State of the union address, 2004

In the 80s and 90s many came from Turkey (correct me if I'm wrong, someone). Don't know if that's still the case since the turn of the century They are known as Gastarbeiter(?) (guest workers) and didn't have full citizen status. This is why the German neo-Nazis have such a bug up their ass about Turks.

State of the union address, 2004

A lot of these arguments overlook the fact that a proportion of US shows are bought by European (and other) stations because they are actually very, very good. e.g. Simpsons, West Wing, Oz, 6 Feet Under, Sopranos, Malcolm In The Middle, Friends (if you like that kind of thing), Frasier, Band of Brothers (joint with Beeb) etc. etc. There's a lot of dross too but these days we in the UK are the kings of exporting trashy TV. For every Cold Feet, the Office or Phoenix Nights we churn out a Who Wants To Be A Moron, The Weakest Moron, Morons In Their Eyes or Pop Moron. Thanks to which we now have a reputation for producing the worst telly on the planet. And we had to beat competition from the likes of Jerry Springer to win that title, so we must be bad! Films too. Hollywood turns out some unpardonable garbage and is unbearably self-congratulatory and insular but most years there's some good stuff comes out of there too. No point in blaming Americans, or even Hollywood, if moo-eyed multiplex audiences pay to watch crap. What p***** me off is that the door swings one way. American networks / studios / whichever souldead goons it is that make these decisions are so frightened of foreign TV and films that they would rather remake them, set in America and featuring Americans than show the original. Cause, you know, if an American audience had to try and empathise with a foreigner their fragile little heads might just explode. e.g. Dear John, `Til Death Us Do Part, Cracker (ffs Cracker!). And if you're going to film a foreign book (High Fidelity, 101 Dalmations) be sure to relocate that action and characters to the US. Most of the time this kind of thing is just small-minded and annoying but at other times it seems, to my slightly paranoid brain, to border on racism. e.g. lots of anti-French sentiment in America, studio committed to making a contemptible hash of a film version of The League Of Extraordinary Gentlemen ---> decision to axe French character from the film and replace with mind-bogglingly inappropriate American one. As well as relocating the action to NY (natch). So, except for the occasional show that sneaks in under the radar America gets much less from us than we get from them. I'd be a lot more annoyed about it if I lived in America `cause I'd be the one missing out on some really decent films and shows. Whereas when the Americans make something cool, we all get to see it. Without having to remake it!

    Day of defeat

I loved DoD but I haven't played 1.1 (or whatever they're up to now). Last v I played was 1.0. That's not because I don't wanna, just because I'm playing nothing online until I get another broadband connection sorted out (maybe by March!!! ). Wish they hadn't nerfed the MGs so thoroughly though. Wish they hadn't got rid of Heutau for 1.0 either. There's some really good clan servers for it and you could almost always find a decent game going on somewhere.

I don't mean like just picking one from a list or having to do it externally from the game, I mean like in other games where you have sliders controlling e.g. distance between eyes, skin tone, eye colour, nose length, beard shade, moustache curliness etc.

    Graphics engine improvement

Rain / snow that is driven by wind would be so great. Wind could be set to either `constant' or `blustery' so that rain / snow was pushed directionally either constantly (during storms etc.) or every now and then as the wind changes direction. Or maybe the constancy could be proportional to the strength of the wind, so that weak winds don't affect rain (though maybe do affect snow), medium winds are blustery, sending the occasional sheet of rain in the same direction it's blowing, causing snow flurries, and strong winds are constant with the rain / snow slicing in at 45 degrees.

I'd actually prefer a `face editor' in the game so that the players fizzog could be tweaked to resemble whoever I want. Hell, if Tony Hawks Skateboarding can manage it I'm sure BIS can!

    Chemical weapons.

If chemical weapons were to be implemented then, unless a scenario involved fighting against a particularly poor 3rd world military phosgene and mustard gas would be unlikely. These weapons still exist in the arsenals of (?) the US and Soviet Union but are much less likely to be used than sarin, soman, tabun and VX which would not create a dense, chemical fog. However VX in particular is battlefield-persistent, capable of lingering for three weeks or longer in places like the underside of fences etc. It has always been a hypothetical option for area-denial. A mission set in a VX'd region, littered with dead animals and people, requiring NBC suits, could be quite atmospheric and spooky.

Next time you think sci-fi, think again

Alternative explanations for the seeming `mud' have been put forward. One is that the airbags punctured and released a small amount of vapour. Water is still the top explanation though (or, to be more accurate, highly concentrated `brine' - H2O alone would either freeze or evaporate apparently). Electrostatic clumping of particles has also been suggested, but, in light of the ESA water findings, mud seems the most likely. But they say the `mud' is too close to the lander to be investigated by the rover - too high risk for some reason. They're considering making the rover `skid' a bit to try and churn up some more.

You are completely right of course. imo the problem is the computers. Compare the PC you have now with the 8-bit computer you had as a kid (C64 or Atari or Spectrum). This computer is better right, but I bet you have way more problems with it than you did with the one you had 20 years ago. More sophistication == more liability.

    Heli landing problems

That is actually a very clever suggestion. I'll give that a go at the earliest opportunity. Thanks dude!
  16. Hi. I'm going schiz trying to unf*** a helo's wp's. afaik they should be fine but the thing just won't land! Last wp but one is a `move' at which point a .sqs is exec'd (causing it to seek & destroy basically, until all enemies are dead). When the script ends the helo should move onto its last wp and land. If I make the last wp `move' or `hold' (with helosname land "land" in the On Activation) or if I make it `unload' or `transport unload' (it needs to land to sling out a load of troops so their `get out' wp is obviously synched to the last wp anyway) then nothing happens. It just hovers there like a big dumbass. If I make the last wp a `get out' wp then the .sqs at the previous wp is cut short, only being run for a few seconds, and then the pilot lands it perfectly and gets out - this would be ideal if it wasn't for the failure to run the script! If I use a trigger condition to make sure that the helo can't move onto it's last wp before all the enemies are dead, it also doesn't run the script, just hovers dead still until they have been killed by someone else. I have tried everything I can think of with this sodding helo. As well as those detailed above I have tried adding extra `move' wp's before the `land' one, moving the invisible H in case it was partially obstructed etc. etc. Anyone with any ideas about what else to try, I'd love to hear them. Anyone with any guaranteed methods of getting a helo to land using a wp I'd love to hear it (anything that works better than helosname land "land"!). Tx in advance!

State of the union address, 2004

Not all women can take the pill, depots or implants (for medical reasons). Some get very ill if they try. This leaves their only options as more intrusive devices. They'd, I'm sure, be glad if their blokes could take the pills. Oh, and condoms aren't safe as an exclusive birth control measure. Safest defence against knobrot but should be combined with additional contraception if preventing pregnancy is a serious concern. The failure rates are low, but even at less than 1% you'd still only need to use 100 for the likelihood to get worrying.

What about your tax dollars that go to support the children of married unemployed layabouts? Or is that different somehow? Also, the people most affected by the stigmas relating to out-of-wedlock child-rearing are the children themselves. I see no advantage to perpetuating irrational stigmatisation of kids. Anyone who thinks that not advising teenagers to use condoms is a good idea because STDs have not been totally eradicated should consider the fact that without condom use STD levels would be exponentially higher. If you want proof look at the epidemiology of HIV in the US or Europe before aggressive safe-sex campaigning compared with afterwards. Then look at the present-day epidemiology as condom use declines over the past ~five years. Condoms are better at preventing STDs than people spouting on about abstinence and being ignored. Unless you can find some method of forcing men and women to commit to abstinence then barrier contraception is absolutely the best way to protect against STDs. Yes, there are still STDs out there, of coure there are, but that doesn't mean that condoms aren't protecting an awful lot of people.

    The Iraq Thread 2

Yeah, I know. But Antonov were frontrunners to provide a leased heavy-lift fleet for NATO up to about 2012 when the Globemaster replacements come in. Then we never heard any more about it. Was just wondering if anyone knew if it'd gone ahead.

    The world and adhd

ADHD is massively, MASSIVELY overdiagnosed in this country. I forbear to comment on the situation elsewhere `cause I dunno. But being unemployed sucks. MAIN THINGS THAT P*** ME OFF ABOUT JOBHUNTING: When they can't be bothered to send a reply telling you if you've not been shortlisted. That `human resources' departments, whose job, let's face it, is to send out application forms, can't even do that properly. Say the closing date is a Friday. By Monday the forms could be on the right desk, by the next Friday a shortlist drawn up and interview invitations sent out. So why does it take up to three months? The boxes on application forms are always the wrong size. They pay people to design these sheets and yet you get a box 1 inch high and three inches wide in which to list every address you've had in the past ten years? Or all your qualifications? You're supposed to keep it neat, make a good impression but at the same time you're trying to squeeze all this information into a miniscule box? What's with that? When you start to see jobs you already applied for being readvertised. Or when companies that have your details on file (yeah, like they EVER look at those) advertise jobs that you could do without getting in touch. The fact that the longer you go without getting a job, the less employable you look. "Well, we could invite this one for interview, but look, he hasn't had a job in six months!" When you get invited for interview, don't get the job and they lose your travel expenses claim and receipts so it costs you Å200 into the bargain. And that's without even getting into the misery and poverty of just being unemployed ...

While we're talking about lunar hoaxes, I've heard this story numerous times but it sounds too good to be true. Anyone know whether he actually did say "good luck Mr Gorsky"? Good luck Mr Gorsky

/somewhat OT Did Antonov win the NATO heavy lift contract in the end? /sorry for that btw, why's everyone assuming the yellow car is in the wrong? Maybe the pilot got lost and landed on the Pudsey bypass.

iirc someone was chuntering on about lycanthropes in a recent `zombie' thread. These, obviously, will be essential for OFP to achieve it's `Dog Soldiers' mission destiny.

What would be really cool would be if they could use the stereo footage to produce a 3D IMAX film of Mars. I went to see the 3D International Space Station one and that was awesome.
