Shovel :) Dig yourself some quick cover! This i am sure is possible. When a plane crashes in Arma2 you get some kind of "Rubbled up ground" object that spawns on the ground. A resized object like this would be perfect to "dig a quick ditch". (The ditch would not need to be an actual ditch, just a small raising of sand you can hide behind) Would be grate for defensive missions.

I was pondering on including a separate "let it be set by server" option, but then again consider this: Different systems are never "fair": trackir is not an option set by server, nor is setting postprocessing to high. Someone playing on lower end system will never fully compete with someone playing on a top notch system. Someone with 3 monitors and some mega graphics setup will be able to see a lot more then someone playing on an old 1024*768 monitor, that's not fair. What are you going to do, enforce resolution? This is a problem one cannot solve, however it sucks balls if you oblige stuff to people they do not like or that even make them physically sick after an hour. Just check the results on the poll and you immediately see where the average demographic of this forum thinks the ball should be. "It must be the same for everyone in MP" is a bogus argument that makes no sense to me. That doesn't mean it isn't nice to have some parameters set serverside. This whole discussion is actually very important as i think BIS lost a lot of supporters by keeping their foot stiff in Arma. I also predict that if they do the same for Arma2 they'll loose out on even more players as the stuff they now implemented is even more intrusive.

ARMA 2 DE 1.01 (final) Impressions - Post ALL Impressions/Videos/Screenies Here

Let's just say it's a completely different game. At times the graphics look stunningly real, way better then anything else, at times it looks like ofp. Depending on the cpu/gpu load at that time. It probably will take some patches, but i think it looks better then Crysis sometimes. But that doesn't really matter much, the gameplay is off the chart compared to a semi-corridor shooter like Crysis. The landscape is uncomparable to anything out there. Sure Crysis has some nice vegetation, but it's all "Tropical" and that's a lot different from "European". The trees/bushes/grass are simply the best available today. In terms of AI, nothing comes close. But the whole thing has quite some bugs. So if you can live with waiting for a couple of patches, this is a great game, the best and the only in it's kind. It's a lot like wine, it gets better over the years :) I must admit i haven't even tried Farcry2, it's a bit of the same story between Arma2/Ofp2 Dragon Rising. I don't buy into "name based" sequals. Besides that, after OFP the only company that really got me going on a FPS is BIS. The other games are just so... shallow. -

Another great simple feature that was missing in Arma and that's back in Arma2: You can shoot tires and they deflate again! YAY, no more replace the tire texture with rusty texture. I've seen vehicles with deflated tires, but also vehicles with tire entirely gone. And it does have bugs, but the overall gameplay is great. -
Just set it equal to your resolution (Render_W=1680,Render_H=1050), it's a bug.
-
I think this poll is starting to show the users position on the issue. Getting rid of it completely is not needed, just make it an option BIS, your users will love you for it.
-
I wouldn't say it's crap. When it works it's sometimes very nice, but cpu/gpu time is better spent on other stuff. I rather have less textures popping in then bloom/blur all over the floor. The current implementation makes me not use my track ir in Arma2 and i think resorting to an addon to fix something this "basic" is silly.
-
Another strange thing i found is that if you put textures to high on a 8800GTX, i somehow get LESS texture lag then when putting it on low or normal. Kegetys mod enhances the overal experience a lot! I've put out a poll http://forums.bistudio.com/showthread.php?t=73991 so please vote to let the dev's know this is something a lot of their users really really want.

What does ARMA 2 have that Operation Flashpoint 2 doesn't?
Yoma replied to bloodbomb's topic in ARMA 2 & OA - GENERAL
That's unfair, this forum has a lot of "nasty" topics that don't get closed just for being nasty. It's not how this forum works in my opinion. Topics do get closed for being nasty for the sake of being nasty. Or for being duplicates or for going offtopic or for going agains forum rules. "You cannot say anything bad about our games" is not a forum rule at all as far as I've seen (for 8 years now). -
It could also be a problem with one of the object's model. Arma1 used to have it with the javelin launcher, but it got fixed in a patch. I also got it once, but restart of the game solved it.
-
I also have the "cannot go near main camp" bug. Also all the enemies near the camp are simply friends to my squad, untill i get out of my vehicle, then they shoot me... And if i try riding up the hill, there seems to be an instant killzone (rpg in vehicle, magic sniper bullet when running) This could be a great mission if it weren't for the bugs...

Anyone else noticed the better animations on starting/stopping of tanks? It's a minor thing but it makes the tanks feel so much more "alive" then in Arma1. A pity we didn't get interiors though. Keep up the great work BIS, you're making this game a true work of art!

That's very very true :)

What does ARMA 2 have that Operation Flashpoint 2 doesn't?
Yoma replied to bloodbomb's topic in ARMA 2 & OA - GENERAL
Let's just say that if you played the original OFP (BIS) and you really really liked it, you may dislike Dragon Rising (Codemasters). To me personally it's pretty simple: no other game comes close to the games BIS makes, including Arma2. OFP2 is commercially hyped, Arma2's approach is much more honest. What do you like best: -a great restaurant (yes you have to wait for your meal, but it's excellent, original taste and healthy) -or MCDonalds (instant meal, generic taste, but not healthy at all)? Other then that Dragon Rising is a black box, noone actually knows how it will really be and i'll be launching Arma2 after this post. The recent gameplay movies of OFP2 make it look real weak and not a "true sequel" to OFP at all. Arma2 has bugs, but i'm pretty sure the most important ones will get fixed soon. I haven't encountered any gamebreaking ones yet, but maybe i'm just lucky. BIS has a record of fixing up bugs in their games, Dragon Rising has no record at all. It will either be a vastly less complex and interesting game or they will surely have bugs too. -
I downloaded the German version, and installed v1.01. Looking in the Arma 2 folder, i found that it updated the Arma2.exe and did not work like in Arma with a "beta" folder. Is this only because it's one of the first patches or has BIS changed it's "beta" policy?
-
What i meant in my original post is that when you start driving a tank it first tilts backwards and when you stop it, it tilts forward. You have much more "suspension" feel to it then in Arma1, there it felt more like driving a rigid box then a tank. It's just a small detail, but i think it's very well implemented and wanted to pat BIS on the shoulders for it.

Would it be possible to log the results to arma.rpt? something like #start armamark# #test1:x# #test2:y# #test3:z# #test4:blabla# #end armamark# This way you could access the results from outside Arma. I'm toying around with an idea where this might come in handy.

I think as a community we need to get a bit smarter. Maybe we should try to make a tool that can load certain "proven" presets based on your system configuration. Don't know if it would be possible to make it though, it would need a lot of trusted user input to get it to a workable point.

I just use VMWare when i want to test something under Linux. Once 3dhardware gets decent virtualisation, i think the OS will matter less and less, as people will start using all sorts of OS's on the same PC. For instance i have win98,win2k,winxp, winxp64, debian,Ubuntu in vmwares that run on my VistaX64 pc. Great for testing, toying around and programming. Once 3dhardware gets the same level of virtualisation as pretty much all other hardware nowadays, there will be absolutely no stopping you from "launching windows" inside the main OS just to play a game. Of even better, launch my "virtual game console stripped of all other shit" yay application virtualisation - loading my game. My point is the more virtualisation kicks in, the freer you become of OS ties and the less relevant porting of applications becomes.
-
You probably have your graphics settings too high or play on a lower end pc.

Yaah mein Deutch skills arz becoming viel besser! Arma2 macht viel spass! I'm sorry i couldn't resist :) Ontopic: so far I like what I've seen. Allthough I'm not all for the motion blur thing... -
I haven't found any yet :) Anyway they most likely have more important issues to handle atm and probably someone will make it in addon form anyway.
-
It's often neccesary: vehicles get shot at and can spring fuel leaks. Had great times trying to fly my chopper back to base with fuel gauge visibly going low. Great sensation when you make it just in time!
-
-what is the gamespy master for arma2? (hoping its armedass2 :D) -what is the registry key for arma2 pointing to it's installation directory (the "main" registry key for arma1) I could use both for AddonSync2009, i'm still waiting for my Amazon.de copy to arrive
-
The nice thing is that it'll surely get better and better with patches. I consider ofp/arma/arma2 as something that's in constant motion, not a static "now it's done" thing as other games. That may be wrong for some, but makes perfect sence to me. However, i haven't had the chance to see it yet, and you have ;) Lucky you! Come on Taxipost, get here!
