acadiancrusader replied to dracflamloc's topic in ARMA 2 & OA - ADDONS & MODS: COMPLETE
quick question, can this be used with the Steam version? edit: i just tried it out with the arma2 demo (don't have the retail copy yet). i used the -no splash parameter to test it out. yup, it seems to work. -
i support this 100% :D

"Beginner's guide to ArmA Modding" Project
acadiancrusader replied to a topic in ARMA 2 & OA - ADDONS & MODS: DISCUSSION
thank you all for the initiative on this project. back when arma1 first came out, i made a post asking the community how i could get started. i was basically pointed to a few resources, where the majority of the stuff was OFP-centric. the far majority of the stuff was also presented for those that had some previous knowledge. after blindingly going from tuts to tuts, i gave up. i found that i had spent 75% of my time searching instead of learning. not newb friendly. if i may offer some perspective, use the general website rule: the 3 click rule - which basically states that any person should easily find what they are looking for in three or less clicks. if you guys can take a similar approach to this massive project, i think you will be far more successful. again, i personally thank you all for attempting this... -
Cheeba, BI has done everything that is needed with this 'issue'. they implemented two things for the user... the difficulty and the ability to mod the engine. if there's something you feel is missing with the vanilla game, then perhaps an addon/mod is what you are looking for. learn to mod or find somebody who could build what you are looking for. with so many new players to this franchise, we are seeing more and more people who simply do not know what this game is about... it's not some polished closed ended game, it's a sandbox pseudo-simulator. it's up to the user to be creative and assertive if they want a specific gameplay/look. it's up to the community to create the content. it's BI's job to make the game stable. and they do a pretty damn good job at it. their track record with OFP and ArmA1 patches is proof.

Ideas for Teamwork friendly maps

well, if CoC gets ported over from arma1 to arma2, refined to make it easier to use, then i predict that most of these issues will be resolved. -

zero customer support. securom crap. can't get QG unless you buy the so-called 'gold' edition (still completely unavailable via steam). speaking of steam, 1.14 is STILL not available. wtf?!?! well BI, i hope you learned your lesson. for the sake of your north-american customers, never deal with them again. they publish your product, take a good cut of the profits and do absolutely nothing for the customer. nothing at all. if you are going to sell the game, or any future games in NA, please deal directly with steam. when i was younger, i had no issues with troubleshooting hours upon hours to get my games to function. well, i'm older, and i have far too many responsibilities in my life to do this. when i buy a game, especially when i buy it twice, i expect to have it relatively functional. and when it's not, i expect the solutions to be very simple. and since that is not the case here, i won't be playing. and that makes me very unhappy. heck, i even bought a trackIR just so i could enjoy this game even more. i guess i'll have to do what most grownups do here, play some lazy and mildly entertaining mmo to just to remotely satisfy my pixelated desires.

the whole point of this thread is to state that atari is offering arma on steam, but they are not offering QG or updating the patches on it. that is why atari is killing BI. i'm not talking about boxed retail products on store shelves.
-
gogamer is out of stock amazon.ca doesn't even carry it (there is no way i'm paying additional fees to have it ordered from the US) the simple fact is that Atari is screwing over it's customers because they don't reply to anything, they don't update their products that they make available on steam, and they don't offer the expansion (which makes no sense as there is no overhead to produce the expansion on steam) King-Six, there is no need to be a jerk. the fact is, when someone buys a product that has a updating service attached to it, you expect that service to function. and as far as manually updating the steam version, doesn't work for everybody. some people even report that steam is re-downloading/re-installing the old version as the new one is not supported. BI, i know technically this is not your problem. but in a sense, it is. the company that you made a deal with is misrepresenting you and your products. they are making you look bad. i hope that you guys are in contact with them on this. it's ridiculous.

i don't use credit cards and sprokets wouldn't accept my paypal. and again, since i bought it on steam, i fully expect that the version that i freekin' paid for would be supported (both patch updates and expansions)
-
just so you know, when i'm talking about steam... it's all atari. atari is responsible for the game on steam. steam works beautifully, but atari is completely ignoring it. they don't even issue ANY statements in their own forums.

BATTLE OF ORTEGO by Mr-Murray [SP]
acadiancrusader replied to Mr-Murray's topic in ARMA - USER MISSIONS
ya know, not everybody can get QG. i've posted about it multiple times. so until it's easy to get (i have no issues paying for it), there is no way anybody can consider it a must have ala resistance. in no way am i slagging you mr.murray. congrats on the release of a mission that obviously is first class. -
sgtrock, i think you were referring to what i previously posted. without double checking, maybe i mis-worded my intent. some addon makers are using the same KEY to sign multiple addons, thus creating different files. the server has one file that can potentially check multiple addons instead of equal number of files for server and client on the surface, this is seems pratical and easier to maintain for both the addon maker and the server admin. the creator only needs one key to sign all his/her individual addons. and the server admin only needs to have one file that can check for multiple addons instead of one file for one addon. but the problem with this is that the addon maker could develop the greatest multiplayer pvp addon in existence (thus potentially becoming a community standard) AND the same addon maker could have created a useful single player addon, but when used online, it's functions could be seen as cheating, or worse, crash the server. the problem here is that both addons could be signed with the same key. and if that happens, there would be no way to allow one addon and disallow the other. the only way to do this is for the server admin to create their own key and to sign the individual addons that they deem worthy. and this brings us back to a dis-unified community. with so many different signitures, the client could literally have to maintain dozens upon dozens of signed files for one single addon. kinda pointless if you ask me. so this is why we need a community standard. a sort-of governing body that dictates which addons are good and which are bad... and to police it so that the examples that i gave above don't happen. this will be no easy task. to make it easier is the reason why we are discussing a potential third party app to do all the legwork for the client. ideally, BI would implement something like this in their game. probably best if it was in the server browser. but there could be multiple ways of making this happen.

Add On Compilation for more Realism and Immersion
acadiancrusader replied to the.d's topic in ARMA - ADDONS & MODS: COMPLETE
i would prefer to go full out with ecs mostly because of the fantastic AI features. if i understand correctly, the edited version that you recommend is only for cosmetic reasons (extra voice/audio immersion). and what are the specific conflicts that you speak of? because, if i can get rid of conflicting add-ons that i personally do not see all that important to enhancing my overall gaming experience (i personally put AI near the top), i would gladly sacrifice those addons for the full ecs. -

Don't know about that problem  Maybe I'll make an optional version without QG too. Should not be that difficult.  would be very appreciated. thank you -
Add On Compilation for more Realism and Immersion
acadiancrusader replied to the.d's topic in ARMA - ADDONS & MODS: COMPLETE
The.D, why don't you sign (with permission of course) all the recommended add-ons within your thread? i see alot of servers doing this, but isn't the whole point of this thread is to create some form of multiplayer/realism standard? there is no standard if there are a dozen unofficial keys out there for a single unsigned add-on. at least this way, people will have a some-what, semi-official key. ps- this thread is so freeking huge as well as the ECS thread... i can't remember why you went with the hacked version of ECS. what was it specifically that was conflicting? -
I would be against this. Getting redirected to a web page is not something I expect to happen when trying to connect to a server. I would prefer if a server admin could define a custom in-game pop-up message that appears if a user cannot join. That way any info can be provided directly in-game. Of course you should be able to provide a link in that pop-up, so players can choose to go directly to the website, but it should not be mandatory. Perhaps we should try lobbying BI for this kind of functionality. rather then an engine function, couldn't something like this be created/added to a mission. like some kind of standardized script that won't allow a user to continue playing unless they follow the directions on screen and/or follow a clickable link... just thinking out loud here....

Mapfact "Operation Snakebite - Rescue Operation"
acadiancrusader replied to chneemann's topic in ARMA - USER MISSIONS
I'm sorry you had to wait 4 month for the SP version. But unfortunately I broke my wrist and spend some time at the hospital. @Burns: I think QG is a standard addon and worth the money. many may consider it a standard retail add-on, but not everybody can purchase it. not everybody has a credit card or paypal, and some, like myself only get errors when attempting to purchase it. ontop of that, it's not yet available via steam (which i now use instead of my retail copy of arma). so until atari makes it available as a seperate retail copy in north-america (can't buy it anywhere in BC, Canada) or makes it available via steam, and if sprokets can fix their system... i don't see how anybody can consider this as an add-on that everybody should have when there are obvious obstacles that hinder many of us from purchasing it. -
here's something to consider... the average person will not download something unless they absolutely have to. and this logic goes with yoma's current tool. now, if somehow this was possible... to connect to a server, one MUST have the tool installed and running. this way, this forces a standard in the community to install ONE thing, which is the proposed addon synching tool. once you have that in place, half the battle is won. now, as far as collecting a group of signitures... it wouldn't be that difficult. just have a post where people can suggest or recommend signitures. let the public debate within that thread to see if the signiture is linked to respectable add-ons. this brings up another issue. some add-on developers make multiple add-ons that use the same signature. what if one add-on is perfect for online multiplayer gameplay but another is basically a disastrous game-breaker? i guess in this case, the commitee would have to recommend to the add-on developer to make another key... the absolute biggest problem with a committee and a central database for acceptable keys is that the community would have to keep up to date if anything new is created that is not acceptable for online gaming and is linked with an already acceptable key.
