Military SciFi Projects Thread
mach2infinity replied to Zedrein's topic in ARMA 2 & OA - ADDONS & MODS: DISCUSSION
There's no need to be like that. I don't think my post warranted that sort of response. I merely questioned why someone adding to an old thread was a bad thing. I'll admit I haven't added anything in regards to content disucssion thus far, but I've only just re-joined the forum after a long absence. I would've thought the "addon request" thread pertains to those that make a request for specific addons, rather than ones making a general query about the latest sci-fi addons. I'm thinking about getting my mod off the ground. I have no idea how far I can take it. It depends how quickly I can master such tools as Oxygen, and whether I'm any good at designing the various units. Although I'm cognisant that ArmA 3 will be out soon, so perhaps I ought to hold off. I'm toying with the idea of tying Battle:LA and Battleship into a single continuity. Some might think they're shit franchises, but I think the 'title mix' could be interesting. Plus the latter opens up naval warfare as a possible addition, which is fine. If I can get my head around the tools, I would very much like to start with the basic 'BLAA' infantry unit. Then after that, perhaps the drone unit (wedge ship). I'd love to explore the possibility of combining multiple wedge ships into their saucer formation for maximum firepower. One of the key objectives in my mod is water, the aliens want it, we want to deny it to them. So that adds an interesting strategic element to the mod. Anyway, I'll see how it goes. -
Military SciFi Projects Thread
mach2infinity replied to Zedrein's topic in ARMA 2 & OA - ADDONS & MODS: DISCUSSION
Nothing wrong with "digging up an old thread" I thought it was encouraged to use the search function rather than double-post a topic. Any exciting sci-fi addons/mods being worked on? -
World Invasion W.I.P.
mach2infinity replied to mach2infinity's topic in ARMA 2 & OA - ADDONS & MODS: DISCUSSION
I've taken a long hiatus with no further work. However, the idea of re-visiting this project has creeped up on me again and I'm considering giving it another go. If I can crack Oxygen and create some basic models....then who knows? If anyone's interested, please P.M me and we'll see what we can thrash out (a world invasion hopefully!) As a late addition. I'm tempted to tie in the forthcoming "Battleship" (stop sniggering) film with the "Battle:..." series. Let me know what you think. [TG] -
World Invasion W.I.P.
mach2infinity replied to mach2infinity's topic in ARMA 2 & OA - ADDONS & MODS: DISCUSSION
It's been a good few months since I was here last. I have to be honest. I just found the whole notion of doing such a large project on my own a bit too daunting. It's just learning how to use Oxygen and everything else. I haven't even played the game in a long while. If anyone with any expertise in regards to modelling, coding and general mod making has an interest in pursuing such a venture. Then please get in touch. Regards, [TG]. -
IceBreakr, given the recent improvements in infrastructure and flora; does the Afrenian government expect a lot more 'visitors'? ;)

I think we can all agree... optimization

I know, I'm sure many people spat out their coffee (*insert other beverage if different*) after reading it. -
Am I the only one who disliked the futuristic approach?
mach2infinity replied to ray243's topic in ARMA 3 - GENERAL
Sure :) But for me the reason why the fantastical mods and addons work so well is because they're set against a realistic backdrop. I think that contrast just shows the versatility and scope of the game's potential. Regardless against whom you fight, it's still awesome when you get to fire a anti-tank launcher or a projected beam weapon. As Dcal put it to me once, "I can't wait to introduce one of those things (Zetaborn) to the business end of a SMAW" :D It seems that some of the units to be used in the next game may be of a speculative nature, so there's more of a fictional element to it and maybe a further detachment from reality. I know it's a game and it's not real but it's nice to have that versimillitude. Nonetheless, as long as the game's netcode is more efficient than the last one and it won't require a major system upgrade then fine. -
ArmA 2 Game Launcher
mach2infinity replied to SpiritedMachine's topic in ARMA 2 & OA : Community Made Utilities
For me, it's simply the most efficient and intuitive launcher I've ever used. The mod folder organiser is fantastic. The fact you can launch "ArmA 2" and "Operation Arrowhead" separately or "Combined Operations" makes things very handy. In addition you have a server browser which is quite useful. -
I'm not versed in how it's done but I've read that some people have put their game onto a 'ramdisk'/ramdrive; if it's something you wish to explore. I think it's worth for you to consider a SSD. They are expensive but at least with them you don't get drive fragmentation, so you needn't bother with a defrag at least. Link
-
Do you have "Operation Arrowhead"/"Reinforcements"too? A SSD/Ramdisk helps performance as well. I use a SSD but there are some who've used a Ramdisk configuration for the game.

mach2infinity replied to ray243's topic in ARMA 3 - GENERAL
No-one's whinging, they're just voicing their concerns. The futuristic setting may very well work. I just think there's certain caveats that they ought to be aware of. Perfectly reasonable. One has to ask why else would you bother with the ArmA games if realism wasn't a priority? The immersive experience of the ArmA games is what does it for me. -
OA 1.59 - Frequent CTD - NVIDIA nvlddmkm error
mach2infinity replied to OMAC's topic in ARMA 2 & OA - TROUBLESHOOTING
I experienced an issue with the Nvidia drivers ceasing to function a while back. I think it turned out the driver would time-out. Try this method: Handling "nvlddmkm.sys" Crash The instances it would crash dramatically reduced for me. -
Interestingly, on the matter of overclocking. There's an article in the latest issue of Custom PC (#094) about pitting a Gulftown (Core i7-990X) against a Sandy Bridge (Corei7-2600K) architecture processor. They overclocked the Gulftown to 5.05GHz and the Sandy Bridge to 5.3GHz. They had to use water cooling as you can imagine. Anyway, when it came to the test, the Gulftown had a minimum of 92FPS and the Sandy Bridge 99FPs. This was done at 1,920x1,080 resolution with Normal AA in "Operation Arrowhead".

I'm not excited by the propsect of the game using a futuristic setting with its assorted weapons and so forth. Because even though the locales in the ArmA series thus far have been set in fictional settings, the weapons, kit, military services etc is what grounded the game in a modern reality and made it feel as if it could conceivably happen elsewhere. If they make things too futuristic or fantastical then there is a danger they'll peel away a layer of reality or the versimilitude of it from the game. So in a sense you're left feeling a little detached as if you're playing a game like "Frontline: Fuel of War" or even "Homefront". It's highly unlikely that Europe or America would be attacked because of the energy markets. We live in a globalised world where everyone trades with each other in one sector or industry and this conceit that we'll be invaded doesn't make sense to me. I think an African setting would've been interesting because it's where I see the next flashpoints being. I'm tired of the middle east setting and I in fact prefer somewhere like Chernarus because it's more familiar and warfare conducted over woodland terrain is much more interesting than one fought over some god forsaken and uninteresting desert. In Africa, particularly the central states such as the Congo, Chad, Rwanda and the Central African Republic. These latter countries are ones that have major problems and will continue to do so for a long time. There's one humanitarian crisis after another and quite often, these locations are rich in natural resources too. China has a major stake in countries such as Sudan due to oil contracts, mining, technical advisers and so forth. Makes sense to me. :) -
That can be arranged. ;) (notice the splash of alien claret) If I can get my "World Invasion - Battle:.." series off the ground, then we'll see some unearthly antagonists entering the fray.
-
You were bold to play "ArmA 2" on a laptop, how did it handle?
-
The GF260 is a pretty low-end card by today's standards though? I haven't read anything about ATI's latest offering but Nvidia's 590GTX apparently has been fairly impressive with "ArmA 2". Here's the thing, they ask for a minimum of 2GB of RAM but that's not to say the game's engine will not be able to utilise 4GB of RAM or more.
-
Dale, I wish my processor was overclocked at 4GHz! I was actually referring to the taxing nature on hardware; specifically processors that the ArmA games have had. So far, when B.I have released an ArmA game, you'll have a number of performance issues because a) the game's netcode or whatever isn't properly optimised with the current hardware and b) the game's engine does not make full use of multicore CPUs, greater than 3GB of memory and sli/crossfire rendering that it should do.

There you go, fixed for you. ;)

Arma 2 Addon request thread
mach2infinity replied to Placebo's topic in ARMA 2 & OA - ADDONS & MODS: DISCUSSION
I'll be pedantic here. The only location that would make sense for the 'Green Sea' to be would be the Caspian Sea. It's classified as the world's largest lake by some and a sea by others. So strictly speaking it's both a sea and a lake. The only problem there is the U.S Navy managed to operate the USS Khe Sanh from the Green Sea. So a precedent has already been set by B.I. Perhaps one of IceBreakr's motherships dropped it there. ;) It's a lake, no a sea, no pond...no hang on a paddling pool; oh forget it! I didn't imagine my reply would attract such attention on the topic. Thanks guys, top class entertainment as usual. :D Back on-topic: A very good point Warden. They're not going to have a big budget and unless I'm mistaken. Chernarus is a recovering country which cannot dedicate massive amounts of funds towards military spending. Even though defence of course is a very important matter. I think ex-soviet gear makes the most sense. In regards to coastal defence. I like the idea of fast-attack vessels, such as a fast-attack patrol boat. Perhaps something similar to this hydrofoil design by the Americans (now defunct): Pegasus-class hydrofoil Even though we're looking at a brown-water navy, the PHM-1 boat is classed as a green-water navy vessel. So potential perhaps for regional power projection? In fact there's a guy here that was working on it: Punkrocker's PHM1 Pegasus Class HydroFoils Alternatively, there's an "ArmA" addon that is listed as being compatible with "ArmA 2"/"OA": List of Compatable Addons from Arma 1 It's an addon originally made by [APS]Gnat. Download it from Armaholic here: Sparviero - Fast Attack Hydrofoil -

That's not accurate mate, see here: You'll note the Green Sea is there. I do agree that the CDF should get some kit upgrade. Maybe assault rifles or anti-tank weapons? To stay on-topic. It's interesting to note that we've only seen a rather small region of Chernarus (South Zagoria). I would love to see the south-western part of Chernarus with the capital Novigrad. Time for it to be made. I don't see why B.I can't work on it. Additionally, I could make use for it in my mod as it the south and western regions have a number of rivers there. Perfect for water grabbing aliens. -

PuFu: regardless to whom you were addressing, if someone says they don't use a particular modelling programme; in particular someone with your experience. It's perfectly valid to enquire why. So that I know I'm starting with the platform best suited for someone of my level. I know the software of choice is up to me but I like to make an informed decision before I begin a big venture. RKSL-Rock: I've already drawn a conclusion, the Typhoon was a superb piece of work. ;) By extension that praises stretches to O². However, given what you said about finding a "good 3D package" for organic models. As I want to create the infantry soldiers from the "Battle: LA" film. I take it the caveat from what you've said is that O² may not be sufficient to create such models? I'm not going to be overly concerned with it right now as I haven't even started yet. Who knows how I'll get on, but I like to be aware of potential issues before they may arise. There's some really good advice here for beginners, in amongst the disagreements. I'll stick with B.I Tools 2 and particularly O². As it's what most people have started on and as it's suited for beginners, it would be the prudent choice. I like the idea of experimenting with various platforms and the thought of trying other programmes such as 3D Studio Max and Modo later on appeals to me. -

Thanks mate. Your campaign sounds superb! I envisage moments of great tension in it. I'd like to join you on a co-op session sometime! Introduce the Zetaborn visitors to a high explosive welcome. :D I've updated my original post. I've included a section about the naval mines the aliens use. -
