I loved Kegety's Kiowa Warrior addon for the (quasi) minigun it carried. If there's one thing that makes a good war movie for me, it's heli gunships with GE miniguns! (Blackhawk Down, and We Were Soldiers come to mind as of late) I might be able to kobble together some VRML or .dxf files- my 3d modeling tools are limited to DogaCGAL-3. Is anyone else interested in putting something together?<span id='postcolor'> I'm very interested. Actually all you should have to do is take the .50 cal door gun on the BlackhawkMG "blocks" and shorten the barrel (by pulling them back inside the weapon) so that only the barrel shroud is left (the part of the reciever that the barrel goes into). If you stretch the barrel shroud a bit, perhaps modify other parts of the receiver a bit and re-texture the shroud to look like multiple barrels, it should look fairly close to a 7.62mm minigun. Oh...and then of coarse ask Kegetys for permission to use his minigun from the Kiowa warrior for the sound and high rate of fire. I'm actually surprised that nobody else has done this yet. Body armor in ofp

</span><table border="0" align="center" width="95%" cellpadding="3" cellspacing="1"><tr><td>Quote (dkraver @ May 20 2002,16:55)</td></tr><tr><td id="QUOTE">The one i myself had was 25x25x1.5cm ( is inserted into a fragmentation vest that will stop grenade shrapnels and to some extend pistol rounds) the plate was a little curved and when hit it would make a mark around 2.5cm in diameter on the impact side and move the backside of the impact area 0.3-0.5cm out. They tested it on pigs   and most of them would have some kind of internal bleeding.<span id='postcolor'> That's what trauma plates are for. A well designed Type-IV vest has a trauma plate to help absorb the impact. To end this arguement, soldiers CAN and DO wear this type of body armor. The Ranger vests someone mentioned were used successfully in Somalia where they did indeed stop bullets and saved lives. More recently during Operation Anaconda in Afghanistan on the CBS news they had a story on this same body armor used by the 10th Mountain Div. troops. One of the soldiers they interviewed had his vest stop a bullet that probably would have killed him otherwise. My main point is that well designed Type-IV vests work and are used in the real world. Here's an idea: research your planes first!

</span><table border="0" align="center" width="95%" cellpadding="3" cellspacing="1"><tr><td>Quote (Wardog @ May 21 2002,18:09)</td></tr><tr><td id="QUOTE">Actually, Miles, the model is not the problem. You could model a brick, give it the data of a Blackhawk, and it would perform quite nicely, thankyou very much. The information which tells the aircraft to miss the ground in a particular way (or not, depending on pilot skill) is kept in a seperate file. You don't need to be a modeller to change this info, just patience, and possibly a degree in maths. It's an aspect of the job I've not looked into yet, but I know other people have. I fly CFS2, Falcon4, and a couple of other sims (I did a few models for CFS2, but never got as far as publishing). CFS2 has a group called the One Percent Group. What they do is publish flight models for different aircraft which are alledged to be within one percent of the performance of the particular aircraft. It would be really cool if something similar could be done with OFP models, but it would require the agreement of the various people which edit these files. As for the F22/hawk thingmie; doesn't matter if you can turn the bird ass over tit in a microsecond, the human body can only take so many Gees, even with assistance. But until a Hawk and a Raptor get into a knife fight, or the US Airforce releases some highly classified documents. nobody can say with certainty. I said the Hawk probably can out turn a Raptor. but I wouldn't put money on it.<span id='postcolor'> Oh I know it's not the model itself. When I say model I mean the entire addon as a whole. Tinkering with it, as they did with the AMX fighter just leads to an almost impossible aircraft to fly. Honestly I don't care much about how realistically the plane handles. I just want the damn thing to be reasonably easy to fly as I'm not a "Super Realism" flight simulator buff. I mean I like flight simulators but if they require a masters degree in advanced avionics and flight control systems then I skip those flight simulators. BIS had done a fairly good job with making the A-10 and Su-25 flyable and did a good job with the auto-landing capability for those of us who suck at flying and don't have a nice flight-simulator joystick, with throttle control, ect... For example I know a lot of flight sim buffs who HATE the helicopter flight control system. Personally I think that it's one of the best I've ever used in any helicopter flight simulation as it's easy to fly the helicopters in OFP and I can do all kinds of high risk, daring maneuvers without crashing 2 seconds into the flight like I do with something like Apache vs Havoc. (I love flying down streets in between buildings in the Cobra gunship). At any rate that's just personal opinion and I respect yours because I know how dearly a lot of flight simulator fans love accurate flight controls. But if the AMX is that difficult to control in real life then I have new respect for those Italian pilots. Same goes for the soldiering part. I served in the Army and I know that OFP is not entirely realistic in the ground combat part. For example there are no gun jams, you don't have to change barrels on MG's, you can run forever, ect.. ect.. but if they added some of those things it might make the game a lot more frustrating and less fun, not to mention that the extra stuff might slow down the frame rates some more on missions using a lot of units. For me more important then a realistic flight control system on a OFP aircraft are relatively realistic weapons, realistic textures and models (refueling probes on some MH-60s would be nice), realistic crew/passenger load, and a easy to fly flight control system that makes the aircraft a joy to fly and not a horrendously frustrating experience for those of us who are not hardcore flight sim fans and who don't have all the flight sim hardware. U.S. doesn't use Tornadoes. But at any rate you are correct that the C-130's normally have fighter escort of some type if operating in hostile areas. The only variant with dedicated air to ground weaponry is the AC-130 gunship although in the form of 20mm gattling, 40mm Boffors, and 105 howtizer cannons all of which are side mounted. There are also special operations versions of the C130 such as the MC-130 Combat Talon II that are designed to penetrate deep into enemy airspace to insert Special Ops units or to resupply those units. It does this by flying at very low altitudes using a terrain avoidance radar system similar to that found on the ground attack variant of the Tornado fighter-bomber. It also features heavy ECM equipment as well as flare and chaff dispensers. Chris G. aka-Miles Teg<GD>

Here's an idea: research your planes first!

I agree with the original poster on this thread. While certainly it is not possible to get prefectly realistic aircraft, A LOT can be done to improve the exhisting models. I also noticed that the Huey's fly really fast. What I have to is set their speed to "limited" on their waypoints. This controls the problem more or less. However addons such as the AMX fighter bomber are fatally flawed quite literally. If you've ever tried to fly it, the role rate is absurd. Even using the keyboard to fly it, it spins out of control extremely easily and crashes. Also I wasn't able to get the AI pilot to land the plane when I tried using various scripts that had worked on the Hawk addon (although the Hawk AI pilots sometimes don't land on the runway). So right now the AMX aircraft only seems good for use with AI pilots which is a shame. Also Martin sticking a 30mm cannon as a door gun on his Huey was a bit disappointing. I thought he was going to use the minigun from the Kegetys "Kiowa Warrior" addon instead. With a little remodelling of the .50 cal gun and some retexturing it could even be made to look like a real minigun. For all of you who say, "Well go do it yourself" I have indeed tried messing with Milkshape doing some screwing around with the black hawk "blocks" and it's hard as hell which is why I have great respect for guys like Martin and Eviscerator who have infinite patience. However I do not have the time nor the skill to do this type of modelling at least not yet. In the mean time I think there is nothing wrong with giving MOD makers some constructive criticism especially on those MODs where I have first-hand experience with the real equipment/units or where I have a lot of literature and knowledge on that equipment/units (U.S. Army manuals, Jane's Defense Weekly publications, ect...). So hopefully any mod makers will take this as constructive criticism and indeed do a little bit of research on their mods. If the goal of the mod is to be realistic, I recommend getting in touch with military or ex-military people who are familiar with or who have direct experience with the vehicles, weapons, and/or units that you are modding. I've been giving a bit of constructive criticism myself that I think has helped things quite a bit. For example I let Christoph know that his RPK's gas tube was too far out and that only the barrel section needed stretching. He also realized this at the last moment but I think my feedback (written in a friendly manner) encouraged him to fix the problem which he did...and the result is a very nice looking RPK light machine gun that looks fairly close to the real thing. So to all the modders here, keep up the great work, but also don't settle for mediocre addons when slight adjustments can make it a much better and more realistic addon. Chris G. aka-Miles Teg<GD>

    The power of oxygen

Uh, hate to break your bubble, but Oxgyen is not the be-all-end-all program for OFP. It deals with models, but not terrains or with the actual animations of soldiers. That's one reason why you don't see anyone making animals for OFP. I'm not saying that it can't be done, but it's not very likely unless BIS creates some new animations. Also as far as Sci-Fi mods go, how are you going to simulate flying in space??? Unless some VERY clever programmers figure out how to combine a space sim with OFP, I don't think it's going to happen. However other type games like a mystery type game would be feasible. Also many historical wars like WWII, the Falklands War, the Vietnam War, the various Middle East wars, ect... would all be feasible. But it ends at WWI for the most part. Stuff like bayonets and other hand to hand combat weapons have not been implemented by BIS and I am very doubtful that anyone could make such a thing without help from BIS. Personally I would love to see some kind of hand to hand combat engine implemented into the OFP graphics engine. I would like to march with the Roman Legion upon Carthage or simulate battles of the American Civil War. Stuff like that would be fantastic. If MOD groups can't do it, I hope BIS will be the pioneers to do so and take the OFP engine to the next level, because currently MOD groups alone can not do it without help from BIS. I saw that earlier on another thread but I haven't tried it yet. I do like the minigun on the Kiowa Warrior Addon, but unfortunately you can't actually see it. Ditto if you stuck that script on the helicopter however at least that's better then nothing. Actually I've been very successful with AI door gunners when I'm flying the helicopter. I can wipe out whole squads with my AI door gunner. The trick is to fly the helicopter so that he is facing the bad guys on the ground and so that you are not moving too fast. Before that you also have to target the bad guys...then turn the helicopter sideways for the door gunner to line them up...then give them the order to fire and they'll start gunning away at any bad guy in front of them. I'll try it with the minigun. Hopefully it'll work just as well. Chris G. aka-Miles Teg<GD>
  10. I'm surprised nobody has done this yet. It would seem that now with Oxygen out, would it not be a simple thing to take an exhisting UH-60 model and then covert it into a MH-60 special operations helicopter by adding a refueling probe, the FLIR, and even better, modify the M2 on the door gun into a 7.62mm minigun like on the real deal? Ditto for the special ops version of the chinook. I know Flipper was working on something like that and even had some cool screen shots, but I guess he's not releasing it until his teams entire MOD comes out which is a shame. Any of you MOD makers up to the challenge? It shouldn't be that difficult since it would just be done by modifying the exhisting UH-60 model. Hell you wouldn't even have to retexture it much unless you wanted it black, but I'd be fine with a green one. Chris G. aka-Miles Teg<GD>

Not only that, the pavehawk is almost exclusively used in all special operations missions in real life so I would like to use one in OFP as well. In addition they are not identical by any means in real life at least. The Pavehawk, aside from extended range, has a nose mounted FLIR and ECM equipment not found on standard UH-60's. Finally the MH-60's almost always have 7.62mm miniguns mounted on them. Not M2's. Sure for those that don't care much about the realism then it's no biggy. For some a Blackhawk could be flourescent orange for all they cared. However some of us would like to see a very nice and realistic MH-60 Pavehawk that will work well within the limitations of the OFP graphics engine. In other words I'm not expecting a FLIR camera and stuff like that which only BIS themselves could make. I just want something that LOOKS realistic and as much as possible, is outfitted with realistic weapon loads. You may not care about stuff like that but I and others (especially those that are ex-Army like myself) do. Chris G. aka-Miles Teg<GD>

Try making some missions where your troops are delivered by UH-60 into an area with say about 4 AA troops amongst 4 squads (one per squad). Then tell me how effective they are. In my opinion they do the job nicely. Stick two AA guys per enemy squad and things get really hairy. Chris G. aka-Miles Teg<GD>

However I imagine that it must be fairly difficult to get ahold of those photgraphs especially pictures of the inside of armored vehicles which you don't often see good pictures of. Ditto for planes like C130's. I remember someone saying awhile back that the reason BIS didn't release a C130 was because of some technical problem with the game engine that didn't allow for that. I think it was one of the IDF squad guys that mentioned that. At any rate, if you're able to release even one aircraft or vehicle soon that would be very cool. I think that would better (at least for us) then waiting for a whole pack of vehicles to be released. Also that way the public can beta-test your vehicles and updates can be made as necessary... Any interest in this?

I wish that BIS simply took the best of Satchels sounds and made them part of an official addon. The rifle sounds I admit are not the best. Also he should have left the 5 ton truck sounds alone as he only made them sound worse. The BIS 5ton engine sound was actually quite close to the real thing which I'm very familiar with after riding in them for 8 years. However the machine gun sounds, the medic sounds, the aircraft sounds, THE HELICOPTER SOUNDS!!!, THE TANK SOUNDS, and the explosion sounds are just VASTLY VASTLY VASTLY better then the ones that come with the game. PLEASE BIS PLEASE incorporate some of Satchels sounds into the game as an official update!!!!!! Chris G. aka- Miles Teg<GD>
