    Special forces

First of all, if you're telling us that there ain't CQB or hostages in war, then you're sadly mistaken. You yourself gave POWs as an example. How about the hostage situation in Tehran in 1979, or the hostage Delta Force rescued in Panama (Op. 'Acid Gambit' I think...)? CQB (in particular MOUT) is, unfortunately, increasingly common in war, in that fighting is occuring not just in open terrain, but in urban centres as well. Secondly, the great thing about OFP is it's flexibility, a feature that's likely to be expanded in OFP2. Yes, it's primarily a simulation of war (in which CQB and hostages are not out of place, mind you), but it could also be extended to things like civilian police operations etc. etc. If we manage to simulate these things in OFP2, it will undoubtedly blow the Rainbow 6-series out of the water. But it won't mean we'll sacrifice any of the brilliant gameplay that made the original so good...

    Frag in tank

I thought it was an older tank (an M60 perhaps) that the nutter got away in? Anyway, just because the LAPD managed to get inside that tank doesn't mean that anyone can open the hatches on any tank. Maybe the guy forgot to close/lock the hatch (he was a tad disturbed from what it appeared)? Even if this tank was accessible from the outside, it doesn't mean all tanks can be. A basic grunt with a couple of grenades doen't necessarily know how to open tank hatches, and while he's fiddling around up there he's a perfect target... Personally, while it sounds like a bit of fun, its really more of a BF1942 thing, and OFP needs to stick to realism. If someone made a WW2/Saving Private Ryan mod, and your desperate enough to lob grenades into tanks, it might even be scriptable...?

    Realistic explosion mod  v1.1

The 'INQ, Blood to v1.49' is corrupt for me as well - WinRAR gives a 'multipart or corrupt ZIP file' error...
  5. Good work here, the rifle is an absolute beast! The sounds are great, and I'm glad you added your own iron sights and put the bolt on the right side (if you haven't noticed already, the BIS Hunting Rifle has the bolt on the left side) Perhaps the next version could have some improved textures, and maybe a version with optical sights (even if they aren't used IRL)? Edit: oh, and by the way, maybe you could go a step further than Teacup's dog addon and make an elephant? We need some huntable fauna to grace our islands with!

Please help this newbie who is in distress

For aircraft addons, you'd be hardpressed to go past Footmunch, especially his recent F-4 Phantom addon, which you can find at his site. Also, have a crack at Skaircro's newly released F-5E. As for the performance issue, download the lastest drivers for your graphics card (if you haven't already) and check out this tweak guide for OFP. Hope this helps

    Sjb handgun pack 2

Fantastic pack! Models and textures are bang on... Just a few comments... - Any chance of seeing new iron sights? at the moment they're all just the default BIS Beretta sights - I'm not crazy about the un-silenced USP sounds. It's not a major problem, but a less-harsh firing sound would be nice - I can't seem to find any Beretta variations besides the silenced 92FS...where in the editor can I find them? Other than that, I'm having lots of fun with this addon - looking forward to the next update

    Redressing the balance

Bah! We'll see about that, we will! Is there any way of preventing aircraft in OFP from engaging ground targets with air-to-air missiles? Can you specify in the config of the weapons whether or not the AI will fire them at certain targets?

    The Iraq Thread 2

I was not aware that Saddam let everyone in the country tote automatic rifles. Where did you get this from? Like Denoir said, after the first Gulf War Saddam was feeling a bit jumpy, and subsequently allowed the populace to arm itself in the event that the US came back for him sometime in the future. 12 years of gun ownership is, granted, a small amount of time (compared to the United State' 250+ years of gun culture) in which to make the population dependent on small arms. Iraqis, however, were subject to continual propaganda from the government which suggested that the US might come and finish them off at any moment. That paranoia combined with the lawlessness of reconstruction makes guns a commodity that the average Iraqi would rather not give up, lest they be offered reasonable terms for a trade in...

    The Iraq Thread 2

I think that when people say that "Iraq could turn/has turned into another Vietnam" they mean that the United States has committed itself to a situation that it will find incredibly hard to extract itself from, not that the US faces combat similar to that of Vietnam. However, the similarities between the two are there. In both cases the US, an industrial power with enormous conventional military capabilities, is fighting a non-industrial, non-conventional conflict. The guerilla tactics employed by Iraqi combatants are similar to those employed by other paramilitary forces in previous conflicts - Vietnam and Algeria are but two that spring to mind. The problem with taking AKs away from Iraqis is that guns are pretty much an integral part of Iraqi society, and have been for some time - many Iraqis hang on to theirs to protect their business and families. As you say, offering them incentives for voluntarily handing their guns over is a good idea, but if you forcibly remove them, coalition forces are just going to further alienate themselves from the Iraqi population. You are spot on with anti-US sentiment as a result of the slow return of power and water, and I personally think this one of the major mistakes the coalition made in the early days of reconstruction. In reality, it would have taken something pretty unrealistic (ie. instant peace and prosperity) for all Iraqis to welcome the coalition as their saviours, but quicker repairs of infrastructure would have been a good show of faith. As for normality, a great deal of Iraqis (especially the younger, radical Iraqis) have only known life under a dictator and have become accustomed to such rule. A sudden shift to virtual anarchy, then (hopefully) democracy is just the wrong way to foster democratic values. Change must come from the inside, and this tends to be a gradual process.

    Redressing the balance

Outstanding work Footmunch! Absolutely beautiful looking plane - a pleasure to fly The sounds are perhaps the best I've heard (not that irritating whine the standard OFP planes have) and the turbojet smoke is awesome... Like Miles asked, are there any plans for different weapon variations? (ie. Wild Weasal, all napalm, all Mk-82s, maybe a droptank or two...) Also, would it be possible to add some Australian (RAAF) roundels to your roundels pack? At the moment, both the standard blue/white/red and low-visibility roundels are used, so it would be terrific if you could add them both Can't wait for the next versions!

    Music composer

I don't think existing songs from any band would be appropriate. Just because a band like Coldplay is fairly popular at the moment doesn't mean their songs would fit in with OFP2. Just remember, if you want to listen to the latest music, just fire up Winamp and have it running in the background. Unless it's something appropriate to the period (ie. The Doors, Rolling Stones) or to the experience of war (ie. Barber's Adagio, Albinoni's Adagio), I think the soundtrack should be created specifically for the game. The soundtrack should definitely be instrumental and, as other people have said, with varying tones and moods. Some tracks should be intense and adrenaline-pumping, some should be quiet and reflective and some more upbeat. Hans Zimmer's soundtrack for the 'Thin Red Line' is a really good example of sad, reflective music. The current composer (Ondrej Matejka?) is great, and I would like to see him back. He gives a really unique atmosphere to the OFP world.

    The need for improved manpads

I'd love to see some new man-portable SAMs or even improved Stingers/Strelas... AFAIK, noone has made any other hand-held SAM systems (except for, I suppose, the RPG-7s that target helicopters). Perhaps the most neglected field of weapons in OFP? How about a Javelin, SA-16 Gimlet or Redeye? Even some more static/vehicle-mounted SAMs would be nice, like the RBS-70, any number of Russian SAMs, Crotales etc.
  16. This is something I've been wondering about for a while, and can't seem to find any answers by searching... Is there any way to keep two or more helicopters (that have been grouped together) flying in formation at 'normal' or 'full' speeds? At the moment, the group leader flies off immediately (whether already flying or not) and the others follow soon after. The leader then waits for the others to catch up, who do so, then slow down by which time the leader has flown off again - and it goes on and on. They keep in formation if their speed is set to 'limited', but i'd rather have my attack helicopters flying at a respectable speed towards their targets
  17. Cheers fellers! Looks much better without all that stopping and starting

    1.94 problems

I tried using -nomap in my command line a couple of days ago, and so far it works like an absolute charm! Before I was getting that 'CreateIndexBuffer' within 5-10 minutes of loading up v1.94, without fail. But now, no problems whatsover - I haven't noticed any side-effects from the -nomap command. If anything I've noticed an increase in performance (although that might have something to do with me increasing my AGP aperture size). A big thanks to Robert Stipek & the rest of the BIS team for their prompt reply! More than two years later, and still providing us with absolutely top-knotch tech support ... amazing
  21. I believe he means the addon is designed for OFP v1.75 (ie. Resistance) onwards, not CWC. The units will still be on the 'West' side... Great stuff guys, and that chopper looks awesome

    New leo tanks

You guys seem to be pumping them out! Great stuff, d/l as we speak.. I was just wondering, I have v1.1 of ONS Leopards, so how does v0.6r fit in with that? Did you just revise the version numbers?

    Coyote and lav iii updates

I'm going to sound like a bit of a twit, but I re-extracted the CAF_WLSAVR.pbo my Addons folder, and hey-presto, no more textures missing Thanks for your prompt help anyway! Now they are perfect!

    Coyote and lav iii updates

It's more unreasonable to suggest that ONS or any other mod team only ever release one version of an addon they create. There are inevitably going to be bugs that have been overlooked, thus requiring a new version, or the team might want to add a new feature or two. No doubt all addon makers would like to bring out a flawless version every time, but this isn't realistic. If a new version of the LAV appears "every other week", what's the problem? It's not like they bring out a new one every 10 minutes... Just for the record, I'm a 56ker and I am more than happy to d/l every new version that comes along. Anyway, back to topic... Any word on why my Coyote is missing textures?
