Maybe, but something needs to keep them pointing stowards the person, so the affect stays their. Thats why speedtree came to mind. I'll give a conan screen (I think this is unedited):

I don't get why people don't want pretty mountains in the distance. Sure, you cant reach them, but I rather pretend there is something out there besides infinite land. Don't be afraid of art, it makes the game look nice.Anybody else like me try to make the endless flight to the moon in ofp? Â

but then again, what about Flying aircrafts? will they suddenly stop from a hit into a skybox if reached? Â

That's the whole point, the skybox of the moon is more logical than a skybox on sides that prevent you from maneuvering in game area.
No, a skybox can be set to be unreachable. That means they won't run into an invisible wall. If you want to try something simailer. Try playing avgani iraq. You can fly as long as you want over infinite land, now just imagine a mountain skybox at the end and you got arma2's structure, we think.

I had this idea that just exploded into mind. What if a lowres 2d speedtree was implemented for grass at a distance (out of the radius of detail) then ofcourse at extreme distances become flat like we have now? That could solve the problem of the ugly texture that happens at the end of arma2's nice grass! This probably won't be possible to implement at this stage, but maybe a hacker project with BIS's approval? I've only got basic hacking skills so people good at it would be needed. We could start a prototype with ArmA.BIS uses their in/house tree program called LINDA
I know, but involving the speedtree library for grass at a distance would improve the quality a littlebit. And i'm talking about something simialer to the 2d system used in conan and counterstrike source. Where a 2d picture of a bush or grass clump follows your point of view, giving it the illusion of some depth but having only a 2d graphical load on the gpu. If we implement this at a distance for some time we could improve the gameplay as well.

Well, I think they should add another walking animation. The new one should give more of a fast paced hiking style of walking while holding the rifle. Maybe a whole new mode? I think some more modes would be nice. There should be differen't levels of safe, such as relaxed safe (what we have now for walking animation, maybe add option to put gun on back) and patrol safe (fast paced hiking style walking with gun)

I will start a NAPA clan, we will shout "Wolverines!"
EDIT: Who wants to join my clan?

"What rpg do you play?"
"ArmA2...", munch munch munch
"WTF IS ARMA2?!"
blooopfff, "ArmA2? THE BEST RPG IN THE WORLD!"
"What sorts of spells are there in ArmA2?"
"Mostly just bullets, and some grenades, aircraft and tanks have the big stuff..."
"What kind of crazy rpg is that?!"
"A realistic one"
"Wait, so this is FPS, RPG, and Simulator combined?"
"Yep"
gets home, burns world of warcraft in fireplace, installs ArmA2

Arma 1.15b!

My expectations are that ArmA 2 will have greater hardware requirements but will be more efficient. Â I doubt any computer in the world will be able to run it on max settings when it comes out, as with ArmA, but you'll get more bang for your buck in terms of minimum requirements and that sort of thing. Â So, the minimum requirements for ArmA 2 will only be a 1500 dollar computer instead of a 2000 dollar computer.I can max out arma 1. I expect to max out arma 2.
Could you do that when it first came out?
That's a foolish expectation in my opinion since everything in ArmA 2 is more complex than ArmA 1. Â I have no idea what kind of computer you're running, but at the time when ArmA came out, no computer system that existed could max out ArmA (or so it was often said on these boards). Â It has been optimized quite a bit, however.
ArmA2 most likely will be more efficient than the original arma, giving computers (assuming you have a dualcore minimum) that didn't do so well with ArmA1 decent performance with ArmA2. I currently can max out ArmA1, i'm expecting to max out ArmA2 and to be able to put more units on the map without a drastic performance decrease. Be aware that my computer had cost $750 dollars, i'm reusing the monitor.

What I find interesting is high command must rely on the AI to solve complex problems as a group on their own. Otherwise it would be kind of pointless wouldn't it?

If ArmA2 contained builtin support for ACE rucksack and stamina system, it would prevent newcomers to getting into ArmA2 'the wrong way'. Some people don't like ACE stamina system because 'they are used to' being able to run like mad forever with a ton of gear. If they could never get used to it, it wouldn't be an issue and everyone would accept it since it IS more realistic anyways. Also I think I've read that ArmA2 would have realistic ballistics. If this is the case, you can't have sniper weapons without being able to compensate for this drop, by means of adjusteable sights. I played sometimes using NWD_Scopefix and ballistics without adjusteable sight, the M24 became unuseable. Also with the M107 I had to aim well into the 'bold' part of the reticle, completely off.
ArmA2 should seriously consider builtin support for many things ACE brings to us: Backpacks, stamina system, adjustable sights (different for grenade launchers, AT launchers, handgrenades, sniper weapons, and cqb backup sights precicely as done in ACE), ballistics (incl rocket ballistics), adjustable gain on the NVGs, backblast and overpressure effects, dispersion (included overheating based), crew served weapons, and magazines system. Weapon resting if high sway is done, but should be made better by default (not sure how though
). As for roundcount I don't mind going into gear menu and examine each magazine separately, even colorcoded. But no to excact round count as is shown on the videos today. They did have stamina, it just wasn't very good stamina simulation. You couldn't run like mad forever, you'd slow to a jog.

It's been said by BIS that an 8600gt will probably let you run ArmA2 at medium with great performance (assuming you have a dualcore), so i don't know why people are so scared.

I had this one time in ArmA where I was in a house and I eventually ran out of ammo, and I notice there was a soldier out front the house, and there was nothing I could do, cept run outside and commit suicide...I know it would be very rare that you would use a knife, but if it's so rare then whats the problem? It's just something good to have in such a moment, rather then walk up to them and say shoot me .
shhh, i might be able to script a knife simulator. It won't be pretty though...

Don't worry gonk, i'm sure new distributors will eventualy take over.

Baff1, i don't think you get what i said at all....The example with the Video encoding was just an example to show you what difference a multicore optimized piece of softwae will benefit from such a system.
In a short sentence:
Arma2 will be multicore optimized so you can await a better performance on multicore systems, period...
Just a actual statement by them: http://translate.google.com/transla....&u=http
Quote[/b] ]What is the recommended configuration for Arma 2?Recommended configuration can be found on the official Web site arma2.com.
A very important condition for the smooth running of this game will be multi core processor. D A good image can be computer set Alza Ruby, which we had this year in October to play the game journalists at an event ARMA2 Boot Camp.
Now got it?
I got what you said.
But since it isn't goin to max out your later day single core processors in the first place, people using multiple cores won't see any detectable difference in the game.
They may well find if they run a diagnostic that their CPU is using less overall % of it's power to compute the game, but the game's performance itself will remain visibly unaffected since both will be running at under 100%.
While in your chosen example of software, what you say is indubitably true, the same is not true of ArmA.
You will get the exact same performance as on a single core CPU.
Multithreaded or no, this is not a CPU intensive software. The CPU is the very last part of your system you should reasonably expect to be bottlenecking in 3D rendered game.
The software hasn't advanced a whole lot, in calculation terms, from when it first launched for a 400MHZ specced machine.
It's most certainly is not to be compared with video encoding in terms of CPU usage.
Console CPU's are very weak indeed compared to PC CPU's, single cored or otherwise.
Any console game of this complexity will greatly benefit from multi-threading.
In fact it will probably require it to function effectively.
ArmA 2 will be a scaled down version of ArmA, not a scaled up one. It's going to work on consoles.
They must play to the lowest common denominator (which in this case is more than powerful enough to recreate the not-so-many computations a game like this demands of the PC).
ArmA2's graphics will be better, it will support multiple cores, and it's general processing is much more efficient. What are you talking about? Look up the new linda, and read the wiki article on this. ArmA2's going to have parallax occlusion mapping, ArmA2 will be much more advanced than arma1.
-
I asked them the question in the radio interview, and they said arma2 will have better performance than arma1. As long as you have at least a dualcore and at least and 8600gt graphics card or above.
I also have to ask why do people want a new game to require the same hardware? You should expect to have a small upgrade for a sequel
-
That said a single core at 3.0ghz would barely be able to run arma2. They said you would have to have a p4 overclocked to 4.0ghz+ to get decent performance. Which leaves me with the impression that a 2.4ghz dualcore would still kick it's a**.

I think they should put in something that makes your gun and arms push down if your gun is starting to collide with a wall. That way when you spin around your gun will already automaticaly starting pointing down, and when you point out a window it stays pointing out. This makes it so you don't stop simply because your gun makes you, and instead points down.
-
I don't think that you don't like the controls. I think you just don't like the clunkyness of the animations when your using the controls. Such as moving around in houses and trying to seek cover.

I like HDR, as long as it's not overdone.

How about coop pvp?

speedtree for distance in arma2
in ARMA 2 & OA - SUGGESTIONS
Posted
Do they mean for the tree's? I'm just talking about distant grass. The image shows how the grass at a distance has some volume appearence to it, unlike arma's flat texture.
