Can healess client + dedicated server be used for SP and the campaigns?
terox replied to wasserkool's topic in ARMA 3 - SERVERS & ADMINISTRATION
a) The mission has to support headless client b) Headless client is for the MP scenario, SP is not MP c) Alternatives that cache ai may be of more use to you, such as @Alive d) There is only one method that could allow the use of 2 arma3.exe's on the same machine. (A headless client uses (arma3.exe -client) and therefore requires an individual steam account. Vipermaul discovered this recently. Instead of using -connect=127.0.0.1 he used -connect Localhostname eg the name you gave your PC during install (Open System by clicking the Start button right-clicking Computer, and then clicking Properties.) and having battleye disabled. Using this method he was able to run 1 client, 1 HC (Which is a special client) and the server locally on a LAN -

Freds A3 monitor screesnhot tells you everything HC AIL = 0 Server AIL = 104 It should be the other way around, then the server would get a higher fps than 7 -
Real player loading boat to waste vehicles
terox replied to zelectec's topic in ARMA 3 - MULTIPLAYER
That's just an idiot player who didn't have a clue what was going on because the server wasnt adminned correctly and he wasnt been controlled. Not having an admin on a server who is competent to do the job and quick enough to react is bound to get this type of behaviour Sorry but thats the truth The answer to public play is not to join a server that isnt administered correctly. IMO the players who run these servers would do us a big favour and shut them down so that players have less choice for public play, but the servers that are up would then control their behaviour and set the defacto standard which these newcomers would then comply with no matter what server they are on. its like letting a thief into a goldsmiths without any staff or security guard. Shut the shop until you can be in it -
is there a way to vote for admin in arma 3?
terox replied to LeeManatee's topic in ARMA 3 - MULTIPLAYER
have the players type #vote admin Playername or #vote admin Userid where userid is the first number in the row for a player entry when you type #userlist in your server.cfg make sure you set a voting threshold, 25% or 33% -

maybe you can supply an example basic mission which can be merged into other missions and works for say a civilian slot, this would then make it easy to implement into existing missions. I'd do that for ya. -

I havent opened the code up, but likely you are only using CBA to initialise the addon. if this is the case, you can rewrite the code and initialise using cfgfunctions preinit, therefore removing any requirements for other addons. -
Passage of command after respawn to 2ic (Needs fixing, please vote on ticket)
terox posted a topic in ARMA 3 - MULTIPLAYER
1) Group leader dies 2) Group Leader Respawns 3) Second in charge Player unit now has group leadership, Not the respawned group leader This can often cause a breakdown in command and control due to non responsive player who didn't initially want to take a leadership position and now unwittingly finding themselves leading a group when they may not have a microphone, or understand the voip channel system. Typically on an organised server, the group leaders are selected because they can respond to voip and have the ability to lead a group. Command channel can then be used. We are now getting situations where players who do not, can not take control of a group are being forced into that position Please vote on this ticket to raise awareness of this issue http://feedback.arma3.com/view.php?id=17520 -
try running a standard B.I mission, clear out your MpMissions list to try. Its probably the altis life mission. Seems a lot of folks have issues trying to set up altis life. maybe the B.I engine is trying to tell them something :-)

Tutorial: Installation & Configuration of ArmA3 Dedicated Server
terox replied to terox's topic in ARMA 3 - SERVERS & ADMINISTRATION
Have you proven the server install accessability yet from your friends client ? Did you clear all the missions out of the MpMissions folder on thes server? According to the .rpt you pasted, your server is running default ports, eg you didnt define a -port= I would suggest running a non standard port, eg 2402 When you friend has achieved connection to your server then try concentrating on your client install. For example. Try adding the following to the server config. (Its for the headless client, which runs an arma3.exe, so its very similar to running your client on the same box as the server) // Headless client settings localClient[]={127.0.0.1}; and then for your client, in the startup params use -connect=127.0.0.1 -port=(Whatever port you assigned the server with -port=****) -
New 60 slot server looking for players + feedback
terox replied to J0K3R 5's topic in ARMA 3 - SERVERS & ADMINISTRATION
Here's some tips/suggestions for you Kaysio, and good luck with it. To build up a decent community takes an awful lot of time and effort especially in the first few weeks and especially on your part. 1) If the server is up, be on it as admin. (If you cant be on it, take it offline) 2) Initially don't try to run it every night, select 2 or 3 nights a week to run it for a few hours and make sure you consistently do that on those nights for a few weeks. 3) While you are on, don't tolerate any idiots, team killers, players destroying vehicle assets etc. Spend a maximum of 30 seconds with them to "educate" them. Any more is a waste of your time and is better spent working with those who are trying. Get rid of the idiots as soon as you can. They wreck it for everyone else. 4) Initially get used to command and control via voip, either a combo of command and group chat or side and group chat .... Teamspeak at this point should be used as a hub for regulars to hang out on) 5) Before you launch the mission spend some time in the unit selection screen, checking those in a command role can communicate via voip. DO NOT accept group leaders or important roles such as helo pilots who cannot communicate on voip. It makes the task of leading a mission or adminning the mission more difficult and you need things to run as smoothly as possible. 6) Allow some clientside addons such as shacktacs hud etc 7) Initially select a popular public play mission that is easy to control, something like Invade and annex or Patrol ops 8) Lock the server when you have a decent but manageable force, eg you dont want 50 players to try and control when they are all newcomers to the server. Try with say a max of 20 initially. What will this do. a) If you admin it fairly and firmly and create organised game play, players will return. (They like consistency) b) As the regular numbers build select from them the most competent to admin the server. (These will be the guys that regularly take on leadership roles) c) Once you have your admin base and they are rotating taking responsibility, you can start to relax a bit and let them take the reigns. d) A busy server attracts more players, the more players the more group leaders and the more potential admins to reduce the strain on those already doing it. Once you have a busy player base and the admins to support it, extend the number of nights you host. At this point, you will need to monitor the server with something like EPM Rcon, so you can admin it without actually being ingame on the server. There are way too many servers out there left running without admins present. This causes the type of public gameplay that is regularly commented on in the forums. -
Passage of command after respawn to 2ic (Needs fixing, please vote on ticket)
terox replied to terox's topic in ARMA 3 - MULTIPLAYER
command chat and inability to control AI in the group and before anyone sparks up with teamspeak, acre etc. We are talking about issues that DO occur on a public server. The game has built in voip, with various channels. VOIP is the most accessible to new players New players tend not to be very Group Leader orientated or understand how to control AI In this situation you need veteran players to take leadership roles, which they do. Then they die and respawn, now we have a newcomer to the game, who may not even have a mic, have little clue what is going on, has no idea how to control AI etc and the whole mission becomes a shambles. The mission commander then has to cycle through to side chat and spam every player with comms that should be carried out on command chat. This is not an ideal situation Anyone who doesn't play a lot in public environments as either a mission commander or group leader will probably not appreciate the difficulty this causes for them. Anything that makes public play smoother has to be important. There is are an awful lot of players who come to arma, jump on a badly organised server or a mission that just doesnt cut it and leave arma for good. We need to try our utmost to keep this fresh blood in the Arma community so they can filter down to the clans, or the clans will eventually become stale and fade away. Good public gameplay is the place this has to start and the tools made available for that scenario should work their best -

copy the entire contents of the arm3 folder to a new location/folder, run the server from that location Running the server and the client from the same location/directory is going to cause file access issues -
Passage of command after respawn to 2ic (Needs fixing, please vote on ticket)
terox replied to terox's topic in ARMA 3 - MULTIPLAYER
It is an engine bug when the 2IC could be an AI, then what, ask the ai to nicely command the players via voip? For base respawn it should be the initial group leader. For group respawn, the next Player unit It should not be an AI If that's a Feature, then so is the uniform bug that removes the uniform on respawn Nice! In an MPmission, where the mission is played in an organised way , players will take a position of group leadership because they have the ability to command, use voip etc. Admins will even insist on those not responding on comms to deslot from such positions so that command and control can be established and maintained. Others will specifically not take a leadership role because they do not want the responsibility, don't have a microphone, dont know how to do it etc. As it stands right now, those unwilling, incapable will be forced into that position. I have seen countless numbers of gaming sessions fail or be negatively effected because of this and even knowledgeable and capable scripters do not code their missions to take this into consideration. This is moreso an issue in the public environment where newcomers to the game are ever present, than the clan / private server environment where most if not all players are experienced with Arma -

terox replied to terox's topic in ARMA 3 - SERVERS & ADMINISTRATION
The A3 server only requires steam for updating The A3 client requires the steam client running. Try turning UAC off, start everything as admin The server should be started first Initially you don't want any maps in the Mpmission folder You need to verify the server install by having your friend connect to it before you start adding any mpmissions, addons etc or try connecting via your client As is always the case, we need to see your cfg files (hide the password), your startup params. rpt etc etc post these in pastebin and link to them -

Suggestion: Maybe have the poll only take control of the server AI if the HC FPS is above say 15 or 20. This could possibly load balance between the server and hc better than allocating all ai to the HC I have seen our HC grind down to very low fps -

"This can easily be solved with scripting" is not a permanent solution to engine bugs. It is simply a temporary fix to a localised issue at best. Unless you personally are going to educate every single arma scripter to date and all those in the future and fix every mission already in existence -

HC seems to be more robust and hasnt failed so far. I'll be able to give a better confirmation after tomorrow nights gaming session On one test session I did notice something very odd on the A3 monitor The HC output was cycling the AI from remote to local and then back again every few seconds. What I mean by this was.... Say there was 45 AI on the mission. For a few seconds the A3 monitoring the HC would show these AI local to the HC then a few seconds later local to the server and kept looping like that This may have been a glitch on the A3sm as I have not been able to reproduce it -

Quick query on the headless client implementation. if(profilename == "headlessclient")then{..................}; 1) Does this mean I need to define -name=Headlessclient in the headless client startup params so that the HC will work? 2) .... or will it pick up the headless client regardless of the -name used through some later code I haven't seen that searches for !hasinterface if its No.1, that will have been the reason for my HC issues -
Possible to get multiple arma.exe (steam) instances running?

Question for server admins: what kind of setups are you running?
terox replied to vohk's topic in ARMA 3 - SERVERS & ADMINISTRATION
Primary hardware spec needs to be the CPU especially for coop Get the fastest intel based quad core you can afford even if you intend just running 1 Arma3 server. This also then gives you the advantage of being able to run a headless client which if you intend running large numbers of AI is very useful. You don't need fancy ssd's, the only improvement they will give you on a dedi is boot up time. You will need to spec up for additional HD storage space for large mods that will come eventually 8gb ram will be more than ample for the server, HC, o/s and also additional 3rd party apps such as teamspeak etc GPU not used on a dedi. It has been said that the most optimised setup is a basic o/s, eg not virtual ware and for best bandwidth performance, you will need it to be set up at a datacentre. typically this is a minimum of 100Mb line more often than not these days 1Gb Our server Twin xeon x5570's Enterprise HD's 16Gb ram that easily accomodates up to 3 production servers and 1 test server and the cpu is now fairly old by todays standards -
