Hi,I know theres no parameter to bind arma on a specific IP (and thats a real shame for a mp game) but my problem is a lil different.
I rent a dedicated machine which got 2 connection interfaces, each one with its own IP of course.
My problem is that arma and also arma2 servers are usually binding on the primary IP but somehow it sometimes start binding on the secondary IP.
This can happen during game resulting in a "lag out" for every1 on the server. Then when ur kicked for timeout and going to lobby you can see server is still online its just binding on another IP so you gota reconnect to keep playing the mission.
Thats really a pain and i think I will just give up with my servers and this game since you can hardly get a popular server if players are getting kicked every now and then.
PS : disabling an interface is not a satisfying solution, I just hope BI will finally release a patch fixing this horrible issue.
Just curious, why is disabling one of the NICs not an option? If its a dedicated server, why do you need two active NICs? Surely disabling one is the best solution so that network access coming in on that NIC and potentially accessing software on the server doesn't interfere with any games?

After installing Windows XP on another partition and noticing my FPS degrade over time running SLI with the nVidia 186.18 drivers, I installed the new beta drivers that are mentioned in another thread here on this forum. New drivers are 186.24. After rebooting, I forgot to enable SLI and jumped straight into the game. I don't even have an Arma 2 profile since it was deleted with the new driver install. So far the game is exibiting the following qualities:1 - No major loss of FPS with time. I test on the Superpowers mission on the Chernarus map
2 - Low FPS were expected but even 20FPS was a lot smoother/playable that 30+ FPS with SLI enabled with the nvidia SLI profile and 186.18 drivers.
3 - Overall texture quality was fantastic. Very little if any graphical corruption/pop ups in the distance when zooming in with right mouse button or binoculars.
I still need to perform more testing in the event that maybe this driver has something to do with it, but I wanted to report my preliminary findings here and solicit some feedback from you guys.
Yeah, it's possible. SLI is an additional layer on top of the standard rendering that's entirely able to create additional problems.
For me, I had major problems with my Nvidia 295 which manifested as soldiers with white heads and intensely slow and frustrating geometry rendering, up until I installed the EVGA SLI patch. With that on, i've not had a single 'doll-head' incident but I still do get rendering slowdown, the more I play the game.
For anyone that does use SLI (whether two separate cards or a single card with multiple GPUs) it's very easy to push into single GPU mode via the Nvidia Control Panel.

Another BSOD :P and... a brief loss of internet connection due to an error on the service providers part... and multiple proper system restarts. aside from that, nothing.Well, if the game is asking for the DVD its clearly an issue on the Steam side. I'd advise checking their forums.
As for BSODs, disable the auto restart in Windows and then write down the file (if one is shown) that's shown on the BSOD screen. That will be your start point to trying to figure out which piece of hardware is the root cause of the BSOD.

To be honest I don't think there's a graphics card out there that can run this mess of a game on all high settings. But as mentioned above more than £60 is needed for a good gamers card.Maybe a HD 4850 would be a decent card for a decent price.
Also to delevero .He said he's on a tight budget and he mentions a GTX 295.Hardly a budget card.
Not true mate, I can play on Very High settings on an Nvidia 295. The game itself then degrades over time, until it CTDs with an arma2.exe error but that's definitely a problem with the engine as opposed to the 295's ability to run at Very High.
If he buys the card I linked to, that will give him the best bang-for-buck at £120 and will future-proof for 1-2 further generations of cards.

I have recently downloaded and installed the game off of steam and i have hardly been able to play it at all because I get the BSOD every few minutes while playing. I have only had this issue once with the demo, which otherwise ran fine. I have the latest drivers and the latest patch for the game. my specs are:Intel Q6600 @ 2.40 GHz
4 GB of RAM
Nvidia 8800 GT
Vista 32 Bit
Any Suggestions as to what I can do? as it is, the game is unplayable.
Edit: I am now getting a "wrong CD/DVD inserted" error, which is ridiculous because I downloaded it from steam and obviously do not have a CD or DVD.. any suggestions? Thanks in advance :)
So, first you could play but it BSOD'd your system and now you can't even load the game up because it's asking for the DVD?
The obvious question is, what happened to your PC in the time between being able to play it with BSOD's and now not even being able to load it?

Here's an advice: at least aim for the budget cards, the below-budget (and even worse, the as-low-as-you-go-budget cards that some people seem to think is perfectly OK for high end gaming) are generally not worth it. $50-70 cards is a complete waste of money if you're a gamer, you need to go up to ~$150 to get something that's worth it...This.
Low-cost video cards are cheap for a reason.
If you get a nice video card now, you can expect to keep it for at least a couple of generations.
Something like an Nvidia 260 (http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-167-AS&groupid=701&catid=56&subcat=927) for £120 would be the kind of card you should be looking at but make sure the rest of your system wouldn't create a bottle-neck or you won't get the best out of it.
Apologies in advance if linking this kind of this is against any rule. Just trying to help.

Is this just for a 64bit OS? I just dual booted XP 32 and wanted to know if I need to do anything other than just launch the game and cry that the FPS just start to suck after playing for 5 minutes.AFAIK, just 64bit yeah. 32bit will refuse to report anything over 3.5gb although it will actually use up to 4gb.
For Win32 there are no switches that affect performance, as such. There are switches that remove the splash screen and also prevent the carrier menu attract mode from being rendered. Makes getting into games a lot faster.

It runs just fine on win7 x64 for me without any tweaks and without "-winxp". If you have troubles with SLI/Crossfire or game overlays (such as Steam or Xfire) you can add "-winxp".Yeah but this tweak is to fix the system memory problem when using over 6gb (I think) in a 64bit environment.

Will try the mobo drivers now. Have already done a check of both HDD's. A long shot but would it make a difference if the HDD's are FAT32 or NTFS?Mark dont worry about being old mate. My first computer was the mighty Spectrum 48k
NTFS is the standard nowadays, there's no point considering FAT32.
One final point is to make sure your BIOS is up to date. Most motherboard manufacturers allow you to do this through a Windows app now so it's much easier and more accessible.
However, there's still the chance that something could go wrong with the update so be prepared to reset the BIOS via a motherboard switch if required. Updating the BIOS remains one of the worst parts of PC maintenance for me, even after 20 years in the game.

Nice, I'll remember that when looking for beta testers :pBah! I'm a great tester me! Been doing it for 11 years! :p

I'm running 8GB of RAM with Windows 7 64bit. The overclocking profile which ran fine under XP (2.4GHz OC'd to 3.2Ghz) didn't work in Windows 7 without blue screening. I decide to install XP on another partition just for A2.I fire up the game in XP and I start to get exciting becuase I overclocked my processor 800Ghz and XP boots fine. Sure enough, play a while in XP and the FPS just drop into the teens when things get busy. On top of that, 30FPS in XP is so jumpy and not smooth that I was starting to wonder if my FPS counter was fucked up. Playing with the render ahead settings in the nVidia profile does nothing. I can't catch a break. Can't OC in Windows 7 and performance is terrible in XP 32bit even with my quad core running at 3.2Ghz. I'm wondering if I should even humor myself and try XP 64bit. GOD!!!!!!! I feel like crying. Never in my life have I had so much trouble with a stupid effing game.
My advice? Don't beat yourself up.
It's pretty obvious from these boards that there are fundamental engine problems that are the cause of some of the poor performance.
I have a C2D 3.2ghz with an Nvidia 295 and my performance, whilst all settings are Very High is far from stellar. Actually it starts out pretty good but goes downhill from there.

Stuck in a few games earlier and they all installed without any problems. Im wonderng if its a conflict between the OS software.XP Pro SP3, AMD Athlon 7850 DC Black 2.8, 3gig ram, ATI Radeon HD 4670
Hmm, XP is pretty solid with drivers but in this instance i'm thinking it's more to do with the motherboard drivers, such as SATA and IDE.
Go to the motherboard manufacturers website and download the latest Driver pack. That should update all motherboard features to the latest point.
I would still try a hard drive check. Just because its new doesn't mean it won't have bad sectors and the like. Always eliminate the obvious to make the path clear. That's my testing background coming into play! :)

I have 8GB of ram and was wondering if I had to implement any of the tweaks I had to add while running Windows 7 64bit. Does anyone know? Do I need to limit my RAM in msconfig? Do I need to add the maxmem parameter to the shortcut?Add '-winxp' to the shortcut.

What specific files does the patch update? Maybe I could copy them over from a patched working game :confused:Too big a question i'd suspect.
Lots of files get updated, especially .PBOs. Theoretically you could install Arma2 and then copy over all the data from a patched up install of the game.
But mate, it would be a lot easier just to figure out why you're having so many problems installing and patching in the first place. For all you know this could just be the tip of the iceberg and once you get Arma2 up and running the next game might fail to install as well.
Nip the problem in the bud.

I still like playing Defender...what does that make me :)OLD!

Hi there,I have a most peculiar problem with ArmA2 in that: when i play MP and when i die, i'll be treated to the scoreboard and then swiftly returned to the desktop. The program has effectively crashed, and not visible on the start bar, however is still listed on task manager. Before i noticed this was happening, at one point i had 4 clients running in the background.
Known problem? Any known fixes?
Hmm, when you die in MP you'll respawn back at the 'base'. When doing so the game engine will attempt to essentially re-render the entire location in one go, as you don't gradually approach it.
That could indicate a problem on the graphics card side. Is there anything shown in Event Viewer, at the time when this occurs? Look for something like a Driver error.
Also, what spec PC are you running?
-
Maye you are right about single player. Guess I'll never find out how good multiplaye is. I guess its back to DODS & CSS for the time being.Ah.
Not to sound condescending or anything but if you're a Day Of Defeat Source and Counter Strike Source player, Arma2 definitely is not for you if you're expecting a similar game.
It's in no way a twitch shooter. You can't run and gun. You need to spend time getting into the best, safest place and then wait for an opportunity. Give your location away by running/driving into an enemy infested town and you'll be on the bad end of an AK-47/RPG/T90.
Seriously, Arma2 and DODS are about as different as you can get. Maybe that explains why you didn't think much to the small amount of Arma2 game time that you did get?
-
Whatever is causing it is a nightmare. TBH having played single player for 30 minutes or so, its not really all that, it all looks nice but the controlls are just so bloody fiddly. I am hoping that when I finaly get a patch that works doesnt seem its just me google brings up a few having problems), I can get online and maybe start enjoying it.Hmm, don't agree about the Single player. At first it starts out quite linear and on-rails but about 5 missions in you're given freedom of the map to go and do what you want, when you want and that's when the game really comes into its own.
But Multiplayer is where it's really at. Some of the best fun i've had in months, playing Co-Op Evo and CTI. Shame that the game just degrades so badly and requires frequent restarts to get running nicely (for a while) again.
Controls do take some getting use to, that's true. Still can't say that i've perfected controlling my Squad but i'm getting there.

I was in game with my solider stood still (idle)..Regards

Oh dear. In that case it's possible that you might have a dodgy stick of RAM and when Arma2 attempts to write to an address the RAM is returning an error.
Try running some memory tests.

I have a brand spanking new PC. I have fully updated everything. Both drives are loaded with the very latest firmware. No other software has any problem with my system. Just Arma2... I had to install the game in safe mode which was bad enough. BI wont be getting any more of my hard earnt cash ever again.Having your OS in Safe Mode won't affect anything on your Arma2 DVD. The installshield will run exactly the same as if your PC was running normal.
More likely, having your OS in Safe Mode has prevented drivers from loading that were causing problems. Perhaps your hard drive controller software or something.
Arma2 does have it's fair share of problems but this doesn't sound like one of them.
-
OK not only was it a big enough piss take that it took a day and a half to get this game installed due to CRC errors. Now the fkn update is doing the same thing. (I've even tried it in safe mode)I have downloaded 5 patches from different sources. I know one works as it worked on our othe pc. Every single PBO file gives an error:mad:
I thought valve/steam were a cowboy operation, well BI you have reached new levels of ineptitude :rage:
Are you sure that your hard-drive is ok? DVD drive?
I've not encountered this at all, on my side. For the game install and installing the patches. With you saying the Patch also gives you the same error leads me to believe that you may have some problems on the hard-drive.
Try running Error Checking on the drive, might have some bad sectors, etc.

Hello, I am getting a new graphics card very soon and i was looking at some of the graphics card my budget limit is 60 pounds and looking at some of them on pc world this one comes just udner the budget by 1p lol... this is the one i will be purchaseing PNY GeForce 9500GT 512MBPCI-E Graphics Card but i need advise on if it will run the game fine... will i be able to run the graphics on full? or will i need a better graphics card?
Thanks for help in advance.
I'm really sorry but that card won't be great for gaming. It's a low range version of the 98xx releases that Nvidia put out before their current 2xx line.
Graphics settings won't be workable at anything even approaching full. I have an Nvidia 295 which is pretty high-grade gaming kit and with almost all in-game settings set to Very High (the best setting possible) I get wildly different results based from what area of the map i'm in, to whether its single player or multiplayer and all sorts of other variables.
There's currently no single, full answer to the question of how to get better performance in Arma2 and more/better hardware certainly isn't an option for most people. Especially considering that it's apparently making no difference.
-
Help appreciated please this is bugging me so bad with 10 seconds every time i do something to co ordinate tactics/ pauseYou're stuck with it, sadly. At least for the map.
I don't have that extreme level of delay but with an Nvidia 295 and a 3.2ghz C2D it still takes me about 1-2 seconds to switch.
The map in this game is atrocious, in terms of performance. When I zoom in or out I can see the map redraw from top to bottom and it's so slow I can see the lines of quality on the map detail go from left to right.

Hi Plowjoy - thanks for the info..Here's an update - Left myself logged into ARMA2 (ingame) and then went and had something to eat - 5 mins max - came back to PC and found that ARMA2 had CTD again.. Keep getting these "Exception code: C0000005 ACCESS_VIOLATION" Errors.
I'm running XP/SP2 with 1GB ram - (I know I should have more) - it's an old system (AMD 64Athlon 3Ghz) and a GF 7800 GS / 512MB ram - Running game in 1024x768 All settings normal.. (not high)..

** Wierd thing is that afetr someone told me how to fix the constant receiving message - (i.e turn video buffer? sor something like that, to Low)..
Now that I can play the game (for more than an hour) - its now doing these CTDs
Any additional help appreciated..

Very interesting. When you left it, was it at the menu or was it actually in a game with your solider stood still?
If it was in the menu, that's potentially a classic memory leak. The attract mode which flits between views and pans could well be reloading the same textures into RAM, rather than using the textures that are already loaded up. Or somewhere in-between.
Best bet is to watch the arma2.exe memory usage directly and then you'll see for sure.
You're right, 1gb isn't a lot nowadays and your OS will be using 1/3 to 1/2 of that straight off the bat. 512mb isn't a lot for an app to try and use and that's with every other 3rd party application that might also be running, not running.
-
Ever since I managed to sort out the 'Receiving' Bug - (by making video texture to low in adv. video settings) - I could actually now play a game withough getting that damn message on my screen at the most inopportune moments. So now I'm playing ARMA 2 for about 1-2 hrs before it does something else stupid - Like CTD (Crash to Desktop)- My opinion at the moment - MP ARMA2 is too unstable.. No idea if SP does this CTD as I'm concentraing on MP at the moment.
Here's the error:
Event Type: Error
Event Source: Application Error
Event Category: None
Event ID: 1000
Date: 12/07/2009
Time: 18:14:46
Description:
Faulting application arma2.exe, version 1.2.0.58134, faulting module arma2.exe, version 1.2.0.58134, fault address 0x0015f8e9.
Had this a number of times - even after a reboot..
If BI are reading this - any ideas why MP is soo unstable (well for me anyway) and why I keep getting these CTDs?
** Im going to try the DirextX9 / Creative Drivers fix and see if I get more stability first..
IMHO - It's making the game unplayable.. it's putting me off this game.. and making me wish 'OPF2 - Dragon Rising' was available right now (as much as I hate to say it - as I've played this game and every iteration since OPF)

In game settings don't make any difference as to whether you'll CTD or not. At least not from my experience.
I run every setting at Very High, aside from Post Processing which is Low.
Monitoring arma2.exe memory usage on a second monitor I can see exactly where the game gets unstable. At around 900mb RAM occupation, textures start to load much slower. Objects start as rectangles and then over the course of 1-2 seconds warp into their intended shape.
When the client RAM occupation hits 1gb, I get major and I mean major graphical anomalies. Warping, flashing, long stretches of graphics over the entire screen, you name it I get it. Looking directly at the ground (and I assume sky) is the only way to prevent the game from crashing, at this stage.
Once client RAM occupation goes over 1gb, arma2.exe will blow. Every single time.
My system only has 2gb (about to be rectified with a new PC build early next week) which when running Vista isn't a huge amount of memory to play with but when arma2.exe blows, my system memory usage is only 75%, so theres a quarter of my physical RAM left to use.
Should state that all my above problems take place in Multiplayer games such as Co-Op and CTI. I've not as of yet seen this in single player. I suspect that a large part of the problem is with the way that the client handles texture management as I see the problem above, delays when rendering in game objects after i've respawned and it gets worse every respawn.
Single player definitely isn't as smooth as Multiplayer. It's like we've got two separate games that we're trying to troubleshoot and its doubtful we can get a solution in place that will fix both, without the help of BIS.

Sorry to say it but the random nature of the crashes does seem to indicate a memory problem.
Good luck with memtest!
