God... I'm far too drunk too read through the most recent posts.. I think I'll go to bed, pull the covers up over my head, emerge in mid February, pick up ArmA, play it for 2 days then log back on and see what the latest 'buzz' is. Merry Xmas

Given that the majority of people who will pick up Armed Assault have also played Operation Flashpoint, comparisons are enevitable. They will say ArmA doen't have this or that compared to OFP, It's slower than OFP, It's quicker than OFP, the flight model isn't as good as OFP and so on. I think it would be interesting to hear what people who have had no previous knowledge or experience of playing OFP make of Armed Assault.

I still intend to buy Arma but reading through bug lists, I'm wondering how some of them got through the Beta test? I kinda' feel sorry for those with the Czech version - maybe BIS was rushed during the final stages by the publishers? I hope the German version is more refined because that will have a bigger impact on first impresssions and word of mouth. I gather a lot of people from Europe and some from US will be importing. Anyway, no PC game is perfect form the off now-a-days (hell, they're even patching console games) - especially large free roaming games like ArmA. Have faith everyone ! Remember original OFP? Look at the patches and support BIS gave to that. ArmA might be a bumpy ride in the beginning but it will be very sweet in the end Of course some reports might deter people from buying ArmA straight off the bat, but it's one of those games I think they'll keep an eye out for and keep a bookmark on.

Reading these initial reports my reaction is    If I were to speculate, it's down to the way the publishing deals dragged out and so BIS tried to add more and more of what the community wanted into the game thus intoducing more bugs. It may have been wiser to release a more featureless but less rushed product and then somewhere in the future release an expansion (a la Resistance) with the more interesting and advanced features such as the building / bridge destruction and advanced AI routines having gone through the extra Beta testing. But like i said, that's speculation on my part. I'll still pick up ArmA during the 505 release because I've been looking forward to it and I haven't bought a game in about a year. Also, I have seen the way BIS supports their product so I know ArmA won't be left hanging. It's natural to post what's wrong or bugs you've found, but it would be also be nice to hear about what gameplay elements people are enjoying Â

When people talk about the controls and player movement being sluggish; Is this because of player momentum has been implemented or is it because of input delay or something else? If it's momentum, I think it's just a case of becoming used to it and taking it into account when you perform an action. If that's the case it's fine by me. If it's input delay or something is screwed then it sounds a bit ropey to me. :Q: What happens if you sprint and immediately hit the walk backwards key? Is the change in direction immediate or does your character take a couple of steps to slow down come to a complete halt before walking backwards?

I'm kind of getting a bit confused with all the conflicting reports of how the flying is. If BIS has dumbed down the flying and flight models, I'll be very disappointed. If however, they've attempted to move it in a more realistic direction, I'll look forward to it. Of course, if they have gone for a more realistic approach, it makes sense that you will struggle flying with anything but a joystick.

Thanks for the info Balschoiw. Just out of interest, what was your initial reaction to ArmA? Did it meet your expectations? Do you feel it's essentially OFP 1.5 or do you feel it has evolved beyond that?

1. Any new commands for controlling a sqaud? 2. Does the new command system feel more intuitive? 3. Get in a tank and drive through a forest. Can you? Do you lose momentem with each tree hit? Cheers.

*Let's not turn this into a demand/suggestion/thread* What are you crossing your fingers for? New functions / commands for vehicles and ordering troops? More scripting possibilities? Mutiplayer stuff? Single player stuff? Maybe you're hoping for some interesting feaures of the new island? Personally I'm hoping to see some more scripting power available and proper artillery coded into the engine.

Could a mod please lock my "*HOPE* in Arma" topic: http://www.flashpoint1985.com/cgi-bin....23;st=0 Now the game has been released and people can enquire about certain features to owners of the game, there isn't any reason for any additional posts. Cheers.

Well, now that Arma has been released and we can quiz people about certain features of the game, I think this thread can bite the dust. Thanks to everyone who has contributed and posted their hopes. It certainly made some interesting reading over the year. Fingers crossed you get what you hoped for.

Thanks for the info Ian Malcolm. Happy gaming.

Bloody hell, those screens look good. Congrats to everyone who has a copy. Go, enjoy. Two general questions: 1. How is the soldier collision detection in and around the buildings. 2. What's the A.I. like? Have you seen any of the bounding overwatch that was mentioned in the build up. I'm not not expecting miracles though (crosses fingers for miracles). Convincing A.I. is difficult enough to program in linear games, it must a real bitch to do so in such an open game like ArmA.

At first I thought there must be bad blood between Tiscali and BIS, but they gave OFP 91 %. Â If they gave it a low score because of the realism and they convey that through the reveiw text then it will appeal to those who want a simulation but that shouldn't be reflected in the score - lets face it the first thing people scroll down to see are the marks. It's like reviewing a flight simulator and giving it 10% and summarising with " it's too much like flying a real plane..." Surprised at the screenshots as well. Do they test all games on the same hardware? But I'll wait for a translation of the salient points before coming to a steadfast conclusion on this particular review...

Chill out guys... Not everyone knows the ins and outs of OFP/Arma. I'm still surpised when I browse tactical / war game forums and still see people who have never even played the demo of OFP. @ The_Trooper: Welcome to the forums As KyleSarnik said, it really comes down to the discretion of the mission designer regarding weapons and so forth. One of the major parts of ArmA will be the powerful (but very easy to use) editor, people can make missions to suit their taste. I wouldn't be surprised if it was possible to design a mission that mimics Soldners game design. How did you hear about Armed Assault by the way?
-
The best "blood hit/splash" effect I've seen is in the recent Faces of War demo. It can be argued that it's stylised but it does look very good and packs a punch. *edit* Actually having tried the demo again, it's too exaggerated. The colour is good though. There was a blood mod for OFP where the 'puff' was replaced by a small explosion of flecks and that looked much better.

Just looking at some other gaming forums and found this link: http://p223.ezboard.com/fshogun....3.topic • SSE2 is only required for the demo, the release version of the game will only require SSE. • Most of the issues with the Athlon XP processor were fixed for the release version of the game, the single player game works fine but there are a few residual issues with multiplayer and as such we can’t officially support it.

The US forces vid is terrific. It's the little things I noticed such as the texture of the soldiers glove and how good the tyres of the humvee look. The only disappointing thing is that their not using pilot models in the vids. Old build I guess? Which is a shame as the Harrier flyby at 02:21 would have looked even better with a pilot with a sun visor down. Gah ! Â 2007 can't come quick enough

@ Marshal I'd rather BIS sign with publishers in which they have a voice. Look at Red Storm Entertainment who made Rainbow Six and Rogue Spear which they also published themselves. These two games are arguably the best of the series and RSE answered to know one. They signed to UBI and the Rainbow "franchise" has become more and more mainstreamed and ended up with 'Lockdown'. BIS' after sale support was pretty good with patches and communication on the forums. As for OFP's multiplayer, by BIS' own admission MP wasn't implemented as well as it could have been. For ArmA it has been incorporated at the beginning and I'm sure they've learnt important lessons from their Xbox experience. I don't play MP but if people want to cheat or disrupt a game they will always find a way regardless, even if it's as simple as disconnecting. As for release dates, so what? Yes it pisses people off when companies give a date (damned if they do, damned if they don't) and it slips and slips again. It was true 20 years ago, it's true today and it'll be the same 50 years from now. The only release date I believe is when I'm clicking on START in the ingame menu.

Yeah, I looked at their products and was The only names that jumped out at me were Harvest Moon and Bubble Bobble. However, it's worth noting that ArmA is their first foray into the PC market. As long as they don't have any stupid piracy protection methods I wish them and BIS a successful partnership.
-
Unless there have been adverts for Arma in German, Czech (and other early publishing countries) magazines / websites, I wouldn't be surprised to see ALL publishing dates pushed back to early 2007. It probably takes 3-4 months to oragainse and implement an advertising campaign. Hope I'm wrong though...

Well, IDEA (and ArmA) will be at Invex - Digitex 2006 - 9th to 13th October (I think). Maybe some new information (and demo news) will seep out then.

I wonder if / when we'll get a 'Gone Gold' annoucement ?

To be fair to BIS it must a bit of a nightmare trying to deal with invidual publishers across all territories. It's not really a devs responsability to keep consumers informed; that's what publishers are for - organising press releases and so-forth. I guess the trouble with having many country specific publishers is that they operate different protocols. The German publisher might be very open, letting people play a beta version of ArmA whilst the Polish publisher might be very secrative and keep things under wraps. It's a case of the left hand not knowing what the right hand is doing and is to be expected when you don't have the cohesion that is afforded by a a solitary global publisher. Besides, seasoned OFP players will soon be playing ArmA and we can expect some detailed and constructive opinions in November.
