Depiction of war in video games

Yes. Mostly highly trained ex special forces or in the halo of special forces, not the "regular" airborne trooper. The KSK for example always had the problem that very few would stay long because the pay is so miserable (despite the increased pay for special forces). PMCs do less dangerous stuff, with less of the military/political bullshit for more money. It's a no brainer really. And still you can choose for what you get paid for. So contrary to Vilas' belief, you can choose to remain integer and loyal to your homeland while fighting as PMC. You just do it for more money.
  2. Started working on something. Sorry for the bad angle, it's a shot I made during testing. Who recognises the pattern? :) Gotta take a few liberties of course, but I'll do the best I can to keep it close to the original.

Or just have them hold a rifle and body armor in shooting stance. Switch a little between high ready/low ready. :D Good read on that article. I think I'd like a closer to reality depiction of war.
  4. The language itself is not hard to learn. Really, it's a very basic set of tools. What is important is to understand and use all the tools how they should (and not necessarily can) be used. From a quick look, codeacademy seems to have some kind of goal driven learning. Meaning you have a goal and should use the tools you have to reach it (as in building a chair instead of just working wood). That should be a good start. You just have to understand that javascript is not java (though iirc it can compile to java bytecode). The next step is good practice and then sometime you will find yourself using the last little intricacy of the language. The art there is to keep it simple and not make your life harder by doing so.

    Thanks, I'll look into them.
  6. O.k. I see where he is getting at. To give some perspective on what he's saying: you can't expect a hammer to work well for screws. Every ill used tool will fuck you up.

I got that far. I believe I have a pretty good moral compass. The problem is what seems to be right for one, is absolutely wrong for another, because different facts are weighted differently. That reminds me of Joschka Fischers speech in front of his party in 99 (when Kosovo was getting hot). He would start his speech and people of his party would shout "Warmonger" because he, as minister for foreign affairs had Germany go into the Kosovo. His answer was "You call me warmonger, but you would nominate Milosevic for a peace nobel price". I think it's too easy to judge something by the bad aspects only, I try to see it as a whole. And that's why I disagree with your earlier one sided post. The U.S. had a few fuck ups in their foreign policy since WW2, I grant that. I think even before there was a fuck up where they wouldn't actively go to war against Germany earlier, but hey. For most of the wars the U.S. were in, I understand why they did it. Anti communism action (Korea, Vietnam, Grenada), anti american actions (Panama), anti terrorism actions (afghanistan, iraq). But I realise I might be missing some facts, which I would welcome to have and then reevaluate.
  8. Right. He's not the messiah, I'm the messiah? Would you care to elaborate why exactly Gradle is so much better than Maven? Since you obviously have vast experience with both...

Sure we can't change the past. But no, we do learn from it. That's how diplomatic relations degrade and improve, for example. I'm not saying NATO should stick together at any cost because they've been through the cold war. I'm just saying every partner shouldn't make an elephant out of a fly and balance the cost vs. the benefit. A cost for example could be to loose trust and support of that nation they're "ratting out" on. Indeed. And exactly that makes it so hard for me to classify actions as right or wrong. Well, if you did your research, I'll be glad to check out what you found. Until then I'm very satisfied with the news I get from different sources right now.

The past is the past doesn't make good alliances. I'm having difficulty following your argumentation. By the third world countries you mean countries like Korea, Vietnam, Grenada? Yea, that's not such a bad thing imo. I'd love my country to step up a little more... Oh, I'm not so much into favoring one or another. I'm for arguments.

The europeans were very happy to have the US during the cold war. And if by destabilizing you mean getting rid of dictators, then they can carry on. If they could I'd also have them play police in some other "nations" like the sudan, because the europeans are too much of cowards. Now just let me say, I am aware of some ulterior motives and see them with growing unrest, but that rant was imo a little one sided.

    "Tab" targeting issues

    1. It would break commanding the AI. 2. It would not reflect the capabilities of a Longbow Apache or any other vehicle with that kind of guidance/detection system.
  13. +1 Making it open source helps others and it would help me make better code by feedback or changes from others. It's imo a win-win, even if there is no credit.

Or maybe they'll combine Steam and Origin. Like some MS Live games.

What was your worst/best/funniest holiday like?

I like holidays were I can alternate much between being busy, eating and idling. Once for example I was on Guadeloupe, made my diving level 1 there in 3 weeks, went hiking in the mountains and could sleep a lot in the sun (hammocks ftw).
  16. Additionally, while skimming through the methods available to the RV lib I discovered some commands that were not available over SQF/SQS. Just didn't have time to test if they are functional. @rfc: I know what you mean. But what makes java not "fun" in the work environment is mostly the corporate stuff that comes with it. Stuff like "I don't comment because the code says it all", overdone structure for small projects, mostly rigid (and bogged down) procedures and last but not least the ages it takes to upgrade versions or switch frameworks. I have fun coding java the way I want. Though I think I'd enjoy python a lot more with type safety. As a java breather I'm in agony without variable initialization. xD
  17. Minecraft uses java too. I couldn't think of any reason to use C# over java. Except for better MS product compatibility (DirectX ?).
  18. Very nice read! Does the radar altimeter go to 0 when the helicopter is banking/pitching too much? I don't know whether the real one does tho. Just remember that random fact from Lock On :) Now I've got to try those TOWs :D
  19. Great job! Out of curiosity, why exactly do we have to remove the Object as parent class. Iirc every class is extended from object anyway? Oo
  20. Yea I have the same problem. Especially since that BS doesn't prevent terror. It just helps with the investigation. That reminds me of a quote from Benjamin Franklin.

    "Tab" targeting issues

If DM wasn't such a ninja, I'd use it. :P Funny thing in this thread is, everybody is talking about different stuff. Always in favor of their own way they want to have the game. But while we're comparing apples and pears: Every modern tank has a hunter/killer principle where the commander can pinpoint the gunner to a target. Within a second. This isn't implemented in ArmA either.

    +1 Asymmetric balance ftw!
  23. What helps me is to have a reference point far away from the helicopter. Most people tend to make too strong inputs and over correct and a close reference point reinforces that. Just select a biiig field somewhere and hover around in it. Just try to stop any movement that comes up and don't try to hold it over a steady point. You'll notice with time that you can anticipate what the helicopter is going to do and counter it before it happens. And slowly but surely the helicopter will stay at the one point you want. This might help too: Also: stay low in the ground effect. If you're too high you might start bobbing up and down or "slide" off. ---------- Post added at 09:54 ---------- Previous post was at 09:35 ---------- Sorry missed the landing part. At first it helped me to land with some forward speed. That way you avoid the ground effect. When you're able to hover it's going to be much easier. I still have problems with my approaches because I can't find the right vertical speed + forward speed. But try have a reference point in your cockpit and hold your landing point there with collective, while holding the same speed(about 60 KIAS) with cyclic. You'll have to break once you're on ground height and will land a little further than your aiming point but hey it's a start.
