The all new: Ask a moderator about the forum & rules
Sniperwolf572 replied to Placebo's topic in OFFTOPIC
Isn't that kinda self deprecating thing? Needlessly duplicating content and splitting the discussion? I'm not sure why would one do this? A dedicated A&M: D thread is already abiding by the "loose" rules, hell, you don't even have to show a picture, only express that you are working on it. Dedicated thread for things you work on is also easier for everyone to find, follow, bookmark, get notified of. Compare that to digging through a single thread dedicated to all kinds of things and following 5 discussions relating 5 different pictures from 5 different people. Am I missing something big here that warrants existence of such a thread besides "so I don't have to make a new thread"? -

If you could for a second ignore the fact that I'm a mod here, and consider me a neutral party that would like this to be resolved in an acceptable way for both parties. I'm asking this as I'm not in tune with what's been going on regarding this ever since the Sniper Skull's original thread was over. I might be taking crazy pills here and it might be a stretch, but maybe there should be an open discussion regarding this and an agreement on a set of rules and expectations for that kind of a thread that would benefit both camps. My personal opinion on this is that the current system is a bit off-putting because of the two-thread separation which makes it hard to have context and continuity. From what I can see, what was bad about the original threads, is that rules were established on the fly and were never "official", even when Max made the second thread and at that point he wasn't in a position to enforce them as he is now. Eventually, it was a pain thread for the mods because there was never an "official" set of rules and expectations like there is for most special threads on the forums now. Now, considering A&M: D allows all kinds of threads in for projects in all kinds of stages, I'm wondering if people have just altered their mentality and moved onto just making threads for their projects where feedback and discussion is about that specific thing compared to one thread where work can go unnoticed due to other "more popular" WIP's. Why would one compete for feedback anyway? If this is true, it would mean that even the older style format might not be as popular as it used to before, and raises my suspicion if we should even have those threads in any format. On a positive note, one of the good things that happened over time since the old threads were shut down is that community has taken a larger role in self-policing with the report button, which would probably, with clear rules, make hunting for offenders in such thread an easier job. While I'm not saying that this is something that's for granted to eliminate the problem for the mods, it's one of the things to consider. Take this as a suggestion for a way that you guys might resolve this issue in a civil manner. -
Controls Scheme & User Interface Feedback
Sniperwolf572 replied to HKFlash's topic in ARMA 3 - GENERAL
Whatever you want, hold breath, pace switch, move the laser/light/compass/watch to a more accessible key. Binding freelook to Mouse 4, for example, has been liberating for my ALT key which is now used for ACE menu, etc. First of all, I'm glad to hear presets are things that you plan to include. Hopefully you guys are considering to include an option to save your own preset that wouldn't need to be attached to an addon file, but rather maybe be a file in a specific folder in your ArmA user directory. I really don't see a reason to worry about the situation you described above, considering people have been coping with rebinding things to whatever suits them. I'd be more worried about giving the key binding screen a first class treatment. Like giving controls reasonable labels (car more right anyone?) and expanding it to cover the entire screen so you can see more controls and context without the need to scroll a small listbox and encountering the intimidatingly tiny scroll bar. -
Agreed, but it's there now, which is the important bit. We should not turn this thread into a Steam one, there's already one in the offtopic anyway. Let's stick to System Requirements please. :)

Nobody from BI said anything regarding Steamworks for ArmA3, you might be confusing it with DayZ, for which that seems to be the case. Regarding Steam and SSD's, they've recently added an option to create additional folders for Steam games on different drives. When you start to download a game, you now get a menu like this: It should be self explanatory.

Single Player Campaign/ Purpose and Expectations
Sniperwolf572 replied to PlacidPaul's topic in ARMA 3 - GENERAL
The thing is, A1 and A2 campaigns went off the both sides of the character story scale. As you say CWC and Resistance had character development. You did not necessarily had to relate to them to get the good story, but you witnessed some kind of development, which made all the difference. The perfect illustration of this is the minor things like cutscenes that showed Gastovski at the start of the game, the mission where Gastovski and Armstrong reestablish contact with the FIA and the Status Quo mission, things which didn't have to be done, but were excellent touches to introduce the characters and the state of things around them. With ArmaA1 campaign, they went too far with "You're just an unknown soldier in the scheme of things", where nobody around you developed any kind of character or familiarity. Every now and then you were pulled away to the mission select interface to pick your next mission starring a random nobody. ArmA2 campaigns overshot it on the other side of the spectrum, from get-go you had already developed characters who advanced very little past their initial setup that the writers had for them and the characters did what was expected of them. The first helo ride and advance towards Pusta established that everything interesting about the characters has already happened before the story even started and you should have read about it in the manual if you wanted to know who they are. Cooper also seemed more comfortable speaking Czech than his native language and considering we've been listening to his voice actor already it was kind of a strange experience for me. We'll see how ArmA3 characters will fit into that scale, but I expect that it will be similar to ArmA2 considering what we know of the story so far. -

Moved this to the appropriate place. As NeMeSiS says, image upload is disabled on purpose. There are plenty of places you can host your pics online, like Imgur and whatnot. -
SquadXML, and what is wrong with it in 2013
Sniperwolf572 replied to jerryhopper's topic in ARMA 2 & OA - SUGGESTIONS
Honestly, first thing that came to mind jokingly in the spirit of the thread was "XML is so 2001, JSON being the new sexiness". But to be serious for a second, I'm not saying it's hard to convert or parse, we've got plenty tools for that. Actual benefits being simplicity, less data to transfer, easier to process for the game client due to simpler structure (DOM orientation vs data orientation). I'm sure you can find more benefits if you dig into it. -

What's wrong with it? It needs to become squad.json! :D -
What, having problems with a game clearly set in distant future not having soldiers in ACU carrying M4's and fighting in deserts to the sound of AC/DC? Exactly. It's kinda funny to see people forget that this is a teaser for a product that's at least 2 years away. It's a pretty good showing considering that. If you really want to see a disappointing teaser for something less than 2 months away, check out the season 3 teaser for Game of Thrones.

It's a gift, I'm not asking for anything in return. I know what it's like to be in a similar situation and it sucks. You can pay me back by doing something nice for someone else around you. :)

I managed to scrape some money to buy you CO + DLC (Sorry, I couldn't find ARMA X on steam store). PM me your Steam details and I'll pass it along over that. Happy holidays.

ArmA::Log - Yet another beta crawler/notifier
Sniperwolf572 posted a topic in ARMA 2 & OA - BETA PATCH TESTING
Hi guys. Been working on this for the past week, and I think it's good enough for now to present it. What is it? ArmA::Log To keep it short, it's a web app built on PHP and CodeIgniter and an optional Chrome extension which will keep you updated on the new beta builds. Originally the idea was just to have the Chrome extension and have a place on the web to crawl and store latest beta build number and it's time of release, but it kinda got out of hand and turned into a little web app aswell. :p Planned features that are coming soon are an RSS feed so that you can, for example, get latest info in your Google Reader or something and a detailed view for each changelog stored. In case you're paranoid, the source code for the extension is available on GitHub. Apologies in advance if the site gets a bit slow, it's hosted on a shared cloud on PHPFog (hence a bit lengthy URL), maybe I'll find a better place for it in the future. Anyways, I'd love to hear what you think about it and if you've got any suggestions or more questions about it. -

ArmA::Log - Yet another beta crawler/notifier
Sniperwolf572 replied to Sniperwolf572's topic in ARMA 2 & OA - BETA PATCH TESTING
Sad news everyone, Due to PHPFog's impending removal from existence, ArmA::Log site will be shutting down it's operations (including the Chrome extension and RSS feeds). The site was running on PHPFog's free plan, which means that it will go down on 21st December 2012. I suppose that it's only appropriate that I share some very humble stats with you for the last year. I'm going to be running data backups soon, so if anyone is willing to offer no-strings-attached hosting services with Git deployment capabilities for this app, feel free to drop me a PM. -

Aye, don't get me wrong, down with any kind of DRM. But that's a discussion for another place.
-
@Baff1: Of course, that's your choice. I'm not going to be shoving digital distribution down your throat. I haven't used a CD/DVD/Blu-ray/whatever in quite a while, because these days I consider them a hassle. To each his own I guess. And I agree, disc distribution of anything tied to Steam or any other digital distributor/DRM is a hassle and probably unnecessary. They might as well just sell CD-keys for you to redeem or you could just buy it online in the first place. Maybe there's a place for it for those with harsh bandwidth caps or whatever. On the other hand, I doubt discs are going to be mainstay of the consoles either. Makers of the next-gen consoles are already considering omitting the hardware (which could lower the prices of the console, make them more compact) needed to read it. Plus you already have established digital distribution methods on consoles. I give disc drives in consoles maybe a possibility of appearing in the next gen if the developers take the conservative route, but the one after I can't see them present.

Steam is, amongst other things, a potential DRM solution for developers/publishers. Your thing with Skyrim happened because developers "fixed" it, not Valve. If I remember correctly, with the first patch, they integrated it into SteamWorks and the Steam Workshop. This isn't a global thing, for example, BI doesn't have this kind of protection on ArmA (All of them, probably other BI titles aswell) and off the top of my head, neither does Relic's Company of Heroes and I'm sure there are other publishers that do the same.
-
You don't believe that Steam is the thing for you, I respect that. Although I can't agree with you on your assessment of the design bit. How many license agreements do you read for every bit of software you buy/install? They're not the true small print saying "*yeah, we're lying about our product" so they don't get in trouble of false advertising. There are much worse and effective ways of swindling people for their money than establishing a proper worldwide distribution service.
-
As said previously, Steam defines the products you have access to through it's service as a subscription/license, even before the updated EULA was in effect.
-
Came across that way to me considering you agreed with the post above you who does say that. Apologies. There's always the perception that the customers are the small subset of those who are most vocal/visible and their traits are assigned to everyone indiscriminately. I'm sure you can see it even on these forums. For what it's worth, you can also see it in this thread. Majority of posts are by people who consider Steam to be the ultimate evil.
-
Seriously? You're going to put every Steam customer into disillusioned, disorder ridden or impatient brat basket? Physical stores are slowly heading toward extinction due to the internet speeds and it's availability and giving way to digital distribution, be it Steam, Origin, whatever. Unless we as a society manage to screw something up royally, it's the future.
