    James Gastovski Blog

I don't know who's writing this blog but it doesn't sound like the James Gastovski I'm used to know. Maybe his old comrades would enjoy(???) combat pictures of their own war? Of course, they could be interested but not enjoyed. "Crazy Emotions"? About a war? Probably sad emotions... And what about "young men still fighting on Malden"? Wasn't it peaceful a few weeks ago when he was wandering around there? And why would they be fighting with gear of 1985 today? Is his English that bad or is mine? You'd better stick to the disillusioned character and opinions about war that James has shown throughout the games. Now he sounds like a player giggling about new fluffy blood effects and trendy camo patterns. Do you remeber what effect the bad story telling of the ArmA campaign had in the end?

    Irritating Mouse Lag

Well when I run around in real life I'm not limited to animations... Yes, the random delay I notice is part of the +-500ms brake. When you compare sec2 and sec6, the first stop is like achieving it in 1ms and the second try is equal to 500ms. You'll hit any value in between at random every time you stop running. It was more predictable in OFP.

    Irritating Mouse Lag

What I see on your video ofpforum is exactly the sluggishness what I notice when i play. And I don't like it. Maybe it's because I prefer 1st person that I find the responses bad. In 3rd person it looks sooo real and maybe someone gets used to it playing in this view. But what would really be a realistic and precise movement control is a full stop animation transition as soon as any button is released. I don't want to feel like piloting an AI robot while playing a human alter ego when it comes to response time. Video sec 2: almost perfect stop sec 6: there it is, he finishes one step more, probably 1m forward unwanted sec 8: ok sec 10: almost, but the model does somekind of torso "turning in" movement after button release, which will be noticed in 1st person aiming i think. sec12: ok sec16: it finishes the last step after button release but because of the slow movement it's not much of a problem sec 20: as above sec 25: like sec 6, this time it almost looks like 1 and 1/2 step too much

PC Discussion Thread - All PC related in here.

I would put it one hour in some kind of baking oven, on a temperature equal to the former working temperature. Then try to remove it with pliers. Or maybe just a razor blade will do. Just forget about the values you're possibly about to damage.

    Irritating Mouse Lag

None of us can fix this animation. But when the question had arised again it's a sign for me that a relatively new board member has seen not one of the zillion posts yet. So don't forget to mention the downsides of the problem itself while encouraging him to put large efforts into optimizing his whole system for a not so optimized software.

    Operation Farmland Mod

That's nice to read again from you guys. Dave does that mean that Scott_T isn't working himself on new Arma Zombies anymore?

    Irritating Mouse Lag

Please let me inform you that your question was answered mostly by "Pro Arma" members, also called fanboys. Guys it's a shame that you refuse to give away informations reported since the release. At least stop ignoring them for a moment when someone is asking for troubleshooting! Arma controls are sluggish like hell. Many old OFP PvP players can't find a way to adapt to ArmA till now, what will be a main reason for the overwhelming amount of coop games online. A kind of "mouse grid" which is too rough for small targets is present since OFP. Some players have reported that it's possible to overcome if your mouse supports hardware based dpi changes on the fly. But still you'll have to choose between precise/ultra slow and normal speed every time. Especially the running-stop issue is a problem caused by the animation system used in ArmA. By default all animations are influencing the responses of your player model and they are allowed to finish playing one by one. So until it's bug fixed by now, reloading soldiers seem to be invincible when hit but die as soon as their previous reloading animation has finished. The running animation is just too long to allow a controlled movement. When you release the control unfortunately at the first step of the looping running-animation your soldier puppet will always play the full animation consisting of three steps or whatever. EDIT: But of course, it's right that everything is worse when playing with low FPS, so all the hints above improving them are well-meant nevertheless.
  8. There's the German expression for heavy rain "it's pouring like from buckets" and that's exactly what the addon looks like for me in 1024x768. Though I don't believe it's about the resolution. The rain sprites are looking too extreme. Maybe it'll look more real when you use rain drops as thin as in the original Arma rain texture for the moving sprites. Also the estimated drop amount should be matching with the ArmA ground water drops. It seemed to me that there's a noticeable difference.

    Make sound follow a car

I was told about this camera bug by Mandoble, but I've also seen cutscenes in which at least talking AIs seemed to play their say sounds directional. So maybe in this case you're right when you put the car radio into the driver himself. First find out the right db value outside of this cutscene then return to it and let the driver say "radio". It's possible that it'll be played directional then.

    Make sound follow a car

Are you doing this in a cutscene watched through a camera? That can bug a say sound to play annonymous no matter what you do. Otherwise just reduce the db value in big steps until you hear nothing and then move it up in small steps. Don't forget reloading the mission every time in ArmA for any description.ext changes to take effect.

    Make sound follow a car

You've got to find the right db value for the sound. Don't forget to reload your mission in ArmA after every description.ext change. e.g. sound[] = {"\Sound\Radio.ogg", db-50, 1.0}; Try it first without moving the car, I've read about some disortion when adding say sounds to moving vehicles. And you should name the car and then let itself emit the say sound. Won't make a difference for now but it's more logical to attach the "radio" to the car.

    Videos & Screenshots

Yeah, I remember an early promotion video released before 2000. There it still looked more like what Battlefield and it clones look now. It's probably the better idea to make it more unique nowadays, as it's rules are more about fun and balance anyway. After many years this seems to be a game I'm eager to buy again. It's sad but this video and the others show more heart and dedication than ArmA to me.

    Trigger woes!

So have you tried putting another waypoint -before- the one you need, and syncing that with the trigger (of type switch?)?

Ask a moderator about the forum and the rules

In the past I would have rated the search function perfect, at the moment it has become way to slow when I try to search "older" topics back to the early days. Sometimes it takes more than five minutes and I cancel it. Not all of the topics you listed are equal for me. After a first glance at the titles, there are topics about: -discussing and promoting TrackIR -sorting out TrackIR bugs -looking for places to buy TrackIR I would want to merge everything to at least three different topics, if merging is the only possibility. What would be wrong about deleting posts immediately, of which you clearly know the answer/a proper old topic can be found with a search?

Ask a moderator about the forum and the rules

That "rules button" would be good. Help isn't the first place I would look at for restricting rules, though they belong there, too. Adding more functionality is a nice idea but I don't believe there will be a change in the board engine soon, as everything seems to be about money for BIS now.

Ask a moderator about the forum and the rules

So the main goal of today's moderators is to keep all information squeezed into the frontpage because every user is too lazy to read the following pages, but has to be willing to read through dozen of pages in a sticky thread??? You guys are working against the practical ideas of this board system with your new <s>rules</s> system of organization. Look how many complaints about too long stickys are already showing. There are two ways to search for infos about a common/repeatedly posted problem. With a long sticky post: At first you try the the board search function. Sooner or later it will always show sticky posts in the results, it doesn't matter what keyword you were searching, on hundreds of pages full of words you'll always score a hit. Then you'll open the sticky thread because there's no other thread left with a promising title. Either you're a noob and you'll give up reading after page 35 or you've got to know unknown expert resources to get hold of all the mixed up informations. You can add the hl/highlight to the board link and turn page by page, or you hit the print button and scan all posts on one screen with highlight or the search functions of your Internet browser. With stickys the search becomes a joke. Now tell me, is that the way anyone at Iconboards programmed this former user friendly message board for? With many posts about the same subject: You do the search and it probably returns a max of 10 pages of results. All thread titles seem to read the same... So you use common sense and select the topics with a decent title and many replies first. When they show up, your keywords are already automatically highlighted and you're easily able to scan read the 1 or 3 pages if they've got what you were looking for. Sure at a high count repeatedly posted topics are bad in the general idea of this board design, too. But as long as the search results are useful it will slow down the appearance of repetitions. Squeezing everything onto the front page reminds me of all those "organized" lazy guys with their one hundred and then some desktop shortcuts. My solution would be a board rules sticky in every single sub category. Right now it's almost impossible to find the board rules. Then after everybody knows the rules, delete every repeating thread without hesitation. Well, maybe an automatic PM referring to the rules could do.

What kind of exercise is this?

Pic I've found this picture of an exercise of the Chinese Army and I'm speculating why they are doing this. Of course, it looks frightening and should teach you how to deal with pain but is there any tactical use for it? It doesn't look like they should do it in full combat gear later and burry their rifles in mud...?

    Real Looking Island?

Are there really any islands for OFP with grass? I only know about some kind of grass script. Anyway the original Sarugao island is my all time favorite for a real looking custom island. Excluding the small desert regions, it features the Everon flora. There are small and big villages/towns. Another interesting island could be a US desert scenario with railways, skyscrapers, pipelines, habour... but I've forgotten the name.

    I cant see at night.

When you look towards the sun in ArmA, the screen also dims. ArmA can simulate the bad visuality/glare caused by bright light only by darkening of the scenery. I don't think any monitor has enough lux to simulate such things the real way, with absolute highlights on the screen. Anyway that would be wrong because everyone would be worried about their eyesight while playing a game that is actual able to blind them.

    I cant see at night.

I'm still unsure if you guys are really having a bug there or if you're just expecting too much visibility with all those fency vision effects in ArmA now. e.g. I can't set much different gamma/brightness settings as the default ones when I want to see something in every possible situation (dark, dust, nv, sunglare) and not just in one of them absolutely perfect and gorgeous. Some scenes in ArmA could recreate the look of underexposed photos on windows desktop. If your gamma is set wrong or even worse the contrast of your monitor is bad, you'll have a hard time to adjust everything until you'll see better, without blurring pictures of normal brightness.
  22. Trapper

    I cant see at night.

@Heatseeker Even if it's not the "everything is bright green" problem, have you tried to play with brightness/gamma sliders in a situation where your NVG are blacked out?

    Why so many Evolution servers?

What is "stock ArmA gameplay" for you? I don't believe the few halfhearted official DM/CTF/SC missions would ever attract many players to multiplayer. The only good official missions are coop and ArmA shouldn't be limited to just this. It always were the custom missions with innovative gamemodes that made OFP mp big.
  24. Trapper

    Did anyone notice

Just like the M1A1 smoke in OFP. I've never checked if it is fixed in ArmA now.

Where is ctf in the editor

There are no game type "options" in the editor. You're just free to script whatever you like. What you're looking for are mission templates, there were some official in OFP. I don't know about ArmA. But BAS released a multiplayer framework for ArmA which should offer a template for creating CTF missions. And you can always depbo a CTF mission which has everything you like and just change it's layout.
