    ArmA2 - The Xbox 360 thread

Can someone please tell me when BIS' games stopped being simulators? It seems that ArmA II has started making people say that the games aren't actually simulators, whereas with OFP and ArmA before it, everyone considered them simulators. What exactly changed? They're still simulators you guys. They're not VBS2-level simulators, but they're still simulators. A "game" is something like MW2.

    Thinking of buying

Given that this forum is used by people of many nationalities, everyone should be typing in a clearly legible format for those who can't necessarily read that well, especially when text chat is used, leaving that to MSN or Facebook. But to answer the OP's question - do not buy second hand, you're more likely to activate FADE that way. Buying a new copy is much safer, and quite cheap at the moment.

Bioshock 2 joins the Anti-Dedicated-Servers Brigade

But they have been advertising its MP component quite a bit. I do agree Bioshock is SP-centric, but we expected them to have decent MP due to the promoting they've been doing it for. So, as a result, we expected them to put some effort into it. This announcement is telling us that they had more important things to do, and are not going to put in that much effort for it. I guess it will be your typical "slapped-on MP" then. A shame, to be honest.

Why is this game not more popular?

I play MW2, and I've been playing BIS' games since OFP's release. It's not wrong to like both. The game isn't more popular because most gamers have an extremely short attention span nowadays. If it's not plug and play, it's too complex for them. That's why consoles and games like MW2 are immensely popular. So, when your average gamer today is given ArmA II, he sees the bugs, the complexity, the realism, and hates it. It's just how it is. Thankfully, there are us... "Not so ordinary" gamers, who look at ArmA II, see the same stuff, and love it. :D

Even with that difficulty mod of yours, templar, they still miss an unreasonably large amount. Especially given that you're a static target with a huge profile. I did indeed like being reminded of how inaccurate they shoot, though. Also, notice how they all seemingly fire at the same time for the same intervals? Obviously programed to do that. Never noticed it before.

The scary thing is that people are still holding out... Codemasters are a disgrace to the gaming industry. I hope that no one buys them out and that they go bankrupt. Having this major "game saving" patch 2 on the way, that will rectify DR's issues and make it how it should have been, only to have it turn out to be yet another joke of a patch. I'd love to hear from those who continued to defend the game based on this next patch fixing it all.

Why is this game not more popular?

In some ways I wish this game was more popular, as that means more revenue and more attention for BIS. In most, however, I'm perfectly content with it being as popular as it is. We all have seen what happens with a community when the game is immensely popular. Somehow, most of the forum members start tlkin in txt cht and flame the crap out of each other because their favorite sports team lost a game.

    "Hardcore" and Apple's new tablet

I do see myself only being able to play products from BIS and Valve on the PC in the future. I'll be forced to play games on a console more, which I don't want, but I also don't want to be stuck without any games. It's a really, really sad possibility. Especially given the mediocrity most console titles have...
  9. Which is awesome in itself. :D But yes, ALICE is the Ambient Civilian Module.
  10. I do find that ArmA II's campaign has been useful in teaching me how to do many things I did not know how to do before, but that wasn't really through playing it, it was through opening it up myself and looking at the scripting and the mission itself in the editor. While I do think that ArmA II's campaign was good (and that ArmA's sucked, but we all know that), I do think that it still didn't live up to the excellence that BIS produced with their two campaigns for OFP; Cold War Crisis and Resistance. I've found that the way that ArmA II's campaign works has left much potential for things to go wrong, given their open ended nature and extreme amounts of heavy scripting to make missions dynamic. The word "scripted" here doesn't apply to Harvest Red as it does to other FPS games' campaign experience, but there is still a lot of complex scripting involved. Plus, you also have the performance issues which largely only exist when playing the campaign due to all the scripting going on, plus all that's going on in the mission as you play. I do like Harvest Red, but I think CWC and Res did a much better job at showing people what OFP was all about, than Harvest Red did at showing what ArmA II was all about. I would say that it's mostly useful for learning how to do FSMs or using the new conversation system. Therefore, I'm forced to vote for 2. Don't forget, however, that neither CWC nor Res worked perfectly this soon after release either. ;)

I figured I would add that it's exactly the mindset of the number of sales dictating how good of a game it is, is exactly what Codemasters hopes/hoped for. Far too many people think that because a game sells well it's incredible. An excellent example of this is DR, but another example could be MW2 (depending on what you think of it, I actually enjoy it quite a bit). And don't say that because I like MW2 it's similar to you liking DR, Templar. MW2 actually has thought put into it and a very high amount of polish and working game mechanics. Sure, I wouldn't say it's better than COD4, but it comes pretty damn close. DR compared to OFP on the other hand, they are on completely different sides of the spectrum.

People buying the game does not mean it's a good game. BIS has probably had a much greater success with ArmA II than they had with any of their previous games. It seems a lot more people bought it and liked it, and continue playing it. Especially after DR's release. DR recently arrived over here, in the Middle East. Many of my friends saw it as it was in the main Virgin Megastore of the country, and asked me what it was like. I told them I personally hated it, and that they should spend their money on ArmA II, which was sitting right next to it. A few of them bought both, and you know what? They love ArmA II and hate DR. I then filled them in on the story behind it, and their general response was "well, no wonder ArmA II is so much better". People might still be buying the game, which is unfortunate as CM don't deserve another penny, but they don't continue playing it. I bet there are many people who feel ripped off about DR and even more who have returned it. This week I checked the area where DR used to be, and all of the remaining copies were in the "Used" section. Says a lot. Those guys are all still playing ArmA II as well.

ArmA II runs at a constant FPS of above 40 FPS for me, and I don't have the most amazing rig ever. I have a GTX 280, Core 2 Duo E8440 3.00GHz, 2GB DDR2 RAM and Windows XP Professional SP3. I run at settings that are very close to full as well. I have no need to go to the extremes, like some do, to get even more performance. DR I can max out and get 100 FPS and above, but that is for obvious reasons...

    Zipper5's Missions

Definitely something going wrong on your side. No one so far has reported that error and I have yet to experience it myself. Perhaps it's the size of the mission and your PC can't handle it? It is a fairly large mission.

    Who designs these missions?!

The original operation order was to move to Sparta and shoot down the Su25s as they take off. Did you read the briefing at all? Also, it's not exactly hard. I recommend using manual fire and a combination of sidewinders and your cannon. Really easy stuff. In fact, that's the only easy part in the mission. And no, you engage them whenever you can. It's actually easier to destroy them when they're on the ground. 2 Sidewinders each will take them out. A quick forum search would have revealed that EW was not designed with the idea of realism being at the forefront. Instead, it was designed to be Hollywood-esque with great action and suspense. Still, it's not hard at all to shoot down the planes so long as you remain stationary. Also, if you were to try your hand at mission making you would see how hard it is to fill everyone's needs. Most, like myself, enjoyed EW and enjoyed Harvest Red (up until the Warfare missions, at least). Sure Harvest Red has bugs, but it's still fun to play. My guess is you're rushing into it without reading the briefings or following orders. If you did, then you would have known from the get-go that you have to shoot down the Su25s, not be surprised by it when you reached Sparta.
  17. Where do you live? If push comes to shove, buy it from Sprocket (which gives the most money back to BIS), or off of Steam. Don't trust Morphicon.

What controls are you guys using?

Gamepads are ok for vehicles, but stick to mouse and keyboard for everything else. Personally, I just use them for everything.

I think we have entered the stage in a game's death where random & previously unknown forum members are trying to step in and turn the game into the best game on the market, and by doing so gaining the respect and adoration of every person that follows them. Well, that's their thinking anyways. Codemasters couldn't care less about them anymore. They know how much they've scorned the DR community, and are going to move on to bigger and... well, not better... "things". People still seem to clutch to that glimmer of hope nonetheless...
  20. Petergames/Morphicon is not the European distributor. 505 Games is. That's the version you should have bought. Doesn't that mean that your game was always in German?

Wow, Polaris actually has a point. There is, after all, only 49 votes in that poll, and the majority think it still has a chance. That's because the only people still around to vote in said polls are people who are going to stick with the game even when Codemasters announce that they are cutting all ties to it and moving on to develop different games.
  22. Oooooook... That's just... I can't find a good word to describe it. Confusing?
  23. Man, I want this mod!
  24. I think that it is currently very good, though there's always room for improvement. Out of all of BIS' games, ArmA II easily has the best animations, mostly due to the fact BIS have separated the upper and the bottom half of the body to allow them to be animated separately, hence why reloading while moving is possible. Improvements are always welcomed, but don't make it on-the-spot swiveling with crappy animations like that "other game".

It is indeed unfortunate that is the case. Just take a look at the posters on the "other forum". CM keeps dropping these massive "we scammed you all" posts, and they seem to act like nothing's happened, or that what has happened is relatively minor. These are people who will be continuously suckered into things in life. Fool them once, and they'll let you fool them over, and over, and over, and over, and over...
