    Creative announces Sound Core3D

My X-Fi does that too, sometimes it plays this incredibly loud hissing sound which can't be good for my headphones because it makes them sound like speakers. Not nice when you're wearing them and it happens. It's rare though. That and crappy drivers put me off Creative. The fact that games have given up using hardware accelerated sound, rendering Creative sound cards pointless, shows how slow they are to adapt. And no way am I buying another sound card that requires me to manually switch between gaming and entertainment modes again. The only reason I still use my X-Fi instead of the onboard audio is the surround sound through headphones. I'll eventually dump it and use another sound card for that. Or just forget about it and use onboard audio.
  2. Fixed  Generally getting shot means a soldier is out of action and goes home in real life (if he doesn't die). So the current 1 or 2 shots = game over is best for single player mode I think. For multiplayer, being revived via first aid is really just a way to keep you in the action, since you can't just load a savegame when you go down. There's no way it can be realistic, we just need to accept it as a way of sacrificing realism for gameplay and enjoy the sense of teamwork it adds :)
  3. Since the game now requires DirectX 10, they must have written a new renderer. I think it's likely that they use a deferred rendering system. That would mean more efficient handling of large numbers of light sources. While that doesn't necessarily mean multiple shadow sources, I think there's a good chance. GTA4, Shift 2, Crysis 2(PC only) use deferred rendering. It's the direction other games are taking, so BIS is probably going that way too. Note that unlike with the example games I listed, deferred rendering in DX10 doesn't have the same problems they have with anti-aliasing...

    Your thoughts on weed

+1. There's no reason for it to be treated differently to alcohol or cigarettes. Personally I prefer my alcohol, never even tried weed, but I think a responsible adult should be able to enjoy some weed. To think, all the violence in places like Mexico could be solved by some simple changes in the law... It seems governments would rather see their citizens die so they can exercise control over them. I think it should be kept away from kids though. The ones that smoke it heavily seem to become stupid and slow in the head, struggling with even basic stuff like speaking their own first language properly.
  5. That's the thing, modders will take things to the crazy extreme. It's up to BIS to get everything working well and make good game that appeals to a large variety of gamers. Then mod teams like ACE expand on that with all the crazy stuff that the more hardcore among us can enjoy in our regular multiplayer sessions with our buddies :) The more time BIS spends on crazy little things that only the hardcore crowd wants, the more important things get neglected like overall gameplay, performance and quality. That puts off the more casual players.
  6. That's what the wounding system needs... to be fixed up and made more user friendly. You need to be able to run if you're giving first aid and come under fire. We don't need all the overcomplicated shit. This is still a game, and development time can be spent on better things.
  7. Going overboard with things like this just sucks the fun out of it. For singleplayer, having to wait for a bot to revive you is frustrating. I'd rather just die and load a savegame. It seemed cool until I actually had to experience it in the early days of ACE and the ArmA 2 campaign. A wounding system where you can drag wounded buddies and revive them is great in multiplayer because, in a way, it replaces the savegame system and gives a better sense of teamwork. But again, overcomplicating it kills the fun.

    Euphoria, the best "ragdolls"

Euphoria is more than just ragdolls. It's a whole new physics based animation system. I don't see it happening though... but then again the system requirements for A3 are high enough for this to be reasonable.

Do you want Laaagdoll Physics in ArmA 3?

If ArmA 2 simulated bullet penetration on bodies, they wouldn't make such good cover any more....

    LA Noire

After pre-ordering GTA4 for PC... Rockstar can stick to consoles  I hate buying a game and then finding out I have to use other crap software with it. Do PC versions right. Otherwise don't blame piracy for the PC version being a flop when developers like BIS can succeed on PC.

How about realstic effects this time?

When I did the effects for ArmA 2 I tried to get them to look like the real thing by watching plenty of real footage, I put realism first instead of Hollywood style. For example all the footage of FFAR rockets I saw were just clouds of smoke and no flames, so that's what I did. I guess the end result was too 'boring'. In hindsight I should have focused more on adding detail and making them look good, being less strict on realism. Certain things I did didn't make it into the game but were implemented in the ACE mod. Someone else worked on them in OA so I speak for the changes there. I'm not involved in ArmA 3. I'm curios to see what they do with effects :)

    Hitman 5: Absolution announced

I remember Hitman 2 having some heavy action parts, so some crazy action wont be out of place as long as it's a small portion of the game. You always had the option in Blood Money to take the assault rifle and cause a massacre. Those heavy weapons were wasted if you played the game properly though. If you could pack and unpack them in briefcases like the sniper rifle they would have been more useful. It's great to see the series come back. I just hope it doesn't turn into an over-simplified action game that, despite a 16 or 18 age restriction, has gameplay designed for 10-year-olds with ADD.

    Interface.

The colour teams? Yes, but it isn't as well developed as it could be. I'd like fire-teams to be the primary method of command.
  14. Maddmatt

    Interface.

I'd like a revamped and easier to use squad system. Squad leader should be commanding fire-teams, not individual solders. Then the fire team leaders manage their men. On a larger scale, each commander should command bout three entities. A platoon commander with three squads. The squad leaders each with three fire-teams, and each fire-team leader with three men. Of course it will vary depending on the situation. SF groups may have 5 men, made up of a leader and two teams of two men. So it will need some flexibility. Make the micro-managing optional, not a requirement.

Do you want Laaagdoll Physics in ArmA 3?

I think all the problems people see with ragdolls are overblown. They can all be solved one way or another. Too many soldiers dying at once? Only do advanced physics calculations for the closest ones to the player. The rest can play an animation and use physics to adjust their pose so they're not sticking through a wall or something. Multiplayer sync? Client side physics, then sync the final resting position. Stupid poses? Yea dead people never land in 'stupid' poses... It wont be as stupid as a pose where the body is sticking through a wall. The game has a core i5 as a minimum requirement. A few ragdolls aren't going to kill that off.

FN 2000s for the US military?

I come back from this forum after a long break, and I'm reminded why I lost interest in the first place. People whining over dumb shit. ArmA games have always had a variety of weapons, some of which didn't fit the armies in the game but were there if mission designers wanted to use them. This game is in the future too, some artistic license to make it more interesting is welcome. Who cares if it upsets a few crazy realism freaks. Yea the Commanche is a bit odd but hey it adds variety. Maybe in the future the US decided it was necessary to get them ready for World War 3.

Community feedback - improvments for Arma3

Improved gameplay. We need a better and more fluid movement system. More efficient interface and easier to use command system that has squad leaders commanding fire-teams instead of having to manage every individual in a squad. A good immersive campaign that starts slow and build up the difficulty and scale as we progress. Something we have been lacking since OFP. Don't go so overboard with the polygon counts on trees and bushes this time that our FPS drops when we get close to them. Making a better and more polished experience overall should take a much higher priority than implementing fancy stuff that pleases a few realism freaks. OA has almost all of the realism features we need like FLIR and shit. Just improve the game itself. Some people will hate me for this but my break from BIS games has given me a different perspective.

AUDIO! Make it right this time!

While I don't condone the pathetic childish attitude shown by the OP, more realistic sound effects would be great. While I think the OA sounds are good overall, they can be too 'dull' compared to when you see footage of the real thing. Also, there is a lack of variation with explosions. If there's as much improvement with the sounds as with the graphics I've seen in those screenshots, I wont be disappointed.

    Arma 3 Officially Announced!

Had to come back here after seeing the news on IGN :) Been away from the ArmA games for a while, playing race sims and simpler games. Will keep my eyes on this. Main thing I hope to see is focus on improving the gameplay. Fancy cool realism stuff needs to take a back seat to gameplay improvements and a simpler interface. Not saying to dumb it down of course. I also hope to see a great immersive campaign.

Have a go Granny beats up six armed Jewel thieves

I just get "Sorry this video could not be found" after a short loading screen. Reminds me of another crazy old lazy that used to live down the road from me, she attacked a robber in her home that had a pistol. Him and his two friends ran away from her, the guy with the pistol was hit by a car and killed running over the freeway. The other two were arrested later. It's good when justice happens :)

    Android's Chinese IPad assasins

Those cheap tablets are pretty crap though, as you would expect for the price. Was looking at getting a couple of Archos tablets for my parents, then I read up on them. Really cheaply built. If you can get a hold of a Nook Color though, that one is an exception. Probably because it's sold at a loss. You can install a custom ROM on it to turn it into a fully features tablet. It's lacks things like a camera and GPS but I think most of us don' care for that in tablet, at least not at that low price. Can't seem to get a hold of them at a reasonable price here in South Africa though :( The real competition for the iPad is the Motorola Xoom. Now that is a proper tablet. If the price is reasonable I'll make sure my parents get one each, since it can replace PCs and laptops for them. Can't justify one for myself though. It can't replace my PC for gaming or development work, and my Galaxy S phone covers the rest pretty damn well when I'm not at my PC. Because it's crap maybe? :p I just can't see anything attractive about Windows Mobile 7. It's like a downgrade from both iOS and Android. All the manufacturers have to build the phones with the same slightly dated hardware inside, so they can barely compete with each other or Android phones. And with Sony planning to back gaming on Android, Microsoft better work damn hard to give us a reason to care about their phone OS.

    IL-2 Sturmovik: Cliffs of Dover

8% is still a crapload of money. I'm sure it would be higher if it wasn't for their bulls**t copy protection. It's hard to imagine what kind of idiots are making those decisions

Realtime immersive - Militar simulator cryengine

It's a highly priced "simulator" sold only from BIS, while Crysis is a cheap game sold everywhere. Not a fair comparison because hardly any gamers will ever play it. Only a few die-hard sim fans are going to buy VBS2 for entertainment purposes. It's more fair to talk about ArmA 2's editor, because that is sold as a game to the public. Where the 3D editor from VBS2 is not included. Crytek give their advanced modding tools away to gamers everywhere, BIS restricts them to the high paying customers and give the gamers dumbed down versions of their tools.

Realtime immersive - Militar simulator cryengine

Unlike VBS 2 it's actually available to the public and can be used by anyone with a copy of Crysis. Also, BIS software doesn't allow that kind of terrain editing (yet, maybe they will pull it off).
