    FP : DR - News & Discussion

Nice reload animations! Big improvement from the original OFP. There were some arcade elements, but overall I did not think the game was too bad. I wonder what options can be turned off in the difficulty settings, as I would like to eliminate at least some of the HUD. The only source of concern for me was that the game seemed to stutter at certain points, primarily around foliage and when the player was looking at the grass while walking/running. I'm hoping there aren't performance issues, as that is my primary concern with both OFP:DR and ArmaII. -Student Pilot

    FP : DR - News & Discussion

Someone is reading way too much into my comments... Really, there is not much need to get so defensive about what I said. You've been around since 2005, you should remember, if you were semi-active in the forums, that graphics has been an ongoing debate in the community. In general, when someone would compare OFP's, and to a lesser extent, Arma's, graphics to one of the newest shiny shooters, the defense would be that graphics did not make a game, but gameplay did. That is a very valid defense and still applies even now, though I do not see OFP:DR defended in anywhere near the same vigor as OFP/Arma. Quite the opposite, in fact. I just find it amusing. But whatever, I really do not care about this debate, which is why I am not active in this thread. I just wanted to make a statement because everyone has an opinion on the internet and has to give it. I'll leave the debating to others, because I learned long ago that these pissing contests are not worth their trouble. -Student Pilot EDIT: I agree about ArmaII's graphics. Very nice looking game!

    FP : DR - News & Discussion

CM posts new movie/screenshot, que several posts saying how much it suxors without giving a real reason why. *sigh* Honestly, to my eyes it does not look too bad. Again, though, we did not see any AI, and that is really the key, isn't it? All of these posts railing OFP:DR's graphics make me laugh considering a few years ago everyone was defending OFP/Arma's poor graphics by saying it wasn't about the graphics. Nice consistency, fellas. The one thing that struck me was the fluidness of the game. Right now I am leaning toward ArmaII, but honestly, if the ArmaII demo runs horribly on my machine while the OFP:DR demo runs smoothly, guess which one I am going to buy? Despite its shortfalls, I can have more fun humming along smoothly on OFP:DR than stuttering forward with ArmaII. I am hoping BIS doesn't disappoint me again after Arma, but I do understand that my comp is somewhat underpowered and they are not responsible for making their game fit everyone's dilapidated hardware. -Student Pilot

    Universe & Science Facts

So would you be stuck in that parallel universe unable to return to the one you used to know? What would the people in the original universe see or experience? Would you essentially disappear and not be heard from again? I watched the videos you posted about String theory, m theory, and parallel universes. Interesting stuff, but it totally blows my mind. I really cannot grasp some of these concepts...which is probably why I study finance and am not involved in science at all... Another question, assuming string theory or m-theory is right and all this stuff about rolled up dimensions and parallel universes are true, what application of this knowledge can be used to benefit mankind? I assume that all of this great knowledge could benefit mankind rather than just being interesting facts? -A very confused and amazed Pilot

    Universe & Science Facts

Bah, this stuff is fascinating, but totally blows my mind. How can you arrive before you even depart? This relativity stuff is crazy. Now, I am nowhere near an expert on anything science related, but isn't one law of physics that matter cannot be created or destroyed? If so, would arriving before departing as described in the example violate this principle? Essentially, in that specific space-time, matter (you) would have to be created in order for you to arrive before your departure. Or am I missing something in this time-travel process? How can matter from a future time coexist with matter in the present if it is the same matter (which it should be if the matter time traveled)? And this leads to another question: if I arrive before I depart and kill my departing self before I leave, what the hell happens? -Pilot EDIT: Whoa now, I thought this was impossible.

    Indiana Farmland

I'm from Indiana, and I have to say your map looks about what it looks like when I'm flying over the countryside. Â Nice job! I had to laugh when I saw the thread title, though. Â World's most boring addon was the first thing I thought when I saw it About where in Indiana is this map based? -Pilot EDIT: My AVG software claimed that the hosted file (or some part of the website) was infected. Â Can someone verify and/or host a new mirror? Â If I can get a hold of the copy I can host a mirror from Mediafire. EDIT 2: Where abouts do you hail from Binkowski?

    Earth Hour 2009

I am not going to debate the scientific or statistical arguments of global warming. I am not going to debate whether or not we should adopt green policies "just in case" global warming is real. I am not going to try to say how many scientists and governments agree with my point of view and thereby make my point of view right. What I am going to say is: While earth hour was occurring we in Wisconsin were getting a large snowfall. Having had record snowfalls this year and really cold temperatures, I am tired of snow. I say turn on as many lights as possible, churn out carbon dioxide pollution, and start cutting down some trees so that this damn place known as Wisconsin starts warming up a little. That's all. -Student Pilot

    FP : DR - News & Discussion

oh, ok. But really, how many different ways can you do a crouching animation (or any animation)? They are going to look somewhat similar. If anything, at least in OFP2 the soldiers are holding the guns properly, so there's some improvement

    FP : DR - News & Discussion

ok, at risk of sounding like an idiot, but... Exactly how different were you expecting still pictures of the animations to be? Animations are just that, animations. Their whole purpose is to depict movement. To try and make comparisons on animations based on pictures is missing the mark. Now, if you can show me a video that shows OFP and OFPII animations being the same, I will agree with you. But pictures that do not depict movement? Come on guys...

Link? If true, that does suck. Â Even OFP: CWC had civies. Â That's a strike against Dragon Rising in my book.

    FP : DR - News & Discussion

Well, after viewing the OFP2 video, I'm not exactly sure where all this "this is crap" stuff is coming from. Nothing in that video really disgusted me. Graphically, I did not have any problem with OFP2. Not sure about gameplay, although it looked a little run-'n-gun. But really, there was not enough footage to tell us that for sure. I have not made judgement on OFP2 as of yet. Personally, I am going to wait for the demo before I make my decision. I can only afford one game right now, so ArmA2 and OFP2 will be the competitors. And frankly, if I get better performance with OFP2, even though the gameplay may not be as good, I will buy it. I wasted $40 on ArmA because the game has terrible performance on my computer. If ArmA2 is anything like ArmA performance-wise, then I will not spend money on it. I don't care how great or realistic it is.

    Operation Flashpoint 2 officially announced

Sometimes we great people who are the OFP/Arma community make me laugh.  We go on and on about realism over graphics and then make graphical comparisons on two upcoming games and decide one sucks while the other is God-sent. I will only be able to buy one game when they come out, and I have decided to wait until all of you buy both games and let all of us know how they stack up.  Both games look promising, even in this realatively early stage, and both are still on my radar.  The primary deciding factor for me, though, will be mouse control.  If Arma II still has the vague, laggy, extremely strange mouse control that Arma has I will refuse to buy it.  I don't play Arma anymore because of the mouse control; I still use OFP.  I am really hoping BIS doesn't disappoint here, because I really want to play Arma II, and if it comes down to a tie between the two games I would choose BIS over Codemasters. My $.02.  I shall disappear back into the woodwork now for the next two years  -Pilot

    The Art thread

I had an art class here at college last fall. Â Being an accounting and finance major, it wasn't my choice. Â But I actually enjoyed it and thought the results were ok. Â Here are some ears of corn from a still life we did in class Medium: Charcoal I have a drawing I really like (not corn), but my camera is dead and I don't have a scanner. Â About time to buy some batteries, I think. -Pilot

    AI Paths Lod

Hey everyone, After a long hiatus from modelling and texturing (which I never really got good at to begin with), I'm thinking of starting a little project for ArmA to get me feet wet again. Before I start putting effort into this, though, I have a few questions about the paths lod. Are the AI able to negotiate indoor paths better than OFP? My plan is to make a large building and I want to know if the AI can handle it. Furthermore, are AI able to go from one building straight to another without going outside? I ask because the building I am planning is large enough to be divided into several objects. Thanks for any help. -Pilot

    Queen's Gambit goes gold!!!

@Ethne and everyone who feels the same way While the community makes great addons, how long does it take them to do it? Â RHS Soviet Pack did not come out overnight. Â If BIS decided to wait for the community to provide the content, we would be waiting a long time for these great addons. Â If all of you will take a step down memory lane, these great OFP addons didn't start coming out until years after OFP was released. Â If BIS waited around for the community that long, everyone would complain about how long it would take for them to release the product (anyone remember the complaints about how long it took ArmA to come out?). Â The product, due to development time, might also be graphically inferior to existing products, and more complaining would ensue from that angle. Â BIS has to release something with the engine, or else no one would buy it, and they can't spend years producing those "somethings", or the game would be in a stage of continual development and would never be released. True, but this endless content does not come out overnight, and most of it is not compatible with other addons. Â The OFP addon situation was frustrating. Â Most addons had bugs or error messages with them, were incomplete, and/or didn't work well with other addons. Let's keep things in perspective, people. Â OFP was great, but it wasn't this flawless, perfect, game people make it out to be, and it certainly wasn't perfect overnight. Â The commmunity addons for OFP were great, but they were/are far from perfect. I for one, once I can fit it into my college budget, am looking forward to purchasing Queen's Gambit. Â The new story line seems interesting and refreshing. Â The new content is comparable in quality to the existing ArmA content, so it will fit right in. Â And from the reports I've heard of the new content, Porto should be fun to roam around in (and for you MP players, play in). -Pilot EDIT: Wow, I'm slow
  24. Ok, I just bought ArmA today and was eagerly looking forward to playing it. Â Installation went without a hitch, but the game won't even load. Â I get the following error message upon startup: My specs are as follows: 2.00 GHz CPU NVidia GeForce 2, driver version 6.14.10.4482, 28 mb Intel AC '97 Audio Controller, driver version 5.10.0.7144 512 mb RAM ArmA English V1.06 Direct X 9.0 I'm guessing that my graphics card isn't up to snuff, but I'd like confirmation as I'm kind of stupid when it comes to hardware. Thanks for any help.
