PS. Sorry if this has been discussed before. I did search all forums for "optimus" before posting.

Texture work looks great...as per usual Jag. Nice work!

Parvus, In the demo I can't get graphics anywhere near that!! How did you get those? My BF2 demo looks like Delta Force...all blocky and lagged. Could it be my GFX card. I have a 2.4Ghz rig with 1Gb Ram and a Radeon 9500. Would love to know how you got graphics like that or whether others have managed to anything less blocky.

Has there been an official statement regarding a beta testing program? I know this is not something BIS historically has done but with a firmly established community and a pool of demonstrated talent out there that has (in some cases) pushed the OFP1 engine to the limits I think it is about time BIS seriously considered it. Whether by invitation only or through a beta signup/evaluation program there would be plenty of volunteers to help ensure the product is as polished as possible when hits the shelves. Any official comment from BIS? Placebo..you out there buddy?

I don't get it...so what will the CPU be doing while the PPu is working. Isn't this what the CPU is designed for? Isn't it better to simply bet on new CPU technology like dual core processors rather than invest in a piece of technology which may only have limited application, will risk not being accepted and may become outdated with new 64bit dual core processors for home use about 2-3 years away?

I used to love playing Medic in OFP as well. Like you said...it's the roleplaying. The fact that I am participating in combat but also have a responsibility to heal and not take too many risks as I am there to help team mates maintain accuracy. Poor medic...a much maligned role in the FPS genre. Don't people realise that medics are the ones that get access to all the cool drugs Mmmm.....morphiney.

Same old story GranQ. Don't take it to heart. I think we all just got overloaded with addons and the lack of missions to go along with them that people don't expect missions to go with them. We also do have that habit of just firing up addons to peek and then commenting (myself included). Not sure why...but it is an interesting phenomenon. Don't give up on those missions though dude....addons are important...but it's the missions that make them shine. Tonal probably wouldn't have been as successful a release had we not included mission with it that showcased areas of the island.

The radio system, although highly flexible and powerful, is not really that intuitive. I hope to see a better method implemented. At the time OFP was released it seemed great....but it really became cumbersome after a while. Brother in Arms, although simplistic and needing refinement, has an excellent system for squad control.

I don't want to appear negative because these screenshots are impressive eye candy. But.... I'd like to see an improvment in FPS and hopefully these graphics support that. Remember there are many improvements we are hoping for in OFP than just better textures and models folks. I did have a chuckle as it seems the same ol' problems (or perhaps lack of attention to detail) are cropping up even after 4 years of coding for us fans. Notice anything wrong with this picture? Special Pic Hint: Look at the shadow. But don't get me wrong..this exciting news....but I'll reserve my judgement for when we start hearing more about the what the game itself delivers apart from very impressive eye candy.

Years of technical evolution under their belts and they have only now learnt to go up stairs. Sounds like Microsoft

They do exist!? *Walks up a few flights of stairs* *Phew* Â I'm safe. Watch out i heard they got hoverboards to! I heard they had also recruited .ASIMO as well (so stairs are no longer a defence) and as we speak the Daleks are builidng an army of AIBO's to rule the world. Soon our sidewalks will be covered in electronic AIBO shit. Plus there will be chaotic and random peeing on fire hydrants and leg humping. And that's just me....I hate to think what the AIBO's will do as well.
-
Excuse me while I laugh my ass off. If you think the programme sets a bad example to children, just wait until they get in touch with real life. You mean....Daleks really exist?? *loads shotgun and barricades the door* A new reason for me not to go outside my house. Back to naming my guns in my collection. *rubs M-16* Don't worry Charlene...I'll always be true to you.

Go the iBook...just made my gf buy one and I am seriously considering trading in my slick Vaio for one as well. OSX is simply stunning and for productivity and ease of use nothing beats the Mac.

Has anyone out there been involved in contributing to an open-source community project to build a final product? And yes...I am aware that addon making/mission making in teams is open-source in it's most basic form. But what I mean is a fully fledged open-source project. Can anyone share their experiences? Would anyone like to be involved in one? I'd like to know what experiences people have had with this. Reason I ask is I'm seriously entertaining the idea of perhaps starting one up to make the ultimate modern land based warfare simulator. There certainly is plenty of talent here to tap into...question is....is there a desire to make one? There are plenty of engines available to prototype any design ideas we come up with. As for the final engine we would need to see what happens. Definitely at this stage there are design documents, models and textures and GUI's to be created and tested before we even consider what engine to use for a final product. Sound off and tell Unky Tiger what a dreaming fool he is and how he should join Hellfish at the "funny farm". *starts making noises with his lips while drooling*

*tries to rub the stain off his pants* Thanks Pins...already looked at those but identified some short comings. I must say the engines der Blaster showed were interesting. Especially for open source engines. Shin, thanks for the lengthy breakdown. Certainly a great primer for what's involved. I am aware of what a huge project this can be and the Game Design Document is key here. I have actually begun one that explains how various things should work, including how weapon selection should work, etc. The design doc in itself will take a month or so to finish to be complete. I would anticipate this being a PC only game so OpenGL not necessary. Yes, there is a lot of work involved. This is why I was wondering if people had tackled this and whether they might be interested in tackling a homegrown project. It might be a wetdream.....but with Carmen Electra as my witness, it's something I'm thinking I be willing to at least prototype.

Kinda like the Total War series? This was the first game I think to implement a turn based scenario with then an optional RTS element to dictate the outcome of the turn. Except you propose a turn based/FPS hybrid. Interesting....very interesting....I wonder if the load time between turns might drive you insane though. Definitely an intriguing idea though. You could write that up and sell it Hellfish.

An example of the engine we could use to prototype: Grass Terrain and House Long Distance Terrain

I was thinking FPS....the first real "simulator" FPS....after OFP of course

Kait, Could you make C++ GUI's from a Photoshop image? Tiger

The problem I see at the moment is a lack of programmers. We seem to have plenty of modellers and texture artists as well as people with basic programming skills to make the CPP files for addons for example....and scripting.....but I'm not sure we have the people with the skills to do physics and AI programming. Do we?

LMAO...I think Pajama wins...although must have "terrosism" or "homeland security" or "war on terror" in the title to really add that buzzword factor and get the attention of public. Welcome back Pins!

Wow....when you said mini....you really meant it

Got a link Hell?

I disagree, I often found myself herding friendly AI out of my way or even worse see them being stuck on walls. Quite a disappointment. Maybe I haven't played it enough to notice that. What comments did you have on it Eizei? Why do you dislike it? Or is there a thread on CC:FTF already?

You are exactly right. The gamplay is competitive to a degree in that it is still Fix and Flank....however the various terrain in each scenario do allow you to decide which flank and how to move your squad. It does need variety. And as for being tunneled....no way to dispute that. That is its biggest let down. Also played Close Combat:First to fight this weekend. Now if you wanna talk about tunelling download that. For reasons that I can't quite articulate I really dislike this game. But the team AI felt very good...the enemy AI however...was very dissapointing. It felt like a Delta Force franchise derivative....which is OK if it is marketed like that. But they go on and on about how realistic it is.....pfft. BIA I enjoyed and could see some great gameplay enhancements. First to Fight I haven't got much to say. Except that I hate the Swat4 right click and then move the mouse left, right, up or down style of interface...it's too easy to make a mistake and too twitchy.
