There are PVP ladders but rare. OCB has made a few PVP ladders in and around the Australian communities. They would be awesome, but convincing them is another matter.
They are too super 'tacticool' to realize the tactics of training are not the techniques of reality.
I'd love to see a huge clan versus clan battle because clans tend to be a place that hones their own individual style and way to play, it's interesting to see one pitted against another. I think we need a gladiator ring...
+many. OGN ran a ladder for a few years when there were multiple clans under its baner and if I remember correctly there were even some OGN v OCB battles back in the day. Crap tins of fun.
And I hope to see something like it again.

...... A person unfamiliar to the game would say: "Why on earth can't I select my weapon with the number keys above the letters? This is so annoying!", and then probably ragequits.Coz this old fanatic still uses them to boss about his cannon fodder and will rage quit if he can't.
(sigh) I'll just keep my fingers crossed till release and hope that something makes its way back in.

I just don't understand where all of these resources from the influx of purchases have went if features are getting cut.Guess a few people are thinking the same, but remember most of those sales would have been 1/4 of the original RRP or less and problems aren't automatically solved just because you have money in the bank. They need to be confident they can provide the solution in the given time frame.

No 3D editor, like what? Going to hazard a guess and say it's a ploy to keep the VBS feature set a step above A3, a bit annoying, but we'll survive as long they keep the community solution pipe open.
What realy pissed me off even more than the 3d editor:
Q: Will the AI no longer be able to see through grass, and how will the grass be displayed in multiplayer?Dan: Unfortunately, there's no progress on this. Staying the same so far.
Because we all want it fixed.
Q: Can the player steal the uniforms of other dead players in multiplayer?Dan: We decided to limit this only to uniforms affiliated with a player's side. Although we were considering allowing the player to don any uniform at the start of development, it appeared that such generality would bring some very complex issues with AI and multiplayer rules. Also, it is against the Geneva Convention.
Because they showed it in thier vid and it was COOOOOL! So no-more dreams of sneaky pete stealth missions folks. If their thinking is truly being defined by the Geneva Convention then this GAME is likely to be as dry and boring as a military manual and I wouldn't expect some of the other wished for improvements such as gun totting women.

^^ A cheaper way to go might be a cache ssd, crucial offer a couple that self install on existing drives saving some trouble. But you'd have to be accessing your ArmA files often enough for the system to cache them. I'd think with 16Gb RAM you could try your hand at a ram disk first.

Well there are folks about who do play the game for the most part via a controler though still not entirely without keyboard, the controls are completely mapable and will accept double tapping etc so it is possible to control the basic FPS component of the game particularly ifyour controller is also quite good, though I imagine there will be issues with the higher command stuff, for only 17.99 it might be worth the risk. Though You could also grab the free version, try it out, and maybe wait for the next sale.

The side with the Abrams, F-35 and dual sighted 7.62mm rifles will have a better time, I'd wager.Well in my experience its not as good as being on Opfor and owning Blufor under these conditions.
And when the mission maker has a basic sense of balancing and takes away the Tunguska and F-35?If the mission maker feels its required then its still good. After all its the mission makers baby and they should be in the best position to judge these things. And at the end of day theres never any shortage of folks that will tell you your wrong. Or try to convince you that the reality in thier heads is the one that SHOULD have played out in front of them. I've been RPG'n, tabletop'n, RTS'n and mock field combat'n (historical re-enacting) for decades and I know its realy hard coming up with scenarios that are percieved as 'balanced' without coming up with some symetrical solution, and often its warranted, but I also realy like good asymetrical missions ie. Insugency.
@Celery I realy don't think you have anything to worry about either way. I've played many of your missions in the past and I have no doubt that whatever folks may say about balancing, they WILL be playing your missions.

In terms of simulation, BIs record on armament is superb, but it terms of balanced multiplayer gameplay its not, and arguably has never been for the sake of realism. This question has been posed in previous titles (OFP/Arma1/Arma2) but since BI has taken the liberty of extending the timeline of their next IP into the future, I was wondering if there was anything mentioned on the subject of having equal (or near equal) technology for both east/west sides since they have the liberty to stretch what is realistic and what is not..Honestly I dont actualy agree with the first half of the OP's statment, previously it simply required some knowledge base of both players and mission makers to understand the context the various assets were developed and deployed in,(no short supply amongst this crowd) and though Celery is right, and that particular balance/imbalance has forced some lateral thinking to achieve certain PvP game types, I have enjoyed it over the years. Though I can see how the opening sentance has come close to derailling the OP's actual question.
If anyones still trying to figure out whats going on just re-read this (important) bit again
but since BI has taken the liberty of extending the timeline of their next IP into the future, I was wondering if there was anything mentioned on the subject of having equal (or near equal) technology for both east/west sides since they have the liberty to stretch what is realistic and what is not..Well all I can say to that is,I dont recall hearing anything mentioned particularly, but from what we've seen sofar, we could assume a yes.
After all the Opfor forces seem to be utilising some high tech infantry toys as well as stolen western/Israeli designs. So it appears that there has been some leveling 1 for 1, Blufor V Opfor. And I think that BIS has set up the perfect context to make it so. Why else would Iran have the balls to step on Greece if it didn't have the teeth.
So this thread has at least shown also that many (and I'll admit myself included) will also be somewhat pissed if this boiled down to a bunch of purely generic classes defined by a model tweak or different texture. But there is still so much we don't know about whats to come yet, so casting such doubts tend to be a little OT and need to come with the qualifier 'this is my premature fear'
Curously, one of the first things to come to my mind when ArmA3 was first announced was that this was going to be more of a 'Resistance' type campaign and I had imagined that BIS's intial statement, to the effect that they weren't including as many equipment assets in A3, was because they aren't needed as much when your behind enemy lines, getting your stuff from the enemy etc. So maybe (dare I say it) there is yet some context for 'generic' stuff. Nothing to do but wait and see.

Will the action menu be less, eh, "slippery"? It seems a quite a few people have an irritating tendency to slip a bit and say, accidently eject instead of turning on autohover do to a quick accidental mousewheel roll.LOL, borrowed the wifes logitec MX Revolution the other day, the very definition of 'slippery'. But on the whole I've already overcome this buy remapping and using hotkeys as much as possible, also nothing stopping you from remapping your mouse if you have a enough buttons so that your enter/activate is not accossiated with the wheel.

Well, if any increasing of displayed particles or, eg, group limit per side, CPU power for scripts etc. will cause CTD, then of course shouldn't be touched. The question is, why would cause CTD, and not only bigger CPU/GPU load?Thats something only BIS can address, though I suspect memory also plays a part, as well as the prospect of trouble shooting user issues with yet another factor. Though a particle effects slider would still be good to see.
-
I'll forgive BIS for not actually including specific naval units but I'm hoping that they at least make it easier for addon makers and include some VSB2 style improvements to cater for decks below water line and increase the allowable geometry size.

............8gb g skill 2133 ddr3 ram
560ti/660
small ssd for windows installation and around 500gb to 1tb normal hdd.
Undecided about at the moment about psu and cpu cooling but im looking around at the moment for those 2.
What does everyone think about that rig?
That should do the job, though I think the advice you've been given with regard to 1600 mhz RAM is correct. Unless you you plan to overclock your mobo will probably default to 1600 anyway, and the 10'er will be down the drain. Saved it and make the decision re graphics cards easier.

Accuracy and authentic feel of equipment outwieghts any PvP balancing IMO.

... does that mean that it will be less powerful? At least the reference card released by nvidia will be, but its still a question of how much. An example would be the difference between the 680 and 670, the 670 is basicaly a 680 with disabled shader cluster and lower clock speeds. But then the varoius manufacturers get hold of it, redesign PCBs and cooling solutions, overclock it and come up with a 670 that performs very close to a 680 reference card. Many 680 cards out there are still a bit better than 670's however, due to the fact that they aren't reference cards either. (having fun yet) From what I've read there will be at least 3 nvidia 660's, a Ti, SE and standard, what happens from then will probably make the choice even more difficult
Still from what I'ver researched recently the cost v FPS difference doesn't warrant any of the 680 cards. And your right, for casual gaming there are many 500 series cards falling into that sweet bang for buck spot as they perform quite well, yet the stock needs to be cleared for the full 600 series range so prices are dropping
Now why am I knowing all this and still hanging out to see what the 660 do to the market (and maybe the GK110 chip (Guessing a 780?) befre the end of the year) .
Primarily because my computor isn't just casual gaming machine and 500 series cards basicaly run hotter and draw more power than 600 series cards for less performance (though my 285 is even worse). Not enough to worry about when your gaming a couple of nights a week and maybe weekends but it adds up over the years when doing more. And I'm also entertaining the idea of going surround vision and don't wont to be forced into getting a second card to do so wich means a 600 series minimum.
PS, I've found guru3d a good source, heaps of reviews that use the same measuring criteria.

If at all possible make the graphics card your last purchase, CPU's and mobos shouldn't move much till Haswell comes out and even then I suspect high end i7s will drop only slightly in price as Haswell is focusing on the mobile side of CPUs. Don't know what AMD has coming up but nvidia should be releasing the 660's soon so if your absolutely certain you WONT be going multiple monitor you could pick up a 570 or 580, quite cheap as they try and clear the stock. I'm going to try hold on to my 285 till nvidia release a card based on thier GK110 chip. If it turns out they simply drop a 2grand card on market to see who buys I'll be a bit put out, but if it shakes prices up a bit it could be worth the wait.

I think the FOV issue is heightened in ArmA because it is so open ended, but at the end of the day I think its fine, I can survive with double tapping - ,gives me what I need, but I'm still looking forward to the day I can sneek two extra screens in without my wife knowing.
-
It doesn't go past cute for me.
The tech will certainly go places but for now it won't beat pressure sensitive tablets/pens for art, and using it on engineering or architecture software all day vs the tiny mouse twitches I've got down pat would be a complete waste of time and energy.
Strange that it claims these areas would benifit.
Maybe I need to get myself a turtle neck to see the light?
-
^^Exactly as Nodunit said,
Implying ArmA is a failure as a milsim dismissess the fact that it (and the franchise in general) has been successfull enough to keep BIS going as a studio and publisher these past years, how is that not a success?
-
..........and rising a big question :how come ArmA fails at being a milsim, and succeeds in being a ZOMBIE game ?Exactly when did ArmA fail at being a milsim game I wonder.
My opinion.. It's all good, and get over the noobs, elitism is more damaging to the ArmA community than a creative mod that highlights what a great sandbox the RV engine is.
Most hardcore ArmA players have stuck to their clan servers and aren't phazed by the DayZ stuff anyway.

When I first saw Placebo's images my mind went all backflipy and imagined I was getting a JSDF DLC for A3, then I thought (quite stupidly)of what first generation mecha might look like and passed out, but now I see it for what it is, it may be the first BI product I don't buy ,like ever. (unless the map is realy realy fuckin awsome)Mnmnum...eating my words...Damn you BIS sales !!!!!

Q9650 OC'd to 3.6ghzXFX 780 mobo
8gig Kingston 800mhz
GTX 285
W7 64bit home premium
3x320gig HDs in Raid 5
320gig HD general storage
850w Thermaltake PSU
Its looking a bit old but hasn't choked on anything yet. I'm thinking a new 670 GPU, and droping my 320gig HDD for a 320 SDD and putting my OS and A3 on it should do OK.
I know what I said but the 'houshold' desktop entered its death throws and the core of my machine was in turn cannibalised and needed replacing
Though this upgrade isn't for ArmA, if it was I'd have a new grapics card (see spoiler in sig)
Hopefully I'll get some time to do some FR comparisons to gauge how much the leap is realy worth, for Arma I doubt it will be much, I have noticed A2 uses 6 cores when hyperthreading is disabled, but its not a balanced load, and I'm yet to see any statment about how A3 might be improved in this regard.
Gloat over.
PS.just as a reference compared to previous build, I get maybe a 5% improvement on A2's Benchtest01, an insignificant amount on a graphics intesive test. And about 25% improvement on A2's Benchtest02 wich is more CPU intesive, but an unlikely situation for most everyday gaming. No difference with hyperthreading on/off. Just proves that for everyday gaming, esp MP where a server is doing much of the calc for you, going over an i5 is overkill.

-Paladin- time to re-read the thread title and the opening statment. Your argument dosn't seem particular to steamworks, just defending steam in general wich isn't actualy the topic.

Multiplayer Balancing - Will Arma3's MP be balanced?
in ARMA 3 - GENERAL
Posted
Maybe we should move this discuson to what we would like to see as balanced counterparts.
ie. The Mi-48 could be oposed by a next gen, armed to the teeth blackhawk, maybe drawing 'inspiration' from the stealth version they used to get Bin Laden.....etc
The only issue I see is that BIS would have to throw in some extra resources to produce assets it's probably not going to use in its main story/campaign to ensure that counterparts are available to mission makers. Depends on how much value they see in providing that kind of support for PvP battles.
