Suggestions that would make Arma II / AO more popular
Pulverizer replied to polar bear's topic in ARMA 2 & OA - SUGGESTIONS
I bet some people can even stick an icicle in their rear-end without making a funny face, but that doesn't mean the majority of people ever will. -

Ugh... FPDR it's not like the "takistan" name has any marketing value. Especially in the OFP RR audience. RR will probably not be bought by many Arma fans, right? They happen to be the only people on Earth who would give a shit what the fictional country name in some video game is. -

I beg to differ. I think it's a niche product because of: 1) Unplayable performance on low to mid-range gaming PCs on most game situations 2) Bugs and CTDs 3) Warping units in MP 4) Stupid AI that has zero iniative for anything else but getting their ass smoked 5) Clunky and unintuitive controls Absolutely NOT because it's too "realistic" or "hardcore". It isn't, unless you argue that CTDs and single digit framerates make the game more hardcore. -

Making the game more accessible (ie, better-designed, not less-complex) wouldn't make any difference because you always need to play on closed servers to play serious MP anyway. And FYI, Arma2:OA already has Steam achievements: But they arent implemented yet (or are broken by bugs). -
Players should NEVER have to install add-ons
Pulverizer replied to polar bear's topic in ARMA 2 & OA - SUGGESTIONS
Other games that have autodownload of maps and mods don't seem to care about any of these imaginary problems. Downloading maps and mods has been integrated in countless online games ever since QuakeWorld, and it's always optional. If the server owner doesn't have a separate web server for redirecting the downloaders or cannot afford the bandwidth, then he can simply choose to not set up the autodownload. Doesn't mean all the other servers should suffer without the feature because of him. -

Haters gonna hate. Especially the hardcore BIS fanbois, because CM stopped publishing BIS games but kept the OFP name. It's not "epic fail" if it's profitable, and obviously it is since they are making a sequel. Even if it's bad in some "combat simulation" nerds' perspective, CM probably doesn't give a fuck as long as it makes money and the players who will like it neither. I think it sounds okay. It's good that they have a more defined direction. OFP DR felt like they couldn't decide if they were making OFP, Delta Force or COD4. Who knows, maybe they can make a more cohesive and playable game this time. -
Hi. Here's the campaigns I had: http://pulverizer.pp.fi/ewe/missions/wgl_sp_campaigns/ And some WGL CTIs with the required addons (quality may vary): http://pulverizer.pp.fi/ewe/addons/wglcti.zip A common problem with WGL CTIs is that the broken buildings don't look broken, which makes destroying a base a bit more difficult for human players. You could fix that by replacing the buildings in the mission with MFCTI addon buildings.

Free view and Aim (infantry only)

Great idea! Reminds me of "align legs with torso" and "align torso with legs" buttons in ye olde MechWarrior games. -
Yeah, I also took a look at the OFP stats site to find out which servers might still have them. I found the 0.91 pack just now too from web.archive.org.

I was talking about the concensus that the players with a healthy amount of cynicism had. Not about the official PR bullshit in magazine interviews or press-releases. If you believed all PR that blindly you could probably argue that COD:MW2 was supposed to compete with Arma too. -

O RLY? Stop the press! I thought it was common knowledge well before its release that even OFP DR 1 was never even supposed to be a competitor to Arma. I recall calling that myself too, that Codemasters aren't in the business of making games for small niches. -

I find the obvious downsides worth it. JIP does not help me when there's no mission being played I would consider worth JIP'ping into. I'm not suggesting Arma should have JIP removed or criticizing BIS here at all, so don't get all defensive over nothing, people (I do find it very cute though). I'm just saying that I personally wouldn't mind if Codemasters didn't add JIP for OFP Red River. -

That's not what I mean by "auto-downloading". It's an external program which downloads all missions from a moderated repository. It's more akin to running Yoma addon sync or Six updater, only, it downloads a mission collection instead of addons. If there was thousands of missions, like the original OFP... you'd download all of those, instead of the 1 you needed. That would be completely useless say I wanted to play a stupid mission I threw together in 5 minutes in the editor, with a friend. -

Oh wow, flamebaits, trolls and patronizing... sometimes you guys still manage to amaze me. ---------- Post added at 10:43 AM ---------- Previous post was at 10:39 AM ---------- That was my point exactly. ---------- Post added at 10:45 AM ---------- Previous post was at 10:43 AM ---------- Are you familiar with the word "automatically"? I was commenting on how you have to download OFP DR missions by hand, which is bullshit. -
You might be a really kick ass soldier and a talented programmer, but you're still not equipped to comment on how to improve the controls if you don't even learn how they work in the first place. A general "make controls better, kthxbai" helps fuck-all. Do you think BIS didn't think of that? The controls are complex because the game is complex. It's not easy to simplify them any further.

Or whatever the latest version of Cleanrock's battlefield mission was. I could only find 0.9 on the servers and google only finds dead links.

The worst thing is that you have to install the missions by hand, instead of having the game download them automatically when you join a MP game. I for one appreciated the lack of JIP. It makes for more organized gaming by grouping the players before the mission begins and gives them the chance to discuss about it. Also, it pretty much forces more focused and realistic missions (ie, not stupid pseudo-rpg missions with infinite respawn that last 10 hours real time). -
Just like you do now: By centering your view. TrackIR kind of locks on softly to the center position when you're near it, so it's easy to hold there. But sure, proper collimated sights would be very welcome too, instead of the crayon-painted sights some jerk draw directly on the HUD glass.

No. That feature was only added in Armed Assault.

Dedicated server invalid texture aspect ratio.
Pulverizer replied to Arska134's topic in MULTIPLAYER
Some addons use weird texture aspect ratios like 1024x64 and something silly like that. These cause the game to crash on some video cards/OS. You just have to find what addon it is (ded server output should tell you the exact texture file name) and then fix the problem. FFUR is not designed multiplayer compatible AFAIK. -
Yeah... When you think about it, what kind of a "combat simulation" doesn't feature post-mission playback of the events? A very half-assed one. All sorts of flight, racing and tank simulations always feature a recording function. Also, FPS games have featured demo recording ever since Wolfenstein 3-D, and online multiplayer FPS games have featured demo recording ever since there was online multiplayer FPS games (Doom, QuakeWorld). It's not like they would be bringing a military grade function to a consumer product or anything, which is usually the argument against VBS functions. ---------- Post added at 03:18 PM ---------- Previous post was at 03:15 PM ---------- There are user-made spectator scripts. And a free camera mode is in by default, you start it like this: player exec "camera.sqs"
-
Do you jump into a fighter jet sim and expect it to have the standard WASD controls too? While I agree that the controls could be improved, Arma2 is not a game for casual gamers. Even if the controls were completely transparent, they will find nothing but more and more things to simplify until we're left with another Call Of Duty game.

People Hacking the Server? How can we Tell?
Pulverizer replied to xPaveway's topic in ARMA 2 & OA - MULTIPLAYER
At least it would be a lot less funny for them if they couldn't anymore spawn whatever objects, bombs, vehicles or soldiers they please with no fear of getting caught. And it would probably be relatively easy to make such logging options. The real problem is that a cheater could make an innocent player look quilty by making his client send the commands (the same way they run the text commands etc on your client), so admins who don't understand the scripting too well might ban wrong people.
