  1. I'll throw my two cents in..

I dont think the awards to Halle or Denzel were even remotely racial in nature.

Though I have to say that Randy Neuman winning best song was..well..pity. It wasnt nearly as good a song as many of the others he's been nominated for, and Sting or Enya wrote far better songs.

I read a few Lord of the Rings forums, and heavens, are THOSE some people that need to get lives. FotR was a great movie, and probably my favourite film last year, but it's not everyone's cup of tea. And obviously the voting members of AMPAS prefered Beautiful Mind. As I like to say, judge the worth of a movie on how much it's watched and loved in ten years. I am willing to bet that in 10 years, no one will remember Beautiful Mind.

  2. Wow. Someone who admits to being scum..er cheating.

    </span><table border="0" align="center" width="95%" cellpadding="3" cellspacing="1"><tr><td>Quote </td></tr><tr><td id="QUOTE">U should try using wallhack and autoaim, damn it's amusing to shoot ppl through the wall on assault<span id='postcolor'>

I hope you try this and join a server that checks for cheats, and you get wonid banned.

I might sound like a prick, but I am so sick of lame ass jerks like you who think that cheating is something fun to do. Well, guess what... you're taking the fun away from everyone on that server who is there to have fun while playing fair. I've never once had the uirge to cheat. Why? Because I dont hae a pathetically weak ego that needs propping up by a high score. Sometimes I do good, and have a great score and enjoy it. Sometimes I am OWNED, and you know what? That's fun too, because I know that I am better than cheating scum.

  3. I've been reading We Were Soldiers Once... And Young, the book Randall Wallace adapted to make the movie of the similar name.

It's an interesting read. One of my favourite Vietnam era memoirs is 'Chickenhawk' by RObert Mason. So imagine my surprise to find that We Were Soldiers is the tale of the grunts that Mason ferried about the Ia Drang in Chickenhawk. He's even mentioned at one point in WWSOAY. Now I have to dig out the other one and looks for the correlations.

So if you want a really interesting look at the early stages of the Vietnam conflict, pick up these two books.

Now I can go see the movie. But before I do that, has anyone here seen it and care to venture an opinion?

  4. Just say something meaningful. Over at the Anandtech forums, they use a term called 'nef'ing. It's the endless 'me too' spamming people do to inflate their post counts.

Being a nef sucks. Trying to make the posts you make at least REMOTELY on topic and interesting is far more fun, and in the end gives you more respect than being a dumbass with 3000 posts.

Or am I just a grumpy old man today?? mad.gif

  5. Turned out it was timing. I was spending too much time helping the dudes at the other base. I waded in and killed the tanks as fast as I could, gunned down the at soldiers, and my tanks rolled in and mopped up. Mission finished.

    Thanks guys smile.gif

And the hind seems to be a pain to shoot down..

  6. Back to the topic at hand..

This guy should get a Darwin Award.  I mean, come on!  I am not an aircraft mechanic, but even I know that you should have lots of pins on big streamers running from the safeties on the seat... and I certainly wouldnt go to work on an ejection seat without all those pins in place!

    I can just imagine it...

'Make sure you dont accidentally pull this...'

    BANG FWOOOOOOOOSSSSHHHHHHHHHH THUMP

    biggrin.gif

  7. Infantry all the way!

I actually like commanding, AND infantry missions.  It's a challenge to complete a mission without losing anyone.  I always feel badly when I get someone killed, and strive to do better on the next missions.

I -hate- the helicopter missions.  Even with my joystick, I find the damn helicopter is a beast to fly.  Heck, I am a champ at Longbow Gold, but I can barely fly the dang thing in Flashpoint.

  8. All of the Soviet armour is down. There are a few stray Soldiers kicking around, but the M1's dont seem to be interested in finishing them off.

    What have I missed?

I keep landing and hopping out to off a few of them with my trusty carbine, but I keep getting shot because pilots are crappy shots! biggrin.gif

    Any help would be appreciated.

  9. ZOINKS!

Where is Ben Affleck and Bruce Willis when you need them?!? wink.gif

Scary stuff. And considering that hardly any money is spent on monitoring the skies, perhaps such a near miss will spur more investment in making sure it isnt a big rock that kills us, just each other. tounge.gif

  10. </span><table border="0" align="center" width="95%" cellpadding="3" cellspacing="1"><tr><td>Quote </td></tr><tr><td id="QUOTE">this would be one of those unrealistic aspects of the game<span id='postcolor'>

Though I am talking out of my hat and dont have a clue,  I suspect special operations folks would get at least rudimentary training in most battlefield systems.  In otherwords, you'd likely be able to operate enemy gear.

Though I -WAS- amazed at the speed with which I could reload the gun in a T-80.  There should be some slow down when you dont have a full crew.  And I surely did love blowing the base to kingdom come in the T-80 I stole... then blowing it up before finishing the mission. biggrin.gif

I should try it again as Mr Stealth and blow the tanks with charges like i am 'supposed' to.

Texas? Only two things come from Texas, queers and steers!  And I dont see any horns, so I guess that narrows it down a little.

    Gunnery Sergeant Hartman, FMJ

Actually, it's one of the best WAR movies, period.

Does anyone know where to find a region 1 encoded DVD of Full Metal Jacket in -=WIDESCREEN=-?

All I can find anywhere is the pan and scan version.  I havent seen the whole movie since the theater.

  13. LOL.

Hey wobble, HOW big is that picture? wink.gif

BTW...I liked the one of the Tandy 5000MC. I sold nearly 150k worth of the things to the Government of BC in 88. Until somebody convinced the agency to buy them all in one location. Screwed me out of a 10,000 dollar paycheck.

    AUGGGGHHHH!

  14. Placebo,

    There's an old addage..

Opinions are like as..er.. bottoms.  Everyone has one.

    Add to that

    And most of them stink.

It is human nature to form our opinions, and in most cases hang onto them for dear life, even when they are wrong.  Does that make it right? Not even remotely. But hey...that's human nature.

I am in no way slamming Avonlady.  I have a great deal of respect for anyone insane enough to have SEVEN children, let alone someone living in such a dangerous area of the world.

What does bother me is the knee jerk response that is often given whenever someone suggests Israel might not be lilly white.  You're branded an anti-semite and dismissed.  And THAT is as vast an error in logic as forming an opinion based on one source in the media is.

There are great wrongs being done by both sides.  But if I had to pick the side I think is 'wrong' it would be the Palestinians.  If they just STOPPED suicide bombings, and stepped back from protests, I suspect the Israeli Army would also stop their violent confrontations.  SOMEONE has to start, and at this point I dont think there is a lot Israel can do short of packing up and leaving (and we all know htat's not going to happen) that will stop the violence.  So the first step is in the hands of the Palestinians.  And that means no more sniping and no more suicide bombs.  Sadly I dont see that happening.

    Wow...dude...

    <<hands Redstorm some new glasses>> wink.gif

Flashpoint isnt perfect, but it's far more polished than those. The tank is rather comicbookish, and the terrain is just... flat.

And the textures are veryt remeniscent of Half Life.

  16. I love this sort of discussion. Lots of rating and raving and heated discourse.

So here goes with my two cents!

Avonlady (wow, imagine my embarassment when I looked at something other than your FAQ and I discovered you really are a lady and it's not just some guy trying to be clever!!wink.gif lives right in the middle of this whole mess.  And she gets to see on a daily basis the things many of us only see on the news.  And like it or not, she will view things from a particular slant.  After all...she likely knows someone who has been directly affected by palestinian terrorism.  And that is not likely to make her very amenable to people being appologists for the palestinian people.  After 9/11, I met a LOT of Americans who were clamoring for blood...and these were people who didn't know anyone directly affected by the WTC or Pentagon attacks.  It's easy to sit on our high horses when we dont have to worry about some zealot with a bomb doing harm to our families, and comment on what's happening in the middle east.

And on the other hand we have the fact that there HAVE been questionable actions taken by the goverment of Israel, both now and in the past.  I dont see anyone in Israel denying that pretty much any tied to the Black Septemberists was hunted down and killed by the Mossad.  Or that Mossad used forged Canadian (!!wink.gif passports to infiltrate agents into Lebanon.  And I am NOT being anti semitic when I say that there is no justification for that sort of thing. NONE.  There are things civilized people dont do.  And no matter how uncivilized your enemy is, lowering yourself to thier level is a very slippery slope, in a moral sense.

Comparing Mossad to the Gestapo is just wrong.  I am not a big fan of Mossad, but they are hardly as bad as that.  I think staging any comparison of an Israeli organization to a Nazi one is deeply wrong.  As violent as the situation is between the palestinians and israelis, it is nothing approaching the evil and depravity of Nazi Germany.

    Heh.

Some yahoo Canadian CF-18 pilot decided on a flight from CFB Comox to CFB Cold Lake to buzz his parents house in Vancouver.  As I remember, he stood it on it's tail and went ballistic. And broke the sound barrier. OOPS.

Seems he broke quite a few windows in his parents neighbourhood.  From what I heard he got a fair bit of trouble when he reached Cold Lake.

    biggrin.gif

  18. Yeah... BUT

The venerable Twin Huey has very low levels of ESD compared to the Griffin.  And the skids are also not rated for the weight required for fully loaded troops to stand on during insertions.  IE.. 4 fully armed troops on each skid exceeded the 414kg limit, and the helo became unstable. They (427 Squadron) managed a fix by adding a step on the fuselage that fixed it. I dont know if there is an upgraded skid assembly from Bell now or not.

I guess I am just railing against political expediency putting people in danger.  Especially the dedicated folks in the Canadian Forces.  Heaven knows they are already hobbled by a totally nasty budget.  Know what I mean?  confused.gif

  19. Shame about the ESD on those Griffin helicopters.

    Gotta love government boondoggles!

    ESD=Electrostatic Discharge

Basically, the rotor wash creates huge amonts of static electricity and unless the helo grounds, youcan be zapped on disembarking.

They eventually fixed it by adding 'wicks' that hang under the fuselage and ground the helicopter from a meter or so up, so troops can offload without the helo having to touch down during rapid deployment.

Just so employees at a helicopter plant in Quebec could have more work. Bleah.

edit: I need to proofread more biggrin.gif

  20. Yeap.

101st Airborne, if I am not mistaken.

One of these days I'll make a trip to his gravesite in Seattle and say a little prayer for such a musical genius lost.

edi: Damn, I shoulda read the second page before replying.

  21. I have to agree that Red Storm miled the R6 engine a little too far. And that the later packages were pretty much just more of the same.

But Raven Shiel is using the new Unreal engine, so I bet it will really really kick butt.

It'll be the first R6 game I've bought since Rogue Spear.

  22. If you are talking about the one right at the start of the game...you CANT save the lieutenant. He's dead before you get there, as far as I can tell.

I am still not sure how I finished the mission, but did so after the third try, even though I was wounded and had to crawl 100 meters to the dang truck.

Damn this is a great game. I'm trying to escape the iland now, and I keep getting picked off on my way to Morton...

  23. I am not an American.

Here's my take on this whole discussion...

Americans seem to be a little thin skinned. In general, the average American sees criticism of the USA as a personal attack. And this is rather silly.

I have a lot of American friends. And for the most part they are generous and wonderful people.

Sadly, the US government is not so wonderful at times. There is a long history of American (government) self interest being used as justification for propping up some truly evil people. Remember, Osama got his start with the CIA, and the US supplied arms to Saddam Hussein.

Sadly, the 'average' American is at heart an isolationist. I think this is why the average joe was so baffled with the inhumanity of the 9/11 attacks. While there is no justification for terrorism in the least, there ARE reasons the US was a target. And very little of it is to do with jealousy.

Wow, what a rant for my irst post on these boards. I just picked up OF and it's a wonderful game.
