Lost brothers mod released rangers and delta addon
miles teg replied to ExtracTioN's topic in ADDONS & MODS: COMPLETE
Ok.... I finally got the damn thing working. Apparently you need the original HKmod pack to get the new one working....which pisses the hell out of me as it's HUGE. Now that I got it working... here's what I think: Rangers and Marines were very disappointing. First off, textures on pistol belt turn white at a distance. Second, most of the desert units use the old Gulf War era "chocolate chip" cammoflage. That was gotten rid of very quickly after the Gulf War as it was found to be rather poor quality camoflage. The SAS units as someone else noted, have the American flag on their shoulders. Furthermore the American Flag on all the units floats above the shoulder. The SAS units also have overly bright desert camoflage that sticks out like crazy. Also are those helmets correct? Does the British Army now wear the same type of kevlar helmets as the U.S. Army? It would have been nicer if the SAS troops had those arab style head scarves on there heads (and not just wrapped around their necks) like those German SF troops in the HKmod. Finally, the weapons... they are mostly good except I was very pissed off that these units FORCE the player to use Flipper's addon pack, if not in the mission, then in the player's addon directory where it just takes up RAM space. Personally I don't like using that pack as you can't pick and choose which addons you want and which you don't want. There are several other M4 addons that I prefer to use (such as the one that came with Frandsen's Marines). The desert camo M4 for example is very unrealistic. I've never seen any U.S. forces using a desert camoflaged M4. They should made these units as seperate pbo's and they should have made them use the standard BIS weapons. That way the mission makers have the choice of adding whatever weapons they want. As it is, it forces the user to use three huge .pbo files. The HKmod2 pack, the original HKpack, and Flipper's M4 pack. So while I REALLY like the SEAL Team 6 unit and the SEAL woodland camo unit (with the black watch cap), I can't use it in a mission cuz it's a beta addon and because it requires huge addons that many people may choose not to download. I know it's a beta, but nevertheless it's still frustrating as I really would like to make missions with some of these units. Well... at least I can look forward to the Ballistics U.S. units. Hopefully those will look more like modern U.S. troops and also that also they will not force the mission maker and players to use a ton of different unofficial addons for it work. Yup. Plus to what he said about dehydration, not talking will not save you from dehyrdration. Drinking water will. If you're out of water, and you're out in the desert, then you got problems. Normally all well planned out combat missions including taking more then enough water for the mission as well as precombat inspections to insure that every soldier is taking enough water. For extended missions, plans include means for resupplying the soldiers with water as well as food, ammo, fuel, and other equipment. If a soldier finds himself low on water, then that means the planning either was flawed, or the enemy has extremely dense air defences keeping a special operations unit deep behind enemy lines from receiving fresh supplies. In such cases things like keeping your mouth closed might help a little but with inadequate amounts of water, heat exhaustion and dehydration will still set in and kill a person. In such cases a soldier must be resourcefull and either capture water from the enemy, from civilians, or from natural resources such as a spring, from animal blood, from morning dew, and from some types of plants such as certain goards that grow wild in the desert. The Su-24 is no more a copy of the F-111 than the Tornado, or than the Rafale is  of the Saab Grippen. You would think that once it came out that the MiG-29 had a lot of it's own unique innovations and wasn't  a copy of the F-18 or the F-15, that this myth of the Russians simply copying ariplanes would die. I would like the Su-24 in OFP, but more than that i would like an aircraft for the Russians that can also serve in the AA role. West already has the F-14, F-15 (soon) and F-16. So far the Russians have a MiG-29, and even that isn't very usable at this point.<span id='postcolor'> When I say copy, I'm speaking in very general terms. You are right it is definitely not an identical clone of the F-111. However it has a very similar design, and has an identical mission and purpose as the F-111. It shares much more in common with the F-111 then the Tornado for example. Like the F-111 it has it has a swing wing design, side by side seating of the crew, has a similar weapons payload, and has terrain-avoidance radar systems and all-weather day/night attack capability. Like the EF-111, there are also electronic warfare variants of the Su-24 as well. But as you said, that's pretty much where the similarities end. The Su-24 is overall a fairly original looking design. One of it's strong points is its ability to take off from rough unprepared airfields. I read once an interview with Russian pilots who talked about the Su-24, and they really loved the plane for its ruggedness and low-level precision attack capabilities. It would be more work to create then the Su-34 (due to its swing-wing design which an addon maker may choose to animate like that F-14 addon that came out) but it's a very good aircraft for OFP. If not that perhaps the Mig27? There are some nice pics of the Mig-27 at: http://www.aeronautics.ru/archive/vvs/mig27-01.htm Chris G. aka-Miles Teg<GD>

Hey hey, woe hold on guys. Don't forget the good ol' Su-24 Fencer. The Su-30 and Su-34 aren't widely used these days due to their cost, however the Su-24 has been used for awhile and is still the primary medium bomber used by the Russian Airforce. It's basically a copy of the F-111 Aardvark however it's made a lot more rugged. Like the Su-34 it has side by side seating, carries a huge amount of bombs and has terrain avoidance radar that is also used for targetting. I think that overall the Su-24 Fencer would be the best heavy ground attack aircraft for OFP as it covers the cold war period and more modern times as well. As far as I know it's still going strong in the Russian Airforce. It looks like a big Mig-23 but it's actually a much different aircraft then either the Mig-23 or the Mig-27 as it's larger, has better electronics, has side by side seating, and has a much larger weapons payload. BIS actually has some of it's scale sizes incorrect according to some addon makers I've talked to.  Aside from that the scale, there are only minor bugs that others mentioned (and fixing the turret so that it looks more realistic inside).   Oh...also the red tracers look AWESOME...bug...  they look a little strange when you are the gunner shooting them.  It's not a big problem just a little wierd in that the tracer line isn't exactly straight...it makes this wierd angle.  But again, that's just a minor glitch and it's not really that bad.  I really like the new sounds.  Nice and heavy on the HMG, and normal on the coaxial.  Excellent job on that sound.  I also really like the dammage levels of the 14.5mm HMG.  It's just about perfect.  It takes a long time to do dammage on a tank, but it can tear up lightly armored APC's quite nicely as it can in real life.  For example during the last Gulf War, one M2 Bradley IFV gunner was badly wounded when a 14.5mm round penetrated his turret and hit him in the hip.  The M2 is a fairly heavily armored IFV so you can imagine what it does to something like a M113.  Nice effect also how it blows back the infantry when it hits them.  Very cool!  So high marks on the gun implementation.  The moving windows panels also rock, but as someone else mentioned the periscope gets blocked also when the armored panels are closed.  That would be great if that could be fixed.  Also it would be nice if the interior had more texturing. At any rate, overall this is a wonderful addon that is extremely useful in OFP missions as it fills a nice gap for such jobs as convoy escort duties where heavier tracked armor just gets in the way of the trucks.  It's also a nice fast way of moving troops around on the ground and it can take a good deal of punishment.  So keep up the excellent work and please continue updating it! Also don't forget that with some minor changes you could turn it into a modern BTR-80 as well.  Until the next update, your BTR-70's will be seeing heavy combat in Nogova.   They are featured in my mission "Operation Condor" which can be downloaded from my missions page on the link in my signature.  However I need to update the mission as it has a few bugs in it that I hope to fix this weekend. I agree with everyone else... the pics are great and all.(although will the SLR have the carrying handle on it? I didn't quite see it on the FN-FAL rifles in the pics.) But... When will we ever get to use these units. Will there be any units released before the whole mod is completed? Or will we have to wait months longer for the entire mod to be finished? That British helicopter (not sure what type that is) I could REALLY use for more modern British Army missions that I'm working on. It would be nice if you guys could at least release one or two addons such as that helicopter. Chris G. aka-Miles Teg<GD> -

So I was incorrect on my comment about the Ak. But as for accuracy the M-16 and its varients Smoke the Ak, but when most engagments in a combat area tend to be 50 to 100m Who cares about accurecy the SR-47 Is mostly For Weight the Ak Weights in at nearly 10 lbs, while the SR-47 Should (now should be i can not confirm this) weight in at about 5 lbs freeing up 5 pounds. in Theory Only. In All honestly the Weapon fully loaded problebly weights in at 7 pounds, because 7.62 is much heavier than 5.56 Well anyways Who cares Its just a game Great Model Earl Keep up the Good Work! HOOOAAAH!<span id='postcolor'> You stand corrected here also ....LOL The rifling in a barrel does NOT make it hotter. OLD M16A1 barrels sometimes melted with extended full auto fire because they were very skinny (less surface area means it does not disperse heat well) that problem was resolved a long time ago. (now they are actually THICKER than AK barrels). Different barrels are rifled to different twists based on the calibre and weight of the bullet fired. M16/AR15 barrels are available in various twists. The first M16A1s were designed to fire 55grain ammo (M193BALL) so they had twist rates of 1in14, and later changed to 1in12. Current M16A2 has a 1in7 twist so that it can stabilize the M855 62grain ammo, AND the M856 tracer (the latter of which is quite long and heavy) Most civillian AR15s have 1in7, 1in8, or 1in9 twist barrels (1in9 reliably stabilizes 55grain, AND 62 grain ammo...and heavier) AK47s/74s also are rifled for the particular weight ammo they shoot. The reason an M16 is inherently more accurate than an AK is that AK variants are built to much looser tolerances (hence THIER inherent non-stoppable reliability), and they have remedial "notch and post" sights. An AK74 is built on a stamped metal reciever, with the barrel pressed into a steel trunnion block that is riveted into the reciever. M16s are precision milled from forged aluminum. Each has its advantages/disadvantages. BTW Knights Armament is located about 30 min. away from me (they are the ones who were building the SR-47) Last I heard though...production of the rifle was cancelled.<span id='postcolor'> That's interesting. I wonder if the Special Forces decided to just use AK's or take their risks with resupply issues and stick with the M4's? Chris G. aka-Miles Teg<GD>

These 'buggers' do have the capacity to engage tanks in a 'anti tank scenario'. But to lower the barrel they need to fold down the barrel support onto the deck of the engine. Maybe there is too much swing left and right also.I dont like the aiming reticle for the gunner, i think it should be a vertical bar gradutated in meteres (like the commanders view),(x5,x10 etc), not a AA aiming sight. As for the shell being overpowered, yes it is slightly, but in Artillery terms a near miss is considered a direct hit, and a couple of 155 shells are devastating when grouped together. Infantry have no chance if its an air burst. Some of the textures didnt show when i zooomed out and revolved around it. I wish that AI would lock on to your choosen target and fire at it until told to stop, maybe we need a script or something for that. But it would be nice if you didnt need a direct line of sight to fire and could shoot over hills and woods and engage an area blind except for the radar at the top of the screen. Maybe give a grid reference by a spotter and the AI will pound away until its told to stop. This add on really rocks!<span id='postcolor'> True, but really the barrel support issue is a minor one. The fact of the matter is that it is VERY important for a M109 to have the capability to fire in a direct fire mode in order to defend itself if enemy armor comes into range as well as against attacking infantry where the coaxial or rooftop machine gun just might not cut it. I absolutely HATE it when addon makers limit addons like that. Also a direct hit from an artillery round is exactly that...a direct hit meaning that the shell contacts the target. The target may be a general area or it may be a point target as in a tank. Nevertheless we are not talking volley fire, but an individual M109 which does not fire in a volley all by itself. It simply would NOT destroy a main battle tank or even most APC's with a indirect hit. A truck, jeep, or other soft targets yes, but not armored targets unless they only have very light armor. Also as far as infantry go, these rounds are NOT airbursts nor do they attempt to simulate that. Infantry can very easily escape normal artillery simply by taking cover either in trenches (not possible in OFP unless you got GFX-707's trench addon) or you get behind some addons. Unfortunately, the OFP engine has a damage system where it doesn't matter if you have cover usually. That is why the addon maker needs to make these artillery rounds MUCH less powerful in the game engine...to be realistic, more like the 73mm BMP-1 rounds in OFP dammage wise. Yes I know the M109 is 155mm, but to get a similar damage radius either the 73mm round or maybe at the most, the 120mm tank round should be used as a template for dammage levels. Lowering the dammage levels would also deter players from trying to use the M109 as a big tank. Lowering the armor levels on the M109 would also help in this. So far I've found the M109's controlled by AI to be highly effective at ranges beyond that in which regular AI tanks can engage. Getting a platoon of these together results in some very potent volley fire. Interesting debate about the originators of this addon however. I guess some DKM beta-tester decided to give DKM the finger and release it themselves? But the next question is... If DKM had it working this far why didn't they release it? If the problems with indirect fire, and unrealistic lethality (and armor levels) were fixed, it would be as perfect an artillery piece as can be made within the limitations of the OFP engine. But I guess now it will never see the light of day. Chris G. aka-Miles Teg<GD> -

I just tried the addon. Is it just me or can the gun not be lowered in order to use it for direct fire? That pisses me off. Also the shells are WAAAY too powerful. In real life they would not destroy a tank just by landing next to it. Only a direct hit would do that. Also that means you can't take cover if you are infantry. No matter where you hide you're dead. They really need to make this addon much more realistic by lowering the dammage levels, and more importantly allowing for direct fire capability. Other then that it's a very sweet addon and the inside and outside textures are just superb. I just wish they used satchels tank gun sound where you hear the whistle of the shell coming in. Also the armor on it should be very light (like a M113). Chris G. aka-Miles Teg<GD> -

I'm not saying that none of them make American addons, but just that few make American soldier addons.... only the vehicles if that usually. Â I tried messing with Oxygen myself, but right now what little free time I have from Grad school I use to make missions which is where my skills lay in OFP. So please don't say that there are no other foreign troops for OFP. However it would be nice to at least see some proper U.S. troops. The only good ones out right now is Frandsen's USMC troops which are just awesome. There are no high quality modern U.S. Army troops at the moment aside from maybe SEB's Delta Force addon that they made a long time ago. For example some nice U.S. Army Special Forces and 10th Mountain Div. infantry troops in modern desert fatigues, equipment and body armor, would be really nice... maybe also some CIA paramilitaries wearing Afghani clothes but with sunglasses and carrying other American gear. I have seen some picks of some upcoming units of this type, but so far they did not impress me too much as they either were very unrealistic, or they had other problems like feet and hands being too big and stuff like that. A few of the GR mod units actually come close, but likewise they have some problems. We also need new Russian troops. There are no modern Russian infantry addons out right now. It would be nice to see some new Spetsnaz units for example, where they're equipped with heavy body armor, those funky looking assault helmets, or black watch caps (like some of the units in the HKmod). Also the point of aim (the aim dot) for the gun/rockets should be lowered a bit so that the Tornado doesn't dive so low when the AI fires the JP-233 (which basically are rockets with no or little velocity). I have a .cpp file that I can give you where I got the AI to use the jp233 on the G8 tornado quite effectively (with the stock G8 Tornado the AI doesn't the JP233). The only problem is that the Tornados dive so low (often they dive down as low as 10 ft over the ground) that they blow themselves up because they get too close to the explosions from the JP233's. Adjusting the aim dot should fix that I think. A nice RAF Tornado like that would provide excellent airsupport for your British troops, plus the Jp233 in action is a very impressive site when you are on the ground watching it exploding over enemy troops and armor. Perhaps later on, if you find someone willing to do it, a Jaguar mod could be created. Wasn't someone doing a Super Puma and a Lynx awhile back? I wonder what happened to those projects? At any rate, I hope to see some of your updated British units soon. They are so far the best I've seen overall. Chris G. aka-Miles Teg<GD>
