Terrain and geographical features of islands / map
Callsign replied to colt's topic in ARMA 2 & OA - SUGGESTIONS
im actually working on a realistic glacial/periglacial environment island with geological features, such as kames, moraines and hopefully when a new island programme comes out for AA or game2 i can add cirques with lakes, kettle holes, rock basins, which should be doable in AA/game2. im not making any promises that it'll be finished, but if it is thats a taster! bootneckofficer -
i need new underwear! ok so maybe talking internationally about my underwear was not a gd idea? just a quick note though will the desert remain on this new nogova? bootneckofficer

heya long time no squeak, just wondered what you were planning for the water/river illusion? most islands have no valley bottoms with any "evidence of a river", but its not as hard as people think, just put water loving plants in the bottom of the valley, some rounded boulders and rocks (not the huge ones) and bobs ur uncle! would also be good if these valleys were surrounded by the olive groves, an ruinous "mills" etc. bootneckofficer p.s sorry about dragging the thread back to the front p.p.s if you do have an airfield, dont put it on the smallest island, like the lil island on nogova (krasnowatjimicallit), its unrealistic, humans are lazy in nature, they dont want to have to go by sea to a lil island to get a plane! (lazy ish!

unless they have a basic interior to them when blown up?! bootneckofficer

although im just starting on island making, i intend to make a series of ultra realistic islands (meaning will lag like a bitch!, based on research on real islands and will hopefully make a large mission for each! dont quote me on this though, it depends on if i have time bootneckofficer

heya great idea to have a campaign, any chance the 2 characters will meet? Please can u have the lighthouse keeper either with a huge beard ARgh(! or looking like Telly Savalas? bootneckofficer

any news of an update? flag looks gd looks familiar but not! bootneckofficer

heya, looks gd so far, realistic terrain but objects bit plain, personally id make it a lil smaller, use the BIS spruce tree forest (Nogova ones) instead of old BIS standard trees (that look like theyve come out of a pop up book). use some other textures, especially round the towns and villages, perhaps some walls round some of the farms (crop growing at the farms, fields etc), think how settlement usually look, the church is the centre of communities usually so put it where the public can get at it, in the middle of the settlement. add shops and some more factories, basically make the place look lived in. add rocks at the top of mountains and at the bottom, but make them consistant with the textures ure using, so grey rocks for grey rock texture! in some of the valleys u could have evidence of rivers, reeds and rushes, sounds, rounded rocks Add some more archaeology, we all love to be indiana jones walking through ruins, one of the castles is triangular in shape, square is the norm plus it means u can have more towers etc. like i said looks gd so far, but lil more work and itll be great bootneckofficer

pleasure, people seem to not bother when making islands although the whole atmosphere is created by it. ive studied geology and geography at A level and find it nuts to see some stuff, like cities, people either make a great job of them, like tatu on tonal (which really looks like a jumbled messy LEDC city), or just have 2 cottages a petrol station and 5 skyscrapers! all it takes is a lil more attention to detail when making them. i think i might write a HOW TO on making islands realistic, anyway enough of me ranting looking gd so far! bootneckofficer

this is wierd, anyone know whats going on, addons used- Newland beta3, ukf troops and blb (not shown) bootneckofficer
-
heya guys soz for the lack of info, had to rush off, the problem seems to have gone away, i got rid of a few addons out of my folder and got rid of Newland as well and things are back to normal, thanks for your help bootneckofficer
-
to be honest theres not much to see, basically just the textures just seem to explode out from the unit or object (happened to ukf landie as well) bootneckofficer

any chance of a winter version? looks gd just want a snowball fight! bootneckofficer
-
farm- maybe a broken fence or wall and maybe few more trees around the house, bit of shade and a well - looks gd though maybe another barn? soz, and change the rock colour, the grey ones, they not the same colour as the rock face textures. flag- maybe an italian one with something in the middle like a lion or a golden olive tree! bootneckofficer

looking gd, although dont make the whole island one mound like kolgujev (which looked pyramid shape grr), a better option would be a less steep in general island with hills ^ / \ / \ _ ^ _ ^ _ not / \ more like _ / \_ ish this is because of erosion!!!! loving the village pics, nothing to say lol! bootneckofficer

Looks really good, just need a telly savalas lookalike, a grease gun, donald sutherland and .45 and we're ready to rock and/or roll. any chance of an update? bootneckofficer

land texture wise, take a look at Berghoffs Elati island, i like the look of the dirt tracks he has, they blend in more with the textures rather than the grey roads. have a look at BKMs buildings, some look a sandy/beige colour. id try to keep modern buildings down to a minimum, like petrol stations, but can hide them in the towns if desperately needed. water is another thing u want to emphasise, i know theres no running rivers in ofp, but u can still have gorges filled with bushes and the env. sounds can play water sounds, think dry river beds and gulleys, then wells dotted in courtyards etc. have bricks and rubble around old sites in and around the towns bootneckofficer

Like Mike 31 said, release as you can always update it for AA when it comes out, but so far it looks to beat the pants off most islands that have been released recently! bootneckofficer

order the army's recruitment dvd, theres training on crete (i think) that i was looking at for inspiration, remember that med looking islands are quite rugged (with 50m max cliffs), coves, and dusty, and usually quite historic looking so please please please put the churches at the centre of the community, with small ally ways (i know not very gd for AI). dont clump one type of tree in one spot, nature is random so make it so! main industry is usually olive groves so using the default BIS factory would only work if part of large farm, distribution centre etc. Try and keep the roads flat and level, and if u have to go over a hill edit the hill to look as though a cutting has been made for the road, then add scree that matches the colour of the textures. soz for the lecture but uve an oppurtunity to make a very decent island by the looks of things, type crete into google or something any chance of more pics? bootneckofficer
