  1. Name a better Milsim than ArmA:115?

    Apparently, OFP.

There was another WW2 one, but I forget the name.

ofp doesn't actualy provide and new features over arma, i think it's nonsense and jealousy that fuels this ofp is better than arma myth. The only problem with arma is it's computer requirements, which has nothing to do with gameplay. You just cant expect a computer with a p4 to perform with modern games anymore.

  2. Lets add some trails! With this amazing vegetation and area why not add some hiking trails or patrol trails through the woods and hills. They would make great battle areas and ambushes. The possibilities are endless for mission makers when you add trails, especialy the immersion level. I haven't seen any trails mentioned for arma2.

I mean, couldn't you just imagine, your patroling or hiking on a trail through the woods and you come in contact with hostiles. You flee to the sides of the trail and take cover, maybe behind some tree or boulder. The micro-ai kicks in and your under suppresive fire. The cracks of the bullets rush by you through the tree's.

I'm getting a little carried away, but this realistic element seems to be missing. pistols.gif

    EDIT: http://www.armedassault.info/ftp/pics/news/pics1/ArmA2_ingame7.jpg

This is what really got me thinking about trails, i sort of imagined him walking on one and realized, what if that was no longer imagination.

  3. I just hope its as good as the orignal ofp, cant get enough of that.

It can't be even half as good if the campaign is solely based around some lame razor special force team.

OFP was totally different, you were just thrown out in the unknown and trying to survive. ArmA will be just doing special operations behind enemy lines. Nothing exciting. Just accomplishing missions after another. Yay.

    WTF ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT?!!?!??!

  4. I'm not sure if this statement is correct. The world size in meters is not limited, but the cell size is.

Also, big maps like to crash arma, because the memory gets devoured.

What they need is a better way to allocate vm. The physical memory in ArmA is for the current game data and the viewdistance. The map data and locations is loaded into the vm. If arma is crashing it's because of poor communications between the pm and vm. So, thats what needs to be further upgraded to have bigger maps.

  5. My intention with this thread was not to debate whether or not the floating zone is a good feature. Like I said, I'm all for the option to turn it off if the server decides not to force it. The more you can customize the game to your own tastes - the better.

What I am asking however, is for an optional setting on my privately owned server that can force the floating zone to be turned on. It's my own server, so I should be able to set whatever rules I want it to have - whether that means it only has one mission, runs 4000 obscure addons, has no crosshair or forces a floating zone.

If you don't like this, then you are free to play on any other server you'd like. I don't see people complaining about clan servers because they are locked and therefore limits the server you can play on. Or servers running addons because it makes "finding the right server harder".

Simply put, it's my server, and I should be able to do what I want with it. I'm not saying every server WILL use this feature, I'm just saying some servers might - should they want to.

Be careful what you say, the socialists will take you to a crazy center.

  6. I never played OPF but I did play ARMA when it first came out and I will say this. BIS needs to change the name to anything else. Even just calling it "Armed Assault".

Number 1, Arma is a really bad name. I don't care if it's a latin word, it's just a really poor name. A lot of games are based on impulse purchases. With a name like that, you'll get very little.

Number 2, Arma will always be associated as a bad brand, since Arma 1 was damn terrible when it came out and still is pretty bad. When a lot of people I know think of Arma, they think of AI supersoldiers and pinball tanks.

Number 3, It's a bad name! I know I said that before, but what the hell was your sales experts thinking? Do you even have any?

Yeah, and it's more correctly said OFP...

But whatever, just being overcritical. tounge2.gif

  7. This has already been discussed, arma2's "landmass" will be larger than arma1's "landmass". 400sqkm is the size of the entire sahrani map. Put down a rectangular marker and you will see. If you scale the landmasses correctly, arma2's landmass is larger than sahrani's.

  8. I'd love for BIS to give us the honest system specs used to make these vids.

I wonder why they don't approach one of the amazing sound-mod makers and use those sounds. I think the community would respect them more for using great community-made sounds rather than sticking to some of the really bad ones you can hear in these vids. There'd be no shame in it..

You know, maybe if they include an ingame addon list for sounds it won't be such a problem. I really think people have differen't preferences for shooting sounds. However, they said that soldiers will have a ton of individuals sounds for them. Like gear and stuff.

  9. RE: lack of rivers.

According to Mr. g-c's post here, and judging by the google earth image, the coast in the Arma 2 island is actually the Elbe river in the actual terrain. The east bank was simply changed into an ocean and the west changed to include beaches.

So, the only real river in the general area was turned into the coastline, somewhat explaining the lack of rivers in the rest of the terrain.

But there is going to be lakes!

  10. This is for the people who think arma will be brown.

edit: So basicaly, it varies greatly. I think this has to do with their new lighting system and their new volumetric system. It has an affect on the weather like real life. When their is no clouds or anything like that, it's pretty clear. When their is clouds it can be grey, blue, and brown. I've seen this in real life. Don't forget they have a more accurate weather system. Infact, there was a independent review on arma2 by someone and he said that you can almost feel the rain coming in, that you could tell that the game was very simialer to arma but it was very differen't at the same time.

  11. The map looks a little bit small too. Like a big park, walking distances.

The total map size in ArmA1 was 400sqkm, the total map size for chenarus is around 225sqkm. Considering that the map in arma1 was mostly water and the new map is mostly land, the actual playable landmass in ArmA2 is actualy larger. Thats why I believe the scale is much more realistic in ArmA2.

  12. Okay, if ArmA 1 or 2 was to have truly realistic sound, this is what would happen, according to my experience shooting firearms:

After the first shot your ears would ring.  With a few more shots, the ringing in your ears would continue and sound would begin to get muffled, almost like you added cotton into your ears.

The U.S. Army protected us against hearing loss by making us wear ear plugs when we went to the qualification range, but when a firefight begins, how many soldiers shout to the enemy, "Wait a minute!  I've got to put in my plugs!"

    Thoughts?  Experiences?

That depends on how close you are. I went on a simulative patrol. A person had shouted out enemy target at the 3 and had an m4 and began firing. I was about 15-20meters away and the sound isn't that bad. At the time I didn't know it was fake though, and it could have been my adrenaline that helped me cope. All I know though is my ears weren't ringing, and I wasn't really thinking about how loud it was.

  13. Hello BIS,

Surely I am impressed with the cinematics of the lastest videos, I am impressed with choices for content you made ,

the complexity of the graphical representation is quite good, but I wish you guys could given time tweak the bloom/"white-surface glow" graphical effect.

It is too strong and quite often in my opinion used on surfaces and under angles where such effect shouldn't be at all. I mean glowing cows, thats slightly strange,no?

I am no fan of graphical perfection in every tiny detail, nor will this be the any reason for me to buy/not buy this product,

but that "white surface glow" is seriously irritating on the eyes. Not strainful as your implementation of HDR,but still irritating.

Therefore since I know ohara at least reads this forum sometimes, if there is any chance to improve this, thank you very much.

Obviously if it would require some serious work,I rather have all that work go into AI,Squad Command Interface(and UI in general),Armor Warfare,"Saving in Multiplayer",Script commands.

On a different topic: Mortars and BM-21s? Are we seriously going to get proper artillery(different from scriptillery you know)? That would be impressive to say the least.

I like how the graphics are in the video, i just think it needs a slider for people like you.
