  1. I think this thread should end. Because nobody seems to understand what the OP meant with 'compete', and all ensuing responses are totally irrelevant and sometimes even hateful for no reason. It's a sad state of affairs that the Arma community takes any (even misunderstood) chance to say immature things about other games and their players just because they are not their cup of tea. How many times have BF players actively hated on the Arma series?

Going to change title of this thread.

  2. Did the italics of "in the context of how popular they are" make it invisible for you? Because the OP has excplicitly said many times now that he doesn't mean it the way you want him to mean.

    Exactly again.

I want to see ARMA support MP PvP out of the box for new players and "unskilled" players like myself that sit around and HOPE someone makes a good one and hosts it. On top of that, you hope many have not given up by that time and then even know how and where to look for it so the server is not underpopulated.

ARMA uniqueness could offer MP PvP in a in a true simulation game. Something not offered anywhere else. Me not having the technological know how prevents me on how that would actually be done but having some made out of the box and letting players then make their own maps on the same game premises would only grow this game for the better in my opinion. And it would still let original AMRA players still make their own games too.

  3. Lets say BIS will include 1-2 pvp missions just for the CoD/BF crowd - how long will it take before we will hear from this crowd that they got bored and that the game sucks? How many of them incl. OP do/will make their own missions or can be bothered to do something instead of moaning, crying and trying to show that its an "win-win for everyone" if BIS will do all the pvp missions/maps?? Would it be bad if BIS mission designers create something new and challenging using more than ~200x200m 'shoebox'/'kill' arenas?

Who knows but I think trying is better than not. Who knows, it could benefit this game in more ways any of us could even imagine?

I´m all for a well designed, tight PVP shipped with the game by default. People will want to jump into MP. They shouldn´t wait a month or two for the community to fill the gaps. Plus, a -large- part of the initial buyers will not know about the community sites, and if the default game doesn´t have the content to make them stick around, chances are they´ll never discover them.

There are many people who also aren´t as literate of the internet as many of us, so even if sticking with the game, they may not look in the right places to find the sites. My suggestion would be to add a community news platform to the game. Which BI already tried, by the way: the community didn´t pick up on it and the thing apparently died -> http://forums.bistudio.com/showthread.php?91918-New-community-venture-announced-discussion

Then I already put the argument forward that for the noobs who are simply not aware of -any- website the community hosts, many of whom can´t even be expected to visit the forums or the main website, need to be informed that there is much, MUCH more out there than what they bought in the store.

Arma will fall over and wither in long or short order if the community doesn´t receive a boost of constructive, creative and productive modders/mission designers and general community members. Right now, many people here (like me) are leftovers from the original OFP. Among us are also a lot of modders. A lot of the documentation, etc, (for example the Editing Bible) are legacy works from OFP times.

And to draw new people, Arma 3 needs to have what people want to play: among those things are fun, dive in and enjoy multiplayer modes. And a multiplayer interface that doesn´t need a 600 page manual to figure out (I am exagerrating, but I am sure improvements can be made.)

My take on this, so far.

    Well said.

I don't want a copy of BF3 or COD. I want BIS to develop their version of PvP multiplayer with an ARMA only twist!

  4. How can you even dare to compare Arma that is aimed at realismk and teamwork with those generic FPS?

    Easily, I just did.

For some reason many continue to think I am for removing the realism. I am not.

    AGAIN....

I am for keeping the game AS IS!! I suggest that if you want to get rid of the empty server issue and appeal to millions of more gamers and thus more revenue, ADD ON online MP PvP elements like those offered in COD and BF3 with an ARMA twist!! It is win win for everyone!

  5. Having a pvp game mode that competes or even copies the two big brands is only a matter of a mission maker scripting those mechanics into a mission and adding appropriate assets to the sides. The problem I see currently is that a very big portion of the would-be pvp crowd has no interest in the editing aspect of the game, and those who might be able to do it are discouraged by the low number of pvp players active in the community, meaning that their hard work would hardly be put to use. I made lots of traditional style pvp missions for the CWR² mod but the game tracker hasn't shown them to be played all that much.

That is because it is not marketed as such. And if you went this route the scripting would have to be made 'in house' to be successful. The game you are making means a richer and more dynamic PvP than has EVER been made and I see being highly unique and thus successful in my opinion. I don't know how many people have tried this game and then left because it is dependent on the community to make it successful to what they want. Where as if you made similar and some innovative MP PvP games, I don't see how anyone could touch what you offer.

  6. CoD and BF3 are popular because anyone can just run'n'gun. You can't do that in ArmA. It will never be as popular. It's a tactical team game. Some people need to realize this.

If you want CoD or BF3 or CS - well there is CoD and BF3 and CS.

You could run n gun here if bohemia spent some time developing a game mode for it. No one is telling you ARMA has to lose its simulation play. I am just purposing the online portion be expanded to draw in the attention and massive amount of players this game deserves.

    ---------- Post added at 00:27 ---------- Previous post was at 00:26 ----------

You mean Bohemia would earns tons more cash and build upon this game even more!

  7. I wouldn't mind having working pvp in arma but arma plays so different it wouln't appeal to the typical shooter crowd. They'd say it's sluggish, boring etc.

I play battlefield 3 quite a bit and I have to say dice still doesnt have the weapons and vehicles balanced out. Basically the jet can only be countered by another jet and there's only a few guns worth using. In arma it would be even harder to balance stuff out a bit because arma is supposedly realistic or something.

Sure Arma would. You just have to develop some maps (or use parts of what we already have) and then tweak them to play certain other game styles. You will always have the servers to allow for mods to do their thing, I am just saying you need to have a section that appeals to mass gamers to grow this game. Personally I only stop playing ARMA1 and 2 because after a month the pvp servers are non existent because there is no support or attention given to them. This game has the potential to really take off if done right.

  8. Will they FINALLY make on online mulitplayer that will compete with those titles? As of now their game is far above those two. However I don't understand the business decision to not even try and compete in the lucrative online PvP multiplayer? They leave it up to random individuals with low populated servers. PLEASE try. You have the game, just build it!!!

  9. :j: yeah sure...

I prefer PvP myself, but the few populated PvP servers that have it vs the many populated servers that play coop against ai... tells me you're way off. Try again.

PvP is not marketed or pushed. So most see the Coop severs, like I did, try it and leave. I too was gonna quit until I accidentally found the one true PvP server. The proof is in all the FPS's out there.

  10. 2. Game is only fun on weekends because of too few cogamers online.

    This hasn't been discussed deeply.

And I can't follow the threadopener with this as I already stated in the fourth post of this thread.

    And I tell you why:

I had hundreds if not thousands of 1 vs 1 (take it literally!) CTI games that on average gave me thrills for 60 min up to five hours each (!) game.

I just wanna say - you DON'T need many cogamers to have fun with Arma2 online.

Only with few people you can really cooperate not with 20 of them.

Ever had 20 gamers on Teamspeak - no, thank you.

    Don't need that.

No more serious tactical gamin' that way.

So - the second aspect of the original post -:

Don't wait for the weekend do a 1 vs 1 or a 2 vs AI on one of the 700 servers steadily there for you.

Exactly. Having to play AI online in order to have a populated server has turned many people away. Most people do NOT want to play AI online as this game has proven.

  11. How many people do you need to play that game?

There a steadily about a 500 servers open.

There a every hour more than 400 gamers online - so what?

    Take a look here.

Sure I wish BI games a bigger community, but what for do you need more than there are?

Is your questioning serious - is my question.

Most play boring co-op. If you want to play pure PvP and a good AAS game... good luck.

---------- Post added at 09:44 PM ---------- Previous post was at 09:42 PM ----------

What makes you think the game isn't popular? Are you basing this simply on the online count?

Many, many of us are enjoying ArmA2 to its fullest in SP which has a lot of advantages over MP.

You should have asked "Why is this game not more popular with ONLINE players" instead.

    agreed

  12. This game is beautiful to look at and is a very good sim as well. So why isn't more popular? As it is now, I only play weekends because not many people are online during the week.

    Is it because...

    - poor marketing.

    - AI in many multi player games?

    - Lack of dedicated servers for online PvP games?

What do you think they could do to improve the low population online?..

    - Dedicate servers.

    - Develop a massive population server.

    - Increase squad membership by hooding squad stats on the Arma site?

    - Make it for realistic by adding true ballistics?

    What do you guys think?

  13. -----------------Installation--------------

!!!!!REMOVE ALL EXISTING VOPSOUND FILES FROM EARLIER RELEASES!!!!!!

Create a folder called @VopSound_2.1 and inside this one another called Addons in your ArmA2 main directory.

Inside this new Addons folder you place the .pbo and .bisign files you would like from your extracted archive and the appropriate subfolders. The names are selfexplaining.

Environmental Sounds: Ambient and Nature sounds

Explosions,Snaps and Impact Sounds: Any kind of explosion, bulletsnap and impact sounds

Fixed Wings: Sounds for fixed wings aircrafts

Footsteps and Gear Sounds: less annoying footsteps and gear rattling (no more clonketyclonk)

Gun Sounds: Sounds for nearly every weapon ingame

Wheeled Vehicles: Sounds for wheeled vehicles

This .bisign files are there so players using properly signed addons can join to that server which requires them.

Rightclick on the ArmA shortcut in the desktop or where you have it and select properties.

In the target box add -mod=@VopSound_2.1

    It should look like:

    "C:\Program Files\Bohemia Interactive\ArmA 2\arma2.exe" -cpucount=8 -nosplash -mod=@vopsound_2.1

To load more than one mod folder use semi-colons to separate them. (-mod=@mod1;@mod2;@mod3)

    ---------------------------------------------

I am a steam user and build my own PCs but have no idea how to install this given those instructions. Especially when talking about installing the .pbo and .bisign files.

  14. I'm finding it hard to find servers with ppl in them and i think its down to new players not having a clue when they join MP, i think someone should make a sticky for them, just to give them a helping hand to get them started something easy for them to understand with pics showing the map and pointing out how they get the i.e use the flag pole to parajump or spawn at the MHQ

    True.

I wish the server list had a built in chat room at the bottom for people to organize.
