VBS 2 1.40 new features video

I almost cried when I saw the scripting features in the editor... Partly because of the months of my life i could have saved playing in the arma and arma2 editors if I'd had those features, and partly because I know they'll never make it to Arma2, all the good stuff will stay in the $1000 plus arma premium content package known as VBS... Damnit! ;)
  2. Rest assured that I and I'd say most people reading this are looking forward to it whatever it contains, and I know this mod is going to rock when its released!! :D RE that youtube vid. Its definitely an indication of the difficulty of trying to recruit the entirety of a fairly large army from a mass of urban and rural poor with little or no education/literacy. Obviously trying to approach this from the view of simply bringing a conventional army up to speed with US tactics and strategy is a mixed success at best and a significant failure to date at worst. I think that if the US/NATO are serious about actually getting the army up to speed they need to start running schools for the army to actually educate the soldiers somewhat, and to start attracting the type of people who want an education. Can't build a skyscraper with no foundations, and in this case that is just what the training taskforces are trying to do.
  3. Honestly even if you did a build using the top of the line core i7 quad core or six core overclocked to shit, two 5970's in crossfire, 12GB of DDR3 1800mhz, and the best SSD hard drive you could get your hands on, I think it would still probably lag a little at some points... The main reason for this is the sheer scope of the game which really could require about as much CPU power as you can throw at it, but this is only relevant with complex missions with hundreds of units present. That same rig would almost certainly be able to run smooth as butter at max settings in a blank map in editor. Basically this game seems to serve as a good reminder of the chokepoints experienced in transfer speeds between cpu/ram/hd/gpu. Despite that somewhat dismal sounding prognosis, its not necessarily a bad reflection on Arma2 or its engine, its basically that no other game approaches the scope and complexity and thus no other game comes close to needing the sheer amount of computer power that Arma2/Arrowhead does...
  4. Are you using ACE 1.5 or 1.3? I had to revert back to 1.3 cause 1.5 kept throwing that error at me as long as I was using the Aussie troops.

^^^ You must have mistaken this for the ANZAC mod thread... ;)
  6. I just updated my ACE to 1.5 but I keep getting an error when I try to run it with combined Ops that means nothing will load, in the editor placing a unit and hitting 'preview' results in the normal loading screen, but then dumps you back in the editor to this error... Arma2 and OA installed separately but junctioned to work as Combined Ops and other modfolders junctioned. It works fine with just OA, but the second I try to run it with Combined Ops and any other mods it won't work. EDIT: Okay partially solved, apparently I'd installed the OA version of CBA by mistake... but even after installing the older version I'm still getting the error... There's also another error in the main menu about unable to create muzzle ir strobe or something like that.. Additional point, I think its a great idea to not bother about the mod supporting the DLC packs, it would take a lot of effort for each pack, and given the engine updates will be released in patches, its a good way to play it. This is spoken as someone who will probably buy the DLC despite not being a brit...
  7. Maybe make the green a tiny bit lighter? but that looks like a pretty reasonable approximation of the ANA hyperstealth stuff! :) Noice! :D
  8. Having tried Dwardens method from a couple of pages back I'm getting as far as steam telling me its preparing to launch Operation Arrowhead, but then it just hangs there forever and never actually launches the game. I'm not sure wtf I'm doing wrong... junctioned the mods, junctioned the A2 folders, and still nothing... This is launching from steam's 'combined operations' option if that makes any difference. *EDIT* OK managed to get it working, the key was deleting the spaces betwen the mods aka "-mod=@ACE; @CBA" whatever needing to be like "-mod=@ACE;@CBA". Now it seems to work, no errors, all the content and the mods are running!!! WOOOT! :D
  9. So after you've done this and the links have appeared in your OA folder you run the _runA2CO.cmd and then the mods show up in the in-game mod manager? Cause I've created the links using the junction thing as described above, but when I run OA nothing shows up...
  10. Ok, I have Combined Ops running thanks to the cmd file posted up, but how on earth do I get the junctionthismod4me thing to work? (edit I'm running win7 64bit) I've tried putting it in the mod folders and running it, tried putting it in the arrowhead folder and then dragging my modfolders onto it, putting it into the arrowhead folder and running it but nothing seems to work. I'm sure this is probably just me being a complete and total noob, but I just can't figure it out, and the readme wasn't massively explanatory on how to run it. Any thoughts?
  11. Totally agree with the above. Seems to me like there's not going to be a real fix till there's a real combined Arma2/OA exe. Till then its just a strap on fix that's not going to provide full functionality for anyone not wanting to play vanilla. I honestly expected better than this, I understand that its difficult in dealing with steam etc, but 'seamless integration with the content of Arma2' this is emphatically not. :(
  12. So I guess we're still waiting for a solution that will allow modlaunchers to work?

    British 3 Rifle Infantry MTP

Well co-incidentally I just made a custom mission using your units with my steam vers of arrowhead which is refusing to launch combined arms from my modlauncher. The units seemed to work fine with the exception of the LMG unit who is holding an invisible m249 (the classnames not working presumably). Apart from that though, I didn't notice any problems... they blend in beautifully too!! I for one can't wait for full MTP and thermal maps! :D
  14. Totally fair, the regular ANA is pretty much what I'd hoped for anyway as they're most of the frontline troops in operations at the moment from what I can see... :) Had a poke around the internets, don't know if this or this is any help but its about the best I could find. Anyway, given most of them seem to have the old woodland BDUs its not going to detract from the realism for a while yet. ;)
  15. What he said. I really hope between BIS and STEAM they come up with a solution to this quickly, cause it's starting to irritate a usually calm BIS fanboy here...
  16. Oh you bloody legend!!!! :D Honestly I was looking over the militaryphotos.net on the ANA a couple of months ago in anticipation of Op. Arrowhead coming out and wondering if anyone was going to represent the ANA in OA. This is great news, definitely will add to that Afghan feeling!:D Any plans on representing the new ANA hyperstealth camouflage that the army's switching to as part of their modernisation campaign? Also noticed there are a few photos floating around with ANA soldiers featuring painted helmets but I've only seen a few and that could just be confined to the Commando units. Anyways, this is awesome news, great work!!! :D
  17. Yeah I have to say its happened to me once or twice, and I've seen it happen to WAY too many AI controlled team-mates, especially if its a larger squad. Worst culprits of course are anyone wielding a squad automatic weapon, as they tend to get up from prone still firing and swing their weapon out in a loop still firing as they stand, often peppering the poor bastard next to them resulting in the oh-so familiar call "5 check your fire!!"... "7 is down". Alternatively there's the light armoured vehicle gunners, who while they don't have the ability to go prone, will engage a target with the main gun, start firing rapidly, then after about 4 shots start to wonder "what's over in this direction?" and turn to look, still idly pulling the trigger on the bushmaster, and skewer the poor bastard who's standing up to sprint forward on the left flank with a 25 mm round through the grape. It doesn't happen to me too often to be an issue, but in all honesty, I'd rather the frequency of blue on blue AI stuff due to this was reduced a little, there's enough factors that result in AI squad attrition without this one making it worse...

    Australians at War Addon Team

Two points to make. 1) Holy CRAP that ASLAV looks sweet! :D 2) Any plans to represent the new mid point DPCU camouflage in the AAW mod? This is not to be taken as actually liking the new camouflage, which having only seen a few photos looks like it's a pretty poor excuse for multi-terrain pattern. Far too much red in the brown, way too light a background colour combined with keeping the old jellybean/rabbitear style pattern despite it being a bit of a liability due to its lack of macropatterning and poor micropatterning. I mean don't get me wrong, I like the old bunny ears, but its a WWII dated camouflage, and they don't still use anything else in the military that's that damn antiquated... Back on topic though, personal feelings about the camouflage aside, if this is going to be used in Afghanistan are the AAW mod planning on doing a version of the infantry with it at some point? :)

ARMA 2 (OA) : DLC discussion thread

This thread has managed very successfully to re-hash the same 5 pages or so of circular argument about 6 times by now. Points established firmly at least 10 times by various people. * DLC introduces the possibility of further division within the already fractured multiplayer community of Arma2/OA * DLC will alienate some members of the community who will refuse to buy it through either philosophical objection to the concept of an additional post-payment for additional game content, or objection to the means of sale (online only and requiring credit card) * DLC does provide Bohemia the scope to provide additional toys that they would otherwise have been unable to financially justify providing the community for free. * Paid for DLC is a divisive issue because money is a divisive issue (most relationships collapse due to money related issues, i see no reason why a customer-vendor relationship should be different). Many people see additional factions and particularly additional BIS made maps to be worth money, some do not. * DLC may place additional pressure on the modding community, threatening to squeeze out some mods with the potential that what they could spend months trying to get running, BIS may release in paid-for format. * BIS is not a massive developer so paid for DLC does provide them additional revenue streams which may allow them to further improve on the game engine. In between much of these points seems to have been about 10 pages worth of people sledging the shit out of one another for not posessing their opinion. Pointless bashing of someone because they either think that; a) DLC is a good thing OR b) DLC is a bad thing Does not achieve anything except fostering the somewhat FOX news(ish) impression that there is a community tearing itself violently in two. If people would cease being so damn inflammatory and actually attempt to defy the standard law of the internet and discuss this in a manner not resembling two monkeys fighting over a banana; consequently that if this thread didn't resemble the results of directing a sewer pipe into the world's largest fan, BIS would actually stand to learn something about the community's general opinion on DLC from it. Who knows, we could then end up with DLC that was priced reasonably and gave the community what they want, thus mitigating a good 3/4's of the arguments which have occupied the last 30 pages. Anyhow. That was long. Seriously though gentlemen... this is the war forum, no fighting on the war forum. ;)

ARMA 2 (OA) : DLC discussion thread

Congratulations, this was the 10,000,000,000,000th massive generalisation on the internet!!! I'm sure you win a youtube video of a bouncing kitty or something... ;) Honestly, I think QG was the only BIS product I bought, and went 'meh'. As far as I recall the only time that was useful for me personally was as additional fodder for the modding community, who managed to use the units and so forth to make some excellent content. I would personally expect a higher standard from BIS DLC in the future. I'm used to the attempts of other game companies (looking at Bethesda and TES: Oblivion here) to nickel and dime users with pathetic DLC which has no value relative to the price placed on it. If a whole game costs 50 dollars, why is a horse suddenly worth 5? So when compared to the cost and content contained in the original game, the DLC content should be comparatively/equally priced or it's just gouging the community. That said, if the British DLC includes some serious content and is reasonably priced I would pay for it. This goes against my usual principle which is to wait until the 'Gold' edition of a game is out and just buy it with all the DLC included, and the only reason I'd do that is because its Bohemia Interactive, and I do want (despite my abject distaste for the whole DLC thing) to support them. Mind you Bohemia, lets get this straight, if we all buy this DLC we do expect the money to be pumped straight into some serious re-coding of the engine for Arma 3.. right? But you can buy a couple of treats for yourselves, just no gold-plated rolls royce... ;)
  23. Seriously nice video, wish there'd been a bit more of the blatant vehicle porn and unit porn that was in the Alliance deployment trailer, but the explosions made up for it. ;) Wish it had been the Brits though, I'm really hoping they end up being one of the reveals that BIS does between now and the release date... Crossing my fingers and toes for them to be in the main release, I don't want to have to wait for them! :D
  24. Hah the T72, this is going to be another Sahrani style cakewalk for the heavy armour... *prepares for 10 years of insurgency followed by humiliating withdrawl...* Bring on the asymmetric warfare... ;)
  25. Funny that! I've been hoarding my annual leave to mysteriously take a few days off around the 29th of this month. ;)
