  1. "Flak vests, though they often contain Kevlarâ„¢, are not designed to stop bullets -- not even low-powered ones from handguns."

Yes, I was talking about shrapnel from exploding artillery/mortar shells (Although I seriously doubt that a 9mm hollow point from a pistol can penetrate even a flak vest, being designed to mushroom upon impact on flesh).

"The exact reason why the German flak vest has a thinner Kevlar panel is unclear to me. Without counting the number of layers and knowing what generation of Kevlar was used, and whether it was combined with other fibers, it is hard to tell if it does in fact provide less protection than the U.S. vests."

You probably right. But I was thinking that Balchoiw might have worn one in the past and thus might have an idea about the ballistic prowess of the german vest.

  2. I recently "stumbled" upon a fine example of a german 1990 issue flak vest (Splitterschutzweste GL). I noticed that the Kevlar panels were about 5mm in thickness, whereas I know that the U.S. issue flak vest has kevlar panels of about 10mm in thickness. I understand that the main function of both of these vests is to give protection against shrapnel, so what I'd like to know is why the germans decided to put less kevlar in the vest and if 5mm is enough against shrapnel, why did the yankees put more kevlar in theirs?

  4. The influenza pandemic of 1918 killed 20 million people, although the virus that caused it killed only 2% of those it infected. SARS, however, kills 5% of those it infects, being equally easy-spreading as influenza (it is thought that a single canadian woman with SARS managed to infect up to 500 people). Thus, in a case of a pandemic of SARS, we're probably facing more fatalities than with the epidemic of 1918.

    Yeah, let's panic.

  8. Heh, yesterday I played Il-2 Forgotten Battles and I must say that the finnish voice actors are on the par in that game too. Almost all sentences are laced with swear-words and the phrases they use are straight from the authentic military jargon.

Another case of ignorance is bliss.<span id='postcolor'>

So what you're saying is that the whole West Bank goes out into the streets to celebrate each suicide bombing and not just the ultra-orthodox militant nuts? You might be right, since in the current situation of the pal-israeli conflict, the palestinians are the ones who are more up shit creek, because they live in crappy houses, unemployed, herded around by IDF (and not comfortably going to work and/or playing OFP, periodically risking it to be killed in the suicide bombings). That's why they are more prone to celebrating whatever they see as possibly leading to improvement (the suicide bombings).

And I'd very much like to be a fly on the wall to eavesdrop on the ultra-orthodox militant nut colonist jews, when they discuss the latest killing of Hamas or Islamic Jihad "terrorists". I'm quite sure that some celebrating flies around.

Anyway, you always say that "you have no idea what's going on here". It might be helpful if you explained even once how you actually perceive the current pal-isr situation. The pals are evil, since they celebrate suicide bombings? Their leaders are evil, since they teach children to hate israelis? What?

In the little conflict Israel vs. the rest of Mid East, if you ask me, both sides are using all the same tactics and blaming each other for using them.

That is what we have to see later on.

By the way, I see that you are implying that western democracies are not forcing anybody to cheer. Right, they might not shoot you in the west, but try criticizing someone important and see your social prospects die. In western cultures you have to cheer the right persons in order to secure a future for yourself.

"Shut the fuck up and get with the program", they say, even in the west.

  20. It seems that every news agency is blaring about how the Iraqis are receiving the U.S. troops with smiles and flowers. Ok, they are probably genuinely delighted, but somehow Sven Hassel's books come to mind. In those it is repeatedly explained how conquered civilians (especially civilians of totalitarian countries) always receive the conquering troops with smiles and declarations that "I was always on your side, it's good to be liberated." This is simple survivalism, of course.

So I wonder, how many Iraqis are genuinely happy that they are "free" now and how many are just cheering, because they think they might get killed if they did not, especially considering that cheering Saddam has probably been mandatory.
