ok, got another BSOD..."Attempt to reset the display driver and recover from timeout failed"
"STOP: 0X00000116 (0X86776510, 0X8F61B4E0, 0X00000000, 0X00000002)
nvlddmkm.sys adress 8F61B4E0 base at 8F60F000, Datestamp 4a2Fc069"
none of that means anything to me, does it help identify what the problem is?
and the driver I am running is 186.18
also, the steam suggestion worked. thanks :)
Nice one! Good step in the right direction.
As someone has already posted, thats an Nvidia file so we can at least start to narrow it down.
I've just had arma2.exe blow up on me with an error that the video adaptor had stopped responding. You may be seeing classic memory leak problems, as we all seem to be after a couple of hours of play. Does that fit with when the game crashes?

Well after setting pagefile to 4gb and launching arma2 again - I managed to get approx 1.5 - 2 hrs (yay!) out of the game before a CTD.Vertex Buffer too small (32435<16384)

** I think (working my way through your suggestions_ it looking more likely arma2 is crashing out after running a certain time.. (1 1.5 hrs) - due to I guess a memory leak or the game software trying to access memory already allocated??

** No HD errors - I dont think it's that - I still think its Arma2 doing bad stuff in memory -
Googling "arma Exception code: C0000005 ACCESS_VIOLATION" - throws up quite a number of hits - seems to stretch back to OPF days, but in this case insted of the GFX crashing (as seen in a lot of posts), its arma2 as the faulting appliacation.
If BI are reading any of this - some input from you guys would be helpful - I dont want to end up chasing my tail with plowjoy if it turns out to be an issue with arma2.exe :)

Well, if you're seeing CTDs after 1.5 - 2 hours, welcome to the club! :D
I just got binned out of a CTI immediately after a respawn. I had been flushing the game at regular intervals which does help to speed things up again but evidently it's not a proper fix.
---------- Post added at 01:40 AM ---------- Previous post was at 01:39 AM ----------
he only has one GB of RAM... even his PSU is suspect.. now that his system is getting hammered by ARMA2, its loosing its wheels and falls down...This game needs at least two GB...No mate, he's got 2gb of brand new RAM in there now.
---------- Post added at 01:40 AM ---------- Previous post was at 01:40 AM ----------
I'm sorry if you've tried this already but if you're running on more than 3gb of memory then try starting with -maxmem=2047. If you're running on 2gb try -maxmem=1024.Other than that, you mentioned setting a manual page size, if you do, make sure your page file size is set to Initial size=1.5 times your amount of ram (IE : 1gb ram = 1536mb) and set maximum size=3 times amount of ram.
Alternatively you can set 2 page files if you have more than one physical hard drive, each page file on a different partition (each partition being on a different physical hard drive), in which case each page file should be set to 1.5 times your amount of ram.
Yeah, i've got the page file on a separate physical drive to both the OS and the game install. Doesn't make a jot of difference.

:yay:The mighty Copy n Paste worked
Still... 64bit Vista is the way forward methinks
Yeah, got a PC rebuild being delivered tomorrow with a fresh copy of Vista 64/Windows 7 upgrade.
Fingers crossed it all goes smoothly..
-
Yep - the MP file was different in each case..It could have been flukey that arma2 CTD within minutes..
Good idea though on the page file - should be memory + 1/2 memory in total (I believe).. Current pagefile 1536.. :o - But I'll make it 4gb.. see what happens..
After all this - could be issues with my CPU or Mobo - after all it's an old machine - but in saying this Ive not had any grief with other recent games I'm currently playing - like Prototype, Spore Galactic Adv, Fallout 3 etc.. (Fairly recent and no issues)..

Yeah, I definitely wouldn't be looking at the CPU though. If anything, i'd say it's potentially a problem with the hard drive controller on the motherboard. I've personally had many issues with the hard drive controller going nuts, from simple read/write problems right up to not recognising drives any more.
The nature of your CTDs is pushing me into the area of attempting to access and manipulate files on the hard drive. Loading textures, loading objects, loading maps even.
Try looking for updated motherboard drivers, especially IDE/SATA and also look at any BIOS updates. Never hurts to keep these as updated as possible.
Also have a look in your Event Viewer and see if you're getting any warnings about HD 0 or HD 1.

Cant be the old RAM - I've installed a complete new set of DDR Ram. (2 x 1GB). I used to have 2 x 512MB DDR RAM (thats been taken out).** Ive checked the Asus user's guide as to which slot I installed the RAM to - I recall that they do have to go into the correct slot - but then again - would XP boot up if they were in the incorrect slot?
I'm running on a Asus K8V Delux SE mobo. It's got 3 DDR memry slots and I've populated the first two slots (each slot 1GB ram).
DIMM slot guide says:
Number of DIMMS DIMM1 DIMM 2 DIMM3 MAX Speed
2 DoubleSide DoubleSide n/a DDR 400
I've actually got them installed in this fashion so I dont think it's the DIMMS.
I genuinely think it's the game that has issues and now not my RAM.

Hmm, that is interesting.
Just confirm for me though that whenever you get the crash, the 'file' is different each time?
For example in the most recent crash post it was co30_Domination_1_00A2T10_West (__CUR_MP) that was mentioned. If this is different each time you get the crash that means there's some other variable we're not considering.
I wonder if it could be something relating to your hard drive and page file. Try removing it the page file and scheduling a hard drive system check, rebooting and then recreating the page file at 4gb (twice the size of the system RAM).
It could be something like a bad sector which can't be read from correctly. Admittedly we're starting to grasp at straws but i'd find it hard to believe that its 100% game code that's at fault as i'm sure we'd see many more instances of CTDs occurring within minutes of playing.
-
does not workDoes the Enter key on the keypad work outside of Arma2?
-
any ideas?Being totally honest, 256mb of VRAM in a game like Arma2 won't cut it without creating problems.
I'm surprised you've persisted with it, thus far.
Not saying that's exactly the reason but when I was running an 856mb VRAM card I saw exactly the same kind of problem because i'd got the in-game graphics settings set too high.
Try reducing all in-game settings to Low and Off where possible and then see if things improve.
-
Well. All that done the patch still throws a wobbler on every PBO(this includes the ones I downloaded at work)I have a feeling this could be a windows fuckup. I have just noticed boot.ini is missing from msconfig and its not letting me chkdisk either... Ive tried a few fixes but nothing doing. Im not really happy to do another XP installation (The system came with XP HE, I've reformatted and gone with XP Pro) I'll have a fiddle tonight and if I get no luck I'm taking the system into work and I'll get the techies to stick a copy of Vista on there see if that makes a difference.
As for memtest one scan threw up a fault, another didnt, I've since reset the ram and am trying again.
But like I say I'm blaming Bill for this one
Yeah, i'd be thinking the same. Still, one step closer and good luck with Vista!
-
Ok. So i get the receiving error. Like so many others. Flushing extends the amount of time before crash. But I only get it in multiplayer. Why? if there is a graphical memory leak, why would it only affect my multiplayer games? Here's my thoughts.
It's because in Multiplayer games, you typically respawn back at the base on a regular basis within the same game session and I believe that the Arma2 client texture management is out of whack and is reloading the same textures every time you respawn. The reason why I think this is that in Singleplayer when you restart/reload, the entire thing is rerendered. Essentially you're starting over.
I've definitely noticed that the more I respawn the longer it takes for the geometry and graphics at the base to load back up. It gets slower and slower until I get to the stage where, for example the ammo box pile is just 3-4 solid brown rectangles with no detail of the box. Slowly over the course of maybe 2-3 seconds they finally render as an ammo box but you can see each layer of the object applied.
Eventually, when the arma2.exe hits 1gb+ of physical RAM usage the entire thing goes mental with stretched, flashing textures all over the place apart from when looking directly at the ground or the sky. And that's when it CTDs.
-
third person view is enabled, im playing on recruit. How odd.
Perhaps a problem with your keypad? External to Arma2, can you use the keypad Enter button?
-
Okies..I went out today and got myself 2 x 1GB memory sticks - installed in PC (no issues there) - launched ARMA2 - joined a MP game - and within a few minutes got a CTD. (Detailed Below)

Well to be sure I'll need to memtest my new memory - depends how this checks out - could be looking at other possibilities??
- Mobo issue?
- OS (XP) issue?
- Driver Issue?
- Conflicting (loaded) software?
- Issue with the server I'm connecting to (1PARA...) as I always get a good game on that server..
Wierd thing is, I never got CTD's when I had the 'Receiving' issue - usually pressing 'M' 9 times out of 10 I'd get back in game.. After lowering my Video Ram settings - I found I could play for longer (with the message) but now CTDs.
Tonight ARMA2 didnt stay up long...
On the plus side - sticking 2GB in my PC has made a noticable difference to the OS speed.. :) (yay).. it needed it anyway... 1Gb just doesnt cut it nowerdays..
If this is an Application issue (from what other people are posting) - then I'll just have to grun and bear it whilst BI (attempt) to fix it. (Fingers X).

The obvious thing here mate is that you still have the original 1gb RAM in there. All you've done is added another 1gb?
If so, you potentially still have dodgy RAM. I'd remove the original 1gb and attempt to run the game using the new 1gb.
Also don't forget, if the RAM is dual channel make sure that each stick goes into the correct RAM slot.

The reason why i'm still going down the dodgy RAM road is that you're crashing in a matter of minutes. I do get CTDs which I firmly believe is due to a memory leak but only after 30 mins to an hour in Multiplayer.
That you still get crashes with 2gb, within a matter of minutes is surely an indicator that something else is amiss.

Hi all, I don't have that many issues with the game other then that I can't seem to switch to 3rd person view while on foot or in vechicles. I'm pressing "Enter" on the numlock keys and by the keyword as well just as the instructions stated but I can't switch views and its making it a pain to control vehicles in 1st person.Unless i'm mistaken, some Multiplayer games have 3rd person disabled (server setting) and the higher difficultly levels might do as well for the Singleplayer game.
Anyone confirm the latter?
-
I'm sure this has been said before but, the game probably has a serious memory leak that's why performance drops over time.Yeah, it's a sure-fire thing.
-
I have noticed that arma2 can sometimes still be running in the background after a CTD.I checked task manager and arma2 is still using cpu resources after it has CTD.
This game is unbelievable!
To be fair, that's potentially not the fault of the Arma2 client.
Vista has many problems around processes failing and then being in a state where they cannot be destroyed, requiring a system reboot.
I've personally had and continue to have this exact issue with Chrome and Firefox on Vista 32. What's worse is, most of the time you cannot then restart the application without a system reboot.
-
I went form Seven to XP, and there was a noticeable increase in performance.Yeah but for how long?
When I fire the Arma2 client up, after a fresh reboot it runs beautifully with almost all in-game settings set to Very High.
After about 30 mins of MP gaming, it's slowed down so that its about half the performance and then it will CTD.
I think there's a lot more to statements of performance in Arma2 than just "Its faster". What we should do is start to collate all this information with a standard set of criteria such as...
PC Spec
OS
Resolution
In-game settings
Out-game settings
Performance in MP - First 30 mins
Performance in MP - Subsequent 30 mins
Performance in SP - One Mission - First 30 mins
Performance in SP - One Mission - Subsequent 30 mins
Or something along those lines. That way we can start to analyse the results and start to put a picture together of where the common break points are. Otherwise all we'll continue to see are statements like this one, that without any context are meaningless.

i would wait for a dx11 card from ATI this october.I'd not waste my time.
In the first instance, if DX10 is anything to go by the majority of devs will not pickup DX11 in the numbers required to validate the purchase on that fact alone.
Secondly, he's after a low-cost card and we all know that when first gen hardware gets released it costs and arm and a leg.
No, don't waste any time waiting. An Nvidia 260 will easily see him through 1-2 further generations of video cards without needing an upgrade and will cost about 1/3 or 1/4 of the cost of the next gen cards later this year.
-
Just how long did it take to get DX9 running stable? I will not even think about DX11 yet.I can see your point but i've got an Nvidia 295 which is DX10 compatible and I have a number of games that take advantage of that fact.
Be a bit daft for me to revert back to Win XP and lose the extra graphical flair that DX10 affords me.
-
Yes, for some reason booting in safe mode made it work  very odd. And it was installed direct from the DVD, it did take almost 45 minutes though. However I am having even more problems with the patch. I've tried 7 different copies of it (one I know for certain works) and every PBO throws up an error
Anyway today I'm updating the chipset on the mobo, Sata drivers, and maybe even BIOS if it comes to it.
Good luck, let us know how it goes mate.
-
This proofs once again my theory not to install Vista on my lovely XP computer. :dance1:Yeah but for those who have a DX10 capable video card, staying on XP is tantamount to cutting off a reason why we have DX10 capable cards in the first place.
Maybe the DX10 on XP hack i've heard about might actually come to fruition at some point but with DX11 not far off...
-
You could dual boot ... now where's my old XP disk .... lolThis might sound like a daft question but do you have any links or help with setting up dual-boot? In all my time using PCs i've never bothered with it but with compatibility problems and the like I guess it doesn't hurt to have an option.
Any help is much appreciated.
-
Even i get constant CTDs which i didnt get with Arma 1 so please dont tell us its our PCs or our hardware faults. It clearly isnit.Woah there.
You need to make the distinction between two potentially different situations...
- 1: That a CTD occurs due to a memory leak, which I experience every single time in Multiplayer
and - 2: That a CTD can occur due to the client attempting to write game assets (textures, models etc) to potentially faulty memory addresses.
I completely agree that the Arma2 client engine needs massive amounts of work but coming from 11 years as a software tester I can assure you that what might be obvious isn't always accurate.
To get a clear picture, remove all other potential problems. That's the first step when attempting to troubleshoot.
- 1: That a CTD occurs due to a memory leak, which I experience every single time in Multiplayer

The simplest and most current solution is to replay/play ArmA 1!! :)With my Core i7/GTX295/Win7RC/6Gig rig i get horrible unplayable stuttery performance with ArmA II....
...30 FPS would be fine if it were consistent, but YUK, its not! ...
...even the opening menu aircraft carrier automated fly-past is JUDDERVISION! ....
...But on ArmA 1 (Version 1.16 Beta) i can max everything out and its super smooth, with incredible view distance and terrain complexity, and no balance issue with AI seeing through eye-candy-ridiculous long grass which i can't do!
OK, its not the perfect solution, but will tie you over.
It was a pleasure to return to the smoothness of Arma 1 in fact.
Enjoy
PS BIS, please let us know when we can return to ArmA II, thanks!
Well, i'm running a C2D@3.2/GTX295/Vista32/2Gig with all in-game settings set to Very High (inc AA) apart from Post Processing and the menu attract mode with the carrier runs flawlessly at 1920x1200.
However, I run with Raptor 10k RPM HDs with the OS and Page on different physical drives to the game install and I also use Ultimate Defrag to move my Arma2 install folder to high performance (outside of the drive disc).
In addition i've installed the EVGA SLI patch.
-
It may not be your memory.I can run memtest without any faults and my I can't play arma2 without CTD.
No other game does this.
I have a core i7920, GTX295 and 6GB RAM.
The game has problems, wait until they fix it.
I also get CTDs but his arma2.exe is blowing up around game assets which indicates the possibility that when attempting to write to a specific, potentially faulty memory address it's crashing.
CTDs, just FYI occur for me when the client physical RAM exceeds 1gb. There's nothing associated with specific game assets with the crash.
-
where can I change that auto-restart setting?Right-click My Computer > Properties > Advanced System Settings > System Failure disable 'Automatically Restart'.
arma 2 crashes hard and fast, R.I.P. arma 2!!!

First up, not everyone is experiencing such a huge amount of failure. Me included.
It's clear that there's something fundamentally wrong if you're CTDing after a few minutes of gameplay and then start to get missing script errors.
Tried a complete unintall and reinstall/patch yet? If there were something fundamentally wrong with the Arma2 code i'm sure we'd all be getting exactly the same problem so start to eliminate the obvious and that will give you a clearer picture.
