I'm pretty sure a small grid square is something obscure like 128m. Well, not obscure, but awkward. WGL changed it to 100m I think.

Burning Soldiers (carbonized corps/mutilated)
stevevcb replied to bravo 6's topic in ARMA 2 & OA - SUGGESTIONS
I think the level of blood/gore should be left as it is. There's just no need to have people being crushed under tanks, running around screaming in agony because they're on fire or getting their heads blown off. Right now, OFP is violent enough without dismemberment and spurting blood. I remember playing the first proper mission of the campaign and running just behind one of my squadmates. I turn to watch a Cobra fly over, then look back just as he got shot in the head and just dropped. It shocked me because it wasn't like deaths in other games. In Soldier of Fortune, you shoot someone in the head with an AK and he goes down screaming with half of his face missing. In OFP, they just drop wordlessly. It's rather stark. -
Apologies if it's been mentioned before, but one thing I'd really like to see in OFP2 is a better way of showing that you're out of breath. Right now in OFP, you can sprint from one side of an island to the other, panting like a dog, but that's the only side effect. Sprinting at full clack, loaded down with a pack, webbing and rifle would knacker you within a short space of time. So, In OFP2, I'd like to see that level of exertion resulting in you having to stop and catch your breath, get a drink, then continue, or else end up flaking out or throwing up and being worse off. This could tie in with your loadout, so a guy with just beltkit and a carbine can run further and faster than someone with a GPMG and a bergen full of ammunition. Or, if OFP2 is going for the semi-RPG approach, the more running about you do, the more your stamina improves. Again, if it's been posted before, sorry.

Mate, you're officially awesome now

Dramatic pause.

Great! Any chance of the more modern, all-black version?

I did read the entire thread and didn't mean to be rude. I just don't see the fun in filling sandbags. Sure it's part of being a soldier, but so's washing your kit.
-
Iunno. Setting up machine gun positions or using an engineering vehicle to dig or fill ditches, sure. Filling sandbags and knocking lean-to shelters up out of wriggly tin all day isn't my cup of tea though. Sure, it might be realistic, but you have to draw a line somewhere. I mean, what next? Guarding some backwater facility fifty miles from the sharp end? Being caught by the RSM with your beret on wrong and being put on spud-peeling duty? Battalion pay clerk? Running the stores? Might just be me, but "Norman The Storeman: Blanket Stacker Extraordinaire" doesn't sound like a fun game to me.

The most fun I've ever had in OFP MP is when it's played realistically. Unfortunately, you reach a point where you can't refine your tactics and drills any further because the engine's too clumsy. Same for aircraft, once you get to grips with helicopters or planes, you get a little better but you're never going to be an ace. Armoured vehicles are worse, they're so arcadey in OFP that even I, the tankophile, can't bear to use them sometimes. Personally, I'd rather that everything was as sim-like as possible. I'd rather have a steep learning curve and near-limitless opportunities for improving your skills than a shallow learning curve but only a limited number of things you can pull off. First game I ever bought for the PC was F22 Air Dominance Fighter. For months, all I did was cream into the ground, buildings, ships, the sea; you name it, I nose-dived into it a bazillion times. I didn't understand what the HUD meant. I didn't know the difference between AIM-9 and AIM-120 missiles. I didn't know what CCIP was or what FLIR did. Then I bit the bullet and spent a day with the manual, running through the tutorials and actually learning how to work everything. Once I got the hang of the basics, I could then learn from experience. Why was my fuel running out half-way through a flight? Because by putting the throttle back as far as possible, I'd set the engines to afterburner. Why couldn't I launch a radar-guided missile? Because I'd not armed the weapons system. I still play F22 because I'm still not very good at it and I'm determined to get to grips with the bloody thing. OFP2 (the true OFP2, not the imitation Codemasters one) needs depth like this. It needs to encourage people to learn and specialise. In my squad, when we get new recruits, they say "oh, I'm a good sniper, I'm a pretty good pilot and I'm alright in a tank," but when you get them out in the field they're an average shot and a danger to themselves in anything with an engine. If OFP2's level of difficulty is high without being prohibitive and the learning curve steep without putting you off. It needs to make you want to learn. Did that make any sense? Didn't think so

Nothing anyone can say is going to make them do anything any differently, except maybe think "sod it" and not bother releasing it. Because I tell you one thing, if I was working on something and all I was getting is "omg relese it!!1" and people basically calling me an arsehole because I want to do something to the best of my ability, I'd probably turn around and flatly refuse to release it. Just out of spite. Tell me something, if they released it tomorrow and it had all sorts of bugs, would you complain? Course you would. Then again, sometimes I think about postsI've read here and wonder if an addon or mission or mod or whatever's ever been released without someone taking it upon theirselves to tell whoever made it that they're wrong and an asshole and they should have done this, that or the other. So just wait out. At the end of the day, if you feel angry or aggreived that you're not getting something free right this instant, maybe you should take a walk around a hospital or something, see people with horrible illnesses or injuries who might not know if they're going to live to see next week. Given the choice, I'd rather not know if a mod for a computer game is coming out next week.

Quick, call The Macc Lads! We need a new version of 'Buenos Aires!'

Suits me to a tee, being a non-smoker.

Well, when the FPS hit rock bottom, why does OFP speed up a little bit if you look directly down at the ground?
-
I just added an extra bit to my last will and testament. I now want my consciousness downloaded into a 60ft armour-plated war robot.

Looks great! I remember downloading Skye about three years ago and thinking it was the best island ever

"The devil rides to glory; we hasten by his side" Motörhead Yeah, I just quouted what was in my Winamp playlist

Armed Assault - should the name be changed?
stevevcb replied to theavonlady's topic in ARMA - GENERAL
Call it 'Colonel Kill's Explode-O-Rama' and I'll buy everyone at BIS a drink -
The first thing I thought after seeing these were: Holy. Fucking. Shit. A year ago I'd have said these were renders. If it wasn't for some of the shots looking like OFP (the tank aiming at the player ones remind me of the old CWC T72 one), I think I'd be hard pushed to believe what I'm seeing. Videos! Videos!

Armed Assault - development suggestions to BIS
stevevcb replied to theavonlady's topic in ARMA 2 & OA - SUGGESTIONS
More realistic explosions, i.e. dust and smoke from ordnance rather than a Hollywood special every time someone farts in the general direction of the enemy. The ability to set sides. The East, West, Resistance and Civillian setup is too simple. If we could designate which side a unit is on myself, we could make some really interesting missions. -

God, I love zombie films. I've not seen the remake of Dawn yet because I just know I'll hate it, having seen the original a bazillion times. Shaun of the Dead though... now, that's a film

Why don't they make Star Wars an 18 for repeated scenes of stormtrooper abuse?
-
I love it, great work. My only criticism is that I think both should be in matte black instead of one being black and one being a little silvery, but I can live with that.
