Problem is that virtually all games will allow you to just OK into the game and then you get a big fat arrow saying "Kill guy". When they don't get that it's confusing so they run somewhere on the map, shoot and usually gets killed. There's no fun in that. That's why I want a better boot camp so the new players at least knows where to look.
-
I think the appeal is very much there, but we lose quite a few when they realize that they have to run >50m before they can open up, they're not really part of the potential anyways. But there are quite a few potentials who give up due to the steep learning curve and/or bugs. That is something that they could do something about.I don't know why BIS is so afraid of public betas, I think the main core of people playing the game now will buy it regardless. There are ofcourse those who were "tricked" into buying this game thinking Whoa! BF2 with more stuff in it! But after Arma1 and 2 I think they've learned their lesson. BIS might have burned some bridges there but they're more likely to come back in a free public beta and better release than no beta and yet another buggy release.

I would think a closed beta, followed by a public beta is the way to go. This would delay release but it would ensure a higher quality of the product once released. Also it would create some buzz before release and lots more people would test it. There wouldn't be a need for a demo neither. ---------- Post added at 01:10 PM ---------- Previous post was at 12:47 PM ---------- I don't see why everyone is jumping down Ace's throat. To reduce his posts to nonsense because of his linguistic skills doesn't really make you come across as captain of the debate team. Although I don't agree with Ace on his view of the graphics and I find them highly exaggerated it is a matter of performance issues. Obviously Arma2 isn't optimized to utilize high-end system - either because of poor drivers, poor threading by windows, or simply their own code. However this all boils down to the age old playability vs graphics. Some value graphics as a bigger part of playability than others. This is why there are still people playing OFP and why you see a ton of old classic games being re-launched. Now the biggest problem with Arma2 is the playability factor. Granted - we don't want someone holding your hand throughout the game but for new players it's quite an insane steep learning curve and you pretty much have to battle it through yourself. There are some excellent guides out there, but people don't want to study to be able to play the game and it's not like playing online on a public server will help you either. To dismiss them because they don't want to put in the effort most of us have, is why this game isn't more popular (well that and all the bugs too). I think BIS should focus more on their training missions and boot camp. Just handling the dozen of keys is tough, but tactics and strategy is a crucial part too, not to mention map reading, picking the right weapons for the mission, how to approach, how to exit, when to engage, when to run, etc. I think they took a step in the right direction with the Arma2 campaign where they pretty much showcase most of their features (I think we all loved Manhattan - apart from all the bugs), now they should hold the players hand to at least steer them in the right direction. Many gamers still won't like it and that's fair enough, it's a niche game. It wouldn't hurt making it easier for those interested and reducing the number of bugs which would really frustrate the new players to no end though.

Heh, you might want to change FPS to sim if you don't want to come off too redneck.

The link I posted earlier that said 30th of january, now says 28th february. :) http://cdon.no/spill/arma%3a_armed_assault_2-6969892

BIs never had penetration value in its damage model. As several people has said already, you can kill a tank with MG if you want because of this.

A2 no longer benefits from 5870 crossfire
rekrul replied to node_runner's topic in ARMA 2 & OA - TROUBLESHOOTING
Just a correction. The manufacturers states that even though you xfire more cards, you don't get access to the 2nd or 3rd card's memory bank so the memory available should be consistent, no matter how many cards are in use. Also, I don't know why. -

rekrul replied to node_runner's topic in ARMA 2 & OA - TROUBLESHOOTING
I get xfire to work (and I'm running newest drivers), but there's no real increase in FPS on my system. The only thing is that I can increase is the quality without any FPS loss, which I cannot do on when not running xfire. Also, even at high settings my GPU usage is rarely over 40% on either GPU. I'm currently running 1680x1050 with 100% 3D and 5k view distance. View distance is the only thing I really want, I don't care about the eye candy. I am intrigued by the post regarding the threads though as one CPU core is always higher than the others, but never at 100% so I'm not sure if there's a bottleneck there. (I'm currently running a Q9550 2.81GHz OCed to 3.4 GHz and 8GB RAM with 4GB RAMdisk.) Edit: My point was that I believe ATI has to optimize their drivers for full usage, but might be dependent on BIS when it comes to multi-threading. -
Music In Chopper
rekrul replied to warghost20's topic in ARMA 2 & OA : MISSIONS - Editing & Scripting
I've always wanted to make the chopper play external music, like in apocalypse now or battlefield vietnam. Yes it's a worn cliche - I know, but is it possible? -
The biggest problem ArmA has is that it is a niche-serie. And consoles are pretty mainstream, they're not ready for niches unless it's a 150MB game you can DL for puny monies.

Arma2 doesn't support multi GPU support unfortunately. However, I'm not sure it's BIS fault, it might be a driver issue. Edit: I have two 4890 or whatever, in xfire and there's no increase in performance. I can turn more gfx features on without loss in FPS, that's the only benefit... -
All big companies now focus their main development for the consoles. Just look at MW2 for instance. Consoles means less piracy, a bigger market than before, larger margins and the same HW for all users. It's simply more profitable to make games for consoles than the PC. That being said, I hate playing FPS games on the PS3.

Multiplayer lag/stutter on moving objects
rekrul replied to Snowwhite's topic in ARMA 2 & OA - TROUBLESHOOTING
I don't see why. It's not like sending packets takes a ton of CPU cycles and the server has to know where every client and AI is at all times anyways. The only timecritical data you need to send i x,y,z, direction and perhaps animation frame. The animations are already on the clients so no need to stream the soldier animations over. Other info like gear, etc, aren't really necessary for other clients except when he's dead and it's not timecritical info. -
Is it possible that he was hit by a truck or other vehicle? Do you know if he had any arguments with someone else in the camp? Perhaps he owes someone a lot of money? Consider calling in NCIS (Radio 0-8-3-2). As for the APC powering up again, it's the gunner moving his turret. Since the turret needs power from the engine to turn (it's not turned by muscle power but mechanics and engines) the engine automagically starts up to power the turret so you don't drain the battery and end up being the juiciest bullseye in history.

I think the point OP is trying to make is that a 2nd license should be cheaper. After all, he has already paid for the development of the game with the first DVD, now he just wants to pay for "permission" to let the other player join the same server. Although I see his point, I don't agree as it would be next to impossible to regulate this. Also: I believe several games (like left 4 dead 2, planetarion) offers a second key/game with the first purchase, but it's more of a marketing scheme than a "right".

Problem with First Aid Module in Multiplayer Mission, need help!

As a mini-hijack, in the mission I'm working on - I can drag and carry dead people, both friends and foes. Is this normal? -

Would it be feasable to eventually add unlimited grass?

Wait, what?! -
Would it be feasable to eventually add unlimited grass?
rekrul replied to mon_diesle's topic in ARMA 2 & OA - GENERAL
When you can count grass-straws from 800m and out I guess. -
True, the point is - how did it end up on their website? It's not like they're trawling through this forum and figures "hey, maybe the 360 comes soon. Let's photoshop something and put it up". They got this info from their distributor and again - it's not like their distributor is browsing these forums...

Ambient Combat Module
rekrul replied to mechastalin's topic in ARMA 2 & OA : MISSIONS - Editing & Scripting
Couldn't you just sync it to a higher ranking soldier that is grouped with the player-group and have him with 0% presence (or maybe even setCaptive)? -
Set a variable when chopper height is <3 m
rekrul replied to rekrul's topic in ARMA 2 & OA : MISSIONS - Editing & Scripting
Ah the isPlayer would surly save me a lot of headache! Yeah, currently I'm not focused on the MP-tweaking (which I fear and expect to be massive), that's "phase 2". ;) Currently I'm using both SOM and ACM which I predict will be trouble in MP. -

rekrul posted a topic in ARMA 2 & OA : MISSIONS - Editing & Scripting
How would I do that? In my script, I want to use this to know if he has "landed" (hovered) yet. Meaning if I order myChopper land "GET OUT"; and then change the variable, it would be changed before the landing has happend. I want to wait until people are starting to get out (or in) before changing the variable but how? (getHeight seems to be VBS2 only.) -

rekrul replied to rekrul's topic in ARMA 2 & OA : MISSIONS - Editing & Scripting
Thanks for your input guys. Part of my "problem" is that I want the pilot to be AI or a MP player so I try to take into consideration everything that can go wrong (heh). Right now, I'm thinking that if the heli was below 3m but not anymore, and still has cargo - it was a hot lz (if empty, it RTBs). The idea when a hot LZ is encountered to RTB and tell the rifle squad leader to pick another LZ. That's all fine, but when the trigger aborts the scripts, and then is re-triggered it seems to pick up where it left and at the same time launch another instance of the script which is really challenging. In the end, I want the player assigning LZ to make a tactical correct decision or suffer consequences (e.g. splitting up his team). As TJ said, these things require a re-structure of the script so I think I eventually have to cheat and make a flow-chart. :( On the other hand, I am making this mission to learn scripting (or editing in general I guess), so I doubt I'll ever release or even finish this one. :)
