    Game Performance

By the way, the 8600 series is not a 'breathtaking' card... Its quite overrated... Nvidia seem to be making a lot of money from it because people believe it is a cheaper version of the 8800 series.. but infact i believe its equal to a 7900 or something like that?

    ArmA 2

Hmm this latest news gives me a lot more faith in BIS... so long as they can balance all these new features with adequate and steady performance by the release date At least if it is their last public project they should pour their heart and soul into it! And it shouldnt be as half assed as ArmA Still, i do hope they fix ArmA 1 first But the new features in ArmA2 sound awesome and looks like it wont be just ArmA with a few 'refined' features.. we'll be getting some brand new ones

    uppcoming patch?

Performance,Performance,Performance. I'd happily live with all the bugs if we could just get the erratic performance issues sorted out..

    Fixing ArmA

@ofpforum, my earlier post which you said would 'slow down progress of ArmA2' ... ArmA2 will be using the same engine as ArmA 1, just upgraded, therefore if they continue to work on ArmA 1, they will also in turn help the progress of ArmA 2, less engine bugs to fix for ArmA 2 when they come to adding new features. Also if they were to abandon ArmA1 then people would lose faith in the BIS product line and wouldnt bother with ArmA2. Plus there are plenty of people who have forked out a LOT of cash for ArmA and even now dont get the performance which should be given for the newest hardware (i've seen people with dual 8800's and quad core CPU's with issues). I dont think they'll be happy to have to buy ANOTHER new set of hardware only a year after they have purchased the game, and as i posted in the ArmA 2 thread, some people (US residents) have only had their hands on the game a few months... and already they have been given a sequel. So to recap: FIX ArmA1 which will in turn help progress of ArmA2 while keeping the community intact. Abandoning ArmA1 will acheive nothing.

    Fixing ArmA

DEFINATELY fix ArmA then make ArmA 2. Plus fixing ArmA 1 will assist in creating ArmA 2. They need to fix the bugs + optimise the original as they will be using the same engine just upgraded for ArmA 2. I personally WANT to wait for ArmA 2, ive spent enough money on hardware for a couple of years...

    ArmA 2

Agreed Sniper Pilot, but afaik BIS cant afford to create a whole new engine, they only use one engine and they constantly upgrade and modify it :\ I personally think its neccessary for a brand new one also though Its just not capable enough for modern technology and graphical effects etc.

Ah, well the community has been tested since ArmA's release, the 1.0 release was very buggy and it seemed that BIS hadn't learned from their mistakes in OFP, a lot of people felt they were beta testers when the Czech version was released in November last year. Also the release was staggered, US residents only got their hands on the US version a few months ago, whereas other people were playing in November... So for some, they've only just got their hands on the game, and now we've heard there is an 'expansion' out for ArmA and now we get an announcement of the sequel. I agree those moaning about the WIP pics are foolish, but you cant argue with people wondering why a 2008 release for a sequel has been announced, and if it will be the same 'advancement' as Res -> ArmA was then many people may be fairly upset if ArmA2 isnt very original and is just a slightly improved version of ArmA. Thats why a lot of people are critical of BIS at the moment, me also But im really hoping that this new project has been well thought out, planned, and it will have much more originality and higher quality of production than ArmA did, especially in the departments of AI and graphical optimisation... EDIT: @ Trunkz im pretty sure it will be.. i doubt they'll produce it on an out of date Direct X version. Vista will probably have a lot more support and usage out by ArmA 2's release, i wouldnt expect ArmA 2 until 2009 personally.

I personally hope this thread is NOT closed despite a lot of negative criticism and speculation. Its a community forum, so let the community discuss future projects and suggest ideas... As for the storyline, i hope its something fresh, personally i'd like a different 'good guy' side than the US for once... British please? But it wont change now, hopefully the OPFOR will be something new, i dont mind if we have the good old russians returning so long as we get a new 'Resistance' side with a bit more effort put into it than the RACS in ArmA. I'd also like something like a Red Hammer expansion to the campaign, so we can play as the 'good guys' and the 'bad guys' ... We need a good mix of old OFP and brand new ideas to keep it fresh. We definately need a performance and AI overhaul and make the interface less 'clunky' (the only way i can really describe the animations + character movement etc).. My two pence EDIT: I agree with Mandoble's point also, personally i wouldnt mind paying 40-50 quid for the game if it means i dont have to fork out because of poor optimisation

Hmm.. tried to read all of this thread.. got to page 5, got bored, same stuff. basically my view: -2008? My arse, it will be out 2009 at the earliest, if it IS out in 2008 expect it to be an ArmA 'addon' probably reverting to old bugs which are being/have been eradicated in ArmA/OFP now. -The game better be MUCH more different, but im not hopefull. Just because its a 'New game' doesnt mean they've rewritten the engine. Im 99% sure it will just be the same engine upgraded, as OFP->Res->ArmA has been. -If the performance issues are not fixed it will be worse than ArmA. I still personally believe that it is not optimised in ArmA and to 'keep up the pace' with modern games they through in a lot of effects such as HDR/PP/3D grass which simply eat up performance because they are just thrown into the game. -For those arguing about the graphics looking the same as ArmA... STOP. One, it looks to me its already had a fair bit of tweaking, lighting and shadows especially, some dust/particle effects too. Plus, the graphics will probably be added much later on in the game's creation cycle... If the graphics were made 'uber' now, by the time its released it will look old. -Im not going to say im a 'beta tester' at the moment... OFP/res -> ArmA wasnt a huge jump, but i'd say yes it is *pretty much* a new game. But seriously, i'd really like to see something different now, i dont want something like a lean animation, i want some proper new features, maybe some RPG elements, take a soldier through a campaign, starting from training through the battles of the new campaign, improving skills or something like shooting from vehicles etc etc. just a random suggestion off the top of my head, i just feel that ArmA 2 needs something quite dramatic instead of ArmA with some extra shine + a few new animations. -We need more fluidity, no more chunky animations with random hand wavings when we change weapons prone, give the player more control, dont make slight gradients stop you sprinting, while you're able to scale sheer cliffs effortlessly in a squatted walking position. And for those who think im anti-BIS and anti-ArmA2, nope. I'm all for it so long as they learn from their mistakes + fix the issues discovered in their previous games. And i want something fresher, instead of ArmA with a spit and polish and a few new models ...I'll be back to this thread no doubt

    Expansion: Arma: Queen's Gambit

Dunno, quite alot people bought RH and that offered less then this expansion. But hey, good thing is that you arent required to buy it. (In that case BI would probably lose alot of 'fans', because then they would be purely milking us, at least now its our own choice to be 'milked' ) But surely if QG comes with like '1 new gun and 1 new vehicle' as stated on the previous page, then if people want to play online with people who bought QG then they'd need those addons? So either QG will have to come with a patch if its optional or a patch will have to follow shortly after... Therefore all you're really paying for is the campaigns, and i wanna hear what people think first. But i havent got high hopes.. theres two campaigns in it, i was hoping for quality not quantity. But hey, they could still surprise me
