First of all your title is slightly misleading as this would not be multicasting (according to the standard). Secondly this would cause big syncronization problems. It would also increase the latency severly and you would need a TCP control-protocol that would increase the total bandwidth useage. A server is more likely to have higher upstream bandwidth than most DSL-clients anyways. Then we have the whole process of deciding who would be "super-clients" or "re-destribution centers" if you want. Add to that that upstream bandwidth is the least of the problems. You are referring to PPS (Packets per second) but these are not likely to be a problem in a game like Arma. Also unless you have a 486 with the included network card, running MS-Dos 3.11 there's no problems with the IP-stack either. The biggest improvement would be achieved by the DS-software supporting multi-cores. Also a DS programmed for unix would to some extent lower the CPU usage although I'm not familiar with how much calculation is needed by the DS. To my understanding unix architecture are better at handling network-traffic, stacks and so on, but I'm no linux guru so I can't back it up. Although p2p is great for utilizing bandwidth from peers with low upstream it's not very latency friendly. I know that Skype are experimenting with it but I'm not familiar with the results or progress. Either way, I don't see any gain in pioneering with this in latency-sensitive settings with an unproved and immature technology just to combat a problem that is not critical.

Another issue would be to force players to accomplish tasks in the given order and not spawn enemy before the task was ahead. This would ease the CPU load insted of having 200 AIs to calculate and update position of. I love the freedom Arma offers, but missionmakers aren't tweaking their mission at all, leaving the CPU overloaded and reducing the AI to static morons.

What about Coop? Is performance better there?

I got this bug on the briefing last night. Seems to happen more frequently on DS than hosted servers, but then again I play much more on DS than a hosted one so who knows.

I get this error on 1.02, 1.04 and 1.05 and I'm running XP with 1.5GB RAM and 7800GS with 768MB VRAM and -maxmem=1024. Where do we report these bugs? I know it's already been reported but it seems to me that BIS needs more data to crush this bug. I noticed the last time that one enemy was inside a wall and when I killed him, went out of scope, his body was gone and 2 secs later it crashed with the errormessage. However this was the first time this happened. Usually I'm merrily flying my chopper around when I get it (and I fly alot). Just before I crashed I noticed that my pagefile was 1.3GB (with little physical mem avail) and it's now 163MB so there might be a memleak here. I had been 14 hours in a MP mission (went to bed and came back), so I put my money on a memleak...

505 patch here: http://lurker.gjallar.no/Arma_Euro104Update105.zip Will keep it there over the weekend.

I've experienced that on Coop-mission Air Cavalry 2.0.2. I got a message of Cobra 2 down which my friend flew and when he flew to pick me up I saw it as a (flying) wreck with no rotor, burned out, and noone in cockpit. I was unable to get in the chopper. He had to fly back and repair it infront of me to solve it. At the same time my friend had rain pissing down while I had sun and blue sky. Edit: We were only 2 on the server...

Don't blame the game, blame your computer. but maybe i can help here. When you say your flying a Helicopter when the game crashes, to me that would point to your sound card or onboard sound. Somtimes the game depends on sounds that could cause a crash, or somtimes on graphic issues, its for you to determine this and when it happens. I say this because in ofp, a night time mission would cause me to crash to desktop (dark map=graphics card problem) or a certain sound from a launcher or gun would cause a crash (sound card= problem). Best way to determine if you are crashing by sound is, disable the sound and try again. Hi and thanks for the hint, but it doesn't happen only when I fly, it sometimes happens when I step out of or into a chopper. I'm not sure if it has happened in a "non-chopper related" situation on 1.04 though. Sometimes I get the cannot create memory surface, most times - nothing. Either way I had to turn off HW acceleration and EAX in the first german version to get proper sound at all. With those on, the sound was seriously mesed up. Another thing is that the frequency of crashes are much higher when playing on DS server than a hosted one. On a sidenote, I have a soundcard as well as a Logitech USB headset and I used both with same result. And playing for maybe an hour with no sound seems like pain. I'll wait for 1.05.

A different router won't help. We need to know what protocol and if applicable, what ports it uses. They might include the IP of the server in the payload making the clients trying to ping that address insted of the WAN IP which certainly would be a stupid way to do it since NAT is very common. However I have no indications of this, neither do I get anything in my firewall log, so I have no idea of how this works...

I have a 2.4Ghz server with 1GB RAM and with 10-12 players on, the dedicated server has an FPS of 3-6 which is far from impressive if this is the server "ticks".

I just hope it will make my game crash less often. I don't know how many millions of dollars I'm accountable for with all the gamecrashes while flying a chopper.

Suma: What kind of queries. I run the server on port 2302 and have opened TCP and UDP from 2302-2305 and I allow the firewall to be (ICMP) pinged. How does the browser estimate latency?

Personally I'm happy that Arma was released before it was ready cause I've been playing it alot. My long experience in beta-testing has made me very tolerant to crashes. However I can understand the frustration from "regular" players expeciting a somewhat stable game. On the plus side, I've gone from an average of 1 crash/hr in 1.02 to 3-4 crashes in total with 1.04 since this weekend. And I've had 3-4 6-hour sessions. I enjoy the game far too much to bitch about the instability for two reasons. There's too much bitching here already and I'm a fanboy.

My main problem with the cobra (apart from turning and screaming like a girl part) is that when I use the tail rotor to turn, it banks. With MH-6 or blackhawk, it turns - with cobra it banks. That doesn't seem right.
-
Turning 180 with the cobra makes me fly halfway over the map. Now I do a miniversion of the hammerhead where I pull up to drop speed, turn, dives down, then I scream like a schoolgirl when trying to level up and avoid smashing into buildings/the ground. Rinse & Repeat. Quite exciting really with an 80% successrate.

I sure hope this will be fixed. It doesn't make sense that a german key on a english version can't be set to english. I don't care who the publishers are, I bought the game and I'm not paying once more to get the game in english. If it's not fixed it will just promote piracy.

How can a 550W power be insuffcient? Did you keep your windows installation? If so, Arma prolly has the settings from your old gfx-card and is trying to run with those settings on your new card. I don't remember what file this is defined in but it is in My documents/Arma. Try renaming the folder and try again. Btw, shouldn't this be in the troubleshooting thread? Edit: Typo in PSU Watts

Fast Roping? Is it possible in ARMA

Just hit 0 0 1 without entering the map. They radio will appear in your top right corner. Well, not the radio itself but the commands. -
Chopper insertion/extraction/insertion

Is there a way to "record" flying so you can fly tactical into a hot LZ, record that and make the AI fly exactly the same? -
Me and a friend both has German 1.02 boxed set and we keep CTDing. Sometimes I get the memory surface thing, but usually not. We have different HW platforms and had a clean XP install before I installed Arma (went from w2k to xp due to Arma). Also my friend, after crashing, cannot reconnect to the server again but I can. I know this won't add much, but it's just a teaser for the real report. Where do I find arma.rpt? And do I get this as MP client (not server)?
-
I don't see how Arma ever can manage to have 50+ players on a server. The processors aren't getting faster, they're just adding more cores which the devs have said they're not going to add support for due to enormous restructure of code. I would like a decent server every day of the week, compared to persistant battlefield.
