    FP : DR - News & Discussion

Seriously, boomar., did you even play OFP? DR looks nothing like OFP. It looks like Battlefield 2! Seriously! The animations are almost identical, it's scary. And the UI is very similar. If you didn't know the significance behind the "Operation Flashpoint" title, then you would probably write off DR as your every-day generic shooter if you saw those videos and screenshots. How it plays, however, is a different subject. One that we will only find out as time progresses.
  2. It's certainly the ultimate military simulator out of all games available to the public out there at the moment. Well, ArmA is at the moment, but ArmA II, and possibly DR too, will be when it/they is/are released. Unless you want to fork over the extra few thousand Dollars for VBS 2, vilas, you're not going to get anything better for your money than ArmA II. You're far too obsessive over the tiniest of details. If you notice one - fix it yourself. No one is stopping you. You, of all people, should know how to do that.

Dude... It's a completely different... Eugh. I take it you didn't try ArmA at all and wrote it off as a shitty game? I always found that to be a cool part of OFP and ArmA. The civilians made it a much more "personal" conflict in some cases, and a much more problematic one. Multiple good missions heavily involved civilians, just look at Abandoned Armies for OFP. To omit them makes me think of it as any other game out there, like CoD WaW. Yes.

    New beta patch 1.16

What I don't get is why didn't more... well... modular mods, namely ECS, become as popular online as ACE? Or well-designed mods, such as FDF and CSLA 3? I love all 3 of those mods, but it seems as if people have never heard of them. Interesting though, why does ACE cause texture blurring in 1.16b? Isn't that a hardware related issue? I can't see how a mod could cause that to happen to something that was already there.

    New beta patch 1.16

It is dividing the MP community. It seems that most servers now use ACE all the time, and the few that don't are always playing Evolution and what-not. Missions that have already been played to death. Now, I have a very good PC, but ACE does shit to it in terms of performance and compatibility, plus it has a never-ending stream of bugs. Safe-to-say, I don't use it. That means that I barely play MP at all anymore because the only server that doesn't seem to use it is the IC:ArmA one, and we only have one guaranteed game on it every Saturday. However, I do not believe that beta patches are dividing the community. BIS' beta patches are very different to what most other developers call "beta patches" in the sense that they've all been good enough to have been considered final patches. Simply seeing the word "beta" seems to throw a lot of people off, which I don't understand. If they tried it, they would understand that it's no where near the same.

    New beta patch 1.16

You do know he's a tech admin at IC:ArmA? Where we have upwards of 100 players playing non-stop for 3 hours at a time?
  7. I don't think I will be now. So far, their review is the only totally negative one. Obviously biased journalism.
  8. With a machine like the one Tiscali posted, ArmA II should run quite well. I think that they deliberately turned down the settings in order to make it look bad. That PC should be able to handle more than they had it at. Very unprofessional. But if that's not the case then I am concerned. I've got a GTX 280 and an E8400 @ 3GHz and if ArmA II doesn't run well on that I will be very sad.

    New beta patch 1.16

Man, some people are never pleased. And it's generally the same people too. The "cloned" OPFOR Rifleman bug remains from v1.15b. Really annoying for mission makers as using the cloned one adds the beta patches as a required addon to the mission.sqm. None-the-less, great patch BIS. Thank you for your continuing support.

    Arma 2 music rocks

You guys do realize that this music has been in ArmA since Queen's Gambit? Apart from the Russian faction video, that song is from OFP: Elite. You'll also hear it when you install ArmA. BIS just recycled them for the trailers, which was disappointing to me. Apart from the ones that used music from OFP, which was the polar opposite.
  11. Yes, I do believe it will. I run ArmA at full settings at 1440x900 resolution with 2km VD at the moment and I get between 30 and 120 FPS. And I have yet to see any bad graphics apart from Tiscali's preview. But you should not be basing ArmA II off of graphics. I'm surprised that people do, but I guess that's how major gaming corporations rope in their customers... Edit: Sorry Placebo, just saw your post.
  12. My apologies, heh. I didn't see that originally. Anyways, that's 1% more than the score that OFP: Game of the Year got from PC Gamer US. Now doesn't that sound like BIS are doing it right? Edit: Damn you Raphier. :butbut:
  13. You're a very pessimistic person, aren't you? It's obvious those videos don't showcase ArmA II how it's supposed to be. There definitely should not be that much slowdown if they're playing it on a decent rig, hence why all other trailers look fine in terms of framerate. Plus, that website gave it a score of 81%, which is fairly higher than what big magazines like PC Gamer US (72%, if I recall correctly) gave ArmA. So obviously, BIS must be doing something right.
  14. They don't seem to be running ArmA II on a PC anywhere near what they put as the "Optimum" configuration at the bottom of the page. Hence the obvious lag.

    FP : DR - News & Discussion

Yes, I do need more. Everything that you posted there, Ptolemaios, apart from the soldiers and view distance, is graphics related. Even if DR had good graphics, to me, a long-time OFP/ArmA fan, graphics do not make a good game. OFP taught me that. I do not agree with the statement that ArmA II looks better than Crysis, and neither do I think it has to. DR toting it's graphics is actually alienating me as the footage shown so far of actual gameplay is sparse and hardly impressive. And by the way, 35km view distance is possible in ArmA. Place a trigger with "setViewDistance 35000" and when it's activated, you'll be at 35km view distance. Though the game's obviously not optimized for it.
  16. Seconded. This isn't the right way to go about doing it. Request the maker's addon to be pulled from hosting/posts. I'm pretty certain all of the community websites will react immediately to that request, no questions asked, if sufficient proof is provided to show that the maker stole an addon.
  17. Awesome work, mate! I remember you talking about this and it's been a while since, but I'm ecstatic to see that you've finished and released it! Downloading now. Can't wait to try it out! And be sure to tell betsalel that the logo he made is kickass, and I'm impressed that he wrote the whole readme for you. That's some very impressive stuff. :D
  18. Indeed. They actually removed ALL of my ArmA videos on there without giving me any way to access them. The irony is I uploaded them before that rule was put into place. The fact I don't use Vimeo anymore speaks for itself.
  19. http://www.armaholic.com/datas/users/4-tiscali_games_preview_april_8.jpg From the Tiscali preview.
  20. If I recall correctly there is an option in the video settings to control the size of the UI, so I would definitely set them to lowest. All in all I'm actually impressed, I don't see a huge difference from the ones that they made and the ones that BIS made. We also don't know if they were taken on the same settings. Personally, I think it looks great. :D
  21. This has turned almost into the release of ArmA. People saw the screenshots, the videos, the updates, and were like "Wow, that looks amazing! It's definitely going to be a great game and a great sequel to OFP!" Then the game was released and everyone got annoyed at the bugs and certain things that were not shown in the videos (and rightly so, they were pretty bad in v1.00). Instead, it's happening prematurely upon release of these videos. Everyone likes it in the short-term, but as they use it more and more, they find its flaws. I think this community is quite susceptible to hype.

    FP : DR - News & Discussion

I like reading his posts and how he talks about "we". It's almost as if there are two warring sides here! Oh, wait... But anyways, I don't agree with the complete removal of 3rd person from DR. Having the option to switch it on and off and quickly switch between the two at a press of a button was/is something I really liked/like in OFP and ArmA. To remove it, in my eyes, is another glaring hole outlining Codemasters' complete lack of understanding OFP. I guess it's because what the player sees in 1st person will not be the same thing they see their body doing in 3rd person, so they don't want to make it look weird (like in Oblivion/Fallout 3). To me, that's just being lazy. Who knows, maybe the player won't even have feet... Furthermore, having a multi-platforming release certainly isn't helping Codemasters in any way apart from more profit. So far the graphics look worse and there is no editor on consoles. Even OFP:E had an editor, and that was on the Xbox.
  23. I had the Czech version of ArmA when it was released and I must admit that I had those errors they show but only for a short period of time. I also had a fairly mid-range laptop at the time with a GeForce Go 7600 256mb, along with a Duo Centrino at 2GHz and it didn't bother me that much. It usually happened when first loading something in the editor or when you quickly moved from one side of Sahrani to the other. But it never stayed on screen for long periods at a time. I do think Tiscali are quite bias towards BIS. To me, it looks like they deliberately created situations to cause those errors rather than letting the game run and seeing one pop up randomly.
  24. Despite the usual bashing of ArmA's and OFP's control schemes I have never actually changed them drastically. They remain mostly the same and only took me about 2 minutes to change ever so slightly (mainly replacing Ctrl + key keybinds to double tapping the same key). I doubt ArmA II's control scheme will differ greatly from ArmA's.

    Hardware and settings for ArmA

I must admit I'm quite impressed with the performance of my GTX 280 in all of my games. I have a mate who has an ATI 4870 and I scored only slightly above him in 3DMark06, so I can see that there may not be much benefit to the 280. However, it still runs ArmA great and, hopefully, will run ArmA II good as well. Specs: Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 @ 3.00GHz nVIDIA GeForce GTX 280 1GB 2GB DDR2 RAM Windows XP Professional SP3 Settings: Full settings with 1440x900 resolution and 2000m view distance. Runs between 30 and 120 FPS (with vsync disabled).
