Isn't that about the size of the Swedish Army?

    Infantry weapon of the century

    1. Kalashnikov type weaponry. This is the most prolifically produced weapon in the world. I think most soldiers will and have agreed with me here. 2. AR/Stoner type action. (i.e. M-16, M-4.....etc..etc..) 3. FN-FAL type weapons. 4. Garand type weapons. The Garand action is one of the safest ever invented. (i.e. M-1 Garand, M-14, M1A, M-21/25, Mini-14/30) 5. The Fragmentation Hand Grenade 6. Colt 1911 Pistol 7. Mauser Rifles 8. Moisin Nagant Rifles 9. Luger Pistol 10. M-2 Machine Gun The first four are in order of what I believe to be in order of abundance The last 6 are in no particular order but have seen substantial use in the last century. Take for instance the M-2. The U.S. military used to bolt one of those to practically everything until electricly powered rotary Vulcan type cannons became more prevalent for aircraft and the development of the M-60. I beleive Enfield rifles, HK 9X series rifles (could have surpassed the FAL but just didn't get as many contracts due to ease of manufacture, a great injustice because it's a better weapon series), and the Uzi deserve some recognition too. Edit: Ack!!! Huge oversight! The Mg-42. This revolutionized machine gun design and practically every modern MG has inherited something from it's design. The bane of the allied infantryman in WWII. Also worthy of mention.

    Gun control debate thread

Guns are guns who cares what kind they are? I can kill just as many people with my HK USP 40 as I can with an M240B (FN MAG for the Europeans), it will just take me longer to do it. People who want to get guns for bad things will get them regardless of legislation. Here in America much of the gun control legislation is knee-jerk and frivilous only causing an annoyance to those of us who enjoy collecting and shooting military type weaponry. I adhere to the 2nd Amendment in the most strict terms, I believe any legislation on what type of gun I can own is an infringement on that right, however, legislation regarding felons and gun ownership is different. They aren't limited to types of guns. They just can't own them period. This however is due to a loss of civil liberties because of a felony conviction regarding more than just gun ownership (i.e right to vote). Slick Willy, the high ogress attorney general, and our beloved and rabid Senator Feinstein D-CA sure had a hay day in the 90's concerning assault type weapons. Now I can't buy a fully authentic AR type rifle brand new but I bought a pre-ban FN-FAL with all the bells and whistles. If you ask me, this type of gun control legislation is the morphine of the sissy faction of our government. Something happens at a school or a restraunt etc etc..and wham 200 years of Constitutional Law is stiffled by a few months of Democrat (not all of them, just the extremists. Yes I admit I know many decent ones) whining. Guns are just tools (or art if you see them like I do). The person behind the gun is fundamentally the problem. We have a violence problem here in America and by the results of such legislation it seems like guns have very little to do with it. Take them away and Americans will just kill each other with switch blades and baseball bats.

    Nasa hasn't changed one bit

Indeed you are correct, my mistake. That projection is an old one given that Pathfinder made the trip in under a year. Also given that the vehicle is enroute when Mars is in opposition (closest to the Earth). I did a little reading on Ion propulsion and it looks like over time the speed of the mass being propelled would eventually become nearly equal to the speed of the exhaust which currently runs at about 100,000 km/h. However the change in velocity is about 12,000 km per year given continuos thrust so it takes an awefully long time to reach a relatively high speed. The problem lies in the fact that it requires tremendous voltages to produce this form of propulsion and it would require even higher ones to increase acceleration by 1/2 or more.

    Nasa hasn't changed one bit

Well, it takes 2 years to get to Mars using conventional chemically propelled craft so....4 years of transit time total plus however long they stay on the planet. That's a very long time to be in space.

    Coc unified artillery 1.0 released

Speaking of naval surface fire, plop an few units on the deck of and HMS Hermes and you got yourself a battle ship. It's doesn't look pretty, but it works just fine. In fact it's a great platform for a battery since it's level and uniform. I've gotten great shell patterns off of them. However the normal setpos for the Hermes doesn't work with CoC units. Usually "this setpos [getpos this select 0, getpos this select 1,12]" will put an object nicely on the deck, but with a CoC unit I had to place it a bit higher: change the elevation value to 15. Another funny thing: I blew up all of my M-101's with a helicopter because I was mad at them and the MLRS next to them attempted to shoot me down.

    Why do bombs whistle?

Yeah, you can hear Arty if its going OVER or PAST you. Like Denoir said, modern artillery rounds are supersonic, therefor it would be quite impossible to hear a round coming directly at you being that it is travelling faster than the sound waves it is propagating. Mortars however, you can hear since they are sub-sonic. A good infantryman can even tell what size, and type a round is by its sound.

    Nasa hasn't changed one bit

Ha, I seriously doubt China will have a colony on Mars by 2010, hell, they won't even have the basic necessities for all of their citizens in my lifetime here on Earth. That would be an EXTREMELY aggressive undertaking even if NASA, ESA, and the Russians went in on it together.

    Nasa hasn't changed one bit

Hmmm, seems like we only keep NASA around to put satellites in space for us. (and to fix them) Meanwhile we throw them a bone and let them spend a chunk of the federal budget to put a Tyco RC car on a celestial object of little or no real importance in my opinion. NASA has for several decades fallen victim to what sociologists call "group think." Producing a brand of bureaucratic tunnel vision upon which fatal disasters are spawned from arrogance and apathy in general. If the space travel and exploration industry ever becomes privatized successfully NASA might find itself on the chopping block. I think most Americans ask "What's the point?"

    Coc unified artillery 1.0 released

I just wanted to thank everyone involved for this truly monumental add-on. The COC arty simulator is very flexible and easy to use. I particularly like the low/high angle option for getting rounds over high terrain which had been a problem in the past with a few good artillery scripts. Functionally it is a dream and I don't have to play with any sticky scripting that is over my head. The models look great despite the lack of interior skins but I'm not too worried since they aren't too funtional (or fun) as player controlled vehicles. As far as realism I don't think you can get much closer within the parameters of OFP. The commands are fairly accurate. It adds a whole new dimension to the game being that the batteries and the FO can be virtually anywhere on the map and it doesn't mess anything up. I'll be testing aggressively and will let you guys know if anything comes up, but so far so good. Those enemy barrages in some of the tutorial missions are downright scary, never have I felt so much like the AI is out to get me.

    Why do bombs whistle?

I'm pretty sure it has to do with drag on the bomb's surfaces creating sound waves.

    Best wwii movies?

I'd put SPR at the top of my list. I agree with Fubar that Kelly's Heroes is a good one, it's in my collection. I like the old black and whites too like the Longest Day and Patton. For some reason I really like the older black and white Navy WWII movies that are always on around 1:00 am. Personally, I though Thin Red Line was boring as hell. Documentaries are always good too.

    The Iraq Thread 2

Like most things that come out of you mouth, that's a opinion. The Israelis have some of the best human intelligence capablities in the world. I think even if we did everything right (i.e. the socialist supercillious European way) here in America you would still be a critic. Not exactly, I predicted the war as many people might remember. I support taking Saddam out of power, I was skeptical however, of the reasons we were told why we went to war. I do agree though with the TBA that it takes somewhat of a drastic rationale to convince anti-progress types in the UN General assembly. Over all as human beings I think we are becoming sissies. People get squamish over something even slightly pre-emptive in nature.(Even though technically the Hussein regime was trying very hard to violate imposed sanctions pushing the envelope to see how much they could get away with, which for 12 years the UN wanted to "continue to monitor and assess". In the long run I think it will be beneficial for the world to have characters like Hussein out of power. Do I think it was worth it, well, yes I do. Although I think there were more pressing issues in the world.

What is the mk 12 spr

Mk (Mark) designations are namely U.S. Naval nomenclature. The Army uses the M designator. Sometimes the two cross over branches as to avoid confusion but sometimes not.

Speed - not the movie - the bank robbery

Indeed Ralph. Police forces outside of say NYC or LA and other major metropolitan PD's do not have competent bomb squads.

    Beer thread

My city, Ft. Collins, Colorado is home to some of the finest craft breweries in the U.S. I myself, am strongly an anti-macrobrew individual. (i.e. Budweiser/Coors/Miller) Many smaller U.S. breweries are returning to traditional European brewing styles to bring taste back to our beloved beverage. While some of us disagree in almost every aspect, I think most of us can agree that Europe pioneered the art of brewing the ambrosia of the common man. Basically the aim of this thread is to get the opinions of this multi-cultural forum on beers and what would be good to try to expand the horizons of us beer enthusiasts. Our best two breweries here are New Belgium Brewing Co. and O'Dell's Brewing Co. New Belgium produces of course, Belgian style ales in the Belgian monk tradition. While I don't care for their ultra-traditional brews because they are a bit too dark for my taste, some of their lighter selections such as Fat Tire Amber Ale and Sunshine Wheat are among my favorites. (Try them, you will be pleased, considering this is American beer.) O'Dells produces two of my favorite beers, 90 Shilling Scottish style ale, and Easy Street Wheat, and unfiltered citrus laced beer. Both breweries are becoming popular at exponential rates among the more cultured beer drinkers in America. Does the cities or countries you live in produce any beers that you particularly like. Mainly I'd like to get an idea of what to try out. New Belgium O'Dells While I know these beers are not available in Europe, you might want to poke around some of your more refined liquor stores in the Western U.S. if you are interested

How would you rate your firearms knowledge?

I pretty much consider myself an expert in foriegn and domestic infantry weapons as well as civilian ones. I think many people around here would back that claim. I'm also fairly knowledgable about aircraft and naval armaments.

    The Iraq Thread 2

Bombs are bombs. They are designed to kill enemy troops, destroy his equipment, supplies, and break his morale. War is ugly, that's what they are for. I'm an advocate of precision guided munitions used with solid intelligence. The less civilians and friendlies hit the better. NBC weapons are just bad because they can have lingering effects and kill indescriminantly by fallout. Weapons such as naplam and cluster munitions should only be used in open terrain or in areas where civilian presence is highly improbable. I feel horrible after reading the story about the Iraqi boy that lost both his arms and his entire family after a bomb hit his house. Plenty of shock, but little awe.
