    More accessible mission design

In my opinion I at least tried to be mature in my TWO posts. And it really seems that most of you didn't even read them (those who did actually posted something positive). And I'm not saying arma should be COD. I was just saying that those games are not so different after all. Okay, planning how to attack a town could be fun, but if it takes 30 minutes to walk to the other side and then get instantly killed and having to take the walk again -it's not worth it. I'd rather take the direct route to get straight to the shooting. I have school, work and a social life -I can't spend 3 hours on a simple mission. But that's why it is good that BIS has given us a chance to save before entering the battle. Has anyone of you played "range of death" for Arma? Or "Gargat Force" for OFP? Those were awesome campaigns. But those were made by people. If you repel people like those (and me) the series will only lose players. Having more players would mean more money for BIS and in the end you guys would get a better engine and continue developing ACE, etc... After all, casual players usually don't have time to make missions or mods, it takes loads of time. I should know (I used to be Epeli, and I made "Forced To War" for OFP). The guy who said that arguing in the internet is like competing in retarded olympics... I second him :D. Though I wasn't trying to argue, only present a new point of view. EDIT: Some guys posted pretty productive comments. You have my compliments! :)

    More accessible mission design

I quess I wasn't quite clear. I played Arma 2 demo when it came out. I downloaded Arma2 free a couple of months ago (after upgrading my computer, I propably won't be able to play Arma3 with this). I've also played loads of OFP/Arma, so I actually HAVE played these games. I also made and released an F-16 addon for OFP. And I once spent hundreds of hours making a campaign for OFP, so I'm not exactly a newbie either. Making cutscenes was a huge pain because of the OFP random system... But yes, I havent played the Arma 2 campaign. And I think sneaking in real life is very hard - anyone can see you from 100 meters.. And in real life people die at war. You can never look at every direction. And none of you commented on my idea of using teamswitch. But it was a nice move from bis to enable saving all the time. What I meant is that most missions involve playing as a special operative hunting terrorists. That means you have to check every corner to hunt down those 5 enemies in a single town. In ofp there were usually several squads of infantry in that town... And yes, it took me 5 minutes to make a town fight mission in ofp -I've propably played it 30+ hours... I ported it to Arma and will propably port it to Arma2.... I would still like to see those action packed missions in the campaign also, because my mission doesn't have briefing, radio chatter etc.. and I don't want to go through the trouble of doing those. But that missions proved that the engine is good for people like me, so why not try to tempt those also. We could have both kinds of missions. I think if the US ever encountered an equal enemy (russia, china) they would have fights with lots of soldiers instead of the terrorist hunting they now do. If I was completely happy with COD/BF2 I wouldn't be posting here. I definitely want a lot more realism than those games, just not that much. That's why I never liked the MP component of those games.. I want something that is in between of arcade and uber -realism. My father is one of the wisest guys I know, and he plays COD and BF2. He doesn't want to play games that involve thinking, because he has other hobbies to develop his mind, just like me. So don't call us kids because of that. In the end of my post I said there is a lot of hate in these forums. I've been reading these since 2008 and have had the impression that people like sneaking and hate everyone who thinks differently. I think most of you just confirmed my point. Of cource there were also polite answers. But not nearly all of them. So look in the mirror before calling others kids. I'm 23y.o. btw.

The greatest problem in the series is that one bullet out of nowhere can end your run and set you 30 minutes back. This is especially painful in Spec-Op -missions, where most of your time is spent running around just trying to avoid enemies. My friend told me that most missions in Arma2 where like that (I didn't buy the game, because my machine couldn't run the demo). This really didn't need to be a problem. What I would like to see are real war missions, where you simply assault a town with enemies and be done with it -no boring/frustrating sneaking around trying to avoid enemies.. Make it like Flashpoint. And based on the reviews, the plot even in Arma2 wasn't that good -so why couldn't bis just make EVERY soldier on your group PLAYABLE. That way, if one guy died, you could simply take control of the next soldier and the battle would continue. Anyway this engine isn't the best one for telling stories, because it adds a little bit of randomness to everything (adding to the game). I think this would attract more players -escpecially BF and COD -fans, but would maintain the realism in the series. Most people in this forum like the fact that you have to be extra careful and constantly on guard, but I don't. I prefer straight action. People like different things. And finally, it saddens and angers me to see how much hate there is on these forums -every time someone compares this game to BF/Cod/Crysis people tell him politely (looking down on him) to leave the forums and go play some other game. I truly loved Modern warfare 2 singleplayer and I can tell that almost all the things I loved about that game can be found from the Arma series -except the kick-ass mission design. Same applies to Battlefield-series. Bottom line: the engine is great for war , but it's being used wrongfully. Ps. I'm pretty sure there's someone in the community, who makes the kind of missions I just described :). But I still think if I pay for a game, it should already have those missions in it.

    Permanently zoomed out

I bought trackir couple of days ago. When I disabled the trackir zoom I got this same problem. Enabling it agin didn't help -when I center trackir the view goes to the zoomed out mode.

    Newbie and TrackIR questions

Hi! Just to make sure: are you saying it's possible to use TrackIR for zooming? Is it implemented so that if you move your head closer to the screen it zooms? Does this also work in arma? Is there something else it can do? (in addition to looking around and leaning) I'm planning on buying one, and would like to know what it can do. Thanks :)
  6. Hey c'mon! Not releasing would have been Duke Nukem forever - They have made propably three DNFs and not released a single one of them. So thank you for doing the right thing! This news made my Jaw drop! Downloading now. I tried out the demo while ago. I think it caught the atmosphere of the original OFP very well. I used to think ArmA wasn't that good-- that is, BEFORE I played CWR. :) If you ever make CWR for ArmA2 I don't think no-one will ever care if you use the same models and textures, as they are such high quality. I think it's about shaders these days. :P

    Grass

In my country we have only forests (thee trees haven't been cut down like in the rest of Europe), so all the grass I see is in the cities and has been cut... :P didn't get to see any grass even in the army, only trees In the ArmA mountains there are these rocky spots where there is no grass and then these green spots where there is grass.. Something like that could also be used in the fields so you could find a better firing position. Anyway, it's truly a pity that you can no longer use full auto.. But I'm very glad that BIS didn't go overly realistic with their weapon handling. In real life you couldn't shoot while standing.. Ps. BF2: Point Of Existence had grass that rendered very far away.

    Grass

This morning I played ArmA. All my teammates were shot dead and I was lying in the grass and AI was running around. They didn't shoot me. When I got up (to shoot) the AI nailed me down pretty quickly.. Okay sorry, this is pretty subjective.. I think we all agree that it's not possible to fire a weapon when in prone position, because the grass blocks your view. So I think it would be nice if there were grassles patches (or patches where the grass is shorter) all over the fields so you could fire a weapon when In prone position. Like in the mountains. Also I'm not sure if in real world grass grows as tall as in ArmA... This is kinda a pain in the ass because the grass is everywhere. I really do love the Full-auto firing mode And for those interested in Hardware rendering: Someone was talking about hardware and that reminded me... http://developer.nvidia.com/docs/IO/8230/BatchBatchBatch.pdf 3D cards are getting more and more powerful all the time (more triangles), but processors aren't (not so much more batches). So efficient Batching becomes crucial in any game. But couldn't all the grass be rendered in one huge batch, thus taking full advantage of the growing capabilities of the 3D hardware? I think that in no time 3D cards will be powerful enough to render pretty grass at long distances... I didn't know you could tweak the grass draw distance in Arma. Wich file, wich line?
  9. Peter_Bullet

    Grass

I think that's wrong. In fcy2 you would still notice the grass in 300 meters. Watch the Arma2 helicopter videos: the terrain would look a whole lot different if grass was rendered. Think about real life. There definitely is a difference even far away. But could a shader be written to put some noise and motion blur to make the terrain look grassy? You are right that FCY2 was designed for lower view distances. I meant that they could increase the grass view distance for Arma2. @bravo 6 Yes, I've been reading the Dev blog. Yeah, they talked something about polygons and area over there, but in the videos the grass only renders few meters, so it doesn't look like BIS has done anything about it. I think it looks hideous. And have you noticed that the camera is always very low, as to hide this awful transition? If the grass would render very far away, only then would I start caring about making it prettier with different colours. edit: looked at the images at the dev blog (it has been a few years since I read the article), and the grass rendered pretty nicely. But I think the draw distance is lower in the videos. Well, we'll see...

    Grass

I think this deserves its own topic! In my personal opinion graphics in Arma1&2 are so great you wouldn't even care if they looked better. But... compared to this the grass looks astoundingly terrible. That's why I think the grass is an important deal. It looks very detailed up close, but in 10 meters it just fades away, and the contrast looks just awful. In farcry2 the grass was very modest (wich I didn't mind one bit), but It would be drawn infinitely far away. I think same sort of solution would profit Arma2 (atleast increase the grass draw distance). Also some sort of impostor technology could be developed for grass very far away.. (though I'm not sure I can think of an algorithm for this) So, what do you think? Very nice grass with very low view distances, or very simple grass with higher view distances?

ArmA maps are TOO large for public servers

A guy PM:d me a link to some smaller wafare missions with only few towns. That was the first time I heard from such a mission. I haven't seen anyone play those missions on a public server. So that guy's attempts didn't help me. Anyway, I have been repeating the same points for a long time, and so has the other side. I don't think there is much more to add to this discussion. Okay okay: I am an immature kid who plays CS all day long on his computer and uses words like "OWN" "FAIL" "EPIC" "RETARD" "FUCK YOU" all the time, like you have seen from my posts (are you happy now, everyone?) -> That means that being such an immature kid I'm not prepared to take a long walk to engage the enemy -> that propably also means that I'm too lazy to search for new missions, and so is my whole breed! Ps. I'm almost 21. Pretty pathetic, right?

ArmA maps are TOO large for public servers

Sorry but I think they 'fucked' it, because ArmA2 is going to be as fast as ArmA1/OFP. Yes. OFP/ArmA are slow compared to mainstream. That's fine by me. But apparently what you are wishing is something like 100 times slower than OFP. I just wish MP was more like SP. I can walk a few minutes, but traversing hours on an empty map is just plain boring! edit: I can't make an MP map, because I have only one computer, so I wouldn't be able to test it.

ArmA maps are TOO large for public servers

Agreed! I'm not willing to take 20+ hours to make a mission and then months promoting it so that people would start playing it. I want BIS to do it for me. Anyway they don't even have to promote it. Linear story based mission making in OFP was a huge pain: nothing ever played out the way it was supposed to be. OFP added randomness to everything, wich is good for gameplay but hell for developement -> The only feasible option is to make non linear missions -> Mission makers must have patience and will for complete open-ness -> They present mostly those people who want huge scale (that requires patience). But that doesn't mean everyone who plays OFP/ArmA is like that. Btw. I'm a hobbyist programmer -> If I don't like warfare, that doesn't necessarily mean I'm an immature, short-tempered kid. No-one has said that anyway, but I kinda have the impression some people here think that way: mature, polite posts saying that I have got the whole Idea of Arma wrong and that CS is the game for me. (I might be a little paranoid here. If so, sorry for that.) Could you please stop mocking CS? I think nobody here compares ArmA to CS. They are completely different. If I say I want action, that doesn't mean I'm willing to go all the way to CS. (I have played it only few times and didn't like it anyway) I think people demanding bigger maps are being unreasonable. You haven't got what this game is about - ArmA isn't for fixed wing aircraft, but I can hardly think of anything else that would require a bigger map. Even exploring the whole map would take months! I think that's enough scenery for anyone. And let me be clear: when I said "too large maps" I meant "too large missions".

ArmA maps are TOO large for public servers

Yes. I thought BIS published their version of warfare and now everyone plays it. Your post cleared things out pretty good. Thank you! I think it's also the servers' fault that they run huge warfare maps with no players. And let's face it: real warfare is boring. Mostly it's just guarding and waiting and moving from place to place. There are many unrealistic aspects in ArmA, but WHY WHY WHY do you have to complain about them? The game wouldn't be playable if it was truely realistic. I don't like arcade, but I sure like to shoot at people (or aliens)! I played this Berzerk map the other night. It was really like mini-warfare. Just 32 guys in the area the size of dolores.. well it still wasn't enough. I think it would be great if every player could have an AI squad in berzerk. That way we would get some great online combat. Think about those arma missions where an assault takes place. There are maybe 50 units per side assaulting a city. But I still think that BIS could include some small Battlefield missions with the boxed arma2 (like Berzerk with AI), so we wouldn't be completely at the mercy of the mission makers. Those guys who make missions are propably those guys whol love über realistic warfare. Not those who want IA.

ArmA maps are TOO large for public servers

Read my previous posts. In short: on public servers there are only fullsize warfare games with 16players. -> I can't really choose another mission. It doesn't help making my own version if the whole community doesn't know about it. If BIS made a smaller version, everyone would know about it and play it. And yes, ArmA is a very flexible platform. I am talking about the missions BIS is going to include with the game. NOT about the engine. After all, the missions play a crucial role in ArmA. edit: Naaww... this is hopeless. The real flaw is that no-one wants to play ArmA on a public server. I quess I should find a group that's willing to let people try MP with them.
