself on the other side, and you'll be left with an ugly crease. Also let subdivision handle those 'fluid' shapes, for example when building airframes now I build a very low poly, blocky model in a vague shape then let subdivision round it out for me. Doing this lets you tweak the frame to your liking with so very few verts necessary. http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/ee200/NodUnit/Mi-27subdiv%20phases_zpslfscxwo5.jpg For example phase 1 on the far left is only meant to get a general shape, its subdivided counterpart sits below. Next shape add edgeloops to tighten the curvature or where there needs to be more change. When dealing wit holes use only eight sided circle gaps, it offers an even distribution of points and plenty of verts to expand from, and it autmatically becomes 16 at the first subdivision. This method is helpful for anything that has a 'fluid' form, organics, aircraft, and ship hulls.
  5. Time, resources, space saving. Making new turrets means new design, new UV mapping, new texturing and all that entails, new rvmats, new p3d setup and all of its LOD's. Or you can use the same turret with a different paint scheme which is essentially painting on the bottommost layer so all the details remain. I wouldn't call it lazy so much as efficient in this case, time = money and all that jazz and if the worst thing we have to deal with is the idea that some manufacturers may be selling to both sides then oh well.

    multimaterial preview in viewport

Nope, the viewport preview works through the texture field, not the channels in the rvmat, otherwise you'd also be able to see the normal and specular map along with the diffuse.

    New Poly limit?

I did, we had to use a more optimized cockpit at the time because the pilot and gunner view had to get a proxy for the canopy because polycount, so probably around 30K. For the test I decided "I'm just going to try and murder my computer" and tossed the pilot visual cockpit as well as the co pilot, and all of the instrument symbology which gets up there as well...everything possible and mashed it all together. I'm impressed at how well the game ran with the inclusion of all that was going on, even moreso considering that particular helo is so script heavy. It really is impressive how many polygons the RV engine can handle and not bog down, heck it even does a great job with textures too all things considering. Now if only the engine could somehow get past the 60km render and collision limit.

    RVMAT glass problem

Ah okay, normally I'm looking into vehicles, ya learn something new every day.
  9. nodunit

    View Pilot Problem

First question, is there any glass? I'm guessing no because I don't see a glare but never hurts to ask, secondly are the vehicles being rendered as proxies and if so are the proxies included in the pilot view as they are the external?

    View Pilot Problem

What is the problem? If it's related to the light then I'm afraid you're out of luck on that one.
  11. nodunit

    RVMAT glass problem

First suggestion, check your texture in textview and enablge RGBA, if the texture doesn't turn red then go back to the program you made said texture in and check the channels, you should have Red, Green, Blue, and Alpha <- this defines the opacity with white being most visible to black being transparent. If this channel is not present then the texure will be considered "solid". Second suggestion is to change the rvmat to super and create some default textures to fill in the gaps and see how that works, I've never seen "Glass" used as the shader for any window or the like.

    New Poly limit?

For shits n giggles I ran a test on my helo, the true count with the interior view cockpits (that is all buttons, knobs, plates, rivets, etc in 3D) symbology, and radome came to a grand total of one hundred thousand triangles. For giggles I combined all of this and tried it ingame, it worked flawless...so I added a sphere, of which contained eight thousand triangles per, it flew just fine...I tested it in a scenario with multiple helicopters, and then a combat scenario as depicted here. http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/ee200/NodUnit/20160712204647_1_zpsomqqddl7.jpg through it all the only loss in FPS was when the birds first opened fire and were going down, yet through it all the frame rate was surprisingly smooth and keep in mind that is 1.7 million triangles worth of helo alone. I decided to amp the tests up by adding sphere after sphere after sphere and watch my frame rate...the degredation didn't start occuring until I reached this point of hideousness. http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/ee200/NodUnit/20160712220331_1_zpsna5ggbxc.jpg32 spheres which equated to the single helicopter reaching three hundred and fifty six thousand triangles. It still ran but the game was feeling it. It appears as though the game was able to render more polygons of different units just fine but when you start putting all of that into one unit then it starts chugging...a squad of helo's vs the one, however I was able to push up to 200K without much in the way of frame loss, it was when I entered 250 and 300 that it started asking me to stop. Of course I wouldn't recommend going that far and if you want to push into 160K+ then you better save often if you work in O2 as it appears to have a tendency to crash if you perform actions too quickly. I would still like to encourage people to do more with less, we can have more which opens all sorts of doors for us artists but if we can get away with adding something to a normal map as opposed to geometry then we should do that, it also adds the benfit of making the detail more visible with the baked normals with the whole edge highlights, plus theres no point in modelling the treads on an aircraft wheel, more =/= better. (at least when its not a particular unit view ;) roll on HP interiors)

    Visual Upgrade – Feedback

What if there was a system which used something like https://community.bistudio.com/wiki/Geometric_Occludersto determine where to and not to cast more AO... take for example in rainy weather there is some sort of filter that spreads and strengthens AO values where the geometry would not be present, so basically if in geometry then normal AO, if not in geometry then amplify. Of course there are multiple problems, the first immediate I can think of is that the geometry must encase the structures interior and parts that it shouldn't be stronger....there is potential for less FPS by amplifying the AO...and of course the different techniques would yield varying results, possibly to a horrific level. A perhaps less intense concept would be using a deformable mesh to cast a shadow, essentially we're dealing with shadow maps and assigning a texture to a flat plane undernear a vehicle that would show up more and more the further in we get to max overcast. Of course this immediately presents issues with various types of terrain, meaning it needs to have some sort of fluid snapping feature, and how knows how much CPU that needs....of course that could be evicted but its might lead to moments where its clipping into some of the terrain.
  14. Huh...well thats a very odd one, I'm curious to hear the story of why they did it, was it a kavorkian ploy gone wrong or what?

    DNC Leaks

We have a third option in the form of Gary Johnson, and a lot of people I know who were originally going to vote for Bernie are now shifting their focus to him. I figure either way clinton is going to win, she's THE lobby candidate and they have too much money behind her, even if she loses the populous vote I'm sure the electoral college will "Fix" things.

    APEX - what about ships?

Not so awesome really, as mentioned above, this video contains one voice and isn't a discussion, so we don't get to talk about the cons of addons and mod reliance. Firstly yes addons and mods can offer a LOT of content and in some cases unprecidentedly so in what they can do..BUT we must consider how much of this content is ported, Arma 1's samples were opened a long time ago and to this day its vehicles are still making their way into Arma 3. Secondly is the time disparity, consider how many years it takes for some of the biggest addons and mods to come out. It is so easy to look at something released and say "See guys we can just use mods" but it really should be considered how long it took for that to come around, there are mods that have been released for arma 3 that were being propped up since Arma1. For example the BRDM2 from arma 1, the Mi-24, Mi-8 from Arma 2, the list goes on, we would not have this content if BI did not release the assets for free and we would not have a lot of the content we do today. Secondly addon/mod creators don't play by the same rules, we make our content to please ourselves, this means we don't have ETA's, we don't have to fix things when they break, and we don't have to give a rats about how well it runs on someones computer, all of that comes as a nicety, whereas game content MUST perform within a certain standard. In some cases this places the dice in our court as it allows us to get away with things which BI cannot due to their own rules as mentioned since development of arma 3 alpha. And thirdly, the idea of "hey guys lets not buy things because the community offers more content" is a very very dangerous mindset. That is precisely the kind of thinking that would lead other developers to reconsider mod tools and has done so in the past, afterall if someone else can offer to people for free what they would otherwise have to pay for then that makes them a threat. Also he praises the operation arrowhead expansion on its content, operation arrowhead cost full price same as the original game and used much of the same content from arma 2 while adding more, but BI said from the get go that for most assets they did NOT want to reuse previous Arma assets, and it shows when we look at ported content beside current. tldr; saying to not pay for expansions cause the community can offer more content endangers modding, a lot of the content we have now would not be possible if BI didn't release Arma 1 and 2 assets unbinarized, and addon/mod creators don't have deadlines, don't have to ensure their stuff works as close to 100%, do not have deadline ie "When its done" which can become "if it gets done."

    Third person mode & realism

True true, old fart complaining about the kids hehehe. I suppose I'll just duck this one out :) I am glad to see the passion though I think we could do with less of the personal insults, and as always when it comes to arma the key to remember is options, options, options.

    Third person mode & realism

This again? Why this again, why always this again. As stated above its a server option so the people in multiplayer have the option to turn it off, if you play on a server that does not have it disabled then consider contacting an administrator and requesting it, alternatively find a server that does have it disabled. If none do then perhaps that says more about the MP comunnity than the single players that like it.

    Feedback wanted for new youtuber!

DayZ being its own game now has its own set of forums, that may be why you cannot find it on the BI forums. https://forums.dayz.com/ I recommend toning down the BGM volume if you're going to have multiple sound effects, they become somewhat distorted and mish mash into eachother, you want it to mostly be there as something for the audience to hear in the more still moments or to set a general tone, but ultimately it comes second to the rest of the audio.

    Need help getting into modding

First go into your steam tools directory and install Arma 3 tools, then run the program and "play arma 3 tools". Mount the project drive, then click the preferences tab at the top of the window and set up buldozer, this will be your window into the game. After this you will have the default tools set up. Start with the lowermost link and follow the tutorials top to bottom, that will introduce you to oxygen aka object builder and the basics to get your first addons ingame. Depending on how things go in future I would recommend getting Blender, a free 3D modelling program which will allow you to do much more, and acquiring gimp, paint.net, photoshop, or an equivilent 2D editing program for texture.

But they said in court that they were banning neo nazi promotion. And I understand the nobility in trying to tone down hate speech, I understand having someone removed from a public place but raiding their homes for something said on the internet? How far does political correctness have to go before it becomes fascist in nature?

How much would you recommend the Apex Expansion?

If it was due to an update then its not going to matter if you have the apex expansion or not.

How much would you recommend the Apex Expansion?

Greatly, I fell in love with Tanoa when I first hopped ingame. I thought Altis was nice for a walk but Tanoa is the best yet, its so immerssive with the audio, sounds of birds and wind, it really draws you in with all types of weather. It looks gorgeous from the air too, I'm a whirlyhead at heart and Tanoa makes a great playground for me, I could spend hours just cruising around, enjoying the scenery. Engagementwise it offers a different kind of combat from Altis, whereas we had vast open spanses of terrain wherein you could spot moving objects from kilometers away, here we have a large spanse of land with varied terrain density and elevations which could be a nest for an ambush. Furthermore if you are one of those people that were less than thrilled about the similarity in some CSAT and NATO vehicles in ARma 3, or the exact shame chasis being used on various parts then fret not because there is none of that here, especially in terms of the new VTOLs which could not be more different. The thing about mods is there is no garuntee they will always work, there is no garuntee they will always be updated, and there is no garuntee they will perform in MP as flawlessly as a company asset would, so passing because something already exists could biting back in the end.
