  1. **EDIT - the real issue here is that when a player or script gives a command to an AI teamate, the AI should respond to that command immediately (or within reason) regardless of which "mode" they are currently in. In this way the AI wouldn't have to switch "out" of combat mode but merely put their current mode in a sort of holding pattern until the user requested (or script requested) action is complete.

    ^ This, by the gods.

  2. They quit often need to be micro-managed but then again , you as their leader should be responsible for their actions anyway.

No. They're grown men, whom I expect to have a minimum of a clue of what they're supposed to be doing at any given time without an express order from me.

  3. Since the release of vanilla ArmA 2, there has been a lot of discussion about the bugs in some of the game's more open-ended missions, particularly "Manhattan" and "Dogs of War", if my memory serves me correctly. However; at this point, I'd actually like to talk a little about the actual mission, itself.

I started playing through Harvest Red relatively late, and has just "completed" Manhattan. I can't say for sure that I have encountered any particular bugs - mostly when things go wrong, I can't for the life of me decide whether or not it was a bug, I made a mistake, or if the mission was just poorly designed. For example, I once waited for ages for Whatsherface 'Daki sympathizer to appear at the church without her ever showing, and I still have not been able to find the arms-smugglers anywhere. And I've played that fucking mission at least five times, now.

But, bugs aside, I just happen to think Manhattan is simply a generally bad mission.

I mean; it's not fun, it's not even very challenging and I spent 90% of it driving endlessly from A to B in my little APC. You drive to village X, talk to some NPC, drive to village Y, (on the complete opposite side of the map, of course.), where you are told to meet someone at village Z. And, of course, on the long, long, long way over there, nothing happens. You and the three other guys just sit there, gazing emptily into space, the APC slowly trudging away through dirt-roads and villages. You get bored of Chernarus quickly.

And whenever you actually do come across some enemies or a half-hearted firefight between some three CDF-rednecks and maybe five 'Dakis, (about three times in the entire mission.), you can bet your ass they won't have any sort of AT-capabilities, and as such can do absolutely nothing while your gunner mows them down literally without resistance. You just have to park the APC somewhere and watch. I have completed the whole mission maybe firing ten shots.

    ---

Two missions later, I had joined the CDF, and when the mission started, I actually almost fell out of my chair in shock. There were people shooting at me. There were friendly forces shooting back. I was actually playing a wargame! I was actually entertained! I was actually having slightly fun! :butbut: It partially resembled the feeling I got when I recently played the first Operation Arrowhead mission. Two squads were assaulting an enemy-held airport, before moving in to support a larger offensive, with multiple friendly and enemy units operating all around you. This was actually a bit like the old Operation Flashpoint, in a way! I was actually participating in something resembling a genuine military operation!

So, to get to my point; what were your experiences with Manhattan? Do you have any thoughts on it? Have I completely misunderstood the whole thing, or do you generally agree? I remember the Manhattan briefing telling my about SecOps, but I never experienced any. Is that maybe why it sucked? Was the player supposed to regularly be issued SecOps throughout the mission, thus breaking up the tedium, but a bug prevents me from getting any?

    Please, do share your thoughts.

  4. Collecting evidence is not necessary to receive a good ending to the game. The evidence does come in handy towards the very end of the game though:

In the last mission of the game, titled "Dogs of War", you will be released into what is essentially free roam gameplay as the CDF battles over the whole of Chernarus with the Chedaki. Provided you have enough evidence (sorry, I don't know the exact amount), after recapturing the city of Chernagorsk Cpt. Shaftoe will contact you and send tanks, helicopters, and infantry to help you in the battle.

From a story standpoint, the evidence of war crimes serves as the USMC's excuse to the UN for their re-entry into Chernarus.

So, as you can see, the evidence isn't required, but certainly makes your mission a heck of a lot easier.

That is a lovely post. Thanks a lot for the help. :)

  5. I've installed OA Beta Patch 71900. But when I try to start it from the shortcut in the "Beta"-folder, I get an error message saying "No Entry ".ProfilePathDefault". Then the game boots, then the screen goes black before turning into a multitude of colours, and then I'm kicked to desktop.

    So... help?!

  6. Really? You're terrified of this? It's just a game, dude. Relax.

So what? Seeing as it is, in fact, a game, (as you so observantly pointed out.), I intend to, you know, win it. And for that reason, I'm not going to play through twelve fucking missions only for the Chedaki to rape everyone to death because I forgot to pick up photograph #3 in mission 2.

Anyway, I don't think you need to to collect 100% evidence to get the "good" ending.

    You think, or you know?

  7. The manual OA patch messes up the Steam version of OA. AFAIK, using the manual 1.07 patch on the Steam version of ArmA2 (though it's already patched on Steam so I don't see why you would) should work fine.

The problem with the OA version right now is that it messes with the Securom copy protection when you use the manual patch. It expects a DVD to be in the drive when, because you have a Steam version, there is none.

Besides, in another thread, BIS already confirmed that the "latest" build in the manual patch is unnecessary for Steam, in that it doesn't really make any major changes over the Steam version.

...Soooo, the manual 1.52 patch only messes up the STEAM version of OA, but not the STEAM version of Vanilla ArmA 2?

But what about the Sprocket version of OA? It still works after the patch?

  8. Is your version of OA already 1.52.71816? If so then you already have the patch.

Mine also says "1.52.71612", so clearly I don't have the newest version. :butbut:

But here's the core of the problem: my original ArmA 2, (Not Arrowhead.), is on STEAM. And didn't you people just say that downloading the manual patch that has been provided in this thread messes up the STEAM-version? That's why I don't dare to patch it.

  9. Yes, unless you can find the dedicated server .exe separately.

    Like this?

For those not wanting to download an over 100mb 1.52 patch, just for the dedicated server.exe...

    1.52 arma2oaserver.exe (4.89mb)

Anyways; is that all? Is there no other reason why I should download the patch? No actual fixes? I have the Steam-version of the original ArmA 2. (Not OA.) Will this break the game, as some commented earlier in this thread?

  10. Fuck the Endings, after reading this thread and being suffered by trying to finish Dogs of War from last 1 month, I do not feel like finishing/playing this Mission!

Whoah, whoah, wait a fucking minute - is the campaign still bugged to the point of suckage? Shit. I was thinking of picking the game up again, and giving it another go. Screwing around in the Editor is only interesting for so long, and I don't give a shit about multiplayer.
