I was shooting up some VC in the open rice farms and they were running all directions, and with my gunship, I was gunning them down fairly easy.  But I've read stories of VC run across a dike in record speed, much faster than any american can run.  Is this a value that can be changed in OFP, and if it is, was the speed of the VC or NVA changed to reflect this? -=Die Alive=-<span id='postcolor'> The VC and NVA were not any faster then U.S. troops. Often U.S. infantrymen in Vietnam also travelled fairly light depending on tactical circumstances and standard operating procedures (unit SOP). However the VC often operated local support and did not usually engage in prolonged firefights, but rather guerilla style hit and run attacks. U.S. infantrymen are trained not to run after an opponent as often that can lead to them getting ambushed. The only time you run at high speed is if you need to outflank an opponent quickly to exploit a weakness and when you are fairly certain that the enemy does not have significant flank security. It goes without saying, that also when retreating you haul ass, but leap frogging so that you cover each other as you disengage the enemy and retreat. As for the ability to mow tons of them down from a helicopter, like Evi said, that's because you were using a gunship and also because the vegitation in OFP is generally not anywhere near as thick as it is in the real life Vietnam where normally you can not see anyone moving in the jungle unless they are moving across an open space (like a rice patty) or where the vegitation is not as heavy. Also in OFP, try hitting the VC or NVA soldiers with an M60 mounted on one of the UH-1 slicks or from the OH-6's and it's a much different story. I think you'll find that a bit more challenging.  I also merged the mission to malden, and got it to lock up there.<span id='postcolor'> True, but someone on the SEB team could compile the information and collect the Flashpoint.rpt files from people who are having these crashes. That way BIS can take a look at the data and give some them some advice on what is most likely causing the problem. That is assuming BIS is interested in helping. There is also Operation Vietnam that BIS has been close to (which the SEB NAM pack is in competition with), but I suspect that it will end up being an expansion pack to Operation Flashpoint 2. Anyways hopefully BIS will help, or on their own, the SEB team will figure out what's going on. Chris G. aka-Miles Teg<GD>

I have a question, if you made a small mistake in a cpp, something that OFP does not "care" about, could that cause freezing? Could a very long cpp cause freezing?  <span id='postcolor'> That's a good question, but I believe I've had these freezes even when I didn't have a description file in my mission folder. The scary thing is that there may be multiple things that cause these freeze-ups. I still for the life of me can not figure out how Adammo (Capt. Moore)'s mission works perfectly without crashing even though it has plenty of units and extra addons in it. I even added my music script (from a past mission that crashed) into the description file and it still worked fine. So far I've not had any problems with the units on any of the BIS made maps (Everon, Malden, Nogova, ect...) so I'm surprised that someone has had the freezes their as well. I've only had the problem with Jungle maps but perhaps only because I was not creating the right combination of events that cause the lock up. Furthermore, I heard of someone else who played Capt. Moore's map on the 101st's server, who had a lockup. The only other addon that did this to me was Frandsen's FAV addon back when I tried to use it for Resistance. The game just freaked out and crashed my computer each time I tried to load it. I'm afraid that the only way to solve what's causing this is to get assistance from BIS. Earlier in this thread I posted part of my Flashpoint.rpt file which contains the specific errors. I'm sure one of the BIS programmers could tell us what is most likely to be causing the error from that information. But I've heard no response from them on this thread. If Suma or anyone else from BIS is reading this, it would be of great benefit if you guys could help us figure out what's causing this bug. This will prevent other addon makers from having similar problems. Plus the SEB NAM pack is a VERY VERY good reason for people to buy OFP and the OFP:Resistance expansion pack. It wasn't real popular because it was so slow frame-rate wise because of the large # of objects I used to try and simulate Mogadishu (and not very well I must admit), but it used the early SEB Delta Force unit addon. As for knee and elbow pads... ack... I've used them also not too long before I got out of the service and hated long marches with them. Fortunately we mainly used them for construction work (while doing masonry) and only when they became in vogue, did we use them during combat training. You get rashes from hell with those things especially in high humidity. The desert BDU's have those big open sleeves so they can allow air in to keep your arms cool, but the elbow pads don't allow for much of that. But in rocky terrain, I guess they're better then having your knee-cap or elbow torn up by landing hard on a rock. At any rate, I don't miss road marches and moving M2's and MK-19's up hills, and setting up tents in blinding rain, doing PMCS, and getting frost bite, and ant bites, and KP, and nearly getting run-over by armored vehicles, ect.. ect.... hehehe. Adammo released them as FBI HRTs and someone else converted them to Ghost Recon units for OFP. They ARE the best looking soldier models out there, but I agree, the textures that I've seen can be improved. And I still don't get the whole mask thing. When I was in the infantry, we NEVER wore masks. Too confining and no easy way to wipe the sweat from your face. I imagine in you were operating in CQB or MOUT it would be alright, but not in normal ops.<span id='postcolor'> Because it looks "cool". And seems like everyone's still fixated on BHD (the movie), so just about every Delta/Ranger in works right now is a copy of '93 Delta/Ranger. Personally, I find the INVASION 1944: FIELDS OF GLORY soldier textures to be the most realistic of the OPFP textures so far... Everyone gets the WW2 gear right, but no one gets the current (i.e. what's being used TODAY) gear right. I can only imagine what people will slap on Marines w/ MARPAT textures... more black vests? Yuk.<span id='postcolor'> I agree...but even the Somalia-era gear is more accurate then the gear I've seen on recent U.S. forces addons like the ones in the latest HK pack which I thought were a huge disappointment. I hope that any future mods will also include regular infantry in Afghanistan type gear. An example is: Also note that many soldiers only have one elbow pad or one knee pad. (Although some units have them wearing the pads on both arms and knees). This is probably to save weight on long marches because generally a soldier goes prone hitting the ground hard with only one knee and elbow. But the pads are quite big and actually those earlier pics of the addons do seem more or less accurate. But I just wish they could refine the model or the textures a bit more so that they don't look quite so rough and instead, more refined like the SEB NAM soldiers. The SEB team did an absolutely incredible job on both their soldier models and on the uniforms and equipment that those troops are carrying. I hope that modern U.S. forces will have similar detail levels. Also someone please note in the pic below how small the M4 rifle is that he's carrying. All the M4 models I've seen have all be too damn big. Only KKB has produced an accurately sized M4 but unfortunately he never released a version with a scope. I'll have to get after him to see if he can do that. For those of you who say it's impossible to do, there is a solution..simply extend the telescoping butt-stock. That's what KKB did on his in order for the left hand to hold the rifle properly. Chris G. aka-Miles Teg<GD>

So far the only one I've seen is the excellent "Skye" map. Nogova makes a fine Chechnya substitue as most of the towns in Chechnya are small and most of the battles, aside from the seige of a few large cities like Grozny, have taken place in small towns. What is mainly needed are some good modern Russian troops, especially modern Spetsnaz with those large assault helmets (they look a bit like delta force helmets), body armor, and beenie caps along with thigh holsters for their pistols. Then of coarse you just need some Chechnyan soldiers with mixed uniforms and the occasional beanie cap (those black whool watch caps). That's pretty much all you need as the rest of the hardware is either already in the game, has been made as unofficial addons, or is going to be released soon (like the Mi-26). There are a few units that we won't be releasing until the mod is ready though... <span id='postcolor'> My own opinion is that your team should release British addons that can be used with other more modern British infantry. Â For example, the Lynx helicopter would be a good one. Â However, there's one problem. There are no decent modern British infantry addons out right now, so if you release any British equipment nobody can make any realistic missions with them without British infantry. (I wish Bibmi would hurry up and release his updated British soldiers). However, here's another idea. Â The Sea King would be perfect for Vietnam missions if you could release it with U.S. Navy or U.S. Marines markings on it. Â My uncle used to fly those helis for many years in the Navy. Â I think the U.S. Marines still might be operating the ones used to transport the U.S. President. Â At any rate, adding a few U.S. Navy or Marines markings shouldn't be too difficult to do. If you want something that has nice movie cutscenes and good scripts, try my "Harbinger" mission at the URL in my signature below. It features an impressive HALO insertion and is a decent mission. My best mission is probably the "Chechnya in the Winter" mission but that only works for version 1.46 unfortunately. I plan on eventually updating that one to work in the new Winter Nogochev addon by Kegetys. That one has really extensive movie cutscenes, advanced scripting, and special effects. My Blackhawk Down mission also likewise is similar in scope, but again it works only for 1.46. I'm waiting for someone to make a decent Somalia map before I upgrade that one. Also I have a new one called "Operation Condor" that uses some of the latest addons and has really good cut-scenes.... however the mission itself is just average... but still very fun with lots of good close quarters combat in the town of Lipany (I think that it's name) along with some nasty surprises to keep things interesting. Screen shots of the airborne insertion part of the mission (via Antonov 124 aircraft) can be found at: http://www.geocities.com/miles_teggd/SPETSNAZ.html It features custom sounds, custom voices, (which in some parts uses Wave2Lip sync), and a nice movie intro with powerful music. The beginning of the mission is also really heart pounding with music that really adds to the mood of doing a low-level insertion...plus the size of the Antonov and seeing it skimming the ground flanked by two Su-25 frogfoot aircraft is rather impressive. Also it uses the new BTR-70 addon (either version 1 or version 2). There are a few minor bugs (it sometimes gives a missing addon) but just ignore that and continue on as it should work fine regardless. I plan on fixing that shortly. Chris G. aka-Miles Teg<GD>

Also you have to remember that because of the way the dammage engine is run in OFP, it does not simulate penetration levels. Instead it is based upon cummulative levels of dammage so they really can't make the armor on the UH-1 alot lower unless you would like your Huey's to last only a few minutes before they are destroyed by the onslaught of VC or NVA machine gun fire. As it is, usually one or two Huey's go down in most battles I've created. To Evi... please don't make the UH-1C difficult to fly. Slower yes, but don't make it hard to fly as that just makes people not want to fly it all. I understand that because it was underpowered, it was difficult to fly, but remember this is also a game, and sometimes a little too much realism can make the playing experience unpleasurable if the player is worrying too much about keeping the helicopter in the air instead of trying to get his weapons on target. The RPG-7 still remains a very potent weapon against Russian made tanks. In Chechnya for example many modern T-72 tanks (and possibly newer T80 and T90 tanks) were destroyed with the RPG-7, although possibly with more modern tandem warhead versions of the HEAT rocket that it fires. With that said, the older models they had back during the Vietnam War had serious problems in penetrating M113's and heavier tanks like the M48. But with hits in the right places (like the rear of the tank) they still could be killed with RPG-7's. Also the LAW is indeed not a particulary powerful rocket, however it should destroy any APC with one shot, although PT-76's were a little more difficult to destroy due to their spaced armor which the LAW rockets had trouble penetrating. At any rate, I think that perhaps the LAW rocket could be a tiny bit more powerful, but overall I think that the dammage levels are fairly realistic in accordance to the historical period in which they were used.
