try that in your config and you can also set the arma2.cfg properties, attribute to read only.
Cheers mate but I checked that after my last attempt and it read the same IIRC.
2/3 through reinstalling Arma2 now after a complete driver uninstall/cleansweep and system-wide 'Arm' search and resulting folder/file deletion.
This should now be exactly the same as my initial Arma2 install. If this doesn't work I don't have a clue what else it could be...

Dammit, I still have the problem and what's worse, for some reason Arma2 has retained the in-game settings from the previous install. I was sure i'd nuked all the areas.
Can someone tell me where Arma2 stores every single one of its Configuration-type files?

Just tried this mate and it makes no difference.
TBH at this stage i'm extremely fucking annoyed. I had this game working the best that it can without Patch 3 and all i've done is lowered the in-game settings and now I can't raise them back up again.
---------- Post added at 08:04 PM ---------- Previous post was at 07:41 PM ----------
Brilliant. So i've messed about with the in-game settings for a bit, restarting the client every time and now I can't raise Texture and Video Memory above Low! Low is the only option I have available....
-
what are your view distances? if they are high(4000?) you will be pushed down on your settings...Default Arma2 install was 1500 and I couldn't change above Normal. I then upped that to 3500 and still found I couldn't change them up.
It's odd how the Video Memory has been capped, though. That does kinda indicate that Arma2 isn't correctly identifying my 295 as having two GPUs but i've installed the SLI 'patch'.
I guess the next step is to uninstall the Nvidia drivers, cleansweep them off the system, reboot and reinstall completely afresh.
-
i'm having the same problem... tried to manually push the settings to high or very high via .cfg but without results. or rather, without improvements. my cards should be able to handle it. i'm not too sure about reverting to 182.50 b/c of, primarily, SLI support for the game. any ideas?i7 920 2.66ghz
2x n260gtx 896MB SLI (both on x16 PCI-E)
Sadly I must now count myself as one of those affected by this.
All I did was lower my in-game settings to the ArmaII-Mark 'standard' of 1680x1050 and Normal. Ran the benchmark, got some results and compared them. Then I tried to put my settings back to Very High and both Texture Detail and Video Memory have been capped at 'Normal'.
I've uninstalled Arma2 and reinstalled, without success. I've also reinstalled the same Nvidia drivers 186.18 (without cleaning down first) and reapplied the Nvidia SLI patch, again without success.
Any ideas, anyone?
-
Well, my opinion is that this isn't anything to do with overclocking. I've had this very same error using a rig that wasn't OC'd in any way whatsoever. In my case it was fixed by using the SLI 'patch'.
Low GPU temps are a surefire sign that OC'ing isn't the cause anyway. If a GPU isn't running hot then that can't be the reason the GPU falls over.
No, my opinion is that OC might exacerbate the problem, likely due to loading assets into GPU VRAM too quickly for the client to garbage collect in time. By scaling back the hardware you're artificially throttling its capability and that's what's slowing down the crash. You'll likely still get it but it will take longer.
All IMHO of course.

I have reinstalled the game and updated to the new 190 beta drivers.I am now CTD with a blak background.
I have now given up on the game as there is no point progressing through a game that CTD at any time.
core i7 920,
GTX295,
6GB RAM.
Thanks all and I hope the next patch sorts this.
Sounds like the classic Nvidia Driver 'Not Responding' which is in my experience directly related to the memory leak in the client.
Regular client restarts can obviously offset this, as well as in-game 'FLUSH' usage but there's still no guarantee of it not crashing.

Hello allBought Arma 2 like so many on release praying for the ultimate soldier sim and hated playing my waste of £25 game. After reading through as many posts as i can I have either fixed or learnt to put up with most bugs BUT the one I carnt get round is on most levels in play my character ie cooper will strafe right 2 steps when i am moving forward at random times. In a vehicle this is a sharp right turn (Normally right at the nearest tree). My PC is last years spec but I am a smooth game play over eye candy player ie bf2 style and I am pulling my hair out on this one.
Any help would be appreciated from this seasoned gamer.
Shot in the dark but do you have a controller attached to your PC like a flight stick or steering wheel? Friend of mine had very similar behavior in other games and it turned out to be his flight stick under the desk pushing very slightly against the PC case.
Also make sure you don't have anything jammed into the keys near the strafe buttons.

Update - I ran a memtest86+ v2.11 soak overnight (9+ hours) - NO Errors reported - 2GB Memory 100% OK..** So my final thoughts on the matter is that it's the game that doing it.. or else if it was my memory I'd be seeing other wierd stuff on my other games (which probably thrash my system in CPU, GPU & memory terms also but they are more stable).. It's Arma2 issue - it's a pile of junk at the moment!!!!! (well for MP as I've not really got into SP)..
** Like any software it's going to be buggy.. and I have to accept that.. I just hope BI get round to fixing it as it kinda spoils the overall experience.. especially whensome co-ops take a few hours to complete and with the damn ranking system, if youre kicked out, you get busted back to Private.
I'd Like to thank forum members for the help the have provided me (esp. Private Plowjoy)..
Regards
Lima-14
You're very welcome, mate. When a game offers as much as Arma2 does, i'm happy for every single person I can offer some help to.

Little update on the situation. I haven't had any problems with Arma 2 but yesterday I bought a new ADSL modem/router (Belkin FD58633au4A) and now everytime I try to connect to a MP game it gets to "receiving data" then CTD's.I'll reinstall my old router to see if the problem vanishes, and if so then I should be able to figure out the problem soon (at least on the multiplayer side)
Forgot to mention that the crash happens under XP, Vista and Windows 7 (Running Steam Arma 2)
---------- Post added at 12:23 PM ---------- Previous post was at 11:09 AM ----------
Update : I located the problem. My new router was set (by default) to block all external icmp's (pings from the server) disabling the block fixed the problem, haven't had a ctd since
That's pretty odd but I guess there could be something there that ends up 'Not Responding' and manifests as a CTD.
Well, thankfully you're up and running and that's what counts!

Yes I have to return feeling rather embarrassed and foolish. I now have it set at an acceptable fps, although it looks like something a 7 year old has drawn :p But the gamepleay is what it's all about for me :) I have to thank those for pointing out my stupidity, i know it's hard but if you could please resist berrating me :p haha i know i deserve it. hey ho thanks for the helpWe've all done it mate. Gone in there, full-tilt and end up disappointed we can't run at max FPS.
Happy you can at least play. Enjoy and be sure to give CTI and Evo a go, in Multiplayer. Great fun!

That's what they're counting on.You're in denial.People are blindly hoping that this patch will solve everything.Any problem that's not fixed, people will just say, the list isn't complete.Look at arma 1, we're on patch 1.16 (beta) and problems still exist.
Superfast's post above is spot on.
I'm not in denial. 11 years of working as a software tester has actually acutely honed my expertise, when dealing with problems in software and expectations on what developers can deliver.
I also know precisely how software houses work when making fix lists public. On the one hand, you want everyone to know you're actively working to address the problems but on the other you don't want to over-promise and under-deliver. You cannot please everyone all of the time. As proven in this very thread.
In any case, you're speculating. It's guesswork. They've presented a incomplete list of Patch content. In effect, work in progress.
You and I have similar standpoints. Neither of us can say what will be fixed above and beyond what was listed, which makes anything else pure speculation.
I don't think for a second that the next Patch will solve 'everything'. I'm too old and too grizzled to believe that. But if it addresses part of the problems, just some of them then i'm happy. BIS have proven that they're dedicated to the game and for me, that's good enough. For now.

I see keanez fix has worked for a few people but they need to lower there graphics settings to play. First i would like to thank him and everyone who is taking the time to try and fix the problem.I think i will wait and pray for a patch to fix the problem though. I think it is BS that i need to lower my settings to play the game half as well as i should beable to play it.
I have played Arma II for 3-4 Hours with no problems(Good FPS and Outstanding Graphics). I exited the game for awhile and came back to play a few hours later. After about 20-30min of gameplay it locked up but the sound was still going. It happens everytime i try to play now.
I was playingwith all settings on high with no problems for the first 3-4 hours and For some reason it keeps freezing now though.
I got this new system for Arma II and other new games coming out in the future.
Intel® Core™ i7 920 Processor (4x 2.66GHz/8MB L3 Cache)
Asus P6T SE Intel X58 Chipset CrossFire Supported w/7.1 Sound, Triple-Channel DDR3, Gb LAN, S-ATA Raid, USB 2.0, Triple PCI-E )
6 GB [2 GB X3] DDR3-1600 Triple Memory Module Corsair or Major Brand )
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 260 896MB w/DVI + TV Out Video )
And i am using windows 7
Once again thanks to everyone trying to fix the problem. There have been a new trend of games being released unplayable. I wonder what happens from final beta testing to release that screws them up soooo bad.
I don't want to alarm you but you should be aware that I had to RMA my new Asus motherboard (Ramage II GENE) yesterday because of that exact problem. Partial lockup, not just in Arma2 but randomly doing anything. Sometimes it would last an entire evening, sometimes it would lock after 2 mins of being on the desktop.
Initially I was unable to add all 12GB of my RAM because slot A2 caused the reported memory to go ape whenever a DIMM was stuck into it. So, I kept only three sticks of RAM in slots A1, B1 and C1, 6GB in total for Triple Channel and then had all these problems with partial lockups.
New mobo delivered today. With all the other components exactly the same, is currently doing a Memtest and so far hasn't reported any errors or problems with DIMMs in all 6 slots, successfully reporting 12GB RAM.
The reason why i'm posting this is that you say your system is new. As was mine (delivered and built Tuesday).

in some circles i think i am already officially insane :eek:basically I have tried altering cfg and profile files, i've tried a programme that shuts down all un-neccasery services, programmes etc. I've got latest drivers, patches and the such. I've set compatability to xp. I've reduced visuals (changing which doesn't seem to make much difference at all?!).
I'm at my whits end. I still can only manage around an average of 10-11FPS (according to Fraps) with a maximum of 27.
My system:
Intel core 2 due e8200 2.66GHZ;
1GB Sahpire radeon 4870 HD;
2GB ram;
Running on windows 7 RC build 7100.
Is there anything else i can do or is it time i throw in the towel? Is the game worth keeping or will this stuff eventually be fixed in patches?
Thanks alot for any help in advance.
Regards,
Adam M
What in-game settings are you using? A lot of performance-related problems tend to be self-inflicted because of over-estimation on what a system can handle.
-
Fact is, that well known bugs aren't on that list. There is no reason for them to release an incomplete changelog if they knew they'd be addressing more issues. If some of these bugs were being fixed, make no mistake about it, that they would be on that list.Whilst I agree that it's disappointing not to see any mention of the more drastic issues in that list, we should be aware that the list shows what's been fixed so far.
It's not a summary of all proposed fixes so we should give BIS the benefit of the doubt for the time being.

my specs atmIntel Core 2 Duo E8500 3.1ghz
2 gig ram
8800gt 512mb
Im thinking of upgrading of course 2 4 gig of ram but i also wanna upgrade my GPU to the GTX 285.
But will my system handle it ok or will it bottleneck?
Be fine with that.
-
private plowjoy thank you for help but maybe we are talking about 2 different bugs...it isnt a matter of respawn for me..it happens as soon as the download of the mission files ends or after a couple of time without any respawn...Could you post your spec? I might be able to offer some help.

My computer crash every 5-10 min to blue ERROR screen when i play ArmA 2 can some one help me figure this out why it always happens. :confused:used my cell phone
Processor: AMD Athlon 64x2 dual core processor 6000+ 3 GHz
Memory: 2 GB Ram
Video Card: NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GTS 512
Hard Drive: 300 GB
Operating System: Windows XP
NVIDIA Driver: 186.18
First up, what is the file mentioned on the BSOD?
-
apologies to whoever originally pointed out this file on armaholic:http://www.techspot.com/downloads/4842-game-booster.html
but i really have to say it worked wonders for me. Made a real difference! Give it a go. I can honestly say it is safe hasn't damadged my computer at all :) give it a try and good luck!
It's good that you got some benefit from this but i'd have thought it would only really help if you were borderline on spec and had lots and lots of services and applications loaded up in the background, eating RAM.
Just don't trust these applications that claim to 'speed up' your PC. My experience is that it's just smoke and mirrors.

I've been wondering about this myself.. I'm looking to buy a new Gpu soon, but i don't want to spend too much on one, just for it to bottleneck at my Cpu.I've got an Intel Pentium D 2.8ghz..i would oc it to 3 or more but my bios is locked on the mobo ( damn you packard Bell ).I'm currently using a 9500gt with it.
So can anyone recommend a card that will run well with my processor? or should i upgrade my Cpu first?
IMO, definitely upgrade the CPU first. Unfortunately, it's likely you'll need a new motherboard and memory to go with. Again, it's all about keeping the hardware as parallel as possible and sometimes you won't even have a choice, such as the new motherboard using a different DIMM configuration to your current set of DIMMs.
-
Cheers for quick reply. So does anyone know like a rough break down like....
RAM 20%
CPU 50%
GPU 30%
If you get me drift. that way i know what to spend me money on or split my cash and go for a 50/50 on a low end card and cpu.
Also what part does ram have to play in A2
As said above, there's an inherent system-bottleneck if the video card and CPU get too far apart. The system bus needs to be running at parallel levels, or you'll just end up throttling an expensive GPU down to 2/3 of its potential (for example) and that's a waste of money.
-
it happens in multi for me,sp is fine=it isnt related to video settingsIt absolutely is linked to the in-game graphics settings.
The reason why you get it in Multiplayer is that you're constantly respawning back at the base, so the engine is (IMO) reloading the same objects and textures over and over and over again in the same game-session.
Whereas in Singleplayer, when you die you 'reload' a save point. You're not pushed back to the save point within the same session. That's why we're all seeing degradation of performance in Multiplayer games and hardly anyone is complaining about the same degree of degradation in Singleplayer. It will happen in Singleplayer (probably) but will take so much longer to hit the saturation point that you won't notice it as much, if at all.
The client definitely has a memory leak. No doubt about it. The 'Receiving' bug is IMO when the client attempts to reload/rerender the engine (typically when trying to switch from Map view back to the Game) when it's already at saturation. Most likely associated with the VRAM on the graphics card being full along with the client SYS RAM getting close to its cap too.
That's why if you lower the in-game graphics settings, it will take longer to hit saturation and will seem like a much smoother experience....for a while.

What is ArmA 2 more dependant on cpu or gpu, reason i ask is because im going to upgrade my 7800 gtx's for a single hd4850/4870 1gb.At the moment i have a amd 4800+x2 and noticed that when the going turns in to mass carnage on sceen my cpu is running flat out at 100% so i get system lag.
So will me upgrading my cards take the strain off the cpu or just enhance the mass carnage on screen and still lag.
amd 4800+
2gb xms corsair ram
2 7800gtx's in sli
win xp sp3
Sorry mate but it's a mixture. GPU will give you more/nicer eye-candy but the CPU will handle more intensive AI situations better which of course there's a lot of in Single Player.
-
Sorry silly of me not to put that:Visibility - 3045
texture detail - normal
video memory - default
antriscopic filtering - normal
antialiasing - normal
terrain detail - normal
object detail - normal
shadows - normal
post process - disabled
3 d resolution - 1024 x 768
PhysX - disabled
Another attempt at playing there and I was getting 15-20 fps...right up untill I got killed...game immediately CTD.
Ok, as others have said try dropping AA and AF completely. Definitely reel the Visibility in too as that can have a huge impact.
Shadows are generally a killer, so scale those back too.
Pretty much mate, bring those settings down to Low/Very Low with half the View Distance and it might be workable.
Oh and don't worry about CTDs being something wrong with your system as we're all getting them, irrespective of hardware. Just a matter of time until it occurs.
---------- Post added at 01:27 AM ---------- Previous post was at 01:26 AM ----------
Thanks a lot guys for the replies....those suggestions have helped me a bit in the single player department, will give multiplay another try soon;)Great to hear, congrats!
MP is a real blast when it's not CTDing you. Evo and CTI are great fun! :)

It's the game, only fools would rush out and spend £300 on a new gfx to improve performance lol9800GT should be more than capable, the game just needs some patching to optimise.
I think that's a bit harsh. A £300 gfx card might be expensive but it would definitely last 2-3 generations without needing an upgrade.
Any idea how I can shrink my signature text?
-
Hey guys, been lurking around here a lot more than playing the game unfortunately no matter what I try though this game runs very poor for me.I'm talking real bad fps, like between 10-15 at best, but more often 8-10 and last night on multiplayer actually went down to 1 FPS which was a first....couldnt even move :S
My CPU was reading 52% and Ram 29% at the time. Without a doubt the worst times are online, but it has been in single play at times as well.
I only built this pc a short time ago, and although I cut the corner when I bought the Graphics card I still assumed it would be enough to see me through till I got the cash for something better. The guy in the shop said it would run any game you throw at it...he obviously hadnt heard of Arma 2 lol :P
In fact it has run any game I play with no probs....arma 1 included in that.
Does everything point to this card if my CPU or Ram dont seem to be stressed out? Am I really looking at having to buy another card to play this game or can I get it to run better somehow with what I have?
Any suggestions are appreciated guys...shame, game looks so freakin' good when it does run a bit nice:o:
ps....it be nice if BIS would step up and say something if there's something wrong with the game and they're gonna fix it:confused:
If you can tell us what settings you're running the game at, we can try to help optimize it a little.
In-game settings when set too high can cause a real slowdown in frames.
-
i run 20 fps at highYeah but the problem you're seeing is a classic issue when attempting to load up textures and objects into system RAM then VRAM.
Let me guess, you don't get this straight away? It only happens when you've been playing for a while?
In any case, when you next get this problem hold down SHIFT and MINUS (keypad), let go and then type 'flush' without the apostrophies. The screen will go black and you'll get a message telling you that a FLUSH is in progress. That will force the arma2 client to refresh and you should see an improvement for a while.
ArmA2 8GB RAM Problem
in ARMA 2 & OA - TROUBLESHOOTING
Posted · Edited by Placebo
Just want to chime in here.
I had exactly this problem last night. My story is as follows...
1: On Vista 64bit with all windows updates done, I was running Arma2 with almost all settings on Very High (selected in game).
2: I lowered my resolution to 1680x1050 and lowered all my in-game settings to at best Normal. I did this to fall in line with ArmaII-Mark standards.
3: I ran ArmaII-Mark for an hour, to get my consistent mean results back.
4: I attempted to switch the in-game settings back up to Very High and found that I could not push Texture and Video Memory above Normal.
5: Uninstalled Arma2 and reinstalled. Same.
6: Uninstalled Arma2 and manually removed all leftover files and folders before reinstalling. Same.
7: Uninstalling my Nvidia drivers, cleansweeped and reinstalled. Same.
8: Uninstalled both Arma2 and Nvidia drivers. Performed manual removal of files and folders, alongside multiple cleansweeps and multiple PC restarts. Reinstalled everything. Same.
9: Formatted my C drive and reinstalled Vista 64bit. As soon as the OS was back up, I got the soundcard drivers on there, Nvidia drivers on there and installed Arma 2. SAME RESULT. I could not push Texture and Video Memory above Normal.
10: Uninstalled Nvidia drivers and installed 190.38_desktop_win7_winvista_64bit_english_BETA. Fired up Arma2 and found that whilst I could now select Very High Textures and Video Memory, I had exactly the problem on the screenshot where all the in-game graphics were pretty much flat colour grey and black.
At this stage after spending 4 hours+ trying to get this thing working, I gave up. I was seriously angry and starting a brand new job in 6 hours time....
11: Today, after getting in from the first day in my new job :D I decided i'd do a Windows Update to completion, as I hadn't done that after the Vista 64bit reinstall. After SP2 was installed I thought i'd give the game another try.
LO AND BEHOLD. IT WORKS!
Seriously, I changed nothing else on my system. The Nividia drivers are the same Beta as installed last night. All i've done is Windows Update until there was nothing left to update.
All I can suggest is that you give this a try.
