  1. Hello everyone! First post here for me in 5 years I hope you moderators dont mind me starting a new thread on this old topic, but here's a ling to an older discussion: http://forums.bistudio.com/showthread.php?t=72242&highlight=display+driver+stopped+responding Im just off to bed but think that I might have come up with a solution after spending 2 weeks and hundreds of $ to solve it. Been trying all different software and hardware solutions, but not until tonight have I tried to run games without installing the stand alone sound card (Creative X-fi Extreme gaming) drivers. I use a fresh Vista64 ghost-image to reapply between test changes. I got an HIS 4870x2 gfx card and are running Vista64 bit. As the original thread implies this is a problem for both NVIDIA and ATI users indeed, but maybe sound drivers is the common problem? The catalyst diver pack installs a ATI HDMI driver, that I tonight have used as the sole audio driver (I use an 40" LCD TV as monitor) while doing my usual benchmark of flying around a low altitude in ArmA2 until the error appears (usually coomes after a few minutes to an hour). Now I ran for more than 2 hours without any signs of problems, even tweaked up the graphics to ~95% of whats possible. Well, think I'm on to something and will hold my plans to buy a new MB and gfx card a little. Tomorrow I will try disabling the HDMI function and install my X-Fi as the sole sound hardware. I made searches on google about this, but only found one person mentioning it, and he - DocMartin - had neither seen in mentioned anywhere else: http://forums.amd.com/game/messageview.cfm?catid=260&threadid=104677&STARTPAGE=9&FTVAR_FORUMVIEWTMP=Linear Anyone else suffering from this? Please give your thoughts. Off to bed
  2. Bull, I just copied the topic of the older thread as I expected a continued discussion about this longlasting mysterium - that is happeing to both ATI and NVIDIA users. Of course I had a ATI driver failure message myself :p But my solution of disabling the HDMI (high definition audio on gfx card) device has removed that paticular issue to 100% for me. After that I got other system failures that pointed very strongly towards the graphics card being faulty, and as a new 5970 card that I ordered last week as an option (they are kind of hard to get, so I thought I would just cancel it eventually) turned up yesterday I installed it and.... ARMA2 is now as beautiful, stable and decently quick as I could dream of :) The only problem I encountered after installing drivers was a total system lockup when I initially tried the game with both X-fi sounddrivers and the HDMI device enabled in devicemanager. Once again disabled the HDMI and now it runs like a dream for hours in row. Indeed the performace boost is not gigantic with the 5970 compared to my 18 months old 4870x2 card, and arguably not worth the huge pricetag  But running the game at almost maximum settings with the -winxp -maxmem=2047 commands (I also got default clocked 3.16Ghertz core2duo and 4 gig ram) I feel happy to keep it anyway. Damn, the card runs at almost idle temperatures no matter what I load in ArmA2 - maximum fanspeed has been 30%, haven't tacked activity level yet. But I will indeed check my luck on a warranty claim on the 4870x2 also. Now I'm of to check out other games -and I dont expect any other game being more demanding than ArmA2, would be hugely surprised if I get any more stability problems running anything now.

Hello, Once again idle-browsing around here, I could'nt help noticing how empty Göteborg (in Swedish!  - Gothenburg for you english types) is on the map. And thought that since I am a faithful member - in my own way - of this great community, I have to bring some glory to the Swedish west coast  So, please add me to Gothenburg, Sweden

    The Iraq thread 4

<s>Maybe noone here has met him in person, but if I recall it right Pins-Da'Smoka (or how he spells his nick name) is stationed in Mosul... It was the first thing that came to my mind when reading about the 22 dead at the base.</s> EDIT: I did a search for PiNs_Da_Smoka and found that he has written "No longer in Iraq....so....ya know....yay.... ;-) " in his signature But otherwise I share the view of bn880 and denoir that it don't feels very 'rewarding' (personally or globally) to care much about the war in Iraq anymore. Especially not since the one ultimately responsible for the war recently got honoured with another 4 years (not because of hte Iraq war indeed - but due to great things like the 'war on terror' + abortion, homosex and stemcell-research phobia). My stance on Iraq these days has rather crossed the border to the lands of hopelessness and apathy, while it since late 2002 until Bush's reelection only were close to that border...

    Return of the king

Personally I think the ending is quite decent - but then I have also waited 17 years (read the triology when I was 13) for a good reproduction of the books.... Lets put it this way: the long ending makes up quite a decent farewell to this dream come true - that the movies after all are for most fans of Tolkiens works.

    Return of the king

Hello everyone Just came home after watching the extended version of Return of the king (with some friends & great home cinema equipment), and I got to say: I'm very satisfied at last! If the original cinema version was, lets say, 40% perfect - then the extended version is maybe 85% perfect!! Its only 48 minutes added, but not many frames of the movie are left unchanged - especially the light-setting is greatly improved, many many scenes are longer and make more sense + alot of new great scenes. I was still a little disappointed with ~5 minutes when Legolas still is glued to the Olifant + some other scenes around that... But still probably the best movie I have ever seen! As for the triology as a whole, the 2:nd DVD disc of The two Towers (except when Legolas (again) goes down the stairs on the shield) + the first disc of Return of the King combined is simply the most perfectly made piece of media I can ever dream to experience Â

Annan for President! Iraq war illegal, says Annan Well, he's not alone in hoping........ He has been quite harsh before, but this I think is the first time he called the preemptive invasion of Iraq illegal.

    The Middle East part 2

Something that also the English national (football) team führer - Sven Göran Ericsson - has found out. He has started coaching the Israeli/Palestinian "Peace Team" consisting of 8 Palestinian & 8 Israeli boys + their respective 'sub coaches', instead of the English senior lads  http://www.gothiacup.se/eng....&Id=102 If you want to see him during the opening ceremony of the just started youth football tournament "Gothia Cup" here in Gothenburg (and also fail to understand what Svennis and the journalist says in Swedish ), then look at the video on this page: http://svt.se/svt/jsp/Crosslink.jsp?d=10694&a=230304 btw, this is how most of us Swedes look like right now, but maybe this particular guy is motivated to hurry up from the mud to meet the Greek girls EDIT- Fixed image links since they just uploaded the 04 opnening ceremony pics - still can't find a pic of Svennis with the team though.

Oh my fucking GOOOOd! Greece did it!!!!!!!!    And the Portugese went down to HELLAS!  Congratulationis and maybe also Dankinis to the probably not so unimportant King OTTO  I just came home, and at once recieved a phonecall from my brother who arrived today for a 2 week holiday on Crete (that bastard ). We tried to call him right after the match, but did not get connected. He told me that just seconds after the final signal they executed massive fireworks in central Rethimnon were he saw the match (well, he did not really see the match - but 'got the picture' from the audiences at the overfilled tavernas  ). And the party goes on......... Since I drove him and his girlfriend to the airport, I got to borrow his BMW while they are away (well, that's something to compensate for the suffering after all ), and took the way past the Avenue here in Gothenburg on my way home from the match and gave the celebrating Greeks some good honking, and stopped for a cigarette there to share their joy - even though they were not very many left actually as I passed soon after midnight  ooohhhh damn...... How nice would it not be to be down there now, the party of centuries i hot Greece, while us left with this shitty Swedish summer (the worst I can remember) that fail to deliver temperatures over 20 degrees celicius, but lots of rain..........  Â

It was perjury..... Yeah, whatever - but you got my point. hey, he or whatever said all.... And my point was that US presidents dont get what they deserve (when starting a war of agression against, or for serious involvement leading to many peoples death in, Iraq for exampel), like some others do......

Thinking about how depressed one can be from TBA's foreign policies and warmongering, take a look here if you dare: http://www.flashpoint1985.com/cgi-bin....st=3360 Some of the greatest jokes of all times on this forum can be found there (the very best jokes staring on post no 8 by Oligo with an answer to an ongoing discussion about banning landmines or not), but be warned - there really was a good reason for cheering up in those days, and going there could bring back some nasty vibrations  Â

    UEFA Euro 2004

Well, HUGE congratulations Hellas   Even though I must say that I was just as shocked after yesterdays match as after the match against France..... Me reflecting alot about rigid, stereotype rationalities as part of what I'm currently doing, ofcourse had to reflect over how hard it is to overcome that 'the great -reputed- teams should almost always win' rational  But as I also know, the 'Globalisation of football' quickly results in teams performance evening up globally, due to spreading of 'winning concepts' and other knowledge. I got no problem with that, as long as there is some beauty and charm left in most matches - except for when I'm stuck in old rationals that is And I'm a little jealous of my oldest brother who will go to Crete on sunday for a two week holiday. What an incredible timing - those two weeks will probably be the best weeks one could spend in Greece for decades, at least if Greece wins    Regarding that more technology should be integrated in football to get more just refereeing, I got some bad vibrations in sight. A German company has already developed and tested an electronic sensor-system, with sensors around the pitch, in the ball and on the players...... If that first step is taken, footballplayers will probably be dressed in special full-body-coverage-dresses in a few decades, and then just more and more  I think that one of the many great things about football is that as it is now, poor kids in an African village can play football under almost the same conditions as the great players do during a World Cup. With more and more technology, it will probably not 'be the same game' that the spontaneous players can play out on the grubble square (sp? ), as is played in 'the great leagues/tournaments'. And that is taking away a dimension from football IMO. Once the first step is taken, the next will come in no time.......... Â

Nice reading shinRaiden (even though I don't remember the names of all those institutions for 5 seconds ) I just hope that you don't take my post all too seriously, because of waht I'll write below. An awful lot of the kind of can and could indeed. But as we all know a modern US president will only risk impeachment if he has sex in outside the merriage and lie about it in TV Â Â Lying in TV for months to get a war, that makes a president a HERO And if you are sceptical about how anyone could suspect Bush & co of lying to get the war - just look at the fact that the biggest global antiwar demonstrations since the Vietnam war took place on February 15 2003 (in which several members here participated in, me included). Maybe if the USA would accept the ICC, Bush would have a chance of getting his rightful punishment, even though no chance of facing death. But as it is now step no.1 in your (very good indeed, if its correct) 'road to capital punishment explanation' could never be executed due to a majority of Republicans in the congress IIRIR. Â WTF are you writing? Â I can't be assed to get the dictionary, but I suppose you mean that there is no reason for me being an ass. But I have no problems complaining about some idiots that put mine and billions of other humans hope of the (a) future on stake........ As a matter of fact, the Bush administrations foreign policy has made me very depressed sometimes, making the future look all black - and for that I'm all for giving him a good spank myself Â

In all fairness, if its so obvious that Saddam should be killed no matter what - then Bush and co. should surely be sentenced to death too - after all they share similar crimes, like starting a war of aggression and torture etc. Also previous US administrations should be sentenced to death since they are very closely involved in the majority of Saddams killings: -Letting down the Shia & Kurdish uprising. -The acceptance of Saddams gasing of ~5000 Kurds. -Prolonging the war and supplying boith sides during the Iran-Iraq war. -& (correct my if I'm wrong here) being the major power pushing for the most brutal sanctions ever put on a country. -etc This makes me remember to chance back to my old sig again, since the Swedish guys has gone home from a wonderful football tournament. I will probably continue using this poor sig until Bush and Blair is hanging high enough to make all future attemps of preemtive war, based on lies, impossible (at least from what is called 'the civilized world ' )

The American media is crap, so is most other. Im not calling the people you listed animals, it's the terrorist. Wait a sec, they are not animals that is being to nice, no they are worse. they are like a virus, maybe uh one of those that is hard to cure, but can be done, or something? hmmm.... *** Disclaimer: I'm not in any way defending, or in favor of, killings of civilians, beheadings, kidnappings etc. *** Please remember that terrorist is nothing but a word, a label, to be put on humans of ones liking (or indeed disliking ). One, who you probably think is too soft anyway, who has understood this is Dick Cheney: http://www.bushpresident2004.com/cheney.htm According to FBI's definition of terrorism - - anyone that is not a nationstate and does something bad is a terrorist. Just change the word unlawful to lawful if you happen to be a nationstate, and you have a definition of war. If you lived during each of the corresponding timeperiods, chances are big that you would view people from former Sovjet, Vietnam, Germany and Japan as non-humans. An enemy must always be alienated, dehumanised, in a war - and media is the channel that spread it. btw, I dont really see the difference between militia groups operating in Iraq that is kidnapping people, and the coalition collecting masses of prisoners (who to 95% in the end is revealed to be innocent IIRIR). Except for the reasons to deprive these people of their freedom (symbolism/blackmailing respective information/detainment), it's the same in principle.

Yes if it takes a few beheadings, then so be it. These terrorist are no more than animals anyways. I am being serious, they are closer to animals than humans. Yeeeeeehaaaaad! The American media has done it! Â I promise you, they are very human......... Just like the Sovjets, Vietnamese and Japans turned out to be..... Go and see if you can find old Adolf..... Shuld be consistent thinking about the current direction of American political 'development' Â

Congratulations Holland'ers; Dutch'ers & Netherland'ers Was a pretty good match for being a 0-0 match now, don't ya think? They will probably have to exchange those goal-cages after this  Let the ones who play the most happy & beautiful football win! Someone said that it's a pity that all 'great football nations' are out, since that would result in boring football in the semi's and final..... Well how often do 'great teams' really play very entertaining?? I'm looking forward towards a great challange between the remaining 'underdog' teams  FOOOOOOOORRRRRZZZAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!

    UEFA Euro 2004

Well said  I'm actually not happy at all, and indeed not sad either - rather indifferent.. The Swedish guys played so poorly in this match that they did not really deserve to go through. But not worse than the Italians indeed, and those bad losers did derserve a ticket home - could have been nice to have them left in the tournament though, as they could play as good as they did against Sweden against Netherlands/Germany and England/Portugal... But if one don't beat Bulgaria with at least 5-0 (in which case they would have been through).... I really do hope so (the part about Sweden, Denmark-Czech Republic can be a real nice match too ). Now Sweden will play Netherlands/Germany in the 1/4 final and England/Portugal in semi - only to have a really hard time agaist France in the final  But seriously, I would reather see the Swedish team go home today than to see them playing as embarrasing in the next match - they showed great potential in the first matches, but in this they were shitty to say the least   Poteltially the Swedish guys can play the most happy and lively football in the tournament and go for the final - but today Edman got his 2:nd yellow and that means that the Swedish defence continues to be weak. Lets just hope that the Swedish offence once again gives away millions of huge, amazed, smiles all over Europe   btw, congratulations Greece for advancing!  I have often wondered why the Greeks are not joining the big tournaments since I know the football interest there is big and their neighbouring countries have been rather well representated (Turkey maybe only lately? ).. Now go and give those French guys some good spanking Â

    UEFA Euro 2004

Damn, I'm still so tense since the match...  Really, Italy played extremely good during a few minutes here and there (generally much better than Sweden until Kim Källstöm came in) - can anyone give me a hint of the last time Italy played that good? I mean, in some situations it was like 5 Zidane's in the midfield, never letting the ball futher than 5 millimeters from their feets, and passing with a 5 millimeter precision to their teammates feets     I guess they prepared themselves very well, and definitely did not underestimate Sweden. They did not publish their lineup until last minute (something that they very rarely do, or even never has done before (cant remember exactly what the commentators said))... What great fotball they played, I dont think Sweden will survive a knockout match against such a well playing team - that could possibly be France, or Italy again in the final  (don't think any other team will play so good in this tournament). Had they not backed home (as the (stupid) bastards always do when leading with tiny 1-0) in the second half Sweden would have been slaughtered!! And what good goalkeepers there are in group C: Isaksson, Buffon, Sörensen.... with Buffon's save against Jonson's hard shot probably the best - just incredible    Possible teams that can stop Sweden from winning this tournament, in addition to a greatplaying Italy or France, is Netherlands or Spain IMO, if they get their shit together (won't play as fantastic as Italy today though). Quite possible is also Germany indeed... England??? HA!!! not a chance! Â

    UEFA Euro 2004

Hello everyone! Long time no post (again  )  I just feel so good. Maybe because I just came home after watching a match with some energy - Germany-Netherlands did have its charm! But probably most because the Swedish team has played the greatest art of football so far - now that everyone has played - IMO  And I'm not the slightest surprised over the Swedes performance, rather relieved to see that they really are as good as I thought (after a mediocre first 10-15 minutes). I would indeed be very surprised if we don't see any more of that in this wonder of the (my) world - Euro 2004!  Underbart, härligt, WOW - swap swap!!!!! And probably also since that bloody *********** Woolnough from the Brittish tabloid paper Daily Star got to eat some of his shit   Here is a link to the first encounter between SVT commentator (and former IFK Göteborg goalie) Thomas Wernerson and him (in swedish) - and if you search for 'Woolnough' on this page you can see movie clips from their encounters (in english). But I'm not really a Swedish patriot (and don't bet on results  - its hard enough trying to objectively enjoy all the wonderful football without it - football is not about results, its about beauty and joy IMO), and if the Swedish team, after all, manage to play bad and boring football, then they can piss off!  May the ones who play the most beautiful and happy football win!!!  But GO FOR IT Henke, Zlatan, Kimpa, Ljungberg, Chippen, Svensson, Isaksson, Jakobsson........  Â

    War against terror

I don't know if you have managed to miss the "Project for the New American Century" (most often refered to as "PNAC") website. Journalists and critics refer to it frequently when talking about TBA's agenda. I view it, sligtly exagerrated, as the 'Mein Kamph II' website. Here you can read a short text on their agenda + agreeing members of the organisation like Dick Cheney, Donald Rumsfeld, Paul Wolfowitz & Jeb Bush: Statement of Principles And I agree with what bn880 & Akira wrote. I think its very consistent and logical for TBA to have had wet dreams about a 'new Pearl Harbour' for their agenda. And if they ignored the warnings, one can only hope that they underestimated the amplitude of 9/11 - and not cynically reasoned 'one have to break some eggs to make an omelett' (moreover a frequent rational among Bush supprters in defence of the war in Afghanistan & Iraq). I have thought about posting this link once again when reading your discussions about the latest 9/11 scandal during the last week. But felt it is probably well known to everyone already, but maybe it is'nt? Here is the only 'official' statement connected to TBA that I know of that intimates that these neoconservatives had reason to welcome 9/11: "Further, the process of transformation, even if it brings revolutionary change, is likely to be a long one, absent some catastrophic and catalyzing event - like a new Pearl Harbor." The quote is taken from page 51 of PNAC's main document, published in September 2000: Rebuilding America's Defenses: Strategy, Forces and Resources For a New Century Add to that statements from Condolezza Rice in March 2000, when she probably had a bad day and slipped her tounge: "We need a common enemy to unite us." "We need a new threat as a marker to where we will lead." Source

    'mourning sickness'

I do not agree with the articles 'substitute for releigion' focus, but I do agree that it partly fills a similar function. I do not usually make generalistic 'truth claims', but the fact is that all things living (humans, animals and even in some small degree vegetables & probably Aliens  ) need some kind of concieved order & meaningfulness to survive. Completely deprived from it the body will go into a state of chock and die in no time. Religion is one kind of belief-system that adds to many other, even for the most hardcore religious fundamentalist I recon. The ones of us that lives in secular nationstates and consider ourselves as ateists simply have other things that gives that to us. OK, enough of obvious rambling.... but even the 'nihilist' get order and meaningfulness from believing in everything and nothing. And now to my point that is in the spirit of Frisbee's post: Beliefsystems and identity is very closely related and can hardly be separated I recon. There are many kinds (levels/layers) of identities one could speak of for sure, but the one I'm thinking about in relation to this thread is of the bigger scale - like national identity. On this level its very much about concieved differences - us and them. I became furious, and still is, over the World press photos of the year selection. In my interpretion to a very high degree related to identity and a wish to maintain us & them. The link here is ofcourse what Frisbee called 'selective mourning'. It was what filled my mind when during last monday I was in the center of Gothenburg and saw on the digital displays at the tramstops that all traffic would stop for the Europe-wide 3 silent minutes at noon. I was furthermore surprised over all the flags at half-mast that seemed to be everywhere. I really could not take it very seriously, just reflecting over why.. It gave me cold shivers thinking that this probably was a rational way for politicians to strengthen a common European identity. That it would bring us Euros closer together. I do recon that there is more and more of this kind. Or was there European-wide 3 silent minutes after for example the Estonia catastrophy, or the Lockerbie catastrophy? That kind of (planned & concious in all well-meaning) identity building really scares me, and as I have written before I view just the European identyty-building as the most crucial part of the European project. If we hurry if up through cheap (no disrespect for the Spaniards) us & them 'preaching' Europe will become just another bullying superpower, or temporary 'empire' - praising ourselves while making sure that most of the other parts world keeps inferior. While if we let Europe slowly through the decades get comfortable as a whole, there is great hope that Europe can be truly open and harmonical power that really strives to make the entire world a better place, instead of just 'Europe über alles!' But maybe we are still too close to the stoneage for that to happen....... (but yes, I have made statements like "its better with a hastily united Europe that can say no to a possibly downfalling and thus more aggressive/frustrated USA, than having WW3", and I still stand by that if USA's foreign policy continues in the present direction, even if that probably means that Europe just will take USA's role - but as long as there is hope....). To finish off this all too long post, I'll add some recent quotes from American officials that shows aspects of national identity building/maintaining in its most aggressive form, even if I'm sure I don't really have to look that far away, Berlusconi probably have some similar comments for example... Condolezza Rice, March 2000: "We need a common enemy to unite us." "We need a new threat as a marker to where we will lead." The main document of The Project for the New American Century where a big part of the Bush administration have a past, September 2000: "Further, the process of transformation, even if it brings revolutionary change, is likely to be a long one, absent some catastrophic and catalyzing event - like a new Pearl Harbor." Well, I hope you get my point - to be aware and reflecting over the dangers of separating us & them... its very much a (changeable) lingvistic problem of dichotomies, but Ok, I'll stop there...

    Explosion in madrid

A sad day indeed. Â Â May they rest in peace, and the wounded & the families live a good and peaceful life. But I also can't but feel sad over the fact that its so much easier to feel sympathy for fellow westerners killed, than it is when '3rd' world humans are....... Just a week ago ~170 Iraqis got killed from bombs, and there are so many more real bad '3rd' world catastrophies that has happened, recently or in the past - for how long do we remember them, and how much do we care?? And regarding the ones behind this terrible slaughter & the fact that a tape containing verses of the Koran was found amongst detonators in a truck: Do anyone remember the car parked at Boston airport on 9/11, containing a Koran, aircraft pilotmanual and a Tom Clancy book in which was described how airplanes was used against buildings?? Kind of doubtful to say the least. Now I dont want to bring this thread in a different direction, or be provocative. But i can't really say that I am convinced that Al Queda really was behind 9/11. I have not looked to deep into it lately indeed, but there has never been any credible official statement from Al Queda, or? Just hours after the attacks Al Queda was considered guilty by almost everyone, and no other was ever seriously considered. There were some pictures from airport cameras showing the suspected ones realeased some week later - hardly solid evidence? And the only trial that I know of related to 9/11 (in Germany) was recently closed down. Personally I have always considered pissed off Latin Americans as possibly the ones behind 9/11. Not really important or relevant here, but non the less interesting to make the comparison, especially considering 'muslim traces left behind in a vehicle'....
